Sofitel is an internationally acclaimed boutique hotel in the heart of the Gold Coast of Chicago. Designed by French architects Jean-Paul Viguier and Pierre Yves Ronchon, this gem has made it’s mark in Chicago as being one of the most elegant modern structures within this decade. It’s construction was coordinated by Teng Associates in association with Perkins+Will- Chicago. Tak Louie, AIA, represented Perkins + Will as the Senior Project Architect in charge of the interpretation and construction of the interior as envisioned by the French designers. Since it’s opening in 2002, Hotel Sofitel remains a symbol of timeless Architectural and Interior design.

It’s original lobby was clad in Indiana limestone and was a symbol of reserved elegance in the early 70’s. However, it was soon lost in the fervor of new Office building construction adorned with opulent modern finishes. 230 W. Monroe needed a face lift to keep up with market demands and competitive leasing options available around it. The design is simple, understated and elegant. A familiar material, wood, eases the transition from the lightness of the structural glass façade to the embrace of warm finishes at the elevator banks. A heightened ceiling plane further opens the space to give a grandeur scale to a once dark and cavern-like entry.

As a proponent of the Green movement in Chicago, the Chicago Park District required a new office that embodied its inherent purpose and the true character of its employees. With natural wood work throughout, live plants and dynamic images of greenscapes throughout, the floor plan is truly a figurative extension of the outdoors. Each administrative space is carved out of a greater form which is a larger form, in itself. Slat walls add a kinetic element to the workstations and transition areas. The soul of the design can be found not in the physical structure but in the energy that all the employees give to the space each and every day.

The design concept for the North American Company embodies the concept of the “village�. The architecture of this space is organized by neighborhoods, plazas, gardens, primary and secondary thoroughfares. This fluid, non-rectilinear planning model provides opportunity for a more interactive work environment. The major advantage of this concept is its flexibility, both in space utilization and construction.The space can be built out using conventional construction methods, modular components or a combination of both.

Established in 1940 as a WWII training and coastal patrol base, this exceptional site was also used as a front-line USAF base from the 1950s-early 1990s. In 1993, the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Redevelopment Authority, along with developer McCaffery Interests set out to turn the nearly 4,000 acres of prime land located in the glamorous vacation Mecca The Grand Strand, into the Market Common, Myrtle Beach.

The “Dove” tensile provides a canopy which not only protects the courtyard but also creates a bold and daring image for the High School at Monterrey Tech. It features a single mast floating in tensegrity in the middle of the courtyard. The shape is based on cuts of a hyperbolic paraboloid and is meant to symbolize a bird landing at the site.

Dubai International Airport is one of the most profitable shopping destinations in the world. As one of the busiest transfer hubs in the Middle East, Dubai Airport has evolved into one of the most prestigious shopping destinations in the UAE. It’s popularity, with the increase in international travel, has warranted an addition of an annexing terminal. The Terminal designs were led by Dar Al-Handasah (Shair and Partners) in the Middle East. Tak Louie, AIA, was one of two Senior Project Architects to supervise the team of architects and designers coordinating the daunting production documents to build the one million SF airport Terminal. Part of his efforts brought together more than 6 independent consultants from all over the world to make the airport a reality.

On the forefront of technology, Dubai incorporates leading edge technology in LED lighting, structural glass glazing interior and exterior, quartz finishes, point suspended exterior glazing systems, “People Counting Apparatus” at security gateways and check points, and advanced security control systems to insulate travelers from security threats. The Design-Build process allowed all these technologies to be competively “invented” and manufactured throughout the world.

The owner of this luxurious 2-story brick and stone residence, requested special attention be given to the detailing on the interior of the house. All the custom woodwork, soffits, mouldings and built-in furniture were integral with the overall design of the house. All pieces lend to each of its spaces a uniqueness separate from all the other spaces. On the outside, its steep wood-shingled roof line contributes to the understated elegance of the residence.

This single family Ranch style home is set on a 40-acre bucolic country-like pasture. It’s large picturesque windows allow natural light to flood into every inch of the space, and sets the frame for the indoor gazers to enjoy the beautiful vistas surrounding the house. Using durable materials like stone, brick and cement siding was a priority for the client- to resist the extreme wind conditions in this region of the Midwest.
