PUBLISHER’S LETTER
60 is the New 40
I
recently turned 55, and while it wasn’t a “milestone,” it did get me thinking about my longevity. If I’m planning to live to be 100, I need to start figuring out what I need to do over the next 45 years. At the beginning of the 20th century, the average lifespan was 31 years. Today, it’s almost triple that, thanks to many, mostly minor, life tweaks proven by science to have a real effect. From obvious things like quitting smoking, cutting out sugar, exercising daily, and eating healthier, to subtler things like getting enough sleep, drinking green tea, meditating, and keeping your mind active, there are literally hundreds of ways to live longer. Here are some areas in which I need improvement: Cook meals at home. A 2012 study cited in Public Health Nutrition found that people who cook at home up to five times a week were 47% more likely to still be alive 10 years later than those who didn’t. How about if I just bring something home to eat and pretend it was cooked there?! Eat less meat. A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that vegetarians have a 12% lower risk of premature death than meat eaters. But what’s a fella to do when your favorite local barbeque joint is named The South’s Best in Southern Living?! Turn off the TV. Bad news, fellow bingewatchers, according to research from The University of Queensland, every hour of TV you watch after age 25 cuts your lifespan by about 22 minutes. Research also found that people who didn’t watch TV at all lived nearly five years longer than people who watched for an average of six hours per day. Maybe

it’s the commercials … so Netflix wouldn’t count. Yeah, I’m going with that. Move on up! Jimmy Buffett sings about the changes in attitude that come with changes in latitude, but a 2011 University of Colorado School of Medicine study says that it’s altitude that makes the difference. They discovered that the 20 U.S. cities with the highest life expectancy had an average altitude of almost 6,000 feet above sea level. By lowering the risk of death from heart disease, it added between 1.2 and 3.6 years to a person’s life. Go urban. Research shows that city-dwellers live longer and healthier than their more countrified kin, but I’m skeptical about this one because just thinking about city traffic raises my blood pressure! Get hitched. A Duke University Medical Center study found that baby boomers who stayed married are less likely to die early than their single counterparts. I’m sure there must be a footnote in there somewhere that says “as long as you don’t make her mad.” Become a parent. Having kids actually decreases your risk of conditions like cancer and heart disease, which also increases your longevity. With five boys, Drs. John and Missy Weaver might live forever! Being a bachelor, I enjoy being able to eat out every meal, binge-watch my favorite programs, or just hang out at the beach. But If I want to live to be 100, I guess I need to marry a woman with kids, who’s a vegetarian chef and lives in Denver!

hen you drop below the Mason-Dixon line and closer to the coast, things feel a bit different. It’s a little warmer. There’s a certain thickness to the air. Perhaps you catch a whiff of the marsh on
the breeze. The light takes on a different cast as it filters through the Spanish moss. As you soak it all in, your soul feels a little lighter and your cares seem to drift away. There’s a slower pace here and you can find pockets of serenity and beauty all over the island. SOUTHERN maritime forest environment and to embrace views of lake, river, marsh, and rookery, but also to create thoughtful outdoor spaces that can be used practically year-round. Welcoming front porches and screened terraces that feel like an extension of the home are hallmarks of the design of Frederica homes. Where architects have traditionally designed to bring the outdoors in, now they are bringing the indoors out in such a way that the transition between the original lines of the home’s interior and their extension into the porches and outdoor space is seamless. From the iconic sweeping old-fashioned Southern sleeping porch with swings and rockers to summer kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, and brick or slate terraces, all with fantastic panoramic views, there is careful thought put into creating the perfect spot to embrace the coastal living climate. Summer breezes off the lake allow for wonderful evenings outside, and on a sunny winter day, there’s still the perfect ambiance with a football game on an outdoor TV and a fire in the fireplace. And these outside spaces aren’t like a deck added on as an afterthought; they are generally finished to the same level as the home, many with beamed ceilings and beautiful chandeliers. Large screen panels or phantom screens that disappear into the ceiling replace windows and air-conditioning vents. Al fresco dining is done with top of the line appliances. Outdoor fireplaces and televisions create an airy family room. Whether appointed with stone and richly stained beams or crisp white wood and tabby or tile, these areas easily become the heart of entertaining and activity in the home. That entertaining space can be drawn further out on the lawn with a fire pit overlooking the marsh or lakefront, sturdy Adirondack chairs, and a nearby stand of wood, promising a comfortable and casual end to the evening. SOUTHERN With homes that embrace outdoor living and the island lifestyle, it is no surprise that Frederica has experienced tremendous growth in the past several years. When the Club was purchased in 2010, there were 12 homes built. Since then, there have been 120 transactions in the community between home sites and home sales with 101 home sites and 19 homes. ISLAND STYLE decorating a retro diner, restaurant, or bar – or maybe even in a museum collection! Amazingly, this palace of pop culture is the creation of a single man with a nose for nostalgia. For self-proclaimed Parrothead and avid UGA Bulldog fan Joey Taylor, collecting memorabilia has been a lifelong passion. Looking around this incredible entertaining space complete with kitchen, grill, bar, TVs, fire pit, hot tub, and its own Wurlitzer jukebox, you cannot doubt that passion for one second. Every single inch is covered with colorful signs, stickers, posters, displays, and memorabilia boasting famous brands, teams, and pop icons. Buffett, Budweiser and Bulldogs are joined by Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Jack Daniels, Texaco, Gulf, Sinclair, Quaker State, and Sunbeam, just to name some. Around every corner, you’ll recognize logos and characters that transport you back to your childhood and memories of a kinder, less complicated world. (There’s even a pay phone! Remember those?!) While it has taken Joey about three years to bring Little Margaritaville to its current state, he had an even bigger display at his prior home in Nashville, Georgia. Seeing the treasure trove here, that’s hard to imagine! Joey’s family was in the agricultural business, and once he earned his CDL, Joey made frequent travels off the beaten path. In those travels, he often came across old vintage signs and colorful rustic treasures people had in old farmyards, barns, and garages. He says he started collecting the old signs when he was in his 20s, and now, more than a couple decades later, restored Coca-Cola iceboxes and vending machines, old gasoline pumps, cigarette machines, and so many other fascinating pieces of pop culture nostalgia complement those colorful vintage logos and slogans that hang everywhere. And much like a devoted father, Joey can tell you the stories of just about (continues)

ISLAND STYLE every piece – where it came from, how much he paid for it, how much similar items are being sold for if you look it up on eBay. Some items
have personal connections: the Sinclair Gasoline pump he had restored was taken from his mother’s family’s farm; a more recently acquired Quaker State sign with a rare yellow background reminds him of his father’s 30 years driving a truck and only using Quaker State oil. Others were just good deals and great finds. Joey’s trusted friend and neighbor Julie Gaskins smiles and shakes her head as he shares some of the stories and he points out various pieces. “It’s his passion, that’s for sure. And it has been for years. He just loves it. And he has a real knack for it!” After all, Joey says, “I’ve been doing it for more than half my life.” And the hunt and collection is only part of the time he spends pursuing this passion, he has also put hours into restoring pieces, building furniture from some of the treasures he finds, and the endless task of polishing it all up. But to Joey, that is all time well-spent. He says, “It’s like therapy. It makes me feel good. Looking at it and working on it takes me back to yesterday.” There’s nothing he likes more than showing 32

off his finds and sharing it with friends during football season parties and summer cookouts. Although, he admits, the collecting might in fact be an addiction. He just can’t stop. He explains, “I had a Harley-Davidson that I just sold a little while ago. It was a 2009. Guess how many miles it had on it. 4,000. Only 4,000,
because I’d rather spend my time here working on this than be out on the bike.” Besides, it’s tough to carry home his finds on motorcycle! While continuing to add to and enjoy his own collection, Joey has other dreams as well: he’d
love to own a diner where he could share his fabulous collection with the public, or to use the skills he’s honed collecting and creating his personal paradise to help someone else do the same in their own home or business. He could easily transform a bar or restaurant with some retro finds and décor, and he’d be the perfect “Margaritaville man-cave” designer and decorator, if you will. For now, he’s happy to be flipping cheeseburgers in paradise at cookouts with his friends right here at home. When asked if he has a “holy grail,” or single piece of memorabilia that he HAS to have to complete his collection, Joey replied, “A 1957 Chevy car couch. With the rear bumper on there and taillights that work.” There’s one out there in Glynn County that he’s got his eye on, but it’s being happily used by customers right where it is, so he’ll keep checking online sources, auctions, estate sales, and such. The hunt, after all, is part of the fun! And if he DID get that 1957 Chevy car couch, would he stop? “No,” he says with a grin, “It wouldn’t be done. I’ll never be done.” As his eyes drift around the room, you can see him mentally cataloging his pieces and thinking about what else might be out there, and looking for an empty space that could be filled – or maybe that lost shaker of salt. First and foremost, you want to remember that your landscape should be tailored to your specific local environment. A common mistake that people make in landscaping is trying to

emulate another climate or geography. Internet and magazine photos are great for inspiration, but the best examples of what will work for your landscape are found in your city or, better yet, in your neighborhood. Becoming familiar with the localized components of soil, light, climate, hydrology, topography, biological and physiological issues will prepare you for the realities of your specific location. With a greater understanding of potential (continues)

opportunities and constraints, you can conceptualize viable solutions. Also, acknowledge the dynamic nature of seemingly predictable patterns such as tides, rainfall, deer populations, local ordinances (i.e. tree protection), and climate. Most of the issues you may encounter, no matter how uncommon, have been addressed by others. Local professionals are the ultimate solution to navigate the pitfalls associated with landscapes. Try not to stare at it for too long. I have developed landscape solutions on a daily basis for such a long period of time that I typically trust my initial instincts to begin the design/build process. But it still happens to me; I have a personal landscape project I’m working on and I study it so carefully that analysis paralysis sets in and the course to action becomes blurry. Many of the people I meet seeking to improve their landscape suffer from this mistake. Fear not, the easy cure for this is another brain and another set of eyes to break through the creative block. If you are already thinking outside the box (literally outside the four walls of your home) then it will certainly require inspired and creative thinking to achieve superior results in this area. Modeling your success after the successes of others is another key concept in outstanding landscapes. Again, this means understanding and identifying localized examples of what you wish to achieve and then applying creativity to adapt them to your unique conditions. As simple as this solution sounds it is probably the most challenging mistake to overcome because it can lead to just giving up. Don’t go it alone! Sure, some components of landscapes are so small that they don’t require a team of expert professionals to perfect. However, the systems associated with successful landscapes can be quite complex. This includes the biological components of botany, horticulture, and agriculture (in culinary landscapes) and the mechanical components of irrigation, drainage, lighting, and special features such as fire pits, swimming pools, and outdoor living areas. Home automation is an exciting new 42
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
trend that is integrating control of landscape features (lighting, irrigation, pools, spas, fire pits, and music) with more common indoor systems on your phone or tablet. There are many service providers that specialize in each of these disciplines and experts that specialize in the integration of these disciplines into exceptional landscapes. The bottom line to
avoiding this common mistake is to ask for help especially in the areas you are not knowledgeable or proficient. Plan ahead! This is perhaps the antithesis of the overthinking mentioned earlier. Somewhere between unplanned action and over analysis is a sweet spot where an intuitive design process paves the way for action and pays huge dividends. While most of us will not tackle a complex landscape design or renovation project singlehandedly, it stands to reason that the same strategies used to plan your next vacation or design your retirement can be applied to a landscape. First, ask “What do I want to accomplish?” A clear and well-defined goal is the first step to reverse engineering a viable solution.
Planning can be as simple as a written outline or collection of inspiration photos to something as technical as professional construction drawing documents. Budgeting plays a large role in planning in that it lends focus to a scope and prioritization of landscape project elements. Because budgets are sometimes flexible or unknown at the inception of a project, I find that a holistic view of a landscape and its potential with regard to cost and design possibilities is the first step to unlocking outstanding results. Watch out for “shiny object syndrome!” Chasing rabbits is another term for the distractions that prevent us from achieving success. In terms of a landscape this can manifest in several ways; a lack of focus, misguided purchases of inappropriate materials, or attempting to multi task other projects. Failing to plan often leads to this mistake where your goal and path to that goal are derailed by impulse. Additionally, attempting to emulate another climate or geography can lead to the purchase of materials that are not suited to your location. Plants are the most common impulse buy for unfocused individuals. Before you buy that beautiful exotic plant that is currently in bloom, take a second to see where it was grown. Probably in a greenhouse, but if you are in Georgia and the object of your eye was grown in Oregon, then there will likely be issues associated with climate, pests, and performance. Finally, if outstanding results are what you expect, your efforts in conceptualizing, implementing, and maintaining your landscape must be proportionate. Devote a reasonable amount of resources to your landscape endeavors to maximize satisfaction. If you avoid these five common mistakes, you will find that a focused and well-planned approach to your landscape (and other endeavors) will yield the outstanding results you desire. oastal Georgia is a great place to live and enjoy the many outdoor areas in and around your home. Mild winters and coastal breezes make patio, porch, or pool areas great places to swim, sunbathe, cook out, dine, entertain, or just relax. Outdoor furniture comes in a variety of styles and types. There are oval, round and square tables with chairs for dining. There are “chat groups” with four chairs and a low table for cocktails and snacks. Bar stools and bar stool sets come in bar and balcony heights. There are lounge chairs with

There are umbrellas in all sizes and colors. Unfortunately for some kinds of outdoor and patio furniture, Georgia’s heat and humidity can be enemy number one. crack. But it’s not a hopeless cause; there are some great furniture products that will work very well in Georgia’s climate. When considering aluminum furniture, there are several excellent options. Tropitone has a line of extruded and cast aluminum furniture that has a 15-year warranty against structural defects and 5 years on the powder coated paint finish. It comes with several cushion features including water-resistant slings and cushions and padded slings made of Sunbrella fabric that resists fading or staining. Windward Design Group based in Sarasota, Florida offers a line of aluminum furniture with a 15-year warranty on structure and finish. Windward has an extensive line of marine grade polymer products. Marine Grade Polymer (MGP) is impervious to the salt water environment with color all the way through the product. Windward prides itself on its aluminum and MGP products being 100% American made. The line of solid cast aluminum furniture from Windham Casting, made in Plains Georgia, is really a modern-day version of wrought iron, with its intricate and delicate patterns and heavy weight. It carries a 10-year structural warranty and a 5-year warranty on the finish. There are deep seating styles and a variety of dining options. Castelle, manufactured by Pride Family Group offers an extensive collection of cast and extruded aluminum furniture. Styles include contemporary and traditional with many frame colors and fabric choices. The warranty is 10 years structurally and 5 years on the powder coated finish. There’s a relatively new product on the market called Breezesta which is made from recycled plastic and looks and feels just like wood. The furniture is heavy so it works well outdoors around pools or on decks and it’s not likely to blow away in a storm. It comes in a variety of styles and 22 colors which can be combined for dramatic effects. Breezesta is a unique company in that it owns the recycling facility and controls the entire manufacturing process. Their furniture has a lifetime warranty.
Making a comeback, PVC furniture has become increasingly popular for outdoor areas. The pipe comes in either white or tan. Casualine, based in Winter Garden, Florida, has a line of PVC furniture that comes with Sunbrella and Textilene cushions and sling styles. For many years, the most popular product for porch and sunroom furniture was wicker. Lloyd Flanders has been making woven wicker for more than a hundred years. Now in addition to their traditional woven line, they are making a new product – resin wicker – that works well outside because it resists humidity and heat damage. It is easier to keep clean as it can be sprayed with a hose and scrubbed with soapy water. Most of The Patio Store’s manufacturers make resin furniture including Tropitone, Windward Design, North Cape International and Erwin and Sons. The wicker comes in several colors, not just white like the old-fashioned product. Cushions are Sunbrella fabric for easy care and long life. Of course, we can’t rule out natural wood. The Royal Teak line is a time-honored option for outdoor furniture. For the traditionalist, teak offers the natural wood choice for tables, chairs, lounges and deep seating groups. Gas fire tables are steadily gaining popularity for enjoying the outdoors in the colder months. These tables can be used on porches and lanais without the smoke and soot. They have adjustable flame heights and are available with many variations in size, color and top surfaces. If you use sun umbrellas, you may want to consider the Oasis Rolling Base, a new product recently introduced by a German manufacturer. This base is designed to give homeowners flexibility with umbrella placement while
still providing a stable base. The base is easy to move to allow for the position of the sun. It comes in several sizes to fit different umbrellas. All of these furniture products are made to the highest standards and are designed to stand up to tough weather conditions with relatively low maintenance. Sunbrella fabrics are fade and mildew resistant. Mildew thrives on dirt and humidity. Regular vacuuming and clean-
ing with warm soapy water will keep cushions looking fresh and retard mildew. 303 Fabric Protectant, a product endorsed by Sunbrella, will provide extra protection for mildew prone areas. It’s also important to take special care with furniture around pools. Saltwater pools that use salt to generate chlorine can be corrosive to outdoor furniture frames. Furniture may get sprayed with pool water by some pools that use robotic cleaners. It’s important for homeowners to regularly rinse furniture around the pool with fresh water. To see all of these outdoor furniture options for yourself, visit The Patio Store in Kingsland, Georgia. There are floor models of each line for you to see and try. But don’t sit too long or you might not want to get back up, because the furniture is super comfortable! You may purchase the floor models or special order your own set from a huge selection of styles and fabric choices. nce upon a time, the fact that an actual visit to a location was either impractical or impossible would mean lost opportunities. That need not be the case in this age of technology. The days of virtual reality are here and a man in our midst is taking full advantage of the possibilities it offers when it comes to real estate. Longtime Golden Isles real estate photographer Harlan Hambright explains that while “virtual tours” have been used by real estate agents, brokers, and sellers for years, they have been nothing more than “fancy slide shows with a few effects like panning and zooming thrown in.” He continues, “They cannot convey the experience of moving through a space and don’t do a very good job of conveying how different spac-
es relate to one another.” Using the Matterport platform, Harlan is now capable of providing clients with a 3D tour that creates “about as close to the experience of actually visiting property as can be done right now.” Harlan says his discovery of the newly released Matterport platform came about when his biggest real estate client asked if he could do virtual tours. They were using someone else out of the area to provide that service and the tours had bad background music. Harlan says he told them he didn’t like most virtual tours, but he’d see what was out there. It was then that he found Matterport’s 3D technology. “It offered what I had imagined doing for several years, but even more effectively.” Not only was
the viewing experience significantly better than the traditional virtual tours, it has the added benefit of being quite adaptable and convenient. Harlan explains, “An agent can download their listings to their mobile phone or iPad and will be ready to show a house anywhere, anytime. Bump into someone at Tramici who says they’re looking for a house, and you pull out your phone and say, ‘Here’s one,’ and walk them through it right there. The tours have also recently been upgraded to VR technology.” Linton “Bubba” West, an Associate Broker at Sea Island Properties, calls the 3D tour “a game changer.” Before he was using (continues)

Harlan’s 3D tours, Bubba would have to drive around with clients to see 15 sites or so. Now, he says it’s more like 3-5, because they are able to narrow down choices by putting the tours up on a big screen and doing these virtual walk throughs with clients right in the office without the need to travel to the property. What really sold the 3D tours for Bubba was
his own personal experience with it. When Bubba was selling his house in Sea Palms, Harlan offered to do a 3D tour for him at a reduced rate to show him how well it works and promote its use in Bubba’s real estate practice with Sea Island. When the property was listed accompanied by Harlan’s 3D tour, Bubba had 2 full-price offers by the next afternoon – neither of whom had stepped foot in the house. He was amazed. Of those two potential buyers, one came out to measure for a specific piece of furniture and the other never visited the property until after closing. Bubba said not only was the process simple, it also meant the house only needed to be cleaned once for the filming of the tour, and not continuously for buyer walk-throughs, which can sometimes be inconvenient and disruptive for sellers. With this type of result, Bubba was sold! He knew then how valuable the 3D tour would be as a sales tool and time-saver for him and other agents and brokers in the real estate and vacation rental market. That’s a pretty impressive endorsement!

The potential of the 3D technology is not limited to real estate sales/rental situations. The possibilities for application are endless! Harlan says, “I got an emergency 3D tour on a Sunday last year. A Sea Island home had been broken into and the out-of-town owners wanted to know what had gone missing. I rushed over, did a scan of the entire house and that evening they were able to walk through their house assessing their losses.” He adds, “It has great potential as an aid in teaching or experiencing architecture, training, scanning environmentally sensitive or dangerous landmarks so that people could experience a place without fear of damaging it or themselves, fundraising – I scanned the press room for Ashantilly and they can promote their restoration work and needs with it. Any application where someone needs to experience a 3D space. I also scanned the old Brunswick Mall for an out-of-town architect. He was able to extract dimensions from my model for renovation plans.” Are you afraid of heights or maybe can’t climb stairs due to a physical disability? No worries, you can still visit the top of the St. Simons Lighthouse now, thanks to a 3D Tour created by Harlan. An added benefit? Everyone can now access the off-limits lens room virtually. The cutaway dollhouse views of the buildings Harlan scans are fascinating. Now you can see and understand spatial relationships more clearly. Visit harlanhambright.com to get the full 3D tour experience. Climb the lighthouse, just for fun – it’s definitely worth the view! (continues)

Equally so that you can find the ideal sofa, mirror, or lamp at 50 to 60% off general retail prices!
staff can confirm styles and makes with you. If you’re flexible, you can recreate that picture for your home.
When shopping consignment stores, here are some helpful things to keep in mind. First keep in mind that items are priced to sell “as is,” but that term does not mean broken or soiled. For consignment purposes, “as is” means the items is one of a kind, and/or NOT in need of repair.
Ask the staff to help. At B&B Design and Consign, that’s what we do and have done for years. If you have colorful plates, will they match some cobalt blue glasses? You may not have time to mull it over at home after a visit to the store, the deals at consignment shops move quickly!
Most consignment stores have mark down policies, meaning over a designated number of days the item will go down a percentage. Therein lies the gamble! That bookshelf that fits your needs perfectly may not be there if you leave it and wait to return to purchase on the date of the mark down. You’ll help yourself by having notes and measurements when you shop. For example: jot down the dimensions of the wall where you want a sofa. (B&B keeps tape measures on hand to confirm the sizes.) Remember, the depth of furniture pieces. A unique bar cart on bike wheels from France may be four feet long, but if it comes three feet into the room will it stick out too far? You’ll want to know because it won’t be at B&B for long! Bring visual aids to help you shop. If you’re considering a painting for the dining room wall, bring a paint sample to help determine if the colors will work. To say your wall is taupe with designer white trim can translate into multiple colors. There are various shades of color. The paint stores have color charts and they are free for the asking. Bring this with you as the color palettes will vary! Similarly, have a swatch of fabric that you’re considering to complement an existing chair. Wicker is always in style on the islands, but will the fabric covering the cushions work with what you have? You’ll know better with a swatch sample from home. Clip the picture from a magazine that caught your eye to keep you focused on what it is you’re imagining for your home. If it’s a traditional, mahogany cabinet you’re wanting,
As a consignor, you want to get the most for your items. So too does the consignment shop, because they are splitting the profit from the sale with you when the item sells. Consider several things when deciding whether, what, and with whom to consign. The relationship established between consignor and consignment shop is important. It is based on trust. Who consigns and/ or buys in consignment is a matter of confidentiality. You’ll want to visit the consignment shop and talk to the staff. Are they friendly, helpful, and available? These are the people who will be representing you and your items. Consignment policies and procedures should be presented at the outset, including whether you receive a report or something in writing confirming what is consigned, and the consignment shop’s policy for payment to the consignor. Notice how items are presented, or merchandised. For example, is it appealing, if not intriguing the way a room is displayed? Blue & White ceramic ginger jars, vases and jugs are trending again. When paired with a gilded mirror at B&B, you’ll walk away confident with the look you’re trying to achieve.
Take a picture of the larger items you’d like to sell, noting size, color, manufacturer if possible, to share with the staff when you’re discussing potential consignment. It would be frustrating to show up with a table and find that it won’t sell without chairs! Think about timing too. Some items are seasonal. Those holiday decorations may sell well in November and December, but not in July. Similarly, 4th of July items won’t sell in December. Be realistic in your expectations. As fantastic as your items are, they are gently used and are priced accordingly. Pricing is set by the staff with the goal of getting the most money for the consignor while ensuring the best deal for a buyer. Furniture depreciates over time. Artwork value can ride a wave of interest, making its value rise and fall with current tastes. That mauve chair that was popular in the 1980s is not going to sell as red. While the average retailer offers specific makes and styles, choices within furniture and home accessories consignment stores provide options without these limits. So before you go to the big box stores, consider wandering through B&B’s showrooms filled with local and international treasures. Whether you’re consigning or buying, given the diversity and cultural advantages of the Golden Isles, you’ll find a visit to B&B to be a wise investment. B&B Design and Consign is located at 2483 Demere Road, Suite 101 and are open every day except Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. They can also be reached at 912.268.4940 or visit their website at bandbdesignconsign.com. we DO NOT welcome, and that’s the rise in mosquito population! Because mosquitoes love warm, humid environments and breed anywhere standing water is available, the Georgia Coast is a prime spot for these annoying pests to flourish. Not only are mosquitoes a nuisance to individuals and families hoping to spend time outdoors, they also have the potential to spread disease. West Nile Virus, Encephalitis,
show huge numbers of mosquito populations throughout the U.S and coastal regions. Today, because we know so much about mosquitos, we have steps we can take to reduce the population and protect your family and pets.
and Zika are just a few of the mosquito-borne illnesses of concern. While products containing DEET can certainly help prevent mosquito bites temporarily, a comprehensive mosquito reduction program that addresses breeding sites and resting locations is the most effective way to dramatically reduce mosquito populations on your property. Did you know that a mosquito can fly 1 to 1.5 miles per hour? They detect hosts by sight, observing movement, and infrared radiation emitted by warm bodies. Some things that also might attract a mosquito to you are an increase in activity that causes you to produce carbon dioxide and lactic acid, sweating, and dark clothing. Even a full moon has been said to increase mosquito activity by 500%! Mosquitos complete a 4-stage life cycle called metamorphosis in under 14 days. They begin as an egg, develop into larvae, morph in pupae and emerge as adults. The first three stages of this cycle require water. So, because of the mild and wet winter, 2017 will
Because mosquitos require standing water to complete their life cycle, insuring that all standing water has been removed from around your home is the first step to creating a less inviting area for mosquitos to breed. Any water that has been standing for more than 7 days can become a potential breeding site. Dumping out this stagnate water is important to reducing mosquito populations around your home. Places you might check for standing water include bird baths, buckets or barrels, gutters, drains, children’s toys, tires, and water bowls for pets. Along with addressing these breeding sites, a mosquito reduction program by a pest professional will drastically decrease mosquitos and create a more enjoyable outdoor experience for you and your family. American Pest Control has been serving North Georgia for 45 years and is now providing full-service pest control on St. Simons Island. We offer integrated pest management services, termite protection, fire ant management, mosquito reduction service and more. Local
technician, Jason Griffin, lives on the island which means that he is familiar with the environment and pests that are prevalent in the area. St. Simons Island manager, Connie Couch is a well-known name in the pest control industry for his knowledge on pest and termites. Due to the wet climate and bountiful vegetation, regularly scheduled pest prevention service can combat pest issues common to the Golden Isles. American Pest Control offers a quarterly service, which is completed every three months, to create a continuous barrier between your home and outside invaders. In addition, we offer complimentary follow-up services if you experience problems in between your paid services. We use the most eco-friendly and effective products on the market today to protect your home and family. American Pest Control also offers a mosquito reduction program to minimize the population of mosquitos in your yard, which we recommend in humid climates. So, on December 7, we departed Jacksonville, Florida at 6:00 a.m. en route to Atlanta, where we boarded our flight to San Juan, Puerto Rico. In San Juan, we were met by Viking Star personnel who loaded us and our bags on a bus for the 30-minute trip to our ship and the beginning of our ten-day cruise to eight different ports and islands in the Caribbean. 60

As on most cruises, passengers have a variety of shore excursions from which to choose. Some shore excursions are included in the cruise package and some may be reserved at additional cost. We did some of each. Rather than bore you with each of our excursions, I’ll only mention the most notable. In Saint Lucia, we opted to take the aerial tram ride through the rainforest. It was breathtakingly beautiful and well worth the extra cost. And in Barbados, we toured Harrison’s Cave, a spectacular underground world with stalactites, stalagmites, streams and waterfalls.
Aboard the Viking Star, we enjoyed fabulous food and entertainment. The Norwegian Spa was beyond description. And the workout facility was superb. I’m so happy I took advantage of this gym as I only gained four pounds during the 10 days. I worked hard enough to maintain my weight, but the food was just too good! We returned to San Juan early in the morning hours ten days after our departure. We had to be out of our staterooms by 8:00 a.m. as another cruise was scheduled to depart on the Viking Star that afternoon. We were bussed to the airport where we, unfortunately, had a four hour wait for our plane. That was probably the only really disappointing part of our trip. The San Juan airport is not the most comfortable airport we’ve ever experienced.
Taking that birthday trip was a terrific choice. Choosing to sail on a smaller ship was even better. One of the best things about taking a cruise on a smaller vessel is the opportunity to meet the other passengers and staff. We met the man who designed the opening and closing ceremonies for the Calgary Winter Olympic Games in 1988. What an amazing story! And we also met several folks with whom we discovered we have friends in common. It really is a small world! And after our experience aboard the Viking Star, we can definitely say that we recommend exploring that world with a cruise!

hen the sun rises on May 6, the Brunswick Golden Isles Airport will be teeming with hundreds of volunteers creating “the best day of their lives” for 95 World War II, Korea and Vietnam veterans. A full year in the making, the 2017 Coastal Georgia Honor Flight will abound with smiles, greetings and more than a few emotional moments during this day of recognition and remembrance for area veterans. Mark “Beau” Beaudry, 2017 flight leader, will be front and center, along with 2017 board
president Dave Olender. Beaudry, a big-hearted, enthusiastic Air Force veteran, will assume command of the day’s logistics. For Beaudry, no task is too great or too small to merit total focus. Olender, a Vietnam Army veteran, is a strategic thinker with penetrating eyes that miss nothing and anticipate everything. Together, they have led a committee that has corralled, cajoled, organized, and raised funds for an event requiring as much logistical support as any Armed Forces battalion headed to a military campaign. Additional 2017 Honor Flight board members include: Chandra Kendall, Gary Tjaden, James Vivenzio, Bennie
Williams, Alex Thompson, Beth Martin Lane, Duane Harris, and Alysia English. The board embraces President John F. Kennedy’s words, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” Olender sums it up well: “There are never enough words to say ‘thank you’ to our veterans for their efforts on behalf of our country. Words are not enough, so community volunteers collectively will spend approximately 6,300 hours to create each Honor Flight. That’s roughly equivalent to 3 people working fulltime for a year!”
“The WWII Memorial was completed 59 years after the end of the war and the WWII veterans were dying in large numbers. I took my father, a Battle of the Bulge veteran, to see the memorial during opening weekend. For the first time, I saw the emotions he had about the war because he never previously discussed it. He found it hard to describe the beauty, honor and emotions upon seeing the memorial.” - Chandra Capps Kendall, Board Member 64
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
Strong community support and donations have almost doubled the number of veterans who can be recognized, from 2016’s 54 veterans to the 2017 maxed-out flight, which will transport 95 veterans, 60 guardians and a full complement of support personnel. The 2017 Honor Flight costs $1000 per veteran; all contributions are tax-deductible, with one hundred percent directly supporting the event.
“He bottled up his ‘Nam experiences and put them all behind him, all these years. During Honor Flight, those thoughts and feelings came roaring out. When he got home, he felt comfortable enough for the first time to start telling his grown children about his service. Now, he talks about it with anybody who’ll listen. His demons have been released, thanks to the experience of Honor Flight. And he is not alone.”
Beaudry can’t say enough about the support, “Pre-planning is critical, so we hold several joint meetings at the airport. The May 6 event brings over 200 additional people to the airport in the morning which include those on the flight and volunteers, plus all our supplies for the day. Wheelchairs, food, water, medical equipment, oxygen generators, cameras, police, firefighters, etc. The sheer volume is overwhelming. TSA has to search and certify all of the material that moves into the secure area. Our police officers direct traffic and secure roadways both in the morning and evening. Airport personnel coordinate every detail, all while performing their regular jobs. The evening homecoming draws an even larger crowd. It is an amazing collaboration, without which Honor Flight would not be possible.”
– Mark “Beau” Beaudry, Board Member
Immediately after each year’s flight, the group initiates planning for the following year. After scheduling the date with Arlington National Cemetery and the Honor Flight Network, Olender and Beaudry identify and secure a charter commercial aircraft, large enough to accommodate the targeted number of veterans and support. The aircraft stands as the single largest expense for an Honor Flight: over $58,000 out of a $95,000 budget.
Olender states, “People involved in other volunteer work understand the large number of moving parts. This effort is perhaps a bit more complicated because we have three different locations. In the Golden Isles, the Baltimore airport and Washington, DC, for the tour. “People kept coming up to him, shaking his hand and thanking him for his service. He had tears rolling down his face and I had the
The Glynn County Airport Commission and Brunswick Golden Isles Airport staff wholeheartedly support Honor Flight, dedicating numerous hours both prior to and during the flight day. Extensive planning meetings leave nothing to chance—from Homeland Security TSA pre-certification of passengers, parking and traffic flow, accommodation of regular airport passengers, to security and separately marked event walkways. In addition to airport personnel, Glynn County police and fire departments offer hands-on security and safety. The board also secures volunteers divided into major functional areas: community events; volunteer coordination; applications; medical; finance and fund-raising; publicity; training; mail call; veteran gifts; and food.
same. When we got our composure back, a young girl came up to him, handed him a flower she had picked, took his hand and thanked him for his service. That’s not something I’ll forget.” – James Vivenzio, Board Member
We are dealing with the federal government, monument scheduling and Homeland Security at two different airports, not to mention the aging and health concerns of our WWII and Korea veterans. Our WWII veterans are given priority, so we constantly adjust participants until close to the flight date. If there is not enough space for all applicants, we automatically add their names to next year’s flight list.” The 2017 flight includes three physicians and three nurses who volunteer their time to accompany the event for the day. ince 1928, Sea Island has been known as an exceptional destination appealing to those who appreciate luxurious accommodations, gracious service, and heartfelt hospitality. The resort features five miles of private beach, a Beach Club, tennis and squash centers, Yacht Club, Shooting School, and Camp Cloister, as well as three championship golf courses. The only U.S. resort to host a G-8 Summit of world leaders, Sea Island also provides exceptional settings and service for conferences and executive retreats. This year, The Cloister at Sea Island, The Lodge at Sea Island, The Georgian Room restaurant, and The Spa at Sea Island have earned coveted FiveStar designations in Forbes Travel Guide’s 59th annual list of Star Award-winning hospitality establishments worldwide. This makes an amazing nine years in a row that Sea Island has
swept the Five-Star awards, receiving four prestigious Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star ratings. What’s truly remarkable, however, is that Sea Island is the only resort in the world that has earned four Five-Star ratings for nine consecutive years. That is a phenomenal accomplishment! Since its opening in 2001, The Lodge at Sea Island, an intimate 40-room hideaway surrounded by stunning ocean views and impeccably groomed championship golf courses, has been recognized as a Forbes Five-Star property. The elegant Georgian Room was first awarded the Five-Star rating in 2008 and is the only restaurant in the state of Georgia to carry this distinction. Following suit in 2009, The Cloister and The Spa at Sea Island also achieved Forbes Five-Star ratings. Recent improvements at The Cloister have increased its total available space for indoor and outdoor meetings and events to 87,000 square feet. The newly added Garden Wing comprises 63 beautiful new guest rooms, as well as an opulent 5,000-square-foot
ballroom. “Sea Island is proud to once again earn the honorable Forbes Five-Star recognitions,” said Scott Steilen, President and CEO of Sea Island Company. “We are grateful for our dedicated staff who deliver gracious hospitality every day, which encourages our guests to return year after year.” Forbes Travel Guide’s Star Ratings recognize the finest hotels, restaurants, and spas in the world. These ratings serve as the most authoritative guideposts for guests seeking exceptional travel experiences. Visit seaisland.com to learn more about the Five Star experience at Sea Island.

common areas beckon residents and visitors to sit and chat under the skylight or grab a cozy chair in the library. These aren’t just on the main floor, either; each floor has common areas with ample seating and pleasant nooks that all residents can enjoy. There’s an outdoor courtyard that promises to be full of blooms and will provide a lovely area for residents and guests to relax under the trees on sunny island days. Thrive creates a living community rich in details that serve the senses. The air is lightly scented like a fresh breeze. Digital signage communicates daily events and weather and replays images of the good times that residents have had in the community. Throughout the hallways and common areas where residents congregate and socialize, music that seniors recognize and love plays quietly. There is an on-site salon, an exercise room equipped with senior safe fitness equipment powered by compressed air resistance which is custom adjusted to each user through an electronic scan, and an activities room that encourages socialization and use of the It’s Never 2 Late software to stimulate brain fitness. From the art on the walls to the comfortable and attractive furniture provided by Pierce and Parker, this is a place that feels like home – or, better yet, a well-appointed resort where you will be pampered and treated like a special guest. At every level of the assisted living care they provide, the goal of the Thrive Resident Well-
ness Program is to return freedom to seniors who may have been isolated at home and cut off from social interaction, mental stimulation, and growth. Thrive’s multi-faceted program empowers lively seniors who want to keep living connected, active, and purposeful lives. It also inspires and encourages seniors who may need a boost to “get back in the game.” For five years, Thrive has been shaking up the senior living industry by challenging dull traditions of boring communities. Using methods informed by extensive senior-based research conducted by The Harvard Medical School, they’re proving that there’s an exciting alternative way through the Resident Wellness Program that enables seniors to engage life. The care, safety, and quality of life of their senior residents is the focus of Thrive’s mission. They recognize, however, that there are factors

Notwithstanding, they believe that each and every one of their residents should be served in fun, dignified, and meaningful ways. By understanding each resident’s needs and interests, adopting helpful technologies, and creating innovating programs, Thrive is at the forefront of transforming senior living from “home” to a place where, through connection, purpose and an increased sense of wellness, seniors do in fact thrive. The Thrive at Frederica staff is excited to be joining the local community and is looking forward to becoming involved in and even hosting some neighborhood events. They recently served up chili at the Rotary Red Hot Chili Cook-Off and are excited to be showing off Chef Bethany Fahey’s skills at A Taste of Glynn. They’re even planning to hold an Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt for neighborhood children on Saturday, April 8. Since you’ll be seeing more of the staff’s friendly faces around the island, we thought we’d introduce a few of these fine folks to you now: Jennifer Stratton joined the Thrive team as Executive Director in August of 2015. Originally from
the Midwest, she’s been a resident of Coastal Georgia for almost 7 years. With the experience of opening six other senior communities, she is grateful for this opportunity to make a difference and help others right here in our local community. Jennifer’s husband is the General Manager of the Hampton Inn and Suites on Jekyll Island. They have a son attending Georgia Southern University, and a daughter at Glynn Academy. Physical Plant Manager, Mike Evanoff has been busy during the final stages of getting the building ready to open. Originally from Illinois, Mike has had an interesting career. In his “retirement,” he has spent time in the hospitality industry, and understands the operations of a large property. His organizational skills, analytic abilities, and diligence in preventative maintenance, are invaluable in keeping all functions of the building and residents’ suites in proper working order. Kelly Johnson’s title of Director of Excitement says it all: she’s full of adventure, passion, and motivation that will keep you smil-
ing with a pep in your step and a belly full of laughter. Kelly has a true passion and gift for making a difference in the lives of our seniors. She received a B.S. and minor degrees in Psychology from Western Carolina University, 1986. Kelly and her husband are new to St. Simons Island and have a son living in Jacksonville and a daughter in college in Virginia. Business Office Manager, Marie Walker-Garmon is a native of the Golden Isles who joins the Thrive team from the Southeast Georgia Health System where she worked in the business office at the Senior Care Center. Her personality and love for seniors is easy to see as she goes about her work and her strong skill set and experience will be a great asset to Thrive at Frederica. She looks forward to getting to know everyone who steps through Thrive’s doors.

ISLAND IMPRESSIONS BY FR. TOM PURDY, RECTOR OF CHRIST CHURCH
Fear Not
W
e’ve recently introduced our girls to the Star Wars movies. I forgot how much wisdom is embedded in those films. While watching again, I was struck by Jedi Master Yoda’s teaching on fear. “Fear,” he says, “is the path to the dark side.” As he explains to his proté76
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
gé, “Fear leads to anger; anger leads to hate; hate leads to suffering.” For a little animatronic green dude, he’s quite insightful. Fear is incredibly powerful. Fear can make us do things we don’t want to, or normally wouldn’t, do. Fear can also keep us from doing things we want to do. It is the tool of the bully and the bane of the bullied. It is

Fear affects all of us. I find the day and the season of Easter (yes, it’s a fifty-day season) to be helpful in this regard. The Easter message is not about Easter egg hunts and chocolate bunnies; it’s about so much more. Easter is an antidote to fear. Easter reminds us that even death gives way to the life-giving power of God. Death is perhaps the great granddaddy of all fears. Sometimes we think we’re going to die, whether it’s of embarrassment when we’re teased in middle school (which can feel like dying) or when we have to admit that the doctor did just tell us we have cancer.
OU
IV E R S AR
I’ve been afraid of all sorts of things. I was always more afraid of what my parents would do if I got in trouble at school than I was of the teachers and administrators. I have been afraid of losing my child at times when I’m in public and realize they’re not beside me. And, of course, there is my fear of spiders. I will own up to an episode that involved me standing on the sofa as I hunted down a wolf spider that skittered across the floor one night while watching TV. I stayed safely on my perch until I slayed the hairy beast with my daughter’s cowgirl boot (after missing it with flip-flops and another shoe). I behaved in school, I watch my kids, but I still don’t like spiders.
At the center of Easter is a little thing called resurrection. Christian theology tells us that Jesus Christ was raised from the dead, and that through his resurrection we have all been invited to join in living a resurrected life through him. While many may think resurrection is just something that happens after we die, resurrection is also about what happens to us today. A resurrection life is one that is lived without fear. It’s amazing to consider how we would live if we were not afraid of anything, not even death itself.
NN
the weapon of the powerful and often attributed to the weak. But the truth is that fear is much more omnipresent. We know that bullies are really afraid, and the powerful are too – afraid that they will lose their power. When it comes right down to it, we’re all afraid of something. Our fears motivate us, sometimes for good, and sometimes for the not so good.
A resurrection life is about accepting an invitation not to be afraid of what others say about us, of being unloved, of not having enough, of failure, or even of other people. It’s incredibly freeing to admit what we are afraid of and then realize we need not be afraid of it. When Christians say that Jesus calls us to new life, this is the new life of which we speak. Whether you believe the Christian story about Jesus that lies at the heart of this month’s major holiday or not, one of the themes of Easter is much needed in our world: “Do not be afraid.” There are people everywhere trying to convince us otherwise, and yet God’s steady message remains the same. We can choose to believe whichever message we want. I have chosen to trust God, chosen a new life, chosen light, chosen courage … except when spiders are involved.

In close, I’ll paraphrase Yoda again, because he also taught that once we choose the path of fear, it will dominate our future. “Consume you it will,” he says. The only thing consumed this Easter ought to be chocolate. Eat the bunny’s ears first, and do not be afraid.

ties and insurance licenses, Jones believes now couldn’t be a better time to reach out to residents and help them prepare for the changes to come in the financial industry. He provides tailored investment strategies to families and business owners by getting to know them and understanding their situations, using an established process, and staying on track. Jones can be reached at the Brunswick branch office at 1430 Newcastle Street or by phone at 912.264.8865. Kathy Sensabaugh recently joined the St. Simons Island office of Edward Jones as a branch office administrator trainee. “A branch office administrator is not only responsible for the daily operation of the branch, but must also provide top-
level client service and marketing support for my activities,” said James Sexton, local financial advisor for the firm. Sensabaugh must complete the firm’s in-depth training program within one year to graduate from the trainee designation into the position of branch office administrator. “I know she will be a terrific asset to our team as we strive to provide our clients with unparalleled personal service,” Sexton added. Sensabaugh is originally from Staunton, Virginia and moved to St. Simons Island a year ago. Sexton invites the public to attend the Edward Jones St. Simons Island branch open house at 3409 Frederica Road on April 26 from 5:00-7:00 p.m.

1942: War Comes to the Waters of Our Coast
T
his month marks the 75th anniversary of one of the most memorable events in Coastal Georgia history. In the early hours of April 8, 1942, area residents were shocked from their sleep when explosions at sea reverberated along the coast. Two unarmed American tankers, SS Oklahoma and SS Esso Baton Rouge, carrying a total of 190,000 barrels of oil, had been torpedoed by a German U-boat ten miles offshore. Theron P. Davenport, captain of the Oklahoma, left a chilling account of the attack: “We at once realized we had been torpedoed. … The ship sank in about a minute, but the Atlantic at that spot is only about 45 feet deep. One end of the vessel sank to the bottom while the other end poked up. That saved some of us. There was an explosion in the engine room and this is believed to have trapped many of the missing crew. Exactly half the crew was lost.” The U-boat then headed south to torpedo the Esso Baton Rouge before returning to shell the Oklahoma with a deck gun, after her crew had moved away in lifeboats. In all, 22 merchant mariners lost their lives. After daybreak, the Coast Guard and the Civil Air Patrol, as well as civilians, mobilized to rescue and aid the tanker crews. A patrol aircraft located the ships by 7 a.m., but it took many hours to complete the rescue operation. St. Simons Island native Olaf Olsen was on Cumberland Island managing the Candler family property when a Civil Air Patrol plane dropped him a message about the tankers, weighted down by a wrench. Olsen immediately joined the rescue effort, captaining the Candler yacht. It was faster than the Coast Guard vessel, and Olsen took a shorter route, reaching the lifeboats first. He took them in tow and transferred the wounded to the Coast Guard boat before
making his way to the Coast Guard dock on the Frederica River next to the causeway. His daughter Sonja, 8 years old at the time, remembers that the captain of the Esso Baton Rouge, covered in dirt and grease, came to their home at Gascoigne Bluff that evening.
St. Simons Sound for initial repairs, before they were taken north for major repairs. In appreciation for Bubber’s help, the captain gave him a brass bell and a life ring from the ship – poignant reminders of the day World War II came to the Golden Isles.
Olsen’s teenage son Bubber spent the next few days taking the Esso Baton Rouge captain and engineer to and from the St. Simons sea buoy where they were picked up by another boat and taken to their partially submerged ship. Both tankers were raised and towed into
This month’s images show the torpedoed Oklahoma in drydock for repairs and the Esso Baton Rouge bell. Each May the bell is rung in honor of fallen mariners at the Maritime Day ceremony held on the St. Simons Pier.
