LIGHTFAIR® International 2015 Keynotes & Impact Speakers Create Unparalleled Educational and Inspirational Experience Released: Wed Jan 28,2015 • Author: Lisa Bokovoy
ATLANTA, January 28, 2015 - The unique combination of innovation, science and design covered by the keynote and impact speakers at LIGHTFAIR International 2015 creates an unparalleled educational and inspirational experience. The speakers are a part of the world’s largest annual lighting-related conference which features 140 top presenters during its five-day program May 3-7 in New York’s Javits Center (Pre-Conference LIGHTFAIR Institute®: May 3-4; Trade Show & Conference: May 5-7). Shuji Nakamura, Ph.D. is a 2014 Nobel Prize Winner in Physics and will present “The History of LED Technology to the Nobel Prize to Today’s GaN” during the Pre-Conference Institute Keynote Luncheon on May 3. This address will cover the history of LED technology from his early work which led to the Nobel Prize to today’s GaN which will lead to the next wave of Solid State Lighting. Dr. Nakamura is a professor at University of California Santa Barbara and co-founder of SORAA Inc. Inventor Chuck Hoberman will speak as the Institute keynote on May 4 about his pioneering work in “Transformable Design” with projects that range from public art to kinetic facades to dynamic sets for live entertainment. His presentation will show how he realizes large-scale transformable structures, and takes his inventive concepts through the stages of engineering, manufacturing and installation. Providing an overview of his methods to create objects that controllably change their size, shape and surface, Hoberman will share his insights into the process of innovation itself. Through his products, patents and structures, Hoberman demonstrates how objects can be foldable, retractable or shape-shifting. Hoberman is the president and founder of Hoberman Associates in New York. This keynote luncheon is sponsored by COOPER LIGHTING BY EATON, Booth 1157. As part of the new series “Legends of Lighting,” iconic lighting designer Howard Brandston will be featured as an impact speaker at LFI and interviewed by Chip Israel, founder of Lighting Design Alliance, for an engaging conversation on Brandston’s work and past projects on May 5. Brandston is the founding partner of the Brandston Partnership, a lighting design consulting firm based in New York. He is a past president of the IES and has received over 100 design awards, including the IES Medal, the Institute Honors from the AIA for his contributions to architecture, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the IALD and the United States Institute of Theater Technology Distinguished Achievement in Lighting Award. Brandston has also been an adjunct professor, guest lecturer or visiting professor for over 50 years. Mark Rea, Ph.D. will outline that great strides have been made to reduce the cost of lighting for general illumination; however, little progress has been made to increase the benefits that lighting provides to society in “Monetizing the Benefits of Lighting” as the Impact Speaker on May 6. Dr. Rea has served as Director since the Lighting Research Center was established in 1988. Trained as a biophysicist and neuroscientist, with a Ph.D. in biophysics, he is the author of more than 250 scientific and technical articles related to vision, lighting engineering and human factors, and was the editor-in-chief of the 8th and 9th editions of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Lighting Handbook. Keynote luncheon presentations are included for all attendees registered for courses during the two Institute days that make up the LFI Pre-Conference program and must be selected during the pre-registration process. The impact speaker presentations are open to all attendees and exhibitors and will be held in the LFI Spotlight Lounge on Level 1 of the LFI exhibit hall area. More information on keynote and impact speaker presentations can be found at http://www.lightfair.com/lightfair/V40/index.cvn?id=10375. Three Generations of That Soft, Warm and Golden Glow...
The Incandescent Light Bulb
For more than one century, Samuel Birnbaum, his son Bertram and now his grandson Larry Birnbaum, have been selling Thomas Edison’s most famous invention ... the incandescent light bulb.
Thomas Edison Seeks Distributors Thomas Edison, an entrepreneur and America’s greatest inventor, established The Edison Electric Light Company in 1878. (It became The General Electric Company in 1892.) Edison realized that his incandescent light bulb could never light up homes and businesses without committed electrical distributors that believed that his invention would illuminate the world.
Birnbaum Electric Becomes Exclusive Edison Distributor In 1909, Samuel Birnbaum opened Birnbaum Electric in lower Manhattan, befriended Thomas Edison and became a distributor for the General Electric Company. Like Edison, Sam was a master electrician, business man and inventor. He and Edison had much in common and they remained friends until Edison’s death in 1931. In 1914, Thomas Edison personally presented Sam Birnbaum with a General Electric Incentive Award for his company’s outstanding performance as a distributor for the GE Company. The award, a hand-crafted and hand-blown replica of Edison’s first incandescent bulb with a high resistance carbon filament, is now a treasured and very valuable family heirloom.
Like Edison, Birnbaum Moves To New Jersey With business booming, Sam’s son Bertram joined the company which moved uptown to a larger building on Broadway and 17th in NYC. Birnbaum Electric became known as Broadway Electric. Bertram’s son Larry joined Broadway Electric and, like Edison (Edison, New Jersey is named after Thomas Edison), he moved to New Jersey to found Epic and the Light Bulb Store in 1980 (a light bulb manufacturer with both wholesale and retail distribution.)
The Newcandescent Inspiration Larry Birnbaum said that he owes the idea for the Newcandescent light bulb to the many customers of his Light Bulb Store located in South Hackensack, New Jersey. When customers became aware of the Federal Law that would effectively ban incandescent bulbs, they started hording incandescents by buying in bulk. Larry says,“We are all somewhat addicted to the incandescent lightbulb and that soft warm glow. It is a very soothing and calming color of light." Larry went on to say that, "the inspiration to continue to manufacture the long-lasting (10,000 hours) rough service Newcandescent bulb that satisfies all federal requirements, is simply the result of what customers continue to want."

2015 NAILD Annual Conference Lighting the Way, Leading the Way
April 26-29, 2015
Marriott Denver Tech Center Denver, Colorado The NAILD Annual Conference is coming soon. The conference will focus on the topic of LEDs and lighting controls. As part of the discussion an in depth focus will be put on how LEDs will affect the lighting industry and how this affects both manufacturers and distributors. Jack Curran, president of LED Transformations, LLC will handle the theme “LEDs and Lighting Controls–What It Can Mean for Your Business”. Jack Curran has 25 years experience in product development and has many patents in the lighting industry. As the lighting industry comes to realize that LED technology is facilitating the expansion of the use of lighting control systems, various market segments once again move into unfamiliar territory. From specifiers, to building owners, many still do not know the wave is coming. Those that do are usually confused as to what it means for them. In this presentation, Jack will examine some key issues facing the lighting distribution market as the world changes yet again. Jim Benya, principal and partner of Benya Burnett Consultancy is one of the world’s top authorities on lighting design and applied illuminating engineering. He will further discuss the ever-changing world of controls. This session will also include a panel discussion to gain greater insight to the many facets of lighting controls. Mark Lien LC, CLEP, CLMC, HBDP, LEED BD&C, Director – Government & Industry Relations, OSRAM SYLVANIA has designed lighting systems for a wide range of applications. Mark will discuss the future of lighting. Our lighting community may cease to exist in its current form as SSL is assimilated into other building products. Industries are aligning and trajectories are converging. What remains alarming is the velocity of change toward a strange new world facing both lighting professionals and users. This presentation will analyze the changes to energy, regulations, trends and technology that are positioned to dissolve our industry as we know it. This disruption will affect distributors in multiple ways. With change comes opportunity but only for those who understand and can prepare. The NAILD conference is a great place for attendees to develop a relationship with potential clients and customers as well as continue their education in the industry.
