At present, the major focus of smart electricity seems to be on smart energy meters. The government of India has a plan to install 250 million nos. of smart energy meters in the distribution system in India. EESL has so far completed the installation of one million units of Smart Meter till Feb’2020. Even though India has a mature meter manufacturing base, to cater to such a huge requirement of smart meters not only the capacity of existing manufacturing units has to be increased but more manufacturing units may also have to be established. Encapsulating the motto of ‘Aatma Nirbhar Bharat’ by our honorable prime minister. ERDA already has infrastructure to support the meter manufacturers by evaluating their meters as well as the new developed technologies. Thus, ERDA in its own way, is ready to extend its support to the India’s initiative of attaining self-reliance. For ERDA, this also creates a unique challenge of testing various smart energy meters within the shortest possible time with maintaining the quality. ERDA’s State-of-the-Art Energy Meters Evaluation laboratory is providing crucial energy meter reliability assessment services to the nation, for more than two decades. So far ERDA has been able to meet these challenges successfully and has become the most preferred laboratory for smart meters in India. All the manufacturers of smart meters are, at present, utilizing ERDA’s facilities for evaluation of their products. ERDA’s meter laboratory is accredited by NABL & BIS for Smart Meters.
