Buyer Beware!!!!

A Message from Owner Zoe Herrington:

It has been my experience for over four decades when many people travel on cruises, they are lead to believe that they are able to make a jewelry purchase for far less than they would pay in the United States. The cruise lines will put a group of people looking to buy jewelry in a classroom environment, steering this group to “stores” sanctioned by the cruise line. What the buyers are not aware of is that the cruise line gets a kick back on what you purchase. One story that comes to mind was a feisty long-term customer that wanted a natural Alexanderite and all of the stones I have are authenticated by GIA with a certificate. While my prices are super competitive, she felt she would wait because she was going on an Alaskan Cruise. Here she comes after her cruise and was so excited to show me her “Alexanderite” and wanted my opinion. After looking at her “treasure” my response was “congratulations, you have two stones that are fractured.” After showing her the stones, which were set in a ring under a magnifier, she was devastated. We had to move in a hurry to get her credit card company involved as well as the cruise lines. She was treated so dastardly by the cruise line, they refused to take responsibility, even though they had referred this “reputable store.” After hours of making calls on her behalf, I was able to get her full restitution. Please understand when you purchase items out of this country, unless you have an advocate that is in the know, you are on your own. If you have purchased a piece of jewelry in the recent past, get a second opinion and use a certified lab to help you authenticate your jewelry and get a third party involved!

Dear Santa,

Nothing brings on the holidays like Christmas songs. When it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and you hear that Santa Claus is comin’ to town on the radio, the Yuletide season is officially upon us. I like to find the station that plays 24 hours of Christmas music and for four solid weeks I get immersed in the holiday spirt! While singing along in my car to “White Christmas” by Bing Crosby; or “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” by Andy Williams, and “A Holly Jolly Christmas” by Burl Ives, I can’t help but get excited about the season!

As a kid, it seemed like the weeks leading up to Christmas Day dragged out. A day in early December felt like three days and a week felt like a month.

By the time The Grinch Who Stole Christmas finally came on TV, you knew you were starting to gain speed towards the 25th. And when school FINALLY got out for Christmas break, it was time to get serious about letting Santa know exactly what you wanted under the tree.

Not everyone is lucky enough to be best friends with Santa, so understandably some question his existence. According to research, kids stop believing in Santa at age 8.4 years.

Still, every Christmas, millions of kids around the world write letters to Santa. While I was somewhat skeptical at age 8, due to my 10-year-old big sister, I didn’t want to take a chance. In my letter to the big guy I waxed eloquent about how good I had been that year and why I was definitely deserving of a new 1970 Schwinn 5-speed Stingray bike. And luckily, Ol’ St. Nick came through!

Now that we’re adults, we understand the true essence and spirit of Christmas. But let’s be honest, when we were kids, we were excited about the coming of the holiday because of the gifts we’d receive and the two weeks of no school! No matter how you remember your Christmases as a child, we at EIL wish you and your loved ones a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Everywhere you turn, there are treats to be enjoyed, but nothing makes us smile more than whimsical gingerbread men (women too!) and colorfully decorated gingerbread houses.

The origins of gingerbread cookies and houses may go back further than you realize. While some food historians say the first known recipe for gingerbread dates from around 2400 BC in Greece, others trace its origins to 992 AD when Christian bakers in France were taught to make it by Armenian monk Gregory of Nicopolis. Ginger was used in food even before that, first cultivated in China approximately 5,000 years ago, and was thought to have magical and medicinal properties.

Over the centuries that followed, science has proven they were right. Ginger has many health benefits. It has anti-inflammatory properties that can help your brain. For example, ginger increases serotonin and dopamine levels, which can help with anxiety,

depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Reducing inflammation may also fight dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Ginger is also well known for its ability to ease stomach pains, treat nausea and motion sickness. Ginger has been proven helpful in fighting infection and reducing LDL cholesterol levels. Although our early predecessors may not have been aware of these specific benefits, they did make ample use of ginger for its medicinal purposes and its properties as a natural preservative.

The term “gingerbread” to describe what would later become the hard cookies we know today is a bit misleading, because although today we’re familiar with gingerbread loaves, it was never a bread. The word “gingerbread” was derived from an Old French term for gingered food and morphed into Middle English “gyngebreed,” which then became “gingerbread.” Mostly made by monks to feed to the hungry and use for religious instruction, flat cakes or cookies were formed from a paste of breadcrumbs, honey, and ginger that was rolled out thin and either pressed into molds or baked in sheets and later cut. Children were given gingerbread slabs with letters inscribed on them to help them learn the alphabet.

They were allowed to eat the tablets once they successfully completed the lesson. More elaborate gingerbread, often iced and decorated with gold leaf, and depicting people was used by heads of state for self-promotion and handed out like coins; it also became common in royal courts. Less lavish forms of gingerbread, often shaped like animals, hearts, and other symbols were a staple at Medieval fairs for commoners, and unmarried woman ate manshaped figures called “husbands” to help attract and ensure they’d find a real husband.

While the timeline here is a bit fuzzy, it was Queen Elizabeth I who gets the credit for introducing the first true “gingerbread men.” when she had her pastry bakers create gingerbread biscuits cut to resemble her suitors and other dignitaries who visited her court, decorating them with edible features and outfits. She then served them to guests, who were amused to eat their own likenesses, or perhaps she ate them out of spite. These cookies gifted by the queen were much coveted and her audacious act was emulated and popularized. Even Shakespeare recognized the appeal of gingerbread, having penned these lines i n “Love’s Labor Lost” around the mid-1590s for a performance in Queen Elizabeth’s court: “And I had but one penny in the world, thou should’st have it to buy gingerbread.”

In Nuremberg, Germany (known as the Gingerbread Capital of the World), the practice of making gingerbread was so lucrative

that gingerbread bakers formed a guild that employed master bakers and skilled workers to monopolize the production of this special treat, prohibiting other bakers (even in private homes) from making gingerbread, with exceptions or Easter! Gingerbread men even earned a place on the first Christmas trees, which coincidentally were introduced in England thanks to another queen. It was Queen Victoria who brought into the mainstream the tradition of the evergreen hung with sweets and ornaments from her husband’s homeland in Germany.

The Gingerbread Man tale about a cookie man who runs away from a cow, a horse, and a chicken but gets eaten by a fox, has delighted children (despite its slightly grisly tone) at Christmas since it was first published in St. Nicholas Magazine in 1875. The Gingerbread Man remains a common subject for American children’s

literature into the 21st century. The retellings often omit the original ending: “I am quarter gone... I am half gone... I am three-quarters gone... I am all gone!” and make other changes. In some variations, the fox deafness, drawing the Man closer and the fox snatches devours him. In other the Gingerbread in his flight riverbank, and after the fox’s offer to across, is convinced move ever-forward fox’s mouth. The Gingerbread Man’s taunt to pursuers: “Run, run fast as you can! You can’t catch me. I’m the Gingerbread Man!” is wellknown by children today. course, in our current generations, this may be attributed to the character of Gingy in DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek movies. One of Shrek’s best buddies, this feisty gingerbread man who was baked by the Muffin Man endured torture at Lord Farquaad’s

hands and has a healthy (and not unreasonable!) fear of Santa and his appetite.

There’s another gingerbread connection that began with some fairy tale characters and evolved into tradition and popular culture. We have Hansel and Gretel from the story published in 1812 by the Brothers Grimm to thank for the tradition of making houses out of gingerbread slabs and decorating them with icing and candy. The original fairy tale includes the line: “When they came nearer, they saw that the house was built of bread, and roofed with cakes, and the window was of transparent sugar.” Inspired by the story, German bakers began to craft small, decorated houses from the spiced honey biscuits they called lebkuchen. Today, most of us have childhood

memories of playing Candy Land and racing our little cookie men to the gingerbread castle. In the stores during the holiday season, you can find simple to elaborate gingerbread house kits from the big-name cookie and candy makers using their products and others inspired by games, movies, and cartoons, like the Super Mario Bros. castle.

Our fascination with gingerbread houses, castles, and other structures has led to some amazing creations. The Guinness Book of World Records recognized the largest gingerbread house as a house built with an edible exterior (mounted over a wooden frame) by the Traditions Golf Club near Texas A&M University in 2013 to help raise money for a trauma center at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Their recipe was

simple: mix 1,800 pounds of butter 2,925 pounds of brown sugar, 7,200 eggs, 7,200 pounds all-purpose flour, 1,080 ounces ground ginger and a few other ingredients, bake and form into panels for mounting. The bakers tried to cut back on the butter and baking soda as much as possible to help the gingerbread better stand up to the weather, but calorie count is still estimated to be about 36,000 million! The edible and aromatic panels, icing and candy were mounted over the wooden frame and stood up to the Texas sun as well as a few storms. “One problem we did not anticipate was bees on warm days,” Traditions Golf Club General Manager Bill Horton said. “They have been coming over, getting so much sugar and stumbling around like they are drunk. But no one has gotten stung.”

Locally, Sea Island Resort has been known for the massive

gingerbread creations they create and display at The Cloister during the Christmas holidays. With different themes and replicas of island icons, the work of their confectioners has been remarkable. On Jekyll Island at the Holiday Inn Resort, there is currently a life-sized gingerbread house in the lobby and visitors are invited to come take a look and enjoy complimentary gingerbread cookies. Up in Darien, at Oaks on the River, you can check out a display of smaller, but festively creative, gingerbread

houses made by students from local schools in the lobby. While you’re there, cast a vote for your favorite!

Hopefully all of this has inspired you to do a little baking of your own. On the following pages you’ll find recipes for traditional gingerbread cookies and a spicy gingerbread loaf. Both are bake sale favorites! And since fresh ginger has so many health benefits, we threw in a recipe for homemade ginger ale. For some holiday cheer, we added a Christmas twist on the traditional ginger beer mule cocktail and included a nonedible recipe for gingerbread ornaments you can make with the kids and hang on the tree.

Grandma G’s Gingerbread Cookies

This recipe makes about 3 dozen cookies and comes from a long-time reader with this description: “I first made these cookies back in 1969 when my boys had Boy Scout bake sales. The bake sale committee did not want hundreds of chocolate chip cookies and appealed to the mothers to be innovative and make something that would sell. I was at a loss as to what

58 ELE GANT ISLAND LIVING

make, so I took a molasses rolled out cookie dough recipe and used it to make gingerbread boys and girls. I made three dozen of them and way back then, they sold them for $1 each and sold out in minutes. And now, I have been making them for over 50 years!”

INGREDIENTS:

1 c. molasses, dark

1 c. brown sugar

1 c. or 2 sticks margarine*

1 Tbsp. baking soda

4½ to 5 cups flour

½ tsp. salt

½ tsp. ground nutmeg

1 tsp. ground ginger

1 tsp. ground cinnamon

1 tsp. ground cloves

1 egg, well beaten

PREPARATION:

Combine molasses, sugar, shortening and baking soda in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly and boil slowly for 5 minutes. Cool thoroughly. Mix flour, salt ,and spices. Add well beaten egg to the molasses mixture, then the dry ingredients.

Put in refrigerator until chilled. Roll out on a lightly floured surface ¼-inch thick and cut with cookie cutter. Place on either a greased baking pan or use parchment paper. Bake at 350°F for 8-10 minutes.

FOR FROSTING

3 egg whites

2½ c. confectioners’ sugar

1 tsp. lemon juice, or ¼ tsp. cream of tartar

1½ Tbsp. margarine

Flavoring of your choice (Gramdma G uses vanilla, clove, or almond extract.)

Assorted food coloring

Gumdrops, cinnamon dots, sprinkles and other candies

Quality sandwich bags

PREPARATION:

Beat egg whites and 1/3 of the confectioners sugar with mixer about 3-4 minutes. Add 1/3 more sugar and lemon juice or cream of tartar; beat 6-8 minutes longer. Add desired flavoring and enough more sugar to make the frosting hold its shape with clear cut edges. Beat again until smooth and thick. Add 1½ tablespoons of margarine to keep the frosting from becoming drying out or crumbling. Use good quality, heavier-weight, zippered sandwich bags for your colored frosting in or they can burst. Cut a small piece off one corner of bag for frosting to squeeze through so you can use to decorate like a piping bag. Decorate away!

Fresh Ginger Gingerbread

Fresh ginger adds zest to this wonderfully aromatic and moist gingerbread loaf. If you like your gingerbread on the spicier side, round the ground spices liberally. This recipe can easily be doubled.

Gingerbread Salt Dough Ornaments

These gingerbread cookiestyled ornaments aren’t edible, but the salt dough is made from items found in your pantry and they’ll last for many holidays to come.

3/4 c. ground cinnamon ¼ c. ground cloves

1 1/5 2 c. water

15 drops aromatic essential oil (ginger, nutmeg, peppermint)

Combine flour, salt, cinnamon, and cloves in a large bowl. Whisk to eliminate any clumps. Set aside 1/4 cup of the dry ingredients to use for rolling out the dough. Fill glass measuring cup with 2 cups of water. Add essential oils. Gradually pour water into dry ingredients, stirring to combine. Use your hands and knead moisture in as you go.

Once dough is thoroughly mixed, place on a flat surface dusted with reserved flour mixture to roll out. Roll to 1/4” thick and use cookie cutters to cut dough into shapes. Make sure to make a small hole at the top of each “cookie” so you can string twine or ribbon through to be able to hang the ornaments. Place “cookies” on baking sheet and bake in 300°F oven for 1 hour. Remove and cool thoroughly, then decorate using acrylic paint, paint pens, glue, and glitter.

We hope this dose of history, nostalgia, good health and good cheer, helps make Christmas merry and bright for you and yours.

Thanks to a challenge grant from the St. Mary’s Foundation, the event will have twice the impact in working to end domestic violence. The foundation has promised a dollar-for-dollar match up to $50,000, on all proceeds from the event, which benefits GCCC. Four programs administered by GCCC support domestic violence victims and their children: Amity House, an emergency shelter and crisis hotline; Housing Assistance Program, helping survivors move into independent housing; Outreach Client Services, supporting the agency’s non-residential clients; and Community Outreach/ Education, prevention education

Kate Foster, who owns South of Heaven Bar-be-que in Brunswick with her husband Judd, is excited about this year’s addition of a barbecue award to A Taste of Glynn. But participating in the event for the first time is not about competition for them. “We’re just really happy to share what we love to do at one of our favorite places,” Foster said. The venue for the event, The King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort on St. Simons Island, is where she and Judd were married. She added, “A lot of our customers are on the island, so it will be nice to bring a piece of our business over to the island.”

Chef Dave Snyder, owner of Halyard’s Restaurant Group and Hook & Knife Charters, is offering a fishing trip that will culminate with Snyder preparing the catch from the day at Halyard’s restaurant.

Acheery voice from behind you says , “Excuse us! Do you mind if we get in here?” This sudden interruption catches your attention. As you look to your left, two smiling faces are looking back at you. These faces, and the bright red aprons worn just below them, belong to dedicated volunteers with the St. Simons Land Trust. Tonight, they are oyster

runners. You look down and each volunteer is holding the handle of a large basket filled with nearly 100 freshly steamed South Georgia oysters. One of the volunteers continues, “We have a fresh batch to deliver and there are so many more coming!” You quickly move aside, and SPLAT. Roughly 50 pounds of heavenly goodness now sits in front of you on a red and white checkered tablecloth.

You’ve been waiting 365 days for this experience. Since January 2022, you’ve been waiting to be back at the Land Trust’s annual Oyster Roast. Now, once again, it’s you against the bivalve. As steam rises from the pile of oysters, you hold a sharp-edged oyster with one gloved hand and the other holds a shucking knife. You press the blade into the oyster’s hinge, twist the knife, and CRACK.

64 ELE GANT ISLAND LIVING

In a feeling of utter success, that perfectly steamed (or fire-roasted, if you prefer) oyster opens in your hand. Something about opening an oyster feels a bit empowering, regardless of how you do it. (Amazing that a local shorebird, the American Oystercatcher, can do this with its beak!) Without hesitation, the fleshy morsel is dipped into melted butter or cocktail sauce, placed on a cracker, and consumed. One after another, these coastal delights are eaten, and their shells tossed into buckets beneath the table for later use in a living shoreline or other conservation project.

For the oyster lovers out there, this is a scene you are sure to experience at the Land Trust’s 2023 Oyster Roast. Taking place on January 21, 2023, at Gascoigne Bluff Park on St. Simons Island, this annual event is one the Golden Isles community looks forward to every year. And while local oysters are a main attraction, the event is about far more than eating. The Land Trust hosts this annual fundraiser to gather the community in the name of coastal conservation. It brings awareness to the organization’s important work and helps raise money to preserve the natural and scenic character of St. Simons – a cause that anyone who knows and loves the island can get behind.

“The Land Trust’s Oyster Roast is always a top priority for us every year,” says Greer

Brown, the Land Trust’s board chair. “It’s a homegrown event that is the perfect culmination of location, food, music, and people all supporting and celebrating an organization dedicated to preserving the attributes that make St. Simons Island such a special place to both residents and visitors.”

The first SSLT Oyster Roast was held at Village Creek Landing in 2000 (the same year the organization was founded) with 70 guests in attendance – far more than had been expected. The oysters were soon gone and had to be supplemented with hotdogs and other quickly purchased food. As the event grew, so did the size of the venue and amount of food required. When it moved to Fort Frederica, a lovely array of buffet items such as fried chicken and Low Country boil was added. Finally, after reaching ticket sales of more than 600, it relocated permanently to Gascoigne Bluff Park where more than 1,000 tickets are sold every year and nearly 50 local restaurants provide delicious coastal cuisine.

The exciting growth continues with the 2023 Oyster Roast. This year, the Land Trust’s Pennies for Preservation partner Maggie Hughes Events has taken over the planning and execution of the Roast. Maggie, who is also a Land Trust Ambassador, was excited about the opportunity to experience the

Roast in a professional capacity. “The Land Trust and its mission are so important to me and my businesses. We’ve partnered in many ways already, but I am honored to support the organization further by planning its annual fundraiser. This year’s event is going to be unforgettable!”

The Land Trust’s staff is quick to say that they wouldn’t be able to host the event without the help of the nearly 100 other businesses that support the organization. “It absolutely would not be possible without the many restaurants and businesses who give so generously,” says Emily Ellison, the Land Trust’s Executive Director. “These partners provide us with special menu items, with staff time, and with financial support. And if we didn’t have community leaders like Charlie Williams, owner of Crabdaddy’s and Fiddlers at 410 Arnold, and Steve and Sandy Schoettle at Sea Island Forge, steaming and roasting the oysters every year, if we didn’t have Bob Thompson spending the night on the grounds, or Chef Dave Carrier cooking hundreds of pounds of Low Country boil, if we didn’t have a happy band of dedicated, hard-working volunteers, there is no way we could pull off such an event.”

In fact, that corps of volunteers, who do far more than run oysters from the steamer to the table, has tripled over the last few years. Nearly

66 ELE GANT ISLAND LIVING

150 people begin helping months before the event and lead efforts to set up the day of the Oyster Roast, serve food and drinks, and break down afterwards. On January 21, they will be there once again in their red volunteer aprons. And with the growing number of guests and food booths at the event, their help will be needed more than ever.

In addition to oysters and Low Country boil from Certified Burgers & Beverage, there will be barbeque, soups and chowders, salads, fried chicken, mac-and-cheese, and desserts. In 2022, the Land Trust Oyster Roast had nearly 20 restaurant booths that included food such

as crab cakes from Barbara Jean’s, smoked sausage chili and foie gras crostini from ECHO, caramelized sweet potatoes from Ember, the famous Bananas Foster from Halyard Restaurant Group, and other specialty items from the chefs at Nazzaro’s, Striplings General Store, Sea Island, Sea Salt, Chile Peppers, The Westin, and more.

While the food is certainly a good reason to attend, the live music will keep you there! We always suggest you wear comfortable shoes and be ready for your toes to be tapping to some familiar tunes. Award-winning singer/ songwriter Dallas Davidson and his band

will once again fill Gascoigne Bluff the sweet sounds of many of the Nashville hits that he helped send up the charts. It’s quite a treat!

So, after you’ve eaten your fill of oysters, made rounds through the many different restaurant booths, purchased a raffle ticket or two, and boot-scoot boogied to a few country songs, what next? We hope you leave the event with a desire to invest in land preservation on St. Simons by becoming an annual member of the Land Trust, receiving training to volunteer or become a docent at Cannon’s Point Preserve, or get plugged in to the organization’s ambassador groups.

For those of you who are already a part of the Land Trust’s family of supporters, we genuinely thank you. Your generosity means more than you’ll ever know and is making real impact on St. Simons Island. Now, let’s get ready to have some FUN.

Tickets for the 2023 St. Simons Land Trust Oyster Roast on Saturday, January 21, 2023 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Gascoigne Bluff Park are $95. Current Land Trust members receive a special discounted rate of $75. Call 912.638.9109

“Luxury is in the eyes of the beholder.”

A native of the Golden Isles, Cindy finds inspiration nurturing her garden with her husband Russell or on a long hike. As a former educator, college professor, and human resources executive, Cindy understands the significance of taking care of the details for her real estate clients, anticipating their needs, and freeing them up to make important decisions in finding their dream homes. As the current owner of The Dodge, the former home of writers Eugenia Price and Joyce Blackburn, Cindy appreciates the details of fine craftsmanship and enduring design. She credits growing up as a second generation builder’s kid with giving her the ability to visualize potential and see the hidden gem in every property.

“Luxury is enjoying life to the fullest.”

Joe understands and appreciates the romantic power of storytelling whether it relates to the seasonality of living in the Golden Isles or a poem written by Sidney Lanier waxing lyrical about the Marshes of Glynn. As a selfproclaimed number cruncher, Joe knows that numbers tell a story, a story that helps him interpret the market, see current trends and be able to predict the future for his clients and their investments. His conviction that the Georgia coast is the best of all places to live is infectious. Joe enjoys listening

New Faces at Seaside

Seaside Veterinary Hospital is thrilled to be introducing some new faces on their team. In a world where DVM’s can throw a dart at a map and find a job, Lead DVM, Dr. Wes Blount and Hospital Manager, Brandi Morrow have worked diligently with veterinary universities since 2019. They recognized that making a name for Seaside as the place to get hands-on learning and mentorship would be the way to recruit the best talent. Students at the top of their class get first pick on internships and externships. With student’s word of mouth spreading about a great experience, Seaside teaches as many as twelve veterinary students a year. They say “yes” to pets, provide quality medicine and love to teach with dedicated mentorship. Seaside is better for the students they bring to our

island, and so are your pets. Dr. Blount and Brandi are selective when choosing new doctors to bring on board, and they found the right fit in doctors Matison Hanish and Cullen Kurgan.

Dr. Mati Hanish grew up in Prior Lake, Minnesota. She pursued her Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science at The University of Minnesota. She then moved to St. Kitts where she attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Hanish has a passion for integrative medicine, general practice, and surgery. She and her husband Alejandro have 2 dogs (Vidia and Ringo) and 5 cats (Violet, Mooncake, Reina, Poe, and Sagwa). In her free time, Dr. Hanish enjoys kiteboarding and freediving as well as relaxing with her animals. She came to Seaside on an internship and fell in love with

the island beaches, community, and their pets, of course! Dr. Hanish felt like one of the Seaside team from week one.

Dr. Cullen Kurgan was born and raised in Indiana He received his bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences from Purdue University. He is an avid fisherman. Dr. Kurgan fished on Purdue’s Bass team while earning his degree there. He went on to attend Veterinary School at St. George’s University and University of Florida. On his days off you can find him at the beach fishing for sharks or pompano. Dr. Kurgan did an internship with Dr. Weldon, who performs ultrasounds and ECHOs once a month at Seaside. He said that after visiting over 20 hospitals, he felt the most at home on St Simons Island.

Schedule your pet’s next visit and stop in to meet these important

new members of the Seaside team. Seaside Veterinary Hospital is located at 175 Skylane Road.

For more information about their veterinarians and services or to make an appointment, visit seasidevets.com. They hope that they continue to be your best friend’s best friend!

Merry Christmas from Our Family to Yours

In this issue of Elegant Island Living, the Davis Love Foundation (DLF) continues a series of highlights focused on The RSM Classic and its impact on our community.

As we reflect on Thanksgiving and prepare for the Christmas season, it’s the perfect time to look back with wonder and appreciation of the many blessings in our lives. Faith. Family. Friends. Community.

We are so grateful to live and work in the Golden Isles. This place is filled with the best of Southern hospitality, amazing generosity where neighbors look after neighbors and visitors are embraced with open arms.

We saw this demonstrated time and time again during The RSM Classic last month. Everyone who made the trip to our special island received the warmest welcome and was treated to an experience where memories were made that will last a lifetime.

This would not have been possible without the dedication and loyalty of more than 1,200 volunteers, many of whom live in the Golden Isles. We believe we have the very best volunteers on the PGA TOUR.

On behalf of the Davis Love Foundation and all the children and families impacted by the $30+ million dollars raised and donated from The RSM Classic, we thank you for your

Recently the Golden Isles chapter of Jack and Jill of America made history as one of the newest chapters in the national organization that was founded in 1938. The chartering milestone celebrated a year of working and living to impact the lives of children in local counties. Shontae Buffington, president of the newly chartered chapter, and Kaia Alderson, chapter vice president, desired to provide an opportunity for their children to engage with other mothers and children via strategic programming. The Golden Isles Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated consists of mother members who reside in Camden, Glynn, and McIntosh Counties and uniquely and strategically strengthens children to be the next generation of leaders through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving, and civic duty. David, a small boutique offering a thoughtfully curated selection of men’s and women’s clothing, jewelry and handbags is now open in Redfern Village (next to Edward on Saint Simons). “Because the space is small, we have to carefully select what we choose to sell.” said owner David DeVivo. Most of the jewelry is handmade, and sourced from New York, Savannah, Florida and locally. The majority of the apparel is made in the United States, Italy, Portugal and Canada. “We’re buying most of our merchandise from small batch American and European sources, so you are not likely to find it anywhere else. In fact, we have exclusive rights to sell many of our items in this area.” David said. Handmade Italian leather

MIXED NUTS OPENS SECOND LOCATION

For several years, many of Mixed Nuts Boutique & Consignment’s customers and consignors have been suggesting they need a larger store. They are thrilled to announce the opening of their second location in the Village: Mixed Nuts South. Located at 548 Ocean Blvd. (directly across from Porch), the shop is about two thirds the size of their “North” location, which will remain their flagship store. The computers are synced together, so you can consign, drop off, and shop at either location. Drop in to see the new digs and get ready to celebrate Mixed Nuts’ 10th anniversary with them next year! Cottage 485, E. Thirty First Street Sea Island

Ocean front: Sea Island. The beach and golf brought this family here, but Sea Island became so much more. The personal palettes that went into the creation of Cottage 485 include family, love, books, art, conversation, communication, the environment, fun, education and history. In a word, this cottage is welcoming. You'll notice this when you step into the foyer. Atlantic Ocean vistas catch the eye through the beamed, high ceiling Living room. The Great room has coffered beamed ceilings and leads out to an oceanside screened porch. The ground level Master bedroom has two full baths plus a den/office. The second floor has five bedrooms, all en-suite,

ocean front porch plus family room and balcony. An additional laundry room is on this level. Architect John Shackleford's touches are on display throughout the home with brilliant uses of heart pine, stone, high ceilings and wall designs. Now it's your opportunity!

Cottage 342, W. Seventeenth Street, Sea Island

Occupying most of the 17th Street block, this prized and revered property extends from Sea Island Drive all the way to the marsh. For families who enjoy staying together and being close to one another, Lune de Miel (Cottage 342) is lovingly placed on the land with the precision of an artist, an apt metaphor given the materials, furnishings and appointments dating from the 17th century. The enchanting grounds contain a moated gazebo with Louis XIII French limestone mantel (circa 1672), alfresco grill, pergola, 3 pools, bath house with laundry room, basketball court, chess court, Dovecote (circa 16th-17th century), circular fire pit, putting green, chipping tee box, Bocce Ball court, shuffleboard and long northwesterly marsh vistas. Twelve bedrooms (9 with fireplaces), each with their own personality, 17 fireplaces, an Irish pub with 17th century Roman carved black slate fireplace. The English Victorian pine front bar has the original mahogany counter top (circa 1849) from a tavern in Birmingham, England. The back bar is from Fritzingers Hotel in Coopersburg, PA (circa 1883). Walk-in cooler. The Game Room/Parlor has an 1886 Brunswick “Jewel” pool table and a Rock-ola maple and hardwood shuffleboard table. Adding to the authenticity of the home’s appointments, a 19th century bronze and ormolu French chandelier adorns the brick lined Wine Cellar. A solid European red oak and hand forged iron door (circa 1850) leads to the Theatre with rare Italian barrel-vaulted ceiling (circa 17th century). The family room limestone fireplace (circa 1600-1750) is from the Chateau Fountain in Sologne, France and belonged to the family of the wife of former French President Jacques Chirac. Indeed, this is a grand residence yet with a warm, comfortable loving ambience. Lune de Miel is the sequel of a couple’s spark of beautiful love where lasting memories were made. $19,500,000

Wartime Christmas Cheer at Naval Air Station St. Simons

As Christmas approaches, we usually think in terms of planning festivities for a small circle of our family and friends. But at Naval Air Station (NAS) St. Simons during World War II, it was a different story. The base was responsible for entertaining up to 1,700 enlisted personnel, officers, and civilian employees, many away from their loved ones for the holiday.

In December 1943, the base newspaper Tally-Ho announced numerous Christmas events. These included caroling, religious services, dinner in the mess hall, and dancing at the King and Prince Hotel, which the Navy had transformed into an advanced radar training facility and Bachelor Officer Quarters. Since some of the families of base personnel had moved to St. Simons Island, a party with Santa was held for the children. As the paper noted, “You may be away from home, but it is your fault if you don’t catch some of the Good Cheer that comes with Christmas.”

The following year, according to a December 1944 Tally-Ho article, the problem of getting a Christmas turkey and the traditional accompaniments during wartime rationing was solved for enlisted men stationed at the base. The Navy invited wives and children to join them at a Christmas dinner of turkey and all the trimmings. The dinner brought to a close the Yuletide celebrations, which included a children’s party where Santa handed out hard candy, apples, and oranges and a dance in the “gaily decorated” recreation hall. Everyone could only hope they had celebrated the last Christmas of the war.

The images for this month include the 1943 Christmas dinner menu for NAS St. Simons and a picture of Navy photographer Jack Daniel Lane with his family at Christmas, 1944. As official photographer of NAS St. Simons, Lane created a visual record of activities and personnel at the station. A collection of these images is preserved at the Coastal Georgia Historical Society. After the war, Dan Lane returned to his family’s business, Lane Brothers Commercial Photography, in Atlanta and worked there until his retirement in 1975.

Coastal Georgia Historical Society presents this article and images from our archives as part of our mission “to connect people to Coastal Georgia’s dynamic history.” The Society operates the iconic St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and the World War II Home Front Museum, housed in the Historic Coast Guard Station at East Beach.
