about the cover We wanted a shock factor for the first issue. For this shoot, we asked Ella, a graphic design student to model for us. We spent hours gluing Swarovski crystals onto her lips. Her sunglasses are embossed with lace print. Beforehand, we had various props we wanted to use. However, on a whim, we decided to insert nails into a Granny Smith apple and the rest was history. By the way, thats Nacho, Ella’s french bulldog.

BE ELECTRIC. GET TRASHY. To all the readers of Electric Trash, First off, I want to welcome you to the first issue of Electric Trash. Wow, it has been a long three and a half months to get to where we are today! What started off as a joke between the staff members has become a reality. The long hours of hair, make-up, and wardrobe changes have finally paid off! I remember the very first and last shoot of this issue. The transformation of each staff member is remarkable. On our first shoot, each person was running late. Spread on the floor was an assortment of clothing, accessories, make-up, shoes, and bananas. Although the model had only six outfits to change into, we took an astonishing eight hours to finish the shoot. We had no food whatsoever and relied on water and bananas. On our last shoot, we had two models and sixteen outfits. We had placed each outfit on a rack with the model’s name, number, accessories, and shoes. We finished in four hours and even had time for a thirty-minute lunch break. Needless to say, I am very pleased with the growth and improvement of everyone who has worked on this issue. I would like to thank my wonderful stylist, Gloria, who always stays at least three hours behind to keep everything spicy. I would also like to thank the rest of the staff members and volunteers for this issue – Shirley, the eccentric/anal make-up artist; Vernon, the guy who never shows up but brings dim-sum with him when he does; Nina, the legit street-snap photographer; Emma, the mystery assistant; and Aaron, our king of Photoshop. Without you guys, there is no Electric Trash. Always,
Cristina Viseu Editor-in-Chief

GALAMOROUS!!
article and photos by nina chin & emma zhu
When you first think about Asian fashion, you don’t expect the voluminous blonde hair, tanned skin, platform heels, and leopard-print, frilled dresses that come along with gal style. Gal is a Japanese style that has been around for years and years. Originating in 1991, it has evolved through the ages. It has been reinvented countless times, becoming a subculture within itself. There are many different styles of gals, ranging anywhere from hime-gyaru (princess style), to b-gal (hip hop influenced style). The popularity of this style is slowly, but surely, gaining popularity, even in Western society. Gal Circles have always been a part of Gal lifestyle in Japan. They are also now becoming more common in the states as well. The Diamond Gal Circle is one of the most popular U.S. based Gal circles, having members from Illinois to California. Many of these members are long-time fans of the Gal scene and are graduated members from other “Ameri-Gal” circles. They look to bring the “subculture off the internet”. They hosted an open-invitation event at Kira Kira, a Purikura store in City of Industry, California. Electric Trash caught up with Krystina Engleman, also known as Valentine, one of the first-generation members. . Electric Trash: How did the Diamond Gyaru Circle start, exactly? Valentine: Gyaru is not that popular in America. A group called CALULU came together and started spreading. CALULU wasn’t really going as far as they wanted, so some girls graduated to a mature circle, and started Diamond in Hollywood. Some of us are graduated members from CALULU and then took in other members. Our goal is to spread gyaru, to make it popular, and to create events, the same thing as Lolita and V-Kei. 16
Electric Trash: What exactly is the circle? Can you describe it for us? Valentine: We try to base ourselves off of the original Japanese gyaru circles. Our main goal is to come together because we like gyaru. Gyaru is not as well-known like it is now in Japan. You joined a circle to be accepted. That’s kind of what we do now, but our goal is to spread it and to make it just as big. Lolita is pretty big in the U.S., and so is V-kei. It’s getting so big that they sell it at Hot Topic. We don’t necessarily want it to be commercialized in a way like that, though. We just want a place for people to get together and hold events like this. Electric Trash: How did this sort of gal-style start? How was it founded? Valentine: Gal was started in Japan. Here, it was started by a few people who were interested in it. A group of friends created a circle, and then another circle called CALULU started, which I became a part of. We started to spread, and it was getting big and popular over the internet. People loved the wild white hair, the yamanba make-up, and then it became the big curls and the fabulous dresses. People say, “Oh, you know, Gal is just based off Western fashion,” but it’s way different. It has an extra ‘oomph’ that the Japanese tend to give to things. Electric Trash: Like, a little sexier. Valentine: Exactly. It’s “inspired by” western fashionistas like Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, they say. But gal has an extra ‘oomph’ and an extra touch. I think that’s why it’s getting more and more popular, because people say, “Oh, that’s so pretty, that’s so cute.” It’s EXTRA, it’s MORE. That’s just how the Japanese do it. I think that’s why it’s popular.
Electric Trash: Do you often host events? If so, what have some of them been? Valentine: It’s hard to hold events because gal is still not wellknown enough across the country. The country is so big. I think. for the gals in California, we’re lucky we have a lot of resources. We have a lot of J-Fashion stuff, so we’ve been able to meet. Our focus is on organizing get-togethers, and we’re starting events Most of them have been at conventions, and they haven’t been that successful. This is one of the more successful events. I think people in the gal world would consider a national event to be huge. So we’re working our way up starting with this. We hold a lot of activities and get-togethers, but we’re working our way up there.
17
Electric Trash: What are some of your goals for the Diamond Gal circle? Valentine: Our main goal is to have a big, beautiful event, with people coming across the country. Electric Trash: Yeah! We’re all waiting for that! Valentine: Exactly. Everyone is waiting for the quintessential gal event. We’re starting small, but we’re getting ideas with fashion shows and everything. We want to start that annual big thing that the GALs want. Some people have tried it. It’s not that successful, but we have some good resources in California. Electric Trash: Like you said, you’ve got to start small. Valentine: Right. You’ve got to start small, and then build up. That’s what we’re doing. I think we had a good event tonight; a smaller event, but an event nonetheless. Electric Trash: What do you do to join the circle? Valentine: You have to first fill out a basic interest form, and then we look over the application. We say, “Okay, how is their style, what can they contribute?” Do you contribute organization? Are you interested in starting events or meeting with people? Online organization? It’s still a national circle, so you want online activity, obviously. That’s where a big presence of the Amerigal community is. It’s all on the internet, that’s where a lot of the activity is. People are waiting to see what you have to show, like pictures and stuff. Electric Trash: When did you become a gal? What inspired you? Valentine: I’m from the 2006-2007 generation of Ameri-gals. We started by looking at Kaa-tan and yamanba. The old school stuff! The orange skin, the white hair, we all loved it. At first, I was really repulsed. I was like, “Err, what the hell is that?” You stare at it over time, and you become fascinated by it. Gal has evolved. It’s curled hair and frilly or sexy things too now. You just love it for what it is. More than anything, it’s a fashion movement. You just love it because it’s not well known, but it should be popular.
18
Electric Trash: What are your interests about the gal lifestyle? Valentine: The Japanese do everything extra. I like being fashionable, but it’s the extra stuff, too; curling your hair, extra make-up, it’s fun. It’s a special thing that not everybody knows about, and we’re able to start something newer in the States. I like being one of the quote-unquote, pioneers, I guess. I want to help spread it, maybe even be as popular as Lolita is here, so we can have big and fun events. Electric Trash: What is your favorite part of being gal? Still, the makeup, the hair…? Valentine: Yeah, when you dress gyaru. Sure, that’s part of it. In Japan, it’s a stark contrast. But you don’t need to be Asian for GAL to be a dramatic look on you. Even here, people swear, “Oh, it’s just western fashion.” No way. The gals in the magazines look way different from Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Nicole Richie. They can say what they want, but it’s always something extra. People look at you, they turn their heads. It’s just fun. Electric Trash: What’s your favorite brand? Valentine: I’m on a budget, like most gals. The difference is that, like maybe in Lolita, you have to have brands. In Gal, you don’t really have to have brands. It’s kind of cool to see how little you can spend and how good you can look. My favorite J-gal brands are Ma*rs, Lip Service, Swordfish, and Gilfy. But really, I like that you don’t have to be a brand-whore. I’d be fucked. Electric Trash: Does the Diamond Gal Circle hangout or meet a lot? Valentine: I think we have the advantage that we’re national, even though a lot of us are in California, whether it’s NorCal or SoCal. California is just a good place. We have the advantage of being close, and having a lot of resources, clothes, hair, makeup, and places to hold events. A lot of places here feature Japanese culture. There are a lot of gals and overseas resources here, and a big Japanese community. We use it to our advantage and try to bring people together under the same interests when we can.
19
Electric Trash: What is the process of planning these events? I know it’s really stressful. Valentine: You have to get the venue, convince the proprietors of the benefit and turnout, promote and secure attendance, a lot of things. It depends what kind of night it is. If it’s a club night, you’ll have a DJ, like we have here. If it’s an event-event, you have to get vendors and some sponsors, like you guys. You came out, spoke, and gave out make-up. It’s all about give and take. Everyone has a common goal, J-fashion, and Gyaru isn’t very well-known, so it’s to everyone’s advantage. You have to plan and promote. We have a lot of promotion. You have to market it, and then it’s all about sealing the deal and pulling off an unforgettable night. I think we had good decorations... Electric Trash: Yeah! They were really pretty. Especially the cake, we loved it. Valentine: Thank you! That was a nightmare. Driving, braking, oh my God. We decorated it, too. It’s just pink and white and we put on the ribbon and everything. It’s not just about getting people to come. You’ve got to impress them and make sure they come to the next event. Electric Trash: How long does it usually take you to get ready in the morning? To get everything done? Valentine: When you start, it takes you like three hours. Everyone bitches, “I don’t have time to curl my hair in the morning.” But if you like curling your hair, you will find a way to do it in ten minutes. Today, it took me two hours. But that’s because I dyed, blow-dried, and curled my hair. Usually, it takes forty five minutes. You get it down to a science so that it’s convenient. People who are just starting might bitch that they don’t have time to do all that. You make time. Electric Trash: We understand where you’re coming from; we just did our roots this morning. Valentine: Exactly. I dyed so many extensions today. You do what you have to do. Electric Trash: Who’s your favorite gal? Valentine: It’s hard. There are different gals for different reasons. You like certain gals because they’re edgy or do their own thing. You like certain gals because they emulate a style so perfectly. I like Hoshi Aya. She’s different. I don’t know how to explain it. She’s a sexy kind of thing. I like Tsubasa with the big blonde hair. I like Maya Mori. She has a different look about her that not a lot of other models have. Everyone has different taste for different reasons, whether they break or emulate a style. Electric Trash: Well, thank you very much for your time! Valentine: Oh, no, thank you guys for coming!

Ask Seiji Seiji is an expert in relationships, friendships, and style. He is a magical being who will answer your every question! send your questions to seiji@electrictrash.com Q: I am almost 30 years old and have just recently discovered Visual Kei fashion. Do you think I can still wear it without looking crazy?
A: Unless you’re trying to fit into a skimpy tube top, a skintight mini skirt with ripped fishnets and chains, I would say that fashion is ageless. You can keep rockin’ the v-kei until you’re 80 and still look good as long as you don’t try to look like a 17 year old.
Q: I’m really lazy and low maintenance with my look. But, recently there’s been a cute guy in my math class. How can I impress him, but still be uber comfortable?
A: OH GIRLFRIEND! You don’t know how good you have it being a female! As a female, you can get
away with a lot more—fashion wise. For example, you can show off your sexy ankles with some footless, printed tights and oversized t-shirts. If you have dark circles, sunglasses are always fashionable no matter where you are. If your teacher tells you to take them off, tell them you have an acute eye disease that makes your eyes very sensitive towards bright lights, like in the classroom.
Q: How can I get rid of my gross, dry skin? It’s all flakey. I feel like a fish. A: Exfoliate! Get an exfoliating skin cleanser and use daily, if necessary, and follow up with a moisturizing face cream.
Q: I love Japanese fashion, but its hard finding things that fit. I’m not exceptionally big or anything, I just have big bones.
A: Wear things with shirring! If you are very close to fitting, most Japanese clothing with any stretch or shirring will fit. But, also take into consideration that just because it may fit, it might not fit properly. For example, a shirt that is supposed to hang loosely might fit, but lose the aesthetic. 56
Q: I love buying brand. It’s all I can think about night and day. When I go out to eat, I order the cheapest thing to save money for brand clothes. I don’t even buy face wash anymore…Does this make a bad person, Seiji? Give me some of your prescription!
A: Loving brand is not a crime. However, if you’re still buying brand while living on the streets…that
might be a problem. Obsessive Shopping Disorder is real! It bites you when you’re least expecting it. As for face wash…you can always use homemade ingredients like honey, cucumber, aspiring…Whatever works.
Q: I love the big, curled hair styles of gal, but sadly, I have short hair. I want to be able to do something cute with my short hair that can still fit the gal style, what can I do!
A: Short hair can still definitely mesh well with gal style! Short hair can be very versatile; you can experiment with color, and layers. A cute pouf could work, or even getting different bangs. An example of a gal with short hair is Egg model Kanako Kawabata, so you might look at her for ideas.
Q: I have really bad under eye circles. What can I do to hide them? A: Sleep more! But really—concealer is a girl’s best friend. And diamonds. But concealer in your case! Pick a formula that is suited to your skin and that won’t crease or settle into fine lines, which can make dark circles appear worse. Find a medium to full coverage formula. Apply with your fingers, since the warmth of your skin makes blending easier!
Q: I’m really into Japanese street fashion, but am too intimidated to try it on for size. I’m not Asian, so I feel a bit apprehensive. Do you think my peers will be accepting of it?
A: You should dress in whatever makes you look good, and feel good. Even if your peers find your style to be eccentric or strange—as long as you like it, it’s all that matters. Maybe you should take smaller steps to incorporate the style into your daily life, by bringing in pieces that can be staples for your wardrobe.
Q: I am deathly afraid of putting on circle lenses, but I also want to get that shiny, big-eyed look like the girls in magazines! Help me, Seiji!
A: Putting on contacts can be difficult for some. If the thought of it gives you panic attacks, you can
take other steps in order to achieve a big-eyed look. Using a lighter shadow that is shimmery (white or gold, any pale shade) in the inner corners and lower lash line can help make eyes seem larger. Applying white eyeliner along your waterline can also bring out the whites in your eyes more, resulting in larger eyes, but the look is very harsh at times. You can also try curling your eyelashes and applying fake lashes.
Q: I have huge calves, like cankle status. What can I do to make them look smaller and what should I avoid wearing?
A: Stay away from mid-calf socks and any pants or jeans that taper around the calf/ankle area, be-
cause they will accentuate all the wrong areas for you. Try different types of boots on, in darker colors, for a slimming effect. You can definitely still wear shorts or skirts, but avoid awkward lengths, such as at the knee or below.
