Building Information

current Oregon Humane Society (OHS) located on Columbia Blvd. was incorporated in 1880. During the years 1881 to 1933 OHS served as Oregon’s child and animal protection organization, by arresting and convicting animal and child abusers. By 1916, OHS took over the city pound, and two years later purchased a four acre farm in Northeast Portland to serve as the Society’s headquarters until 1999. In 1972 OHS terminated the city contract due to arguments over responsibility, and contrary goals of the humane verses the pound aspects of its work. Since then, OHS has been a stand-alone non-profit organization, operating a single facility without the assistance of government funding or of a restricting municipal contract. Today, OHS is a private animal welfareorganization which emphasizes responsibility and compassion for all animals through education, legislation and leadership. OHS exists solely on private donations and revenues from services to care for and find homes for homeless animals, investigate and stop the abuse of animals, and educate the community on the humane treatment of all animals.

My character concept for this project is based on the community coming together. At the current OHS facility the sense of community and transition from one place to another isn’t apparent. However, for the satellite facility I will achieve the sense of community between each area of Happy Tails Haven OHS, SPCA. The veterinary, SPCA, and Adoption services will work together instead of being secluded from one another. My inspiration to achieve this sense of community is the use of the City Grid concept. The city is a closeknit community that always joins together at intersections. For the new facility the layout will be similar to a city grid with dog and cat condos incorporated. The main entrance will be the primary intersection of all service areas.

Creating a place that specializes in adoption, vet care, animal cruelty/rescue, and education about the welfare of animals. The focus areas are: ASPCA: The ASPCA or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals focuses on cruelty/neglect and rescuing of animals. They help educate the public about the welfare of animals. Their purpose is to serve the animals and the public, and they work hand-in-hand with the county police and judicial departments to get the job done. They are a private and exclusive precinct. 24. Hr. Vet: Help provide 24 hr. services for both the shelter and the general public. They have the up-todate equipment and expertise. Helps with financial burdens, provides payment plans.

Adoption: Focuses on adoption days and provides more space for animals coming from other shelters and the main OHS. Most animals are not behind bars but instead are in a homelike environment (benefits the adoption center to get more animals out to new homes and people coming can see how animals could fit in their home).

Whistlers Peak

UPLOAD: Whistler, Canada

This resort is to be designed as a year-round vacation destination that will be a recreational/back to nature vacationing at its best. The Developer’s vision for this resort is that it will be designed with sustainability in mind. Nature and the preservation of the surrounding environment it the utmost important objective to the community. Therefore the entire design will reflect a global attitude towards life and all of its aspects throughout all stages of the design. This six-story resort, featuring 40+ rooms will help co-host the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and Paralympics Games. For this project the focus areas of design will be on the first two floors.

Users The users for this space vary between three categories and subcategories which are employees, visitors and guests. Between these three types of users the needs and wants vary according to the duration of time that each user spends at the resort. The short tem users will be mostly guests who come from distant places to enjoy a vacation period and stay at the resort, while employees and visitors are mostly from the local area (long-term/ short-term users) who use the public amenities only that the resort provides (restaurants, spa, café, retail etc.). Under the guests and visitors the sub-categories are families, couples, and singles. Since each of these types is distinctly different the needs and wants also vary.

The problems that I have come across while analyzing the site and the users involve both the entire space as well as the space’s overall purpose. The first problem that came up first was how to orient each space to fit according to their required adjacencies. Also this resort is suppose to accommodate many different types of users such as guests that are families, couples and singles as well as visitors of the same types and employees. Since all of these different types of users require different needs it was challenging to try to accommodate all of them. One of the most challenging problems yet is to figure out how to make this building sustainable inside and out.

This was a group studio project. With groups of threes all students had to create a collaborative scenerio where the current Portland Art Institute building needed expansion for more impending degree majors. Each student had the task of implementing their design ideas into a uniform and harmonious finished product.

Idea Piazza: An interconnected network of circulation, wall connections, vertical space connections, and overall viewing throughout the space combine to create a unifying idea. For the context of this project, this is the definition of a piazza which characterizes our concept. A piazza is where ideas come together; people meet, paths cross, and connections are made. Distinctly different elements interact to create a new experience. The center of a piazza becomes very important because it is the core of a change or a community interaction. It is simplistic yet complex. A design community is made up of diversity. It is essential that these strong differences converge to allow for mingling of minds, ideas, and artistic talents. The result is a unifying body of students with shared yet distinct goals. In our design, the concept of piazza not only defines the space architecturally, but also creates an environment that initiates and supports interaction between its users.

George and Laura are a middle aged couple from the east coast looking for a new start in Portland. George is leaving a high profile, high stress job to be the Portland director of the Sierra Club. Laura is a school teacher and will continue to teach in the Portland area. George is a fan of the outdoors and would like to see some notion of it in the design of their new home. Since they do not have many friends here, they plan on doing a lot of entertaining.

Concept

Concept My concept for this model and project is the fusion of precise geometry and organic fundamentals. For the organic portion of my concept, I wanted to keep the forms and objects realistic to their organic nature. This means to keep the forms and objects grounded and letting gravity to be apparent. As for the organic shapes themselves, each is unique and asymmetric while taking different original forms such as waves, whirls and bubbles.

Sections

UPLOAD: Pearl District, Portland,Oregon

For the geometric portion of my concept, I wanted other forms and objects to be more imaginative to the mind. For most of the geometric shapes they are contemporary in form and can be either symmetrical or asymmetrical in appearance. The geometric shapes are generally smooth, sharp and square, and without any roundness to them.

Renderings

I took this class in my last year of undergratuate school. The reason for this class unit was to be able to handdraw and handrender by scratch. Since the majority of my Interior Design major was digital based, it was necessary to learn basic rendering and drawing skills, just in case it was needed in the field. It was a great way to wrap-up my four year journey at The Art Institute of Portland.
