PUBLISHER’S LETTER
Obsolete Parking
I
was having breakfast the other day with my morning crew when the conversation veered from the usual, “What did you watch on Netflix last night?” and “How many times have you worn that shirt this week?” to an interesting topic. My buddy, Pete Joris, started telling a story about a friend of his who had purchased a Betamax machine back in the day. Unfortunately, the Betamax went the way of the dinosaurs. That got us on the subject of what items could become obsolete in the next 5 to 10 years. We surmised that some things like paper maps, shopping malls, DVDs, calculators, telephone landlines, and parking meters will probably go the way of the horse buggy whip, or the horse buggy itself.

ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
As a teen driver going “parking,” I had an AM/FM radio in my car. This was later replaced by an 8-track stereo system, which was then upgraded to cassette, then to a CD stereo system, and finally to wifi connectivity using Bluetooth. Instead of being limited to just 10 songs on a Bee Gees 8-track cartridge, now – with Spotify – I can now listen to EVERY song the Bee Gees ever sang. The technological advancements we have made in just the last 20 years are amazing. The world never stops moving forward. On a seemingly weekly basis, new technology, new services, practically new everything seems to replace an older version. And now they’re predicting that in 10 years no one will even OWN a car. We’ll just ride in driverless vehicles that we summon on our smartphones.
I guess in the future (or maybe now), teenagers won’t know how to read a map, hang out at the mall, replace a battery in a calculator, or use the phrase, “Mom, it’s for you,” when answering the home phone. I don’t even KNOW my mom’s cell number, but I remember what my old home phone number was growing up. Anyone who is older than 50 and grew up here on the island remembers that back then you only had to dial the number 8 and then the four digits to reach someone’s home. Instead of dialing 638-2039, you only had to dial 8-2039 to reach my house. Sometimes technological advancements don’t make things easier, though. I’m 57 years old and now my mom has the ability to call me and check up on me anytime, anywhere, via smartphone! She couldn’t do that when I was 17! Thank goodness I’m too old to go “parking.”

O
ne of the benefits of living in the South is that we have the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors virtually every month of the year. And what better place to do that than in your own backyard? Whether you love sitting outside and reading quietly by an outdoor fireplace or having your friends and family over to party around the pool, the total enjoyment of your
20
ELEGANT ISLAND LIVING
home really lies beyond its four walls. In addition to full service landscaping, sodding, fertilization, pest control, irrigation, and lawn maintenance, Coastal Landscape & Design offers outdoor design to enhance your space and meet your desires for the perfect oasis in your own backyard. Whether you are adding permanent hardscape enhancements like a veranda fire pit or a barbeque grill station, Coastal Landscape & Design will customize each project to your space and budget. They can build you the outdoor kitchen of your dreams or a fun and safe backyard play area for the kids. Don’t forget they can also help you with lighting to optimize your enjoyment of your outdoor space in the evening hours, creating a magical setting you’ll love both day and night. The team at Coastal Landscape & Design strongly believes that landscaping services are not limited to the
care and maintenance of lawns, flowers, and foliage. They’re just waiting for your call to create attractive and practical outdoor spaces that expand your living area beyond the rooms of your house. With a vision of beautifying the coastal area he called home, Mark Miller established Coastal Landscape & Design, Inc. in 1993, after having worked as a certified landscape gardener with Sea Island Company. What started as a lawn maintenance service quickly expanded to become one of the only locally-owned and operated full service landscape businesses in the Golden Isles. Mark’s wife, Andrea, joined the company as Business Development Manager in 2004, overseeing daily office management, including accounting, marketing, and business development. When asked what she wants
people to know about Coastal Landscape & Design, Andrea said, “We love our customers and think of them as our family. My husband Mark has over 20 years of experience and he guarantees our company’s work to each and every customer, no matter how big or small they are.” Together with their team of employees, they’re beautifying the coast, one lawn at a time. With a wide variety of both residential
and commercial landscape projects, Coastal Landscape & Design’s handiwork can be seen prominently throughout the Golden Isles. Woody Folsom Automotive owner Woody Folsom raves about the work Coastal Landscape & Design completed at his commercial properties. “I was so happy with the way my new Ford dealership landscaping turned out, that I chose Coastal Landscape & Design to do my new Dodge dealership as well! Mark’s attention to detail is why I chose him. I get compliments every day on my landscaping because it is different and unique. I would definitely recommend Mark, Andrea and their whole team (and I do, often). They’re the best I’ve ever worked with.” Something else that makes Coastal Landscape & Design stand out from other landscape companies is their impressive five acre garden center. Located on Hwy. 341 in Brunswick by McKinna Auto Sales, the garden center is stocked with florals of both seasonal and perennial varieties, as well as hearty palms and other greenery just waiting to find their home. Set up a consultation with the experienced staff
of Coastal Landscape & Design and use the garden center as your inspiration to decide what will work best in your private sanctuary. If you’ve decided to finally get working on that “Honey Do” outdoor DYI project, make Coastal Landscape & Design your first stop. Take a look at their staging areas for ideas and get advice from the experts on creating a space that will allow you to brag to all your friends about how easy it was to make and maintain. But be careful, your new backyard haven might be so comfortable that they’ll want to come enjoy it with you and may never want to leave! Mark your calendar for Coastal Landscape & Design’s annual Spring Fling on Saturday, May 4th. Make a point to stop by the garden center at 120 McKinna Place in Brunswick between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. for this free community event and check out what’s in bloom for 2019. There will be a variety of vendors and activities on site, including animal adoptions, food and drinks, games and prizes, as well as a live radio remote. It’s a wonderful way to spend a Saturday with the whole family surrounded by nature’s beauty. You can check the Coastal Landscape & Design Facebook page for information about vendors and sales that will be happening that day. To find out more about the services Coastal Landscape & Design offers and see some breathtaking landscapes that they have created, visit coastallandscapeanddesign.com. Whether you’re looking for weekly, monthly, seasonal, or annual lawn maintenance and landscaping, or outdoor area living enhancements, they have what you need.

I love camellias because they’re like roses in winter. In our garden we have camellias blooming from December through March. Gorgeous! My passion is working with the community in outreach projects like visiting Magnolia Manor and Thrive. Cassina offers these residents an opportunity to make their own fresh flower arrangements to take back to their individual apartments.

We moved here from New Jersey in 2006 and I built our garden from scratch. We were invited to show on the Garden Walk in 2012 and again in 2016, when I was co-chair. I was the first male member of Cassina Garden Club in 2013; there are now two. For many years we have grown the fascinating “Night Flowering Cereus” which not only flowers just once a year, but for only one night, about midnight. It’s not too difficult to grow, but also not too easy to capture a photo!

Lantana is one of my favorite plants. It is available in a multitude of colors, very fragrant, drought tolerant, easy to grow, and flowers continuously from spring until frost. It even seems happy growing wild at the beach entrance of Gould’s Inlet. But the best part about this plant is that the butterflies, bees, and dragonflies love it too! 28

other and daughter entrepreneurs, Rita Boland and Auret Cavedo started Island Drapes & Upholstery LLC as a homebased business in a small studio seven years ago. Rita says, “Business has been so phenomenal that in June 2018 we vacated our rented premises and purchased the old veterinary hospital on Demere Road, remodeled it to suit our needs, and relocated. The move has been a huge success with a tremendous increase in foot traffic.” Creating beautiful spaces is the duo’s passion. This requires extensive knowledge of fabrics, styles and keeping up to date with the latest trends and colors. They do everything to create the feel and aesthetic their clients and designers seek. Auret says of their clients, “Early on, just starting out, we were able to establish a very good relationship with most local designers and architects on the island. Through word of mouth and great referrals from our local designers, we began working with designers from Atlanta, as well as several from New York, who we still serve today.” Rita adds, “Designers commission custom work for almost every project they work on, and we are here to make their visions come to life.”
Craftmanship
Custom craftsmanship is a true commitment, as a significant amount of time is spent in the actual planning, sourcing of products, pattern drawing, cutting, finding and matching fabrics. Difficult windows and spaces need to be laser measured and calculated for possible installation problems etc. Auret says popular consumer culture’s desire for “cheap” sometimes makes it difficult for them to justify the cost of their services. “However,” she says, “compare a store bought drapery panel to our custom panel, and we need not say another word.” Rita and Auret take pride in their reputation for exceptional quality, a constant awareness of fashion trends and devotion to unsurpassed service. They have a large product library with endless options for customers to browse in a pleasant setting.

Now at The Dodge [the former home of beloved author Eugenia Price], I work in my own vegetable garden and yard with my husband Russell: I mow the grass and he does the digging, edging, and manual labor. We grow LOTS of jalapeños and other peppers and make pepper jelly to share. It keeps us off the golf course where we could do some real damage! My favorite flower would be gaura (or whirling butterflies). I love this plant because bees love it and deer don’t eat it!

ired Collaborative is a creative concept pairing Designer and Owner Jessica Been’s two favorite layers in the design process: lighting and rugs. Having come from the interior design profession with a focus on branded environments in both higher education and in workplace design, as a designer, Jessica desires to create meaningful space for her clients. Space that allows clients to connect with impactful details in design. The Wired Studio boasts a beautifully curated collection of one-of-a-kind Turkish rugs and four timelessly classic lines of lighting in collaboration with Hudson Valley Lighting Group, a specialty lighting line. Wired Collaborative offers one-ofa-kind Turkish rugs along with a handful of Indo-Oushaks. Wired’s rugs are sourced from all over Anatolia (Turkey) with designs that are specific to their regional locales. Within each warp and weft, there is a handwoven story defined by a unique design named from the specific region of Turkey in which the rug was made. These regional designs are defined by specific motifs, patterns, and colors uniquely representative to each area of Eastern, Central, and Western Turkey, defining not only cultural milestones, but the makers themselves. The Wired Studio also has the ability to work directly with both contacts in Turkey and Atlanta to curate a variety of bespoke pieces for any client need. Please feel free 38

My favorite plant in my garden is milkweed or Asceplias tuberosa. It is a native perennial that blooms almost all year in our area. It will attract butterflies and hummingbirds and is the only host plant for the monarch butterfly. Monarchs will lay their eggs on milkweed and you can see their whole life cycle. It is a great way to show kids the stages of a butterfly from egg to chrysalis to caterpillar to butterfly.

t’s time to do some spring cleaning! While most people dread the thought, it is an important part of home maintenance. Nothing beats the look of a beautiful and spotless home exterior. This “picture perfect” effect is how we like to imagine our property, but that “perfection” requires ongoing professional maintenance to ensure that reality lives up to the vision. Cleaning the exterior and roof, washing windows, pressure washing driveways, pavers, and hardscapes are all essential in maintaining your home’s health and lasting curb appeal. Clearview Services South are experts in tackling these spring cleaning jobs so you can relax, knowing that you are in good hands, and spend your time making great memories with family and friends.
Offering a multitude of cleaning services performed by professional technicians, a commitment to excellent customer service, and a reputation backed by the third-party vetting company, The Seal, validating backgrounds, licenses and insurance coverage, Clearview can take the stress out of spring cleaning for you. If you were putting off power washing your home because you’re worried about possible damage to paint, stucco, or tabby, Clearview uses a soft wash system which uses a mix of chemicals to restore your siding, eaves, and trim to their bright and beautiful colors without a need to repaint. Soft washing is also beneficial for roof cleaning, because our climate can wreak havoc on shingles. This system removes black stripes, algae, mold, and mildew in a way that protects your roofing, and your investment in the long
run. Clearview applies pressure washing for hardscapes like stairs, patios, and pavers to kill mold, moss, mildew and erase dirt and grime. In their window cleaning process, Clearview ensures that glass, window sills, panes, mullions, and frames are all safely cleaned and kept in good condition. They also can provide glass restoration services on exterior and interior glass, including skylights and shower enclosures. You can rest easy knowing that Clearview’s cleaning technicians are well trained, and will always conduct themselves with professionalism and courtesy while working at your home. Your home
is one of the single most important financial investments that you can ever make in your life. When the time comes for you to put your home on the market, you want to make sure that you get the maximum return for your investment. To assist you in that process, your friends at Signature Properties Group have put together a few practical ideas that will hopefully help you as you navigate these waters.

Preparing Your Home for Selling by Anna Johnson and Kay Love
T
he sheer logistics of tangibly getting your home ready for the market can be a daunting, sometimes unnerving, task, especially if you have occupied the house for quite some time. Since sorting through all the “stuff” that comes with preparing your home for sale can be overwhelming, we offer these simple suggestions that you can implement to make sure your house is ready when that time comes. 44

DECLUTTER. That “stuff” accumulates the longer that you live in a place. A good rule to follow is if you haven’t worn it in the last year, give it to charity. This will help thin out those closets and make them look more spacious. If you’re downsizing, it might be time to decide that there’s just no room for those old high school trophies that have been collecting dust in the attic for years. A good idea is to take pictures of such memorabilia to preserve the memory without taking up space. Discard furniture you no longer need
or put items in storage in order to make rooms feel more spacious. Giving your home a fresh coat of paint is one of the most cost-effective ways to spruce up your home, and it can be a great DIY project. REPAIR DEFECTS. Does your house have leaky faucets? Rusted drains? Loose drawer handles? Making these small fixes can make a big difference to those potential buyers with detail-oriented minds.
ADDRESS WATER STAINS. Your old water heater in the attic may have leaked before replacing it with a new one; however, the leftover water stain is still visible on the ceiling below. This could be a negative trigger for a prospective buyer and may mislead them into thinking that the problem still exists. Double check that the issue that initially caused the leak is resolved, then make any repairs to the walls or floors affected.

Spending the time and resources to update an outdated kitchen or bathroom may very well be worth the investment. FLOORING. Hardwood floors are a very desirable feature in a home, so you want to ensure that they look their best by fixing scratches and addressing dull areas. quickly that the process is very multifaceted and challenging. The two main concerns for anyone selling their home is setting the right price and finding a buyer who is willing to pay that price. Employing the services of a real estate professional ensures that you will have the tools, the resources, and the connections to sell your home more efficiently than doing it yourself. Real estate agents have access to the most up-to-date information about the recent sale of comparable homes, as well as other current listings in the neighborhood. Your agent has the education and experience to help you price your home appropriately to reflect the current market conditions. Most who choose the FSBO route tend to overprice their homes, which discourages buyers and results in having their property on the market for a lengthy period.

our home is one of the most significant financial investments you can make and when it comes to selling your house, you want to make sure you get top dollar for your investment. As the owner, you have every prerogative to undertake the selling of your property yourself. Why should you employ the services of a realtor when you could keep that portion of the proceeds in your bank account and sell your house yourself?
Of course, the extent of any improvements and modifications is ultimately dependent on the age and the condition of your home. But rest assured that upgrading your house can make the difference between getting retail value for your home as opposed to wholesale value. For more advice and information for preparing
Many have ventured to answer that last question by attempting to market and sell their home on their own, only to succumb to the solution that was always their first and best option:securing the services of a real estate professional. As for finding buyers, your agent will be aggressive with a marketing plan that includes showcasing your property to other agents and prospective buyers with professional photographs, open houses, as well as online marketing through multiple listing services, internet websites, and social media. The listing of your home is only the beginning of the job for your real estate professional. Your agent will be actively showing your home to prospective buyers, and negotiating terms of the sale whenever a client is secured. Phoebe Hoaster has been a REALTOR® for 42 years and was one of the founders of Signature Properties Group when it opened its doors in 2003. She has witnessed firsthand the exasperation of the homeowner who tries their hand at FSBO and offers some friendly advice for those contemplating that same decision. “If people really knew what a real estate agent does, they wouldn’t hesitate to go with us,” says Phoebe. “Once you get a buyer for your home, there is a ton of paperwork that is involved. and the comfort of having that knowledgeable and competent friend to walk with you through every step of this daunting process. “In some ways, I feel like a counselor,” says Phoebe. “Sometimes it’s not just about all the nuts and bolts of a real estate transaction. Sometimes it’s about helping my clients walk through an issue that has absolutely nothing at all to do with real estate. Knowing that I have helped relieve my client of some of the stress and anxiety that comes from selling or buying their home gives me great satisfaction.” Even with more information about the market readily available online, studies are showing that fewer homeowners are choosing to sell their house on their own, and with good reason. Nothing beats having the expertise and experience of a personal real estate professional guiding you through this significant time of your life. 46

he potential buyers of your home aren’t just looking for a place to sleep, they’re looking to fulfill their dreams, make memories, and improve their lifestyles. Staging your home for selling helps to achieve those dreams and creates a more emotional purchase that can generate more money for the seller. When I speak with my seller clients about staging their home, I am referring to a manner of decorating that is designed to showcase their home’s best assets, impress today’s buyers, and sell it as quickly as possible for the highest price possible. STAGING HOW-TO’S While there are plenty of room-specific staging tips, if you’re on a limited budget, it’s best to focus on big-picture improvements in the areas that will make the most significant difference in your home’s selling price. First, target items that need to be repaired and then focus on cosmetic issues. Start with the exterior and entrance since these are the first areas people see, then work your way through the living room, kitchen and bathrooms, the master bedroom and the outdoor living space, such as a back patio. The following items can and should be employed in as many rooms of the house as you can afford and have time to address.
FLOORING. Dirty, stained carpet is unattractive. Hardwood floors add value and elegance to a home and are perfect for buyers with allergies. Vinyl plank floors are gaining in popularity, having the look of hardwood while costing much less. Common areas like the living room, dining room and kitchen should be your primary focus for flooring; however, your bathrooms should take precedence as well. FURNITURE. Make sure furniture is the right size for the room. Furniture that is too big will make your room look smaller, while a room that is sparsely furnished can make a space feel cold. You may even want to employ the services of a professional stager to rearrange your existing furniture, or also provide rental furniture, to make your spaces more buyer friendly. The living space on the opposite page has been professionally staged. You can see that the rugs define the space making the most of two areas and giving them a good flow. The family room furniture is brought closer, the coffee table is the center of the conversation area, and the rug in the middle brings everything in the room together. The dining room is placed at an angle to give it more interest and defined with a rug to keep everything from looking too much the same. You can hire a professional stager for a consultation for $100 to $150 per hour. The stager will walk through your home, advise you on the changes you need to make, and will leave the actual staging up to you. For full-service staging, professionals may have

e thank the members of the Cassina Garden Club for the photos of their gardens and favorite plants and flowers for our Home & Garden feature. Their pictures lend touches of color and beauty to our pages in the same way the club itself has been beautifying the Golden Isles for nearly a century. Founded in 1928, Cassina Garden Club is the oldest garden club in Glynn County, and is still going strong with a current membership of more than 130 women (and those two men!). In 1932 the Glynn County Commissioners granted the club stewardship of the circa 1800s
tabby slave Cabins at Gascoigne Bluff that were once a part of Hamilton Plantation. They were later deeded that property in 1950. Through Cassina efforts, the slave cabins, which represent an important part of this island’s past and the legacy of its people, were placed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1988. The club recently concluded a fundraising campaign that allowed them to complete the historically correct restoration of the cabins to their original structures. Over the years, Cassina has sponsored many projects including establishing the St. Simons Island Public Library, leading efforts to designate St. Simons Island as a Bird Sanctuary, creating and assist-
ing with the Fort Frederica Herb Garden, as well as establishing and maintaining the Pink Garden at Hospice of the Golden Isles. Their green thumbprints are all over this island and Glynn County! On Saturday, April 27, don your garden hat and some walking shoes to join Cassina Garden Club members at their 13th Annual Tabby and Tillandsia Garden Walk. Ladies, start planning your attire now. Whether to match the hat to the dress or the dress to the hat? Should it adorn a fancy updo or simply top a sleek ponytail? From snazzy spectators to fabulous fascinators, you’ll want your chapeau to shine! The Derby Day hat parade is no joke, and there are some fierce competitors just waiting to show their stuff! And, gents, don’t think you’re exempt. Get spiffy in your seersucker or sport some equestrian inspired flair. Part of what makes this evening fun is seeing how traditional Derby Day fashion is brought to life in the Golden Isles. Come hungry, because you’ll be treated to a wide array of delicious Southern fare prepared by the Sea Island chefs ranging from sliders to a shrimp and grits bar to decadent desserts. The mint juleps will be flowing, and there’s a well-stocked xbar with the requisite fine bourbon called for by the occasion as well as many other choices to slake your thirst. Drop by the betting window and choose the horse and jockey you think will be strutting their silks in the winner’s circle. While the pièce de résistance is the simulcast of

Beloved local party band Mason Waters and the Groove Allstars will set the tone when you arrive and will get you on the dance floor after the race and auction are concluded. When the last strains of the music fade away, you’ll be left wondering where the time went and won’t want the night to end. Take your time to walk around and see all of the silent auction offerings. There are always wonderful creations from students and class projects, as well as art, jewelry, and so many other treasures. There really is something for everyone – from sports fans to music and movie buffs to food and wine connoisseurs – and ample opportunities to bid. Also, don’t miss your chance to win a Yamaha Golf Cart from XL Carts by purchasing your raffle tickets (1 for $50 or 5 for $200). Following the race, the exciting live auction takes place. Past year’s auction items have included amazing vacation packages, concert experiences, and even furry companions! The bidding is lively and everyone always has a fun time,
whether or not they walk away with their coveted items. The real winners here are the students of Frederica Academy, because funding from Derby Day proceeds is critical to the success of the school and its ability to provide an outstanding college-preparatory education to its students. Tickets for Derby Day are $125 per person and include all food and beverages. The generous support you provide by becoming a Derby Day sponsor, attending the event, purchasing raffle tickets, and bidding on a wide array of silent and live auction items helps the school to continue serving students as the premier independent school between Jacksonville and Savannah. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit fredericaacademy.org/ support-fa/derby-day, or contact Brad Hutcherson at bradhutcherson@fredericaacademy. org. Not only is this an excellent opportunity for our community to support Frederica Academy while having fun with friends, it’s a wonderful way for new residents and families to be introduced to Frederica Academy and our local community.

The City Manager’s Case for Taxes
D
uring the month of April, our thoughts inevitably turn to taxes. In 1943, Fernando J. Torras, City Manager of Brunswick, issued a leaflet, now preserved in the Coastal Georgia Historical Society archives, which outlined how city tax dollars benefitted local residents. On a house and lot assessed at $2,000, he indicated that annual police and fire protection accounted for $8.02 of the $42.00 tax bill. The fee for operation of the hospital, medical clinics, city parks, and cemeteries was $2.34. The garbage collection fee was $4.62, while school taxes made up the largest portion at $14.00. Those living on their properties were, however, exempt from the school tax. In view of the many services provided by the city, Torras concluded that “your tax dollar is your best investment.” A native of Brunswick, Torras served as City Manager for over 18 years. He was best known locally as chief engineer of the causeway between the mainland and St. Simons Island, which opened in 1924 and now bears his name. A graduate of Georgia Tech, Torras spent the early years of his career in South America, where he built railroads, bridges, and roads before returning to Coastal Georgia. During World War II, in addition to being City Manager, he was resident engineer for the U.S. Maritime Commission at the J.A. Jones Construction Company shipyard in Brunswick, where Liberty ships were built. This month’s image of the 1943 leaflet is accompanied by a photograph of Fernando Torras, also in the Historical Society archives.
