ART HIS MODERNISM

STORY

POSTMODERNISM

1

Modernism is the term given to a cultural movement, that started around 1860 and lasted until about 1970. During this time period lots of change occurred at this time. Modernism is all about what is happening in the present rather than what is happened in the past. This new form of art proposed themes appropriate to present occurrences. Design and art at the time was surrounded by a world full of different influences, from industrialisation, war, new technologies and ideas. This lead artist and designers at this time to experiment, they started to emphasise not just on the subject but emphasise on the materials they used for there work. Due to a large social and political agendas taking place at the time, fueled a large proportion of the modernist movement. It challenged the beliefs and systems in place at the time. Modernism is full of different movements: Impressionism, Post-impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, De Stijl, Constructivism, Bauhaus and Surrealism. Impressionism was a 19th century art movement that originated with artists based in paris. the term impressionist was fist used at a exhibition in response to the new style of paintings on show. A painting during this time would usually use the subject of landscapes. The main concept of impressionism was to represent the subject with quick rapid and short brush strokes, using bright

severely economic, geometric design and by it’s respect for materials. The Bauhaus schools was created as Walter Gropius was appointed head of two schools. The schools moved to Berlin Germany in 1932 and a year later was closed in 1933. The school concentrated on teaching basic design, colour theory and composition. Some key artists at this time Walter Gropius, Lyonel Feininger and Johannes Itten. Surrealism began in the 1920 and lasted for around ten years. This movement was dedicated to expressing the immigration a bit like in a dream. Surrealism inherited a lot if its anti- rationalist sensibility from dada, but was seen as a lighter movement. Main artist during this movement were, Marcel Duchamp, Georgia D’keefffe and Max Ernst.

Postmodernism is the movement that followed modernism, and came into effect in the 1960. Postmodernism believed that less was more, and in using a variety of style and cultures, they achieved this through their use of repetition, collage and anarchy. This broke every rule that modernist believed in. Postmodernism is highlighted as a proportion of time, that often show quite extreme experimentation by a lot of designers. The artist at this time experimented with so much they were able to show different media types along with showing, that anything can be used to express their messages. Messages in postmodernism were more ambiguous than the previous major movement. This movement, postmodernism, is a lot more complex, it shows a range of colour rather than just a few. Designers in this modern era are able to do anything and express a message of them selves in a way that has no rules or system and no expectation, as that is what they challenged the most and best.

Post-

From the beginning of the 1960s onwards there were designers who were not particularly classed as graphic designers, or any kind for that matter. These designers were self taught, they made things up as they went along. During the postmodern period all the rules were challenged by all types of people. It has also been taken in to question by theorist, the boundaries between cultures high and low and how the audiences/general public moved between two different forms. For example, changers with in music charts, pop to classical. Deconstruction began during the 1980s and is still alive to this present day. This movement appears to show a lot of abstract forms. It is approach to building design to show architecture in bits and pieces, these buildings will often be seen to have no visual logic. This movement of Deconstructionism rejected a lot of modern criticism. They liked an appreciated a lot of different things from: semiotics, feminism and anthropology focusing on the linguistics system that forms the production of text, rather than the imagery and themes the topics portrays. Deconstructionism is primarily a moment in architecture, it did

though give its name to a major typographic movement in graphic design. A lot of designers began to experiment with there approach to type in a non-linear, non-spatial process. It abandoned the process of a grid. Readers were able to feel the page and not just read it. Punk during the 70s and 80s became assisted in art and design. Punk acts out of the polite, order and routine. It became a popular trend very quickly and assimilated it self in to the hearts of 70s and 80s imagery through postmodernism. The punk movement was mainly established through the music industry and developed in to design from the record cover. Punk was an extreme subversive street culture that originated in good old London. The sex pistons were one or if not the band that started this movement. It was embraced by so much of the creative arts, not just music, but fashion art and more. They often depicted very aggressive visuals with strong archaic behaviour. Graphic designers and often creative types, sort to capture everything in the essences of punk culture. They achieved this through collage, their layouts are chaotic, their slogans shocking and have a very random note to design.

EARTH ARTIFACTS

City In Flux

A city is ever changing and there are many different aspects of one. There are hundreds of people that make up city just are there are hundreds of buildings. There are also small features such as insects/animals, but i choses to focus on architecture. Architecture over time has changed quite dramatically, the use of glass has become even more current in the past 50 years. Previously the work and the detail the architect would design would be included on the bricks, where as more modern buildings contain a lot of simple design

work simple design work. To show the simple design I created a simple illustration using Adobe Illustrator, these illustrations illustrate where the glass as this is left blank. The for two modern buildings I created a small simple fact sheet about this features in accordance with the simplicity of the buildings. I then chose to focus on one city in particular, Dubai. Dubai has a lot of recently built buildings. Using an old style jar I created a small city using illustrated versions of the buildings of Dubai.

These are my first responses. The fist one is a collage of the pictures take around town. The second one are small simple line illustrations of different builds through out different time period. I did chooses to focus more on the modern buildings as they are what is happing now and will be the future.

These posters show some comparisons between a building in paris and a building and a building in Dubai. They are both modern buildings, withe main element to there architectural design being glass.

The building are illustrated simply. There simple outline shows the basic structure of the buildings, this also illustrates where the glass would be. Glass has become a large part of architectural design.

Final For the final out come I created a small city in an ‘old school’ jar, based on Dubai. The premise behind this is to show modern and recently built buildings being influenced by and pushed on by the past. The buildings that are being designed now want to be different for what has been previously built in the past 150 years. Before creating this I played around with some smaller jars, this was to make sure it would be affective.

Earth Artifact

This project 'earth artifacts' was about the golden record and I had to submit a visual design proposal for a new golden. The original golden record was launched in to space in 1977, a lot has changed in 38 years so my entail idea was to create an up to date version, which is quite simple and safe. This was until I researched into the golden record and discover what they contain. It contains a one sided view of the

earth and only shows the nice and good. The earth is not all full of good and there is a quite large considerable amount bad, this is what I wanted to focus on. There are two parts to the earth the geological side and the life side. The geological side to this planet can be beautiful, are there are many natural phenomenons but there is also a deadly aspect. The earth crust is bro-

ken and fault lines exist, these fault line are responsible for the destruction of town and the desolation of living creatures. The life side, the human side is full a conflicts. There are large proportions of history taken up by war, war is an ongoing feature of human life. Has there ever been a time where humans on this earth have not had some sort of conflict to deal with that's has been started by other humans?

I decided to focus on the human side of conflict. For this I produced a series of posters/info graphic type thing. Each of these imagers contains a the outline of the country the name of that country and a statistic of how many conflicts/ wars they have been involved in. I hope this can show a side of the world which is not often discussed. War is still an ongoing part of planet earth and I worth being talked about.
