Nufarm’s Terrad’or offers effective knockdown
In the wheatbelt of Western Australia broadacre farmers have been fighting an ongoing battle with clover.
It had become a real challenge in the pre-sowing knockdown period. The clover was fully established, and farmers were struggling to get complete control with other Group G spikes. “The results were always a bit disappointing,” explained Benita Moir, agronomist at Elders Pingelly/Williams. “We really needed something that wasn’t an SU to do the job reliably the first time, as farmers were reluctant to put SU herbicides through the boom when they were doing canola and lupin spraying at the same time.” Ms Moir had heard of Terrad’or by Nufarm and was keen to try it. “We mixed Terrad’or with Roundup and the results were outstanding.” She said. “It completely took out the clover and it did a fantastic job on some of the other weeds we’d been struggling to pull down as well, like doublegees, capeweed and hard-to-kill ryegrass.” The burndown time was very quick and it was very thorough – we were really impressed with the results even after the first few days. Growers are typically prepared to pay for premium products – provided they do the job. Ms Moir said Terrad’or came in at the same price or even cheaper than a lot of the competition and gave the results you’d expect from a top-shelf Group G spike. Based on our experience, it’s some of the best value for money on the market. “We use dozens of different chemicals every year and Terrad’or is certainly an exciting new product. For control of broadleaf weeds and particularly clover, it’s going to be hard to beat.”

NEW ADDITIONS TO PRE-EM HERBICIDE CHOICES IMPROVE OVERALL CONTROL
The almost universal use of very effective pre-emergent herbicides has given cereal cropping a huge boost over the last decade. Until last year however, the focus was exclusively on grass weeds and primarily on farming’s number one weed enemy: annual ryegrass (ARG). The 2021 season gave Elders clients their first chance to try Voraxor®, a new broadleaf weed herbicide that has really expanded the weed coverage for pre-emergent residual control and even provides some added help with ARG. Voraxor can fill some important gaps in pre-plant and pre-emergent weed control programs. Voraxor’s main role is delivering robust pre-emergent residual control of key broadleaf weeds in cereals for up to 12 weeks, following incorporation by sowing with knifepoints and press wheels. When applied in the pre-em window, Voraxor will also control young broadleaf weeds that have already emerged. If your pre-em tank-mix includes glyphosate or paraquat, Voraxor will complement them to knock down glyphosate-resistant ARG. If you’re using Voraxor on light-textured soils, its registration for residual suppression of ARG can also enhance the ryegrass control you’ll get from any of the specialist grass weed pre-ems. “Most growers and agronomists love a tank-mix,” said BASF broadacre crop protection portfolio manager Roger States. “They instantly saw Voraxor’s potential to complement the products they were already using. A lot of people mixed it with the A-grade grass weed products like Luximax® and Sakura* to add a few more per cent to already excellent ryegrass control – with the benefit of the first effective pre-emergent offering meaningful residual and excellent crop safety in over 25 years.” On top of all that, Voraxor will help ease reliance and resistance pressure on post-emergent broadleaf herbicides. “Voraxor has the only herbicidal mode of action that is still fully effective throughout all our cropping zones,” Roger explained. “While resistance to some of the other modes of action remains limited to particular weeds in specific areas, growers have, in recent years, seen how quickly it can spread and increase. The only way of slowing that process is by taking a truly integrated approach to weed management. And one of the classic mistakes people make is to keep new chemistry in reserve until the situation is critical. “Voraxor can solve several specific weed control problems for growers as well as contributing to your overall resistance management strategies.”
