BATTLE OF BRITAIN Visitor Centre

The Bunker, built in 1939 and today restored to its wartime state, controlled the RAF fighters that won the Battle of Britain. Its new visitor centre is due to open in early 2018. The building will be 2000 m2 in size and set across two levels. The design embraces the central themes of flight and planes with a shell-like form and twisted geometry. The development will consist of main exhibition hall, which will house a variety of exhibits, a cafe and gift shop, an auditorium/lecture hall, plus additional facilities for schools, corporate events and functions. The original design is developed by Studio E architects. Pattern Design was the construction phase architect for the contractor VolkerFitzpatrick.

REFERENCE VIEWS Linked Files Revit Workflow

Working on large project almost always requires having multiple models that are linked together. A well-known drawback of Revit is that views and sheets from different linked files cannot be referenced between separate models. This workflow overcomes the issue using a ‘dummy’ detail item and with the help of Dynamo + Excel. It creates an easier way to ensure all detail numbers are kept up to date and keeps things simple even for users unfamiliar with visual programming. This script allows ‘referencing’ Callout, Section and Elevation views from linked files in a project using ‘dummy’ detail items. Each of the detail items has 3 parameters that allow the ‘linking’: View ID, Reference Detail Number and Reference Sheet Number. The View ID parameter is the one that makes the workflow (almost) automatic and allows keeping the reference numbers up-to-date when running the script. The Reference Detail Number and Reference Sheet Number are populated automatically using the script.

The script will populate a specified Excel workbook with all the views on sheets that are available to be referenced from the linked files. Any links that are not loaded will be skipped. The script will create a separate tab for each linked model and will export/write the View ID, View Name, Detail Number on Sheet and Sheet number. 34

• Callout detail item: Detail item, with 4 pull handles. • Callout detail item tag: Tag, that reads/displays the Reference Detail Number and Reference Sheet Number parameters from the Callout detail item. Create and instance by navigating to Annotate > Tag by Category. • Section detail item: Line based component, with stretching tail. The section can be modified by dragging the segment handles. The section line can also be broken to allow for gaps in segment. Arrow and section head rotation parameters are available. • Elevation component: Detail component with arrow angle instance parameter available.

Using the View Name, find the desired view and copy the View ID. Then paste that into the View ID instance parameter of the pre-loaded family (callout, section or elevation). Run the script again and the Reference Detail Number and Reference Sheet Number parameters will be populated automatically. Running the script will also update any previously created reference families, keeping their Reference Detail and Sheet Numbers up-to-date with the linked files. 35

DRAWING LIST AUTOMATION Revit + Excel + Dynamo

Managing titleblock information and revisions on large packages containing hundreds of drawings can be a very laborious task. Manual input can often leave space for human error. This script reads a drawing list set up in Excel and populates the information accordingly. The only information needed is the correct drawing number to be set up in Revit. In case of a wrong drawing number or missing drawing the script will notify the user and will not run until the sheet numbers in Excel and Revit match perfectly. The script has been set up to be used with Dynamo Player, omitting the need for prior visual programming skills.

Titleblock Information is Updated According to an Excel Drawing List

38

Revit and Excel Drawing Numbers Match = Script Updates Sheets Successfully

Revit and Excel Drawing Numbers Don't Match = Script Notifies User of Missing Drawings

REEF SAFE? Sunscreen Harmful Chemicals Checker

In 2021 Hawaii passed a bill that will prevent the sale of sunscreen containing common UV-filtering ingredients, such as oxybenzone and octinoxate. Why is this important? Because both have been linked to coral bleaching. We know that reefs are suffering at the hands of global climate change due to rising ocean temperatures, as the stress of warm water causes corals to bleach. In addition, scientists now say that chemically based sunscreen can induce the same bleaching response in coral. Studies have shown that oxybenzone and octinoxate are found in over 3,500 sunscreen products. When corals absorb these chemicals, they have a similar reaction as they would if surrounding water temperatures were to get too warm. In addition, the presence of these chemicals in sea water allows viruses to thrive, putting corals at high risk of catching an infection that could lead to bleaching and death. As a vegan and someone who cares deeply about the environment, avoiding chemicals that contribute to coral bleaching was very important but can also get confusing. Reading ingredients labels with long and complex chemical names proved tedious. With the use of a simple visual programming script it can be as simple as copy-paste.
