Mother and daughter entrepreneurs, Rita Boland and Auret Cavedo started Island Drapes & Upholstery LLC as a homebased business in a small studio seven years ago. Rita says, “Business has been so phenomenal that in June 2018 we vacated our rented premises and purchased the old veterinary hospital on Demere Road, remodeled it to suit our needs, and relocated. The move has been a huge success with a tremendous increase in foot traffic.”

Creating beautiful spaces is the duo’s passion. This requires extensive knowledge of fabrics, styles and keeping up to date with the latest trends and colors. They do everything to create the feel and aesthetic their clients and designers seek. Auret says of their clients, “Early on, just starting out, we were able to establish a very good relationship with most local designers and architects on the island. Through word of mouth and great referrals from our local designers, we began working with designers from Atlanta, as well as several from New York, who we still serve today.” Rita adds, “Designers commission custom work for almost every project they work on, and we are here to make their visions come to life.” Custom craftsmanship is a true commitment, as a significant amount of time is spent in the actual planning, sourcing of products, pattern drawing, cutting, finding and matching fabrics. Difficult windows and spaces need to be laser measured and calculated for possible installation problems etc. Auret says popular consumer culture’s desire for “cheap” sometimes makes it difficult for them to justify the cost of their services. “However,” she says, “compare a store bought drapery panel to our custom panel, and we need not say another word.” Rita and Auret take pride in their reputation for exceptional quality, a constant awareness of fashion trends and devotion to unsurpassed service.
