Be a Great Sea
Gichi-Gami • Lake Superior

ElementJ Studio Hello! My name is Joe Beedlow, and I design pattern collections under the name of ElementJ Studio. I started my career in 1989 at the age of 3, as a clandestine doodler of walls—with magic marker. I then devoted myself to all things tech and computer related. Soon after, I uncovered a passion for color, and began doodling on paper with crayons and markers (much to the delight of my parents). Then my father introduced me to photography. With the advent of the digital age, my passion for images, typography and color became focused on digital graphics, layout and photography. In 1998, I finally found the force that held together all my creative passions: the web. Digital Design is the way I keep together all my passions—photography, design, typography, illustration, video, music - and my creative instinct. My aesthetic taste is very eclectic—I love simple, clean modern design, but also have a special soft spot for vintage, steampunk design. In 2011, I became part owner of my Mother’s quilt shop, Orchard’s Edge. I have made samples, designed quilt patterns, and gained a dedicated following of LOLs (Little Old Ladies) who depend on me to help match colors for their quilts. In early 2015, I took Bonnie Christine’s Introduction to Surface Pattern Design, and I was hooked! I have been doodling ideas for new pattern collections like mad. This is my first collection that I have put together, and I know I have room to grow and learn more! I hope you enjoy previewing it.

About this Collection Lake Superior
The Ojibwa people call it Gitchi-Gami, which means “Be A Great Sea. It is the largest surface of fresh water in the world. On the southern shores, and the northern tip of Wisconsin, is a special place, where the waters are home to 22 jewels of islands and 7 lighthouses. At the gateway to the islands is Bayfield, the place I call home. This collection celebrates the picturesque city of Bayfield, the Apostle Islands, the waters of Lake Superior the lighthouse keepers, and commercial fishermen that watched over the area. This collection is presented in 2 color ways: Beach Glass, which shows the blues of sky and water, and Sandstone which shows the tawny hues sand, wood and stone.
