About Dr Elena Polukhin
Dr. Elena Lev Polukhin, Board Certified specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with a 20 years of USA and international experience in pain management, addiction medicine, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, integrative pain management and public health.
She received by MD in Russia, and later on she completed PhD program at the University of St Peters burg Medical School, at Les gaft Academy. In collaboration with leading rehab centres in Europe, she conducted original research in rehabilitation of athletes, musicians and artists, using innovative rehabilitation techniques. She completed numerous visiting professorships in many distinguished universities in the USA and worldwide.
Dr. Polukhin was a professional athlete, competing in the Russian Olympic Team Reserve in gymnastics and she had been actively collaborating with the International Olympic Committee. Her special interests include art therapy and special services for musicians, and she had been working with various symphony orchestra musicians in Europe, Middle East and USA.
Dr. Elena Polukhin is also an active community leader and a humanitarian. She was one of the founders of the Eastern European Medical Society providing “culturally sensitive� medicine to non-US born patients and all others in need. In the past she was elected as VP of the nationwide Russian American Medical Association. Dr. Elena Lev Polukhin actively participated in international humanitarian missions helping disabled and poor people all over the world (Israel, Honduras, Peru and Russia), and currently she participates in the Global International Health Program developing international exchange PMR programs. In 2005, Dr. Polukhin was appointed by the Governor Tim Pawlenty to the Minnesota State Rehabilitation Council. In 2006, and she received prestige Bush Medical Leadership fellowship.
Doctor. Elena Polukhin combines her clinical practice with academic activities, and she is an adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota. The scope of her practice includes musculo-skeletal and neurological rehabilitation, pain management and addiction, combination of traditional Western medicine and folk, ethnic remedial techniques, BoNT therapeutic injections, viscosupplementation, prolotherapy, physical modalities, acupuncture and herbs.
Dr Polukhin developed culturally sensitive pain management and rehabilitation care plans that combined traditional North American approach and alternative methods of treatment. Those care plans were well received by many poor and indigent people from Latino, Hmong, East European and Somalian communities in MN.
Elena Polukhin program was successful and quickly gained reputation providing high patient’s satisfaction. Her academic activity was also successful: The University of Minnesota and Minnesota Medical Association supported her clinical activity and community education. She received a dual appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor with Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Department of Internal Medicine of University of MN Medical School.
Dr. Elena Polukhin continued her research focused on multidisciplinary team assessment of disability, international/vocational rehabilitation, pain management and the physiology of the back and neck muscles. She established collaboration with Karolinska Research Institute, Prof. Jan Sundquist, Professor and Chair, Center for Family and Community Medicine. Mutual research project “Self-reported Study of Mental health and Disability Issues in Fundamental Christians from former Soviet Union” was supported by the International Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ISPMR).
Dr. Polukhin continued her activities as an international/national preceptor for the development of national and international educational program for residents and physicians through collaboration with Cogni Med, Inc., US national educational program, NJ. Her research and humanitarian activity were approved by the International Society of PMR and she was nominated to the International Exchange Committee of the International Society of PMR (Program Director Dr. Mark Young). Dr. Polukhin is a part of the World Action International Education in PMR (WAPIE). I wrote the curriculum of National/International Educational Exchange Program focused on education of physicians from different American states and other countries. IShe organized USA visit and pro bono education of Dr. Kubanych Takyrbashev from the Embassy of Kyrgyzstan and to Dr. Wafaa Al Yaseedi from Qatar.
Her scientific and humanitarian work has been recognized with unprecedented award from the Bush Foundation who granted her with the Bush Medical Leadership Fellowship in 2006. Dr. Polukhin graduated from the Physicians’ Leadership College at the University of St. Thomas, MN that was focused both on leadership skills development.
Dr. Elena Lev Polukhin also continued her community services and humanitarian work. For the last several years she was serving as a President and Chair of the Eastern European Medical Society). In collaboration with the University of MN, MN Medical Association, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation she provided educational activity for the community and for medical providers. On a regular basis Dr. Polukhin is giving free lectures about culturally sensitive pain management.
She continues her activity with the MN Rehabilitation Council (Governor’s appointment), developing vocational rehabilitation programs, under the guidance of the MN Department of Economics and Employment (DEED). She continues her national and international humanitarian activities thru The International Rehabilitation Forum and Medical Ministry International, Inc., nonprofit groups dedicated to advancing medical rehabilitation in developing and underserved areas. In the past Dr. Polukhin organized and sponsored humanitarian mission trips to Israel, Russia, Honduras, Peru, Siberia, Bangladesh, Russia and Kyrgyzstan.
