CONTRIBUTORS Paige Bowers began her writing career in D.C. on the foreign desk of The Washington Times. After two years of interviewing a global cast of characters that included a Nobel laureate, the first female leader of a Muslim nation and assorted prime ministers, she left the nation’s capital to return to her Southern roots. Now based in Louisiana, Bowers—who wrote the Covet piece on Cartier stationery and luxury pens (page 20), as well as the Acquire section (page 13) for ONE—also contributes to TIME, USA Today, The New York Times, People, Allure, Glamour, SELF, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Atlanta.

New York–based Laurie Werner, who wrote “Graze” (page 26) and “Spotlight: Switzerland’s Art Basel” (page 16) for this issue, has been traveling and eating her way around the world for the last 20 years. The majority of those years were spent as a contributing travel editor for Departures and in her current role as a contributing editor and columnist at Forbes Life (she writes “The Travel Connoisseur” column for Forbes.com). Among Werner’s favorite experiences in the 60-plus countries she has visited: digging for dinosaur fossils with a paleontologist in Central China; ballooning over the stone cliffs of Turkey’s Cappadocia; and enjoying gastronomic adventures in Sicily, Vietnam and the cheese caves of Burgundy. Current New Yorker Rachel Aydt went back to her Santa Fe roots to pen “Desert Calling” (page 36) for ONE Life. Aydt has been working in publishing for 20 years—she has been on staff as an editor and researcher at American Heritage and Cosmopolitan, among other magazines, and now spends most of her days writing about the arts for TIME International as well as penning pieces for Redbook, Prevention and Quest. She is also a professor at The New School University, where she has been teaching courses on creative and media writing since 2001. She lives in Manhattan’s East Village with her son, Jamie, and her husband, Jim.

Paul Soto, a critic and gallerist based in Los Angeles, spoke to art advisers to explore the world of modern photography for “Image Makers” (page 24). Soto has also contributed to Art in America, Flash Art, Interview Magazine and Uta Barth: To Draw With Light, published by Blind Spot. He works at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects.

For “Secret Gardens” (page 48), Beth Dunlop took on the task of unearthing some of the world’s most breathtaking rooftop spaces. The editor of MODERN Magazine, Dunlop is also an award-winning writer who has penned numerous books on design, including The Tropical Cottage: At Home in Coconut Grove. The longtime architecture critic of The Miami Herald, she has also contributed to national magazines such as House and Garden, Metropolitan Home, Architectural Digest and Metropolis, and is the former editor-in-chief of HOME Miami, HOME Fort Lauderdale and the online-only HOME Los Angeles. A frequent lecturer at museums, at universities and in public/civic programs, Dunlop was was guest curator for Marking the Millennium: 21st Century Miami Architecture at the Coral Gables Museum in the spring of 2014. She lives in Miami Beach with her husband and their golden doodle.

Rebecca Kleinman covered the South Florida scene for our Scoop section (page 30), as well as interviewed fine art and design gallery founder Cristina Grajales for one of our Spotlights (page 18). “Cristina’s booth is always one of my favorite stops during the annual Design Miami/,” says Kleinman, whose work has appeared in Architectural Digest, Travel + Leisure and Women’s Wear Daily. “She’s creating a bigger platform for design, much like how art has become de rigueur in hotels, malls and residential high rises.”

Journalist Tom Austin’s credits include the Miami Herald, Paper, Men’s Journal and People magazine. A Miami native, Austin has witnessed the transformation of Miami Beach from a sleepy retirement community to a booming international city, home to star architects and an internationally recognized cultural scene. So it was with great enthusiasm that he chatted with developer Valerio Morabito about his first Miami-based project, Beach House 8 (“Roman Empire,” page 42). Austin’s book The Surf Club, chronicling the history of the circa-1930 private club that is set to become a condominium and hotel project, was recently published by Assouline. Currently, he is working on a history of Miami Beach, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2015. 4

When Sotheby’s and RM Auctions partnered on Art of the Automobile, the result was a record-breaking auction that generated nearly $63 million in just two hours. The sale featured a carefully curated selection of cars, motorcycles and memorabilia that showcased a century of automotive history and design. Classics like a 1892 Brewster carriage once owned by the Vanderbilt family and a 1941 Cadillac limousine custom built for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were displayed in a gallery space normally reserved for fine paintings and sculptures. “We wanted to build up the idea that the automobile by itself is an artistic expression,” says Ian Kelleher, a car specialist with RM Auctions. “So we chose unique cars that you would not see in a traditional auction.” Top-sale honors went to a 1964 Ferrari 250 LM, which sold for $14.3 million, a new world record for the model, and a 1938 Talbot-Lago T150-C SS Teardrop Cabriolet, regarded as one of the most beautiful coach cars built in its time, which fetched $7.2 million. “The interest was outstanding,” Kelleher says of the event, which included a symposium about automobile design. “There’s a tremendous amount of satisfaction knowing that we’ve done something to raise future interest in car collecting.”

Contemporary Coup Post-war artists like Warhol and de Kooning make auction history.

Global art collectors spent an unprecedented $381 million during the most successful one-night auction in Sotheby’s history. During the auction, which revolved around contemporary works, striking pieces by Cy Twombly, Gerhard Richter, Willem de Kooning and Jean-Michel Basquiat were snapped up by some of the world’s most high-profile buyers—among them hedge-fund manager Daniel S. Loeb, Hollywood agent Michael Ovitz and Miami-based collectors Don and Mera Rubbell. The evening’s top seller was Andy Warhol’s grisly diptych Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster), which sold for $105.4 million after an intense telephone bidding war. Three other Warhols dominated the night: Liz #1 (Early Colored Liz) went for $20.3 million; Flowers (Five Foot Flower) for $11.4 million; and 5 Deaths on Turquoise for $7.3 million. Cy Twombly’s Poems to the Sea, a collection of 24 sketches on paper, sold for an artist’s record of $21.7 million—well over the expected $6 million to $8 million. ◗

A 118.28-carat white diamond recently sold in Hong Kong for $30.8 million. Unmounted, the oval brilliant-cut gem was billed as the greatest white diamond ever to be offered at auction. A 59.6-carat pink diamond dubbed The Pink Dream sold in Geneva for $83.2 million. The stone now holds the world auction record for any diamond or jewel, surpassing the previous record holder—the Graff Pink—which sold for about half that amount.

Released earlier this year, The Monuments Men, starring George Clooney, is a film based on the reallife story of a band of international art experts who braved the battlefront to recover nearly five million masterpieces that were stolen by Nazis during World War II. For today’s collector, such pieces hold great appeal. “Collectors are interested in works of art with a history,” says Lucian Simmons, worldwide head of provenance and restitution at Sotheby’s New York. Sothebys’ restitution teams continue the work depicted in the movie. In some cases, they find stories on both sides of the canvas—masterpieces on the front, Nazi inventory marks on the back. And the sales of these works exceed all expectations. Painted in 1897, Camille Pissarro’s Boulevard Montmartre, Matinée De Printemps (above left) captured the excitement of fin-de-siecle Paris and its broad new avenues. The painting was once owned by Max Silberberg, a Jewish industrialist who assembled one of the best pre-war collections of nineteenth- and twentieth-century art in Germany. Forced by the Nazis to sell his entire collection, Silberberg later died in the Holocaust. It took his family decades to find his prized Pissarro. But find it they did, and in February Sotheby’s auctioned the elusive masterpiece for $32.1 million (it had been estimated at $11 million). It was a record for the artist—and a highlight in a sale that included pieces by Henri Matisse, Auguste Rodin, Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall. The white diamond below is the largest oval-shaped, D colour flawless or internally flawless diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America. It sold for more than $30 million at auction.

On June 19, thousands of art world cognoscenti will descend on Basel, Switzerland, for Art Basel, the premier global art marketplace with a winter edition in Miami Beach. Located in the country’s northwest corner, where Switzerland, France and Germany intersect, Basel is one of Europe’s most beautiful and culturally rich cities. Bisected by the Rhine, it is a perfectly preserved medieval city complete with winding cobblestone streets and a vividly painted renaissance town hall. Basel is also a showcase of Pritzker Prize–winning modern architecture that seamlessly blends in with the historic. With plenty of top-flight art museums and galleries, attendees have a number of possible diversions for their off hours. Here are a few of the best.

EAT

Cucumber salad with yogurt and escabeche at Cheval Blanc

Grab a table on the terrace overlooking the Rhine at the gourmet Cheval Blanc. TwoMichelin-star chef Peter Knogl creates dishes that are as visually arresting as they are delicious. Try the fillet of red mullet with crispy scales, saffron, black garlic and vinaigrette of tomatoes. An extensive wine list holds a selection of rare vintages from the Château Cheval Blanc. The modern setting—dark

wood floors, green leather banquettes, oversized light fixtures hanging from the ceiling— complements the food, which is a contemporary spin on a classic brasserie menu. Opt for the excellent veal sausage with rosti, or more ambitious choices such as breast of guinea fowl and pumpkin ravioli with black olives. VISIT The Vitra Design Museum is worth a visit for the structure itself, a sculptural deconstruction of towers, ramps and cubes designed by Frank Gehry. Inside, however, is an impressive collection of modern furniture and interior design, including furniture from the collection of Charles and Ray Eames. Always impeccably chic in crisp suits and a pixie haircut, Cristina Grajales is a fixture on the fine art and design circuit. Her namesake gallery in New York is the only American exhibitor to have participated in every Design Miami and Design Miami/Basel (in December and June, respectively) since the fair was launched in 2005. Much like art galleries have adapted to a twenty-first-century, global business model, the bold Colombian is passionate about charging forward in her field of expertise. ONE Life talked to Grajales about the future of the industry and her upcoming plans. ONE: How has the design market changed since your gallery opened in 2001? CG: Now there are so many [design] fairs, which make up half our business. They’re held in conjunction with art fairs since both cater to the same clients, though we weren’t as accepted in the beginning. During the first Design Miami, we were only allowed to be open at night, like vampires! Then Art Basel invested in it, and now we open the day before the main fair right across the street. More design fairs have sprung up, too, like PAD in London and Collective in New York. The Internet also has completely altered the landscape. Collectors are more informed than ever and know exactly what they want, so they keep dealers on their toes. ONE: Is fine design popping up in more places, in the same way that art is displayed at hotels and shopping centers? CG: Yes. We’ve created installations for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Miami and collaborated with real estate developer Roy Stillman on his Schumacher residential building’s public spaces [in

New York City]. It went over so well—with The New York Times and collectors like Aby Rosen and Alberto Mugrabi visiting—that he also commissioned us to design the units. Also, for New York Fashion Week, we curated an exhibit that incorporated Hatch’s fashions and jewelry at its Manhattan showroom. ONE: Any plans to expand your gallery locations? CG: We’re constantly getting requests to open more galleries, but we already have established a [global] presence through international fairs. I’m focusing on America, where most of my clients live, and the market’s hotter than ever since the economy has rebounded. ONE: What are some other hot markets right now? CG: I’m paying close attention to Latin America—from its artists, whose work is so creative and colorful, to its collectors and fairs. In Bogota last October, we designed a cool concept for ArtBo’s VIP lounge with walls of gray milk crates and Colombian rugs—it was like a Moroccan bazaar. And “Waterweavers: The River in

Contemporary Colombian Visual and Material Culture,” an exhibition at New York’s Bard Graduate Center, opened in April featuring textiles by one of our Bogota-based artists, Hechizoo. CG: Other than fairs, our gallery is putting on Sebastian Errazuriz’s third solo show in September, the same month his first museum retrospective opens at the Carnegie Museum of Art. Porsche goes back to the future, giving the new 911 Targa the look of its Sixties original.

It’s a mechanized ballet the great Nureyev would be proud of: At the touch of a button, the huge wrap-around glass rear window lifts, levitates and tilts rearward. Now it’s the turn of the center panel to lift, glide backward and come to rest behind the rear seats. As the rear glass returns to its original position, closed to open has taken a mere 20 seconds. This is the 2014 Porsche 911 Targa, the newest and arguably most appealing addition to the latest 911 range—and a lovely piece of semi-nostalgia that will warm the hearts of Porsche aficionados the world over. In 1965, Porsche solved the dilemma of not having a folding canvas top for its new 911 sports car by incorporating a lift-out roof panel. The company badged the car “Targa” after the thrilling road race held in the mountains of Sicily, the Targa Florio. One of the original Targa’s unique design cues was a silver-finished roll hoop that held the wraparound rear window. It was essential not only as a safety feature but also as a way of retaining rigidity in the body shell. The design became an enduring feature of the 911 through the mid-1990s. It was then replaced with a clever and elegant arrangement 22

where a glass roof panel powered rearward and rested on top of the rear window, but it wasn’t a true Targa. This latest 911 Targa brings back the hoop (which is painted silver like the original). Even the iconic Targa logo is mounted in its original location. The form and functionality of this new folding top is design and engineering at its finest. That fabric center section is actually a featherweight magnesium panel topped with the same indestructible cloth used on Porsche’s convertibles. But why a Targa-topped 911 when you can have a full convertible, or even a coupe with a sunroof? What’s the advantage? For one, it provides a more enjoyable open-air driving experience. With the center roof panel stowed, you get the full sun-on-your-face feeling of a convertible, but you feel more protected having the rear window there. It’s also much more enjoyable in winter; top off and side windows raised, more of the heat stays in. Perhaps the biggest advantage it offers over a full convertible is visibility. Driving a convertible with the top raised can be like driving in a coal mine with more blind spots than a UPS

The most sought-after photographs today are being produced by young artists assuming more unconventional formats. Unafraid to work in different media, this new generation of photography artists prefers the term “imagemaking,” as it accommodates many types of practices that blend darkroom and digital printmaking with sculpture, painting and installation. The result is a broader conversation about how images circulate in the world and via technology. And vanguard collectors are catching on to this future-focused market, sidestepping the traditional editioned works in favor of unique pieces that incorporate distinctly photographic elements—like silkscreens, collage and appropriated images. “Clients I’ve worked with aren’t singularly minded,” says art adviser Heather Flow (flowadvisory.com). “The focus isn’t just on photography. Today, there is no line drawn between media. We are dealing with a fluid environment.” Flow cites the work of Amsterdam-based artist Katja Novitskova and New York–based artist Michele Abeles— both incorporate stock imagery and advertisements, referencing histories of appropriation from the 1970s, in particular the Pictures Generation. Novitskova’s work often takes the form of prints on aluminum cutouts, while

Abeles often has a peculiar visual element repeating in all of her photographs within an exhibition, which suggests their entwinement as one installation even after each picture leaves the gallery and finds its own home within a collection. “These works are not trying to generate original images but are instead trying to reflect, in a non-fetishistic way, these existing stocks of images that are out in the world within their objects and installations,” says Flow. “Artists today are questioning the medium of photography itself,” adds art adviser Sarah Jane Bruce (sjbfineart services.com). Bruce sees this reflected in the work of artists like New York–based Liz Deschenes, who uses her photographs as sculptural objects, hanging them in high corners protruding from the wall; and Los Angeles–based Carter Mull, who culls digital images together to create photographic collages that he then paints and draws over. Flow and Bruce refer to the recent exhibition “What Is a Photograph?” at the International Center of Photography in New York, whose curator, Carol Squiers, asks what it even means to take a photograph, or for an artwork to exist as a photograph. “I think a show like this reflects a welcomed lack of concern with editioned versus singular works, between photography and other areas of art,” says Bruce. ◗

Heather Flow: Speculative Realism A client and I loaned works to the recent exhibition ‘Speculations on Anonymous Materials’ at the Fridericianum in Kassel, Germany, and we have been spending a lot of time thinking about speculative realism and the synthetic experience of today. Repetition for artists in that exhibition, like Pamela Rosenkranz or Aleksandra Domanovic, is so often a matter of weaving this web of relations between people, images and objects. What this kind of work is dealing with, I’m not sure the market is necessarily ready for, but I think that it’s the type of work that is speaking to our current human condition, and that’s what art should be doing.”

Ethridge is more of a straight-on photographer, and his work really captures what it’s like being an artist and living in New York. It’s a sign of the times. For Roe, there is no difference between advertising images and real life anymore. These images are seeped so deeply into our everyday lives. He uses the term ‘fugue state’ in the press release for his recent solo show, which describes being bombarded by these images, even in your sleep, and you wake up and you don’t know where you are anymore.”

Aspen’s star chef pop-up is headed to New York. When the Chefs Club opened at the St. Regis Aspen Resort in 2012, it was intended to showcase Food & Wine’s annually selected Best New Chefs in a joint magazine/restaurant venture. The concept: Four of the anointed Best New Chefs would create dishes that would be offered on the regular menu, and each would make special guest appearances during a six-month stint. The rotating chefs/pop-up idea was such a hit, soon more established chefs started dropping in to make guest appearances as well. Now foodie favorite New York City is getting in on the action with an outpost of the Chefs Club opening in Manhattan in the fall. The reason for such overwhelming success? “The concept gives the chefs a place to express themselves,” says Chefs Club Culinary Director Didier Elena, a veteran of Alain Ducasse’s empire. In other words, new chefs can test their ideas without the pressure of restaurant receipts rising or falling depending on their success. Famous chefs like recent guest Eric Ripert of New York’s Le Bernardin can try out something new outside of their established menus.

And the patrons are reaping the benefits of this experimentation. “Having these chefs in the same location could not be easier for guests,” says Elena. “They can come to the Chefs Club and have a different experience without taking a plane [to all the different restaurants].” The selection process starts when the magazine announces the year’s list of Best New Chefs in late April/early May. Elena and his team look seriously at six or seven possibilities, confirm availability and select the final four. Past selections include Missy Robbins, former executive chef at New York’s A Voce;

Elena expects this system to carry forward to the planned New York edition—about which very little has been decided yet except for the location in the historic, downtown Puck Building on the edge of Soho. New York was an obvious choice for a second location, says Elena: “Food & Wine is, of course, in New York, and it’s good to be in a city where the food is so important.” And they might not be stopping there. “This could work in several places,” he adds. “Different chefs, different places in the U.S. Why not?” (315 E. GRAZE Global Gastro A tour of the world’s newest palate pleasers

When the world’s gastronomic focus shifted to the Nordic countries, it settled firmly in Copenhagen and the pioneering temple Noma. It’s still there, of course, but the spotlight has widened, shining brightly on Amass when it opened last July. Chef/owner Matt Orlando created Amass following stints at a who’s who lineup of other restaurants—he was Noma’s first chef de cuisine and has also worked all around the globe at Aureole, Le Bernardin, Per Se, Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and The Fat Duck. His focus now is strictly New Nordic, but he combines ingredients in ways that are surprising and original but also accessible—not always the case in New Nordic cuisine—like razor clams and bone marrow, preserved green tomatoes and Arctic char, mustard greens and salted plums. Amass is fine dining, but Orlando also emphasizes informality—the restaurant is set in a former tool depot for shipbuilders, and the dining room has an open plan and a modern color scheme of gray and black. Orlando also holds areas for walk-ins and features a communal table—unusual in Copenhagen. Americans love it. The locals are a bit leery but are adapting. Yong Yi Ting Shanghai Local celebrity Chef Tony Lu made his name by creating extravagant restaurants in 1930s French Concession mansions. The so-called “Fu Group”—Fu 1088, 1039 and 1015—showcased Shanghai cuisine in the intimate rooms of those elegant houses. In overseeing the menu at Yong Yi Ting, in the Mandarin Oriental, he aimed even higher. Jiang Nan (South of the Yangtze) cuisine is spotlighted here, giving the lighter and more delicate cuisine of the neighboring provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu equal time with Shanghai’s own robust preparations. The results are a sophisticated mix—dishes like Bathed in Supreme Broth Baby Lobster (lobster poached in a buttery seafood broth, the shell filled with sticky rice and hairy crab paste) alongside simpler but superbly executed dishes such as braised pork ribs with plum sauce. Even more striking than the menu, though, is the setting—10,000 square feet divided into separate dining areas with sheer panels and white latticework panels, 18-foot ceilings from which oversized white lanterns hang low and burgundy leather chairs contrast with a deep mahogany bar. And, unlike restaurants in the neighboring skyscrapers, the dining room is a level down from the lobby, leading to an outdoor garden and views up to the towering architectural creations all around. The Pot Luck Club & Gallery Cape Town The newest spot from local star chef Luke Dale-Roberts began as a tiny room tucked alongside his restaurant, The Test Kitchen. Last year, he relaunched The Pot Luck Club & Gallery in expanded form in a stone- and wood-filled room in The Silo at The Old Biscuit Mill. The 360-degree views of the city are one draw; the globetrotting list of small dishes is the other. The menu changes frequently, but the divisions stay the same: Salty, Sweet, Sour, Umami, Bitter and Sweet Ending. Dale-Roberts’ best dishes include wood-fired scallops with yuzu dressing and foie gras butter from the Umami side and 5-spiced glazed pork belly with cured roasted apple, grated halva and crackling from the Sweet. Some fans followed him over from his previous stint at Agapé Substance; others were drawn by word of mouth of his three-Michelin-star reputation and pedigree working in the kitchens of Marc Veyrat and Alain Passard. One of Toutain’s most important influences, though, was his grandparents’ Normandy farm and the fresh vegetables that were part of his meals growing up. Those formative years resulted in Toutain’s insistence today on using prime ingredients in his creative combinations that change daily— such as smoked eel in black sesame cream, oysters and kiwi, and roast pork loin edged in ground coffee beans. In contrast to the complexity on the plate, the restaurant itself is simple and soothing, furnished in light wood, clean-line tables and chairs and a floor-to-ceiling glass wall that brings in the City of Light. Piero Lissoni is a “pure modernist,” at least that’s the way he describes himself. “I am a contemporary person,” he says. So when Lionheart Capital, developer of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach, turned to the award-winning architect to design its latest property, it may have seemed to some like an odd choice for an iconic brand so rooted in tradition. But make no mistake: Lissoni has every intention of respecting the brand. “I work in 2014, and I like to be a modernist,” he says. “But in the same moment, I never forget tradition.” Lissoni has been hired by Lionheart Capital to design Miami’s newest private waterfront residences—The RitzCarlton Residences, Miami Beach. It’s a daunting task: With 85 properties in 30 countries, the hotel chain’s familiar kingly lodgings and service are lauded worldwide. Lissoni’s job is to bring that level of luxury to the private residences, and to strike a blance between honoring the legacy of the brand and fitting the structure into Miami’s modern skyline. The project is Lissoni’s first in the United States, and he couldn’t be more excited about working in a city he first visited from his native Milan more than 20 years ago—a time when he says Miami was still getting its sea legs, in such a way. “Back then, Miami was a tourist town,” says Lissoni. “Now it’s completely different. It’s an international city, very sophisticated and on the cutting edge of design.” ONELIFE

“Miami was one of the most modern towns in the 1920s,” he adds. “It was the capital of Art Deco. Now it is time for Miami to be modern again.” And that, he says, includes The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach. For the project, Lissoni—who works out of his offices in Milan and New York City—is collaborating with Miami firm ADD Inc. When it is finished in the winter of 2016, the self-contained community will occupy seven acres in a quiet corner of Miami Beach on the shores of Surprise Lake, near the Lincoln Road shopping district. The LEED-certified property will consist of 111 two- to four-bedroom multi-million-dollar units and 15 villas—each offering views of the city and Biscayne Bay. With Lissoni’s impressive international résumé, there’s no doubt Miami is in for a wonderful addition. Since founding Lissoni Associati with Nicoletta Canesi in 1986, the architect has lent his talents to

everything from multi-million-dollar private residences to corporate headquarters and flagship stores like the Benetton concept store in Istanbul. In Amsterdam, he seamlessly merged the city’s history with the needs of today’s jet-setters when he designed the über-luxurious Hotel Conservatorium Amsterdam, set in a former late-nineteenth-century music conservatory. Lissoni’s attention to detail, clean modern lines and use of the hotel’s surroundings to bring in as much natural light as possible helped make the hotel a key destination central to the area’s urban regeneration. He worked similarly with Jerusalem’s Mamilla Hotel, located in the city center with breathtaking views of the Old City walls, the Tower of David and the Jaffa Gate. In an area rich with history, Lissoni was able to incorporate the past while creating a twenty-first-century, world-class hotel built by Moshe Safdie. Other Lissoni projects include the interior design of Luciano Benetton’s superyacht, Tribú, and the recent renovation of the Ferrari Club House at the Fiorano Circuit racetrack in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. He also designs furniture, graphics and products, creating a complete aesthetic for any given project. At The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach—one of only a few stand-alone Ritz-Carlton Residences in the world—Lissoni’s intention is to complement and enhance the natural beauty of Miami. “Think houses without walls and open spaces—like a loft in New York, with [large] windows to let in the light,” says Lissoni. Inside, the designer’s touch is everywhere, from the custom-designed Boffi chef’s kitchens with oversized stone countertops, Gaggenau applicances and built-in coffee systems to the smart-home technology. Larger units are equipped with private elevator foyers, private terraces, outdoor kitchens and

private pools. Lissoni’s services are available for buyers who want to customize their new homes in more detail. Of course, this is a Ritz-Carlton property, so topnotch amenities are part of the package. It offers a halfacre rooftop infinity pool with a waterfall, cabanas and a whirlpool spa, a private marina, a poolside restaurant, and a private spa treatment suite, to name just a few. Perhaps the best part of the project, says Lissoni, is the location of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Miami Beach. At 4701 North Meridian Avenue, the property not only fronts the only lake in the area, but also offers views of the nearby Intracoastal and the Atlantic—it’s an exclusive community literally surrounded by water. “This is a very special place. It’s in a city but it can feel like a village. And having the lake, ocean and waterway is an unusual combination. I love it,” says Lissoni. ◗

One woman’s journey into the heart of the Southwest. What began as a trip with her mother in 1989 ended up changing Lauren Harrison Genovese’s life. The destination? Santa Fe, capital city of the “Land of Enchantment,” New Mexico. Perched at an elevation of more than 7,000 feet, Santa Fe is famous for its vast beauty, ever-changing light and vibrant pastiche of art and culture. It is a small city of approximately 70,000 people, surrounded by the Sangre de Cristo (translation: blood of Christ) and Jemez mountain ranges. Those who travel to Santa Fe often never leave its clutches: Photographers and artists flock there for the landscape and light; spiritualists for the like-minded community; foodies for the inspiring cuisine. 36

“When I first came to Santa Fe, I felt this sense of spirituality,” says Genovese, a former businesswoman who now gives her time and treasure to a multitude of organizations (she’s vice chair at Miami’s Kristi House and board chair at St. Philip’s Episcopal School). “I’d grown up on a cattle ranch in Texas and appreciated the big, open skies. I felt right at home.” She began traveling with more frequency between her Mizner-inspired home in Coral Gables and Santa Fe, and as time marched on, she and her future husband John, a founding partner of a top South Florida law firm, bought their first Santa Fe home in 2000. Since then, their growing family, which now includes 9-year-old twins Stefan and Alessandra, has been ensconced in a new house.

The Genoveses found their dream Southwest abode nestled in a community of 60 properties developed in the 1980s called Vista Redonda, which is located about 20 minutes north of Santa Fe proper. “We took our time finding the right place,” explains Genovese. “What sold us on this house was the 360-degree view.” The house is a 6,000-square-foot Tuscan contemporary with a mandated adobe-style exterior. “So many places we looked at didn’t take advantage of the surroundings,” says Genovese. “They didn’t incorporate the lovely views, amazing sunsets and sweeping vistas. This home was so well built to show the neighboring ski basin, the badlands and even the views of Colorado 200 miles away.” Another stunning feature is the 109-foot hallway that is terraced down a hill, which provides views of the mountains and the twinkling lights of Los Alamos. A favorite activity is horseback riding at Bishop’s Lodge Ranch Resort & Spa (505.412.4067, bishopslodge.com), a renowned resort with a rich history that abuts the Santa Fe National Forest at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. “Wranglers will take us out on trails in the national forest,” Genovese explains. “I go as often as I can, because it’s a way to experience the solitude and tranquility of nature and to see views that so few are able to see because you can’t drive there. It’s so amazingly quiet.” The wrangler she most likes to ride with is renowned local “horse whisperer” Joaquin Gonzalez. “He’s so knowledgeable,” she says. “The horses seem to think he’s one of them.”

After a brisk ride, there is nothing like unwinding at a favorite local haunt. A small bar in the nearby village of Tesuque, the Tesuque Village Market (505.988.8848, tesuquevillagemarket.com), serves great grapefruit margaritas and chicken chorizo enchiladas. “There are creaky oak wood floors,” she describes. “It’s very rustic and casual.” When it comes to fashion, Santa Fe style is rooted in the dusty landscape and Genovese embraces it with great affection. “When I’m there, I love to wear my cowboy boots and cowboy hats,” she says. “I collect Native American jewelry, and my favorite place to shop for it is Ortega’s on the Plaza” (505.988.1866, ortegasontheplaza.com). Much of the jewelry is crafted in nearby pueblos, but the shop also features contemporary jewelry artists. “One of my favorite [Native American jewelry] designers is Federico Jimenez,” she says. “He creates beautiful, bold statement pieces that are very traditional with a modern flair.” Shopping in Santa Fe is as easy as heading downtown to the central picturesque Plaza, a historic square surrounded on one side by the old Palace of the Governors museum and outdoor market arcade, and by shops and restaurants. It’s a great spot for antiques, particularly Santos from all over South and Central America. Santos are sculptures carved from wood that depict various religious figures. Many collectors focus on the antique Santos, but some modern artists in Santa Fe have taken the art to a new level. Original works by popular local artist Juan Sandoval can be found in boutiques around town.

Another popular destination with locals is the Santa Fe Railyard (505.982.3373, railyardsantafe.com), a junction of shops, restaurants and the Saturday Santa Fe Farmers Market (505.983.4098, santafefarmersmarket.com). Tourists flock to Santa Fe year round, but the area is most crowded during the summer months, when the performing arts come alive. “There’s so much going on in the summers here,” Genovese says. “There is, of course, the Santa Fe Opera, which we love; the Folk Art Festival; as well as the annual Chamber Music Festival.”

The Santa Fe Opera House (505.986.5900, santafeopera. org) puts on its season every year in July and August, and the sweeping open-air theater design offers indelible acoustics and views of starlit skies against the backdrop of world-class music. The Chamber Music Festival (505.982.1890, santafechamber music.com) runs for six weeks during the summer, with concerts taking place in three charming venues, including the stately old Lensic Performing Arts Center located off the Plaza. In addition to the performing arts, Santa Fe has long been a hub for artists and writers, dating back to the days when D.H. Lawrence used to pass through town. Georgia O’Keeffe famously lived in the tiny village of Abiquiu, 50 miles north of Santa Fe, and many still make the pilgrimage to tour her Spanish Colonial–era home. It’s one of Genovese’s most-loved spots in the area. “Tears roll down my cheeks every time I go into her house,” she says. “To see the personal space of such a creative visionary, and to see how she got her inspiration from the view of her bedroom window and the pile of river rocks that she arranged on the edge of a banco (bench) in the living room, as well as the skeleton of a coiled rattle snake ready to strike… It’s so moving.” If short on time, O’Keeffe’s namesake museum (505.946.1000, okeeffemuseum.org), located on Santa Fe’s Museum Hill, is a brilliant excursion. Filled with more than 1,000 works by the artist— along with nearly 2,000 by other artists of note—the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is one of the most popular museums in town. Detour: Sedona About 400 miles to the west of Santa Fe lies another epicenter of Southwestern beauty and Native American culture: Sedona, Arizona. Perched at an altitude of 4,500 feet at the edge of the stunning 100,000-square-mile Sonoran Desert, Sedona is often referred to as “Red Rock Country” because of its signature red landscape and Red Rock State Park, which boasts 286 stunning acres of natural preserve. of historically significant pieces in a Pueblo Revival–style building designed by renowned architect John Gaw Meem in 1930. It’s “a little jewel box of a museum,” says Genovese. Also on Museum Hill, the outstanding Museum of International Folk Art (505.476.1200, internationalfolkart.org) showcases works from more than 100 countries. While downtown near the Plaza—as well as on Canyon Road, about a half mile down the road—scores of art galleries nestle into the narrow streets. Dinner in Santa Fe is an experience in itself. This is a chili town— and locals here prefer the green Hatch variety, which can be found in some form on just about any regional-style menu in the area. But the cuisine runs the gamut from Mexican to organic to fine dining. (Insider tip: If in a burrito joint, say, “Make mine Christmas” and you’ll get a smattering of both red and green chile on top.) One local eatery Genovese frequents is the Cowgirl Santa Fe (505.982.2565, cowgirlsantafe.com). “I take my friends here for its casual and warm setting,” she says. “We’ll go for their barbecue or their Frito pie.” The restaurant also serves gamey fare—like elk, venison and buffalo burgers—that’s harder to find in other parts of the country. But perhaps the ultimate dining experience is an upscale establishment on Canyon Road called Geronimo Restaurant (505.982.1500, geronimorestaurant.com). “It’s the consummate dining experience in Santa Fe,” Genovese says. “The global eclectic cuisine is very upscale, and it’s housed in what was a home from the 1700s. The structure, with its kiva fireplaces and wooden beams, is breathtaking.” ◗

The technique derived from the Roman era but was really coined and re-popularized in France back in the sixteenth century. Why I love it: I love taking a sixteenth-century technique and applying it in creative ways to modern furniture designed by us, or taking an existing boring piece perhaps found in a flea market and revitalizing it to something spectacular that can literally illuminate a room. Where to put it: Powder rooms are an excellent place to use this type of decor, as these spaces are always relatively small. Using a mirror expands a space, but using a reverse-painted glass and enhancing the space with art and a mirror can be spectacular. On a morning rich with promise in Miami Beach, 40-year-old Valerio Morabito, the Italian developer of the upcoming Beach House 8 condominium, is contemplating the allure of Miami: “This city has a Latin soul, which is very familiar to Italians. But Miami is an American environment too, a place where you can get things done.” Originally from Rome, Morabito has already left an indelible stamp on American soil, beginning in Manhattan. In a recent New York Post article, “Five Real Estate Tastemakers Ruling the East Coast,” author Heidi Mitchell put Morabito in a select group that includes the internationally recognized Danish architect Bjarke Ingels and Laurinda Spear, one of the original partners in the Miami-based Arquitectonica. Now Morabito is bringing his talent to Miami with Beach House 8. It’s worth nothing that many of the other principals at Beach House 8 share Morabito’s Italian roots. Interior design is being spearheaded by Michele Bonan, of Florence, whose credits include JK Place Firenze and the Marquis Faubourg SaintHonore, as well as Grovenor House. And Morabito’s business partner in the project 42

is Miami-based developer Ugo Colombo, who is responsible for such efforts as the Santa Maria, Grovenor House and the Epic Residences and Hotel. The fourth creative in the mix is Peruvian-born Bernardo FortBrescia, founding partner of Arquitectonica. The shared Italian sensibility is something Morabito says infuses the progress of the building: “When we’re all together, we talk like crazy! But Italians grow up surrounded by good design. There’s a higher attention to detail, and we like to build things that last.” Design and architecture are rooted in Morabito’s DNA. His family has been in the construction business in Rome for three generations and remains the secondlargest general contractor in Italy today. “On a molecular level, that’s where my passion comes from—we do big infrastructure projects, highways and such, as well as other kinds of things,” Morabito says. “In Rome, I worked on several conversions of historic palaces into office buildings, and there is creativity in that, bringing an old building back to life. But eventually, I wanted to work on my own and explore different kinds of projects.”

For a time, Morabito even made a brief creative foray into the movie business, producing the 2010 thriller 13 starring Mickey Rourke and 50 Cent. “It was a lot of time and effort for very little financial return,” he says. “We did the movie on a tight budget and paid back our investors, but not much more than that.” So it was back to his passion—and he returned with a splash. Morabito entered the New York real-estate game in SoHo’s Cast Iron Historic District when he turned a circa 1860 townhouse— once home to the New York City Silk Manufacturing Company—into 70 Greene Street, a striking property equipped with a ground floor of retail space; two sleek, modern full-floor apartments; and a duplex penthouse. For the project, Morabito worked with Joseph Pell Lombardi, an architect responsible for the Liberty Tower in New York’s Financial District and known for his work in historic preservation projects, from the Cartier Building to the Chrysler Building. “Valerio originally reached out to me because I’m very active in SoHo,” Lombardi recalls. “I’ve worked on 13 buildings on Greene Street alone. From his experience in Rome, he knew his way around the process of working with old buildings, though the issues involved in meeting the regulations of the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission were relatively new to him. 70 Greene Street had become an office building atop a ground-floor retail space. We made two loft apartments from the two floors of offices and

added a rooftop addition for the duplex penthouse, which required meeting the standards for rooftop setbacks.” Uptown, at 45 East 74th Street, Morabito converted a small apartment building built in 1879 into a spectacular modern townhouse. The New York Times hailed his work as a “neo-Roman makeover.” The five-bedroom townhouse with a rooftop soaking pool, a basement pool and waterfall, and an elevator eventually sold for $26 million to Zhang Xin, the CEO of the development firm SOHO China, which has a stake in New York’s GM Building. Lombardi worked on 45 East 74th Street as well. “In the 1950s, the building had been reconstructed into small apartments,” he says. “Valerio wanted to create a traditional Roman palazzo, with classical columns representing the entrance. Not too many townhouses have two pools, and 45 East 74th is a spectacular, very special property.” Pleased with the outcome, Morabito lived in the townhouse for several months after finishing the project. “It was too beautiful to get rid of right away,” he told The Wall Street Journal. Eventually, Morabito found himself in Miami, trying a new approach to real-estate development. This time, he was building a project—Beach House 8 at 3651 Collins Avenue—from the

ground up. The existing building was vacant and had been condemned; Morabito and his partners tore it down and started from scratch. Beach House 8 is part of an architectural dialogue, a building balanced between the masters of the past—such as Morris Lapidus of the Fontainebleau and Eden Roc fame—and the new era of Miami. Recently, an assortment of Pritzker Prize–winning architects have been changing the future of Miami Beach’s skyline. And to FortBrescia, Beach House 8 is also part of that design conversation. “When out-of-town `starchitects’ began arriving in Miami a number of years ago, often the work they were commissioned to do was restore the grand architecture of Miami Beach,” he says. “Now that much of that work has been done, the modernity of projects like Beach House 8 can contribute new ideas about contemporary life, essential to the growth of any vibrant city.” ONELIFE 45

At the same time, adds Morabito, when completed, the property will fit seamlessly into the city skyline. “Beach House 8 is not just another huge new tower—this is a European-scale project that’s about luxury and privacy,” he says. The work that Arquitectonica has done on Beach House is in sync with the area, full of beautiful MiMo buildings that are an important part of Miami’s architectural heritage.” The property itself is made up of “separate villas in the sky,” says Morabito. “The building has only eight floor-through apartments; there’s a duplex penthouse on the roof with a very generous outdoor terrace—about 6,000 square feet—with

its own pool. What Bernardo Fort-Brescia of Arquitectonica did was create a series of rectangles along the building, establishing an abstract sense of a secluded house in the sky.” Each apartment is framed like a rectangular painting, encapsulated in a kind of architectural conceit that defines the apartment as a singular environment. Fort-Brescia describes his inspiration as “a hill town of villas on the French Riviera, as seen in elevation from the water. In order to do this, I had to invent the sloped landscape of the hill town by stacking the villas. Each residence can be perceived as its ultimate abstraction, the rectangle. “The site conditions gave me the freedom to create a custom design with no limitations. The villas slide back and forth facing out to the ocean. They are moving toward the waterfront, running toward the sea.” The apartments at Beach House 8—which are priced from $5.9 million to $14 million—range in scope from 3,783 to 5,200 square feet, with terraces beginning at 1,000 square feet. Morabito says when it came to interior design, Michele Bonan was the natural choice. “Michele is from Florence, which gives him a background with a meticulous sense of design,” Morabito says. “And he’s very good at researching materials. His projects are fresh and young, but also sophisticated and very elegant.” Bonan’s interiors are all about luxury: Boffi kitchens with Calacatta Gold stone countertops

and built-in Meile espresso machines; spa-like bathrooms with Carrara marble floors and freestanding tubs that have the grace and gravity of sculpture; a 75-foot pool, a fitness center with Technogym equipment and eight private cabanas round out the luxe package. To Bonan, Beach House 8 is a continuation of his design credo: “Harmony, coherence and irony are the keys.” With Beach House 8 near completion (expected: June 2015), Morabito is already looking for his next project, which could end up being in the Edgewater neighborhood of mainland Miami. “Eventually, the high-end market will start to slow down, and what’s coming, rather than just expensive vacation homes for the wealthy, is homes for a wave of successful young professionals—people from New York, Europe and everywhere else that will change the city all over again,” Morabito says. “These new arrivals will create international neighborhoods with a whole range of people enjoying complete, sophisticated environments.” Morabito, of course, is one of those new arrivals to Miami, re-making himself—and Miami’s skyline—in America’s youngest major city. “In the newness of Miami, Europeans, people like myself, find freedom,” he observes. “There’s less a sense of judgment here, an equality that Europe can lack. t’s axiomatic: Where land is scarce, gardens are precious, and to find some of the most beautiful gardens in metropolises like Paris, New York and Miami, you need to look up—way up. “Roof gardens are the sweet bonus that comes with urban density,” says architect Terence Riley, former chief curator of architecture and design at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and former director of the Perez Art Museum Miami. “Street life at ground level and green serenity above are a great formula for livable cities.” Garden expert Sarah Kinbar Ristorcelli agrees. “People want an immediate connection to the outdoors, and this is true whether they are living in the country or the city,” says the former editor of Garden Design magazine. “A rooftop garden, whether it is designed for a residential or business space, can offer people that intimate connection to nature.”

Collector and philanthropist Ella Cisneros-Fontanals wanted to feel that connection in her Miami penthouse (one of her many homes around the world). When she asked Raymond Jungles to design a garden, she told him, “The sky’s the limit.” And so it was: At the top of Coconut Grove’s prestigious 32-story Grovenor House rests a sky-high oasis with views of both city and sea— not to mention the expansive blue sky. To create the space, Jungles worked alongside Spanish interior designer Luis Bustamante to create a garden with, as Jungles describes, “plantings as lush as the high winds and glaring sun would allow.” A focal point of the garden is the pool, which has ipe wood platforms around the infinity edges and is adjacent to a water wall, where thousands of tiny fiber optic filaments have been placed between the stones and twinkle at night as if echoing the city lights beyond. Another glorious penthouse garden hides on the top floor of a luxury building in Chicago. For this particular garden, award-winning landscape architecture firm Hoerr Schaudt (the firm behind the Dec Rooftop Lounge + Bar at the city’s Ritz-Carlton) envisioned a comfortable outdoor room. The architects lined the space with a 40-foot-long

Parisian garden designer Louis Benech created worlds within worlds for this Parisian rooftop garden, imparting both the idea of a sophisticated city residence and a country retreat by skillfully creating spaces that were highly manicured while others seem to grow wild.

cedar pergola to provide shade and privacy. For plantings, they chose a colorful combination of permanent trees and shrubs, as well as dwarf conifers and brilliantly hued flowers and vegetables. Across the pond in Paris, famed landscape architect Louis Benech feels strongly about linking man and nature. One of his designs, a bi-level rooftop garden in Paris’ Invalides section, brings the country to the city with formal clipped trees and hedges, as well as more informal meadow-like plantings that are intended to evoke the idea of the Greek isles, the grasses chosen to provide both privacy and transparency. Another of Benech’s inspiring designs overlooks the famed High Line in New York City. There, he relied on grasses, various species of sedum and, of all things, chives. “It sounds dumb,” he says, “but it is lovely.” Another benefit of roof gardens, says Benech, is that they are ecological. “A rooftop garden makes the water drain more slowly and offers very good thermal protection. It adds to biodiversity.” Proving Benech’s point, New Haven, Connecticut– based Balmori Associates designed two green roofs atop Solaire, a residential tower in New York’s Battery Park City. Integrated into the building’s hydrological system for drainage, reuse and irrigation, the gardens help cool the building’s rooftop through a process called evapotranspiration, where evaporation and plant transpiration combine to create a microclimate. While the twentieth-floor garden exists solely for ecological purposes, residents can enjoy bamboo, honeysuckle, ivy—and views to the Hudson River and beyond—from the nineteenth-floor garden.

In New York, the goal of another Balmori design was to connect interior and exterior space. For the penthouse apartment at 684 Broadway, the team sought to make what it termed a “magical landscape for living.” The garden starts inside the penthouse under a 20-footlong skylight and moves outside to the roof amid a “sea of sea grasses.” The space also includes a bi-level ipe wood deck as well as a private sunning area complete with a Jacuzzi and a separate outdoor kitchen. Although many roof gardens are private hideaways atop penthouses, there are some famous exceptions. Among them: the gardens at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco (currently under reconstruction), and the New World Center in Miami Beach, home to the New World Symphony. The New World Symphony garden was integral to the Frank Gehry–designed space. As the landscape architect on the project, Jungles worked closely with Gehry in the early stages of the building, making sure substantial planters were built into the structure so the garden could include mature gumbo-limbo and Clusia rosea trees, providing much-needed shade in sunny Miami.

Balmori Associates of New Haven, Connecticut created a double-decker garden for this New York City rooftop. The upper level exists entirely for ecological and aesthetic reasons (drainage, heat load transfer, plain old beauty) while the lower level is to be enjoyed by residents.

Lesser-known but just as spectacular are the secret gardens of luxury brand Hermès. Atop 24 Faubourg Saint-Honoré, at the company’s Paris headquarters, gardener Yasmina Demnati tends hollyhocks, narcissuses, impatiens and white-flowered pansies as well as herbs like sage and rosemary—and a venerable apple tree. The garden, which began during World War II as a small urban “farm” to grow fruits and vegetables, is not open to the public; it is enjoyed exclusively by the Hermès family and select employees. Hidden behind balustrades, the garden is also home to many gorgeous

The piece was created in 1987 to honor the 150th birthday of the House of Hermès and has since become an emblem for the company. Hermès’ newest showroom, which opened in Miami’s Design District in 2013, also features a roof garden. Designed by Terence Riley’s firm, Keenen/Riley the space atop the Garden Building is a green garden featuring specimen shade trees and is intended as a viewing deck. Whether it’s more for the views out or the private landscape within, one thing is for sure: The true beauty of a roof garden is that it offers an escape from the everyday. Go there and you are simply transported, for a minute, an hour or an afternoon. As Benech puts it: “A roof garden just makes life nicer.” ◗

“The Venice of America,” Fort Lauderdale is filled with mega-yachts and the sort of nightlife and cultural offerings found in metropolises like New York, Paris, Monte Carlo, Saint-Tropez or Dubai. There’s already a plethora of luxury residences to accommodate those wanting to take advantage of it all—and next year, one more will be ready for the taking. Privage—designed by Adache Group Architects (the group behind the W Resort & Residences) and developed by Grand Birch LLC, an affiliate of Ceiba Group—is expected to attract lots of baby boomers looking to downsize their space, says Ceiba’s Executive Vice President Jeremy Bedzow. The 22 units range from 3,000 to 4,000 square feet with private elevator access. Aesthetically speaking, Privage—located at 325 North Birch Road—is a welcome addition to the waterfront. “The beach is all about water, light and wind,” says Bedzow, adding that the building, while modern, “blends in perfectly with its natural surroundings” on the Intracoastal Waterway. Curved balconies emulate the Intracoastal current and nearby Atlantic Ocean waves, while floor-to-ceiling windows flood each unit with Florida sun, breezes and amazing views. Inside are modern perks like steam showers, fireplaces and solariums. For certain, boomers moving in from their luxury homes and into the condominium need not worry about giving up any of the comforts they may be used to. Amenities abound at Privage: Residents can visit the wine cellar

for a bottle to sip on their balcony, or stop by the indoor/outdoor cocktail lounge for a drink. They can plunge into the resort-style pool overlooking the Intracoastal, then hit the spa.
