URBAN RECYCLING. MUTATION OF FORGOTTEN SPACES INTO PUBLIC COLLECTIVE SPACES ETSAB - THESIS - EXAMINING BOARD: PhD Architect E. Roca, C.Pardal, I.Bilbao, F.V谩zquez City: Castell贸n de la Plana (Spain) Population: 180.000 Founding: 1251 Development related to agriculture until the begining of the 20th century when chemical and ceramic industry expanded in the city, decades later these industries went away leaving the former factories abandoned INSIDE the city. But, these buildings were not a problem because in an region so industrialized the unemployment rate was minimum, way lower than Spanish average, and Castell贸n was filled with activities, opportunities and urban scenarios. And the recession came. And the domino effect started. Deserted shopping streets , people increasingly concerned; abandoning any hope of finding a job in the city of Castell贸n they begin to migrate , it is not uncommon for workers with decades of experience in ceramics go to India or China. People leave and those who stay do so in a skeleton city, in which there is no supply , there is not the possibility of distraction, to meet, to relax. So to find these urban settings inhabitants have to leave the city , travel by car to large facilities built in another era , including the Auditorium and the Palau de la Festa surrounded by nothing , unable to move, because of its location, this activity generated to the city; or people have to drive to remote zones with shopping centers and sports facilities where they can interact. Because in the city that possibility is increasingly uncertain.

In response, the project involves the recovery of the heterogeneity of the range of activities and exchange spaces for citizens through the conversion and renovation of abandoned industrial buildings located WITHIN the town of Castellon. During the analysis phase they have be counted more than 100 buildings or derelict sites within the city . The draft conversion and reoccupation of which meet the following criteria arises: - Warehouses abandoned , without any use today were built during the twentieth century - Empty lots where they were industrial buildings were demolished and never built anything A total of 46 points of intervention spread like a crown around the center that replace the city with urban settings needed to define it as such. A NETWORK OF NEW URBAN SCENARIOS.

METABOLISTIC CIRCLES LABORATORY OF CITY CONSTRUCTION. TEGEL INCUBATOR TU BERLIN - MA URBAN DESIGN -Prof.: Raoul Bunschoten - TEAM: Elena Zaera + Simon Becker + Virsavija Fuhrman + Tim Nebert MANIFESTO 21ST CENTURY CITY

MANIFESTO COMMON GROUND

Current lifestyle is based on MOVEMENT.

Individuals are not isolated beings, we are part of a community, we share spaces and infrastructures but also ideas, concepts, dreams.

Along our lives we live in different cities around the world, meeting new people, having different jobs, different homes. This background forms us as individual. Different situations sprawled over the time, but essential to define us. We, men and women of the 21st century are a complex system based on our experiences that nowadays, and thanks to the development in transport and technics, are located in different and distant sites of the world. Our life is a CLOUD. The City is also a complex system result of different experiences. There are not 2 identical persons in the world; because of that, one city has as many variations as inhabitants. Each one of them lives it in a different way, walk through some streets but not through others, and go to some buildings but no others. EACH CITIZEN CREATES A DIFFERENT CITY TO THEMSELVES. Sadly, inherited cities don’t recognize this fact. The freedom to choose the own path exists only due to the people but there are no systems that support and active it. For that, in the city that we propose, all the components, from the smallest scale to the bigger, are designed according to this characteristic of the 21st century citizens. FREEDOM, EQUALITY, ABSOLUTE ACCESS AND FULL CONNECTION are our slogans for a new city.

Citizens are part of a network. A network that involves our common objectives and realities, but also the ones that differ, that makes the network stronger. That network takes place in the city under the name of COMMON GROUND. The common ground for the city that we defend allows different readings, different ways to use it -or not to useAs a network, is formed by several different points sprawled through the city –and maybe also out of it- because we don’t recognize any physical limit in the city, just the limit of our mind. As a network, each one of these points is different and offers a unique perception of the city, but that perception cannot be complete without the rest of the points. As a network, connectivity between the nodes is essential, for that we trust in new transportation systems, fast and energetically efficient; and in the new technics that are being developing.

BUILDING KIT In the city that we propose there are not buildings filled with programmes. In the city that we propose there are systems. SYSTEMS MADE OF SMALL COMPONENTS. The COMPONENTS THAT WE THINK ABOUT ARE THE RESULT OF SPLITTING THE FUNCTIONS OF A USUAL CITY, AND OF A USUAL HOUSE. These components are together in an inherited city, forming a monotonous type of building that responds to only one demand. Our building system is made from all the smallest components, and as we move away from the core of the strategy, we can find bigger different combinations of them. As a result, our buildings are able to provide citizens with the most different functions. Made of tiny programmatic pieces, buildings become a complex and rich entity. A reinterpretation of the CLOUD. A reinterpretation of living in this century.

REMARKABLY USEFUL A) tegel B) elsewhere Our goal is to create a system where the 21st century lifestyle could be experimented in every scale. A system that is representative of its time. But we can’t forget that the civilization has millions of years, and so have the cities that we live in. Thinking that these cities are obsolete and ruined would be unfair and false because, as we are thinking about how to do a city according to our time also were current cities thought for. They are legacy. Our city is systematic and, because of that, we can apply it to already existing structures, to make them actual but without fireworks. Adapting them to the new society and demands. The potential former Tegel Airport area is our test field. THE NEW MOTOR THAT WILL RESTART BERLIN. Beginning there we pretend to expand our vision to the whole city. Not in a direct transformation of the building park, but a deeper change in the meaning of the city. The transformation of Tegel Area into an Incubator of the 21st century City will reactivate the forgotten surroundings of this big infrastructure. And change it to the new hotspot in the European Capital City and, certainly the more representative of the human evolution.

INTERDISCIPLINARY LAB TU BERLIN - PROF.: F. Geipel - TEAM: Elena Zaera + Anna Abelló + Dimitra Megas From the premise that a Cluster of Excellence is a space where different disciplines coexist, we explored how to make them part of the same entity without losing the special features of each one.

the relation between it and the programme. In some cases the programme could appear in the wide stretches but also some programme could be alien to it and hang from it as autonomous cells.

Like a ritual pilgrimage to a sacred temple when different perspectives are seen in every step but never the Temple in its entirety, we adopt the idea of the Promenade as the tool that allows these multiple situations to happen and unify the whole range of spaces that define the Cluster of Excellence, by making possible not only physical connections but also visual connections between the different spaces of the Cluster.

Focusing on the assignment by the Humboldt Universität, we used the information got in interviews to some members of this Cluster and arrange the essential physical and visual connections from them.

Working on the concept of the Path we started from a uniform one with the same width in every point. Second step was rethinking the weight. That way in some stretches it could be narrow to just allow walking but in others could be wide to embrace common spaces as plazas in the city. Besides the width, and putting the attention now on the connections, a unique path didn’t seem as the perfect solution so, more branches of it were added. As a result there is not an only one way to walk through it but many, and walkers can make their own. These different stretches of the path may also have different sensitive characteristics such as light, high of the ceilings or borders. The final steps of this path-development were concerning

The final step of the project was the application of the abstract development into an empty plot in Johannisstraße 4, Mitte, Berlin. We put special attention to the existing surroundings giving to the building the chance to interact with the vicinity and, to it the opportunity in time to improve its conditions, because we think that the Cluster of Excellence of the Humboldt Universität is a powerful programme able to make the difference and we cannot forget its location.

HOUSING POBLE SEC, BARCELONA ETSAB - PROF.: M. Peris - TEAM: Elena Zaera + Marta Ortí Location: 4 different corners in terms of size and shape in Poble Sec. These plots belong to different worlds, border worlds, due to the Passeig de L’Exposició. Two plots in Montjuïc in a tissue-family housing and the others in Poble Sec in a consolidated urban environment. The aim of the proposal is to create a unique project in the different contexts, designing self-sufficient housing cells that are stocked in the urban side, making density, but at the same time are able to sprawl to create a tissue of isoleted housing.

HOUSING COSME TODA ETSAB - PROF.: Marta Peris - TEAM: Elena Zaera + Marta Ortí In the context of the Master Plan L’H10 the exercise proposes to design 400 apartments around an old textile factory called Cosme Toda, that has been a crucial industry in the city of L’Hospitaled de Llobregat, located in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. Nowadays Cosme Toda is empty and abandoned. We understand that if we build AROUND Cosme Toda and just leave it, we are not dealing with it but turning it into a mere decoration in the city. So, we proposed to design the appartments inside the factory. How could you live there? How to adapt it by maintaining its special features? The aim is the integration of the heritage to the contemporary city. Integration that allows its development and functionality in the urban context as a way to prevent the aseptic preservation of the building that would relegate it to an ornament. The design preserves the structure of the original building, perimeter load bearing wall and pillars in the central axis of the plant.

The typology of housing is in the section plan, without interior partitions to avoid the contact between the existing and the adding. The arrangement of the flats is based on closed boxes, the decks and the space left between these elements. Regarding the general intervention in the factory, we propose to open a diagonal in section that would visually communicate the floors of the building. The new vertical communications cores are placed outside.
