Design Manifesto Being a young architect, what I aspire to achieve in my career is to create spaces for people to enjoy, spaces where people find themselves satisfied with their built environment, spaces that celebrate light and materiality. Spaces that allow for flexibility in terms of how people want to use them. For me, a good architect is the one who designs site specifically, spaces that are meant to be there for specific reasons, to be used in that period(s), in that climate. Every society is different and the architect should deeply understand the society and people he/she is designing for. I believe the impact architecture can have on society, way of thinking and approaching facts and situations is really crucial and architecture can influence social norms, but most of all promote interaction. Architecture in my opinion has the extreme strenght of designing frameworks inside which social interaction develops and this is why I want to be an architect, to design for good interaction and good space. My portfolio is organized in chapters, starting from Design Building Projects at Illinois Institute of Technology, moving to Parametric Design and Mapping Projects, then to Visual Training, Furniture Design (SOFA competition) and the Structural Project (Sony Center intuitive model). After those projects from Illinois Institute of Technology, I am presenting my 3rd year final project in Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University, where I did my undegraduate studies and I am finishing with the Architectural Competition ‘Regeneration of Aghia Sophia’ .

01/ Urban Symphony What is Good Space? Designing a Hybrid Building in Chicago Loop IIT College of Architecture Fall 2015 Location: Wells Street, West Loop, Chicago,IL, USA Professor: Steven Brubaker Group Project: Eleni Aroni, Sepideh Asadi, Melina de Oliveira

This project is about a building that can have various functions due to its flexible and good space characteristics. Our site is located on the West Loop, on Wells street and is on the intersection of Lake and Randolph. The lake intersection is a very strong intersection in terms on noise since the NW loop turn is just next to it. Sound and the movement of the train across the whole length of our site inspired us for this project. For this reason we decided to design a building that would

react to the movement of the train along the site, the visual and physical connection to it. Also one of our main ideas is to create an urban utopia inside the city, on our platform level which would work as a public space for people and most of the design decisions were taken in order to increase the exposure of the building to natural light and the formulation of a rhythm related to the different functions in different levels of the volumes.

03/ Industrial Lifeline in Detroit Masterplan in an Old Factory A spine that connects everything

This project is about regenerating the Old Packard Plant in Detoit by using the existing structures of the old factory and designing for new functions inside them. The partvof the masterplan I worked on is the spine, the lonf supporting system that runs along the whole site. The spine how I analyzed it is the part that offers possibilities and facilities for all the different functions and buildings along the rest of the site. The spine includes all the parking needed

for all the functions as well as a commercial district that offers goods and spaces for thinking and learning along its long length. On the first level of the spine the organization is based on the idea of the plug-in city, as the functions are taking place inside containers which shall be placed and removed according to the change of season or needs. Thus, the existing grid is used as a way to provide plug ins i between the 20 feet distances of the columns.

04/ House of the Future The Gallery House A House that works with the Community IIT College of Architecture Spring 2014 Location: Logan square, Chicago, IL, USA Professor: Karla Sierralta

In this project I had to think about the house of the future. My feeling is that neighborhoods are being left on the side in large cities like Chicago and I wanted to design a house for the neighborhood, where people would be welcome to visit, where event related to the community would take place

and social interaction would be the focus. I was really intrigued by the idea of designing a Gallery House, a house that can host artistic events once in a while but as well have all the needed elements in order to work as a private house.

06/ Parametric Case Study Oriente Station in Lisbon Model Iterations of an Existing Project IIT College of Architecture Summer 2015 Location: Lisbon, Portugal (Santiago Calatrava) Professor: Alphonso Peluso

In this project I had to choose an existing project and implement my knowledge on grasshopper to build it and make iterations using my definition. I chose the Oriente Station in Lisbon , by Santiago Calatrava because I believe it is an amazing project and has a lot of parametric potential in the way the basic points and the relationship between them can be changed and create different effects in the final result of the canopy. I was fascinated about the huge potential I had using my

definition and by changing 1 thing every time the totally different results I came up with. I loved this project because I am really interested in the huge power of the parametric design and how it can impact the future of architecture. Customized design, movable structures and facades, according to different needs of people, climate, part of the day and functions are some of the things that parametricism can contribute in I am fascinated to discover this even further.

07/ Parametric Bridge Spiral Shape Bridge Parametarizing Points and Paterns IIT College of Architecture Summer 2015 Location: on top of a river, somewhere.. Professor: Alphonso Peluso

In this project I again had to use Grasshopper and this time design my own parametric project that would offer alternative options in function and effects using a successful definiton. I designed I bridge in the shape of a spiral that would connect two sides of a river. Through the use of different patterns and the two spiral structures that work together to form between spaces, I wanted to offer to the visitors different ways to see their surrounding while being

inside the bridge. Moreover, the use of different colors and patterns offer another layer of richness to the reflections of the structure on the river and the the light textures and shadows created. Through the different iterations I was able to play with the spiral angles, distances and with the pattern variations.

08/ Mapping Paths Fete du Sandwich Changing an Event through Interventions IIT College of Architecture Spring 2014 Location: Crown Hall, Chicago, IL, USA Professor: Thomas Kearns Group Project:Eleni Aroni, Alexander Beckman

This project started as an idea to map movement in an event that happened in Crown Hall where we all met and ate together. (Fete du Sandwich) We produced vector drawings for this events and uml diagrams mapping movement/actions through time and relationships between people and objects. Then, the next assignment was about changing something in the event. What we decided to do is to design and put into the event structures that will allow for trash sculptures so that

people would interact more and use all those plastic plates, glasses, cans etc into something creative. The result is a unique sculpture that is indicative of the amount and the composition of the detritus resulting from the fete and is simultaneously an art object and a reminder of the amount of valuable material wasted everyday, encouraging users to be more thoughtful and creative with the waste they produce.

Sculpture Base Designs

The derlicte experiment is a crowd sourced sculptural element constructed entirely of used materials that would normally be discarded. The built feature is a simple array of metal rods that serve as a framework for the addition of recycled materials. As the fete concludes, rather than wastefully discarding materials in trash receptacles, users instead are invited to congregate around the derlicte sculpture as they contribute their own waste to a growing display that directly reflects the habits of use and re-use exhibited during the fete. The result is a unique sculpture that is indicative of the amount and the composition of the detritus resulting from the fete and is simultaneously an art object and a reminder of the amount of valuable material wasted every day, encouraging users to be more thoughtful and creative with the waste they produce.

This project is about training your eyes into compositions, as part of an IIT course called Visual Training I took during Fall 2013 semester. First we had to work with hand stamps, then go to raster compositions, then use the

geometry of what we did with our hands and then combine all these: hand, raster, vector however we wanted. These are my final compositions.

10/ Sofa Proposal Art Installation Canopy Design and Fabrication IIT College of Architecture Fall 2014 Location: Navy Pier, Chicago, IL, USA

In this project we are asked to propose the design of an urban furniture for the SOFA EXPO that would take place in Navy Pier during November 2014. The winning proposal would be actually built. The inspiration for my proposal was based on a bird flying and the movement of its wings into creating a parametric structure

that would move according to the needs. Each wooden section would be able to move and be converted into different angles and so provide different effect and use. This would be a transformable structure that could offer seating, exhibition space, storage space.

10/ Sofa Exhibition Art Installation Head of Drawings Team IIT College of Architecture Fall 2014 Location: Navy Pier, Chicago, IL, USA Professor: John De Salvo Group Project: 2nd year Graduate students

This project is about the SOFA Expo that we participated as a College of Architecture in Navy Pier. This is the design that was selected and I worked on the development of its design and the presentation drawings to the competition commitee. The main concept of the design is the use of triangular module out of which the chairs were designed. The chairs were made using the CNC machine and the canopy using folded paper. There was no need to use glue in the furniture as the pieces

would lock with each other. The canopy is another element of the project where origami patterns were used to fold the paper and create a dreamy feeling in the installation, like clouds above the heads of the people sitting on the chairs. The chairs and canopy were being thought as a composition that would create an interaction space for people to sit, what video, look at the ‘stars’ canopy above their heads.

This project is about a structural case study that would make us understand how the forces work in a project that achieved innovation in the way those are distributed. More specifically, as a team we decided to work with the Sony Center in Berlin, we did structural studies and built 4 models to become comfortable with the axial, bending, torsional and shear forces that travel along the roof of this magnificent structure. The roof made by Teflon-coated, fiber glass mesh and solid glass

This project is about designing a space for people in Trieste, a space that allows for many different events to take place. Depending on the needs and desires of the city the site can provide different configurations, thanks to the flexible hexagonal module which forms a grid throughout the whole site. There is some permanent structure

This project is about the city of Thessaloniki, which is looking for a new identity. Through this proposal we want to place the city back into the map with confidence and dynamism in order to regain its cosmopolitan, charming, creative breath. The street we had to focus on is Aghia Sophia, a historic street, due
