El Cid Vacations Club Explores Day of the Dead in Cozumel

Day of the Dead is one of the most sacred and unique holidays in the world, and El Cid Vacations Club knows the best way to experience it, firsthand. Parades, candies, and celebrations of life after death make three days of the year must see events. October 31st, November 1st, and November 2nd brings the entire country of Mexico to a standstill, and turns it into an amazing scene. El Cid Vacations Club feels that Cozumel is one of the best places to see this celebrated, and this article will show what makes their Day of the Dead celebration unique. Day of the Dead, or Dia de Muertos has existed since pre-Columbian discovery, but has become a well-known event since the twentieth century. Families tend to prepare months in advance for the Day of the Dead, and will create altars for family members that have passed away. These altars, and the items placed on them, are meant to attract the spirits, and have them hear the prayers of the living. A bit macabre, but Mexican culture teaches that there should be no sorrow when a loved one dies; the afterlife is a wonderful location, and we should celebrate their lives on Earth. Other ways that people in Cozumel and Mexico as a whole prepare is by creating special meals and rooms for the spirits to enjoy as they come to Earth for the three days. Some families will spend the entire time at the tombstone of a deceased loved one, instead of engaging in the parades and celebrations.

• November 1st is dedicated to children that have passed, and families will lay skull candies and toys on the tombstones of these children. This is also the day that parades begin, with entire towns, such as Cozumel, face painting as skulls, or some will wear full body skeleton costumes. The skies become red with smoke as the town celebrates with tequila, special foods created for the occasion, and live entertainment. If you decide to visit Cozumel during this time, it might not be wise to bring small children, as they may find it scary, and the big crowds could be difficult to navigate. • November 2nd is the actual Day of the Dead holiday, dedicated to adults that have passed. The usual things laid at altars is the deceased’s favorite foods and beverages, often a bottle of tequila is present as well. More parades are had, as the festivities begin to come to a close, and preparations begin for next year’s celebration.
