A Healthy Path
Welcome to the New Year!
Let’s start it out on the right foot by focusing on our health and well-being. We know everyone is busy, but we want to remind you that it’s important to take some time for self-care. Plan to invest in your physical and mental health just as you would to ensure your financial health. January is a perfect time to begin! In this section, we share some information about health care, fitness, and medical services offered locally that can help you on a path to better health. (continues)
Depending on one’s stage of life, there can be many amenities that make a community stand out as offering exceptional quality of life, from employment opportunities to a great education system, affordable housing to economic development. But one service that nearly everyone considers to be important is quality health care.
Since 1888, Southeast Georgia Health System has ensured that coastal Georgia residents and visitors have access to the highestquality medical care, close to home. From the original 40-bed hospital, with the support of our communities, the Health System has evolved, progressed and expanded, introducing new services and technologies, increasing the number of patient beds, and expanding services to five counties.
As our community continues to grow, Southeast Georgia Health System is also growing. Construction crews are currently hard at work expanding and updating the Emergency Care Center (ECC) and will soon begin construction on a new Surgical Services Tower and new Inpatient Floor. The ECC expansion will add 15 exam/treatment rooms, for a total of 50, including 2 trauma rooms, allowing for more patients to be served than the current average of 153 patients per day. With need projected to grow by more than 10,000 patients by 2020, this expansion is critical to help minimize wait times and allow more patients to be seen and treated each day.
Comfort and privacy is important, especially when you’re in need of medical care, and the new Surgical Services Tower and Inpatient Floor are being constructed with that in mind. The Surgical Services Tower will include 16
operating rooms, additional post-anesthesia and pre- and post- recovery bays with greater privacy, as well as a new canopied main entry at Parkwood Drive with a twostory lobby. The rooms on the 4th and 5th floors of the St. Simons Tower will be converted to 64 spacious private patient rooms. Construction of those areas will begin in Spring 2019, with the Surgical Services Tower slated to open in Summer 2020 and the New Inpatient Floor scheduled to open in 2021.
The $130 million project includes 74,000 sq. ft. of new construction and more than 140,000 sq. ft. of renovated space, and incorporates infrastructure upgrades to accommodate that growth.
Southeast Georgia Health System President & CEO Michael D. Scherneck says, “Everyone needs health care at some point and we’ve seen patient volumes increase dramatically in recent years. This project demonstrates our ongoing dedication to providing the health care and medical services needed in our community. We are committed to maximizing available resources, and adding advanced technologies and treatments to expand those services as needed.”
The project is made possible by tax-exempt revenue bonds and the generosity of donors; however, it isn’t totally funded yet. This is where the 20-20 Vision Campaign, launched by the Health System’s Foundation in March 2018, comes in. Although more than $5 million of the $8 million goal has been raised so far, as throughout the Health System’s history, the growth and expansion of the hospital requires the support of our communities.
“We sincerely appreciate all our supporters,” says Krista Robitz, director of Development. “And we hope that everyone who values a strong community hospital that meets the health care needs for future generations will contribute to our 20-20 Vision Campaign. Giving is easy, and one-time and ongoing gifts are appreciated. Naming opportunities are also available.”

Aperil of living on an island in the sun in South Coastal Georgia is the development of skin cancer from prolonged exposure to the sun. Regular checkups are highly recommended by our local dermatologists to catch and remove any skin cancer as early as possible. Mohs Micrographic Surgery, a staged procedure, is the optimal way to remove most skin cancers. Luckily, we have an expert in Mohs surgery right here in our community. DiPreta DermotolEdward DiPreta, MD ogy’s lead physician, Dr. Edward DiPreta, is the only local full-time practicing Mohs surgeon in the BrunswickGolden Isles area. A board-certified dermatologist, Dr. DiPreta has more than 10 years of experience performing Mohs surgery. In that time, he has completed more than seven THOUSAND successful Mohs surgeries. Dr. DiPreta graduated from Notre Dame in 1988 and earned his medical degree from Chicago Medical School, and then completed a Dermatology residency at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., known as one of the nation’s top dermatology programs. He is a member of the American Society of Mohs Surgery and the American Society for Dermatology Surgery and is a Fellow with the American Academy of Dermatology.
Typicially, Mohs surgery is performed as an outpatient surgery at Dr. DiPreta’s office. On the day of the procedure, a sample is taken and examined under the microscope by Dr. DiPreta. Additional pieces will be removed as required until skin is clear of cancer. Although the patient is awake during the entire procedure, discomfort is generally minimal. It is recommended that the patient be prepared to be in the office for several hours, however. The benefits of Mohs surgery are a reduction in healing time, decreased scar size, and an increased cure rate that nears 99.5%.
DiPreta Dermatology is a locally owned clinic that has been serving the Golden Isles and surrounding area since 2008. They have a friendly, experienced, and dedicated team, state-ofthe-art facilities and a dedicated MOHS Center in Brunswick at 114 Northpark Drive in addition to regular practice offices at 3008 E. A PLACE TO CALL H ME
What began as a handful of yoga classes at a fitness center in 2001, has taken the area by storm, and has evolved since that time to form its own entity. The Clouds Yoga Center at The Club on St. Simons Island offers the Golden Isles yoga community a place to call h{om}e.
The intention behind the development and growth of The Clouds Yoga Center has always been a vision of love: to bring yoga to the community and to offer the best instruction, master classes, training and workshops to every student that walks through our doors. The owners and dedicated teachers share a vision for the future of The Clouds Yoga Center, one that welcomes all to the practice and matches the commitment of the students who regularly attend the myriad of classes that are offered.
A C{om}prehensive Offering While serving the yoga community is at the heart of The Clouds Yoga Center, their program continues to mature and evolve in order to expand offerings and varied styles or “traditions” of yoga. Traditions of Yoga taught at The Clouds include Kundalini, Yin, Baptiste and Kripalu, and there are classes in heated yoga, restorative yoga, and aerial yoga. The center’s goal is twofold: to attract new students and to continue serving their dedicated local yoga community. The center’s regular class schedule includes 40+ yoga classes per week at all times of the day and evening.
The Clouds Yoga Center also offers specialty monthly workshops and Master Classes, as
well as “series” classes, to instruct students in the various yoga practices. It is their intention that their students and teachers continue to learn, to hone their skills, and to dive deeper into both the practice of yoga and the philosophy of yoga.
The Clouds Yoga Center is the only yoga studio in the Golden Isles that offers aerial yoga, an authentic practice that is supported by a soft hammock, allowing the student to go deeper into yoga poses. While aerial yoga may be intimidating to some, the center’s highly trained instructors have introduced a beginner series of classes that have quickly become popular and will train students to be confident on the silks so that they are able to then join the regular aerial yoga classes on the schedule once they have completed the beginner aerial training.
S{om}e of the Best Instruction The Clouds Yoga Center offers the most diverse classes in the area and has a staff of highly trained and educated instructors. While all of the center’s teachers hold 200 hour yoga teaching certifications, many have advanced training with 500 hours of yoga teacher training as well as thousands of hours of instruction under their belts. Teachers at the center hail from many areas of the country and have received some of the best instruction from world renowned Yoga Masters. Incredible instructors, who teach globally, have been welcomed to train and teach at The Clouds Yoga Center. Max Strom, Dennis and Kathy Lang, and Lauren McRae have all been a part of the center’s programs and will return for future workshops.
Bec{om}e Who You Wish to Be Once you set foot into one of the lovely and well-appointed studios at The Clouds Yoga Center, it is their hope that you will feel as if you’ve come H{OM}E. Clouds teachers can help you to find that important “center” where you can experience a sense of calm and peace in every aspect of life. The Clouds Yoga Center is intended to be a space where you can become all you wish to be but also where you can accept yourself just as you are. Their instructors wish to teach you not only the physical practice of the Asanas (postures), but also how to utilize your breath for utmost health. They want to show you how to marry the philosophies of yoga with the physical portion of the practice to facilitate moving into a more well-rounded place in your life with “ease of wellbeing” in every moment.
New C{om}mitments in January Clouds Yoga instructors make it their goal to display hospitality within the studios in the Yoga Loft and to make all students feel comfortable. It is their pleasure to share yoga with everyone and they hope that you join their classes and workshops to experience the physical and mental enhancements that regular yoga practice offers. The Cloud Yoga Studio instructors look forward to making new commitments to the yoga community in the new year and are pleased to introduce these new “series” classes:
Beginner Yoga (6-week series) taught by Karen Lucas, Kripalu certified teacher. Saturday afternoons 1:00-2:00 p.m., January 12th to February 16th.
Journey through the Chakras (8-week series) taught by guest instructor John Hartland. Sunday afternoons 1:30-2:30 p.m., January 20th to March 10th.
Beginner Aerial Yoga (6-week beginner series) taught by Julie Hoover. Sunday afternoons 2:30-3:30pm, January 13th to February 17th.
In growing The Clouds Yoga Center and the St. Simons Island yoga community, it is the sincere hope of Clouds instructors that a spirit of loving kindness will grow and permeate the hearts of all who enter, creating a like-minded community of individuals spreading the love at the center and everywhere beyond. They look forward to welcoming you H{OM}E to The Clouds Yoga Center.

Dr. Diane Bowen of Golden Isles Center for Plastic Surgery is pleased to introduce a new business focused on disease prevention and wellness to the community. Centered on Wellness, her new partnership with Drs. James Greene and Sage Campione and Nurse Practitioner Lauren Koncul, introduces a “whole person, well person” approach to wellness. These like-minded providers have a passion and mission to provide whole person care to help patients achieve wellness and beauty inside and out.
Our lives are increasingly stressed and hectic resulting in imbalance and ultimately disease. At Centered on Wellness, areas of imbalance are identified based through lab results, which allow for a personalized treatment plan to be developed specifically for each individual based on his or her needs. The current medical model is organ-focused and based on treatment of sickness. While that model has been successful in trauma management, life threatening infections and surgical services, it has generally failed in optimizing the global health of our country. The goal of Centered on Wellness is to be on the forefront of prevention and a leader in this community for wellness.
Wellness is a lifetime journey with no quick fixes. Sometimes the path is well-paved and sometimes it’s an uphill climb. Centered on Wellness and its highly trained staff can help you along this journey. They offer a variety of services including nutritional evaluation and management, Nutrient Infusion Therapy (AKA IV nutrition), dietary counseling, stress reduction therapies, and hormone balancing. They also offer individual consultations and group educational seminars.
One of the elite services at Centered on Wellness is Nutrient Infusion Therapy. With Nutrient Infusion the body receives vitamins and minerals directly into the blood stream to help neutralize nutrient deficiencies. There are various options, depending on what your body needs. Myer’s Cocktail (named for Dr. John Myer) contains several vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that are great for general nutritional supplementation. Key ingredients include B-complex, magnesium, methyl cobalamin (B12), pyridoxine (B6), and Vitamin C. This is the ideal choice for maintenance therapy, athletic training, migraines, fatigue, fibromyalgia, acute muscle spasm, common colds, and seasonal allergies.
With cold and flu season upon us, Centered on Wellness can also give your immune system an extra boost. To help fight off colds, Super Immune Therapy infusion contains extra immune boosting ingredients including TriAmino Blends with the add-ons of zinc and lysine. Lysine is an anti-aging ingredient that helps with collagen synthesis. It also has three powerful B vitamins along with a strong dose of the body’s most powerful antioxidant, glutathione. This is an excellent general nutritional supplement and year-round immune system boost. It’s also an added boost for cancer patients to aid them during their cancer treatments. Centered on Wellness also offers Infusion Therapies to help with post-surgery recovery, stress and anxiety, hormone balancing and Vitamin C intake.
