Start your pilgrim trail with the ‘Nataraja Temple’ – member of the five major Lord Shiva temples, each representing one of the five natural elements (Sky, Earth, Water, Fire and Wind – of these, Nataraja Temple represents ‘Sky’). Unlike most of the Lord Shiva temples where the lord is represented in the form of a ‘Lingam’, here the lord is depicted in a beautiful ‘dancing posture’ (nata-raja). Lord Shiva is regarded as the ultimate God of the classical dance ‘Bharathanatyam’ and, thus Chidambaram is called as the Cosmic Dancer’s Place! Another striking feature of this temple is the ‘Nrithya Sabha’ (hall of dance).
