Master’s Thesis - Architectural restoration of Masseria Casalotto
Tr
Year: 2016 Place: Palermo, Italy Professors: Giovanni Fatta, Tiziana Campisi Collaboration: Giorgio Farina The project on Masseria Casalotto proposes the requalification of the ancient farm into a horse-related turistic complex, with a linked horse riding path. It is located in Piana degli Albanesi, a little village in the surrounding area of Palermo down the slope of the Kumena mountain, which foundation dates back to the XV century. The first stage of study was dedicated to an in-depht research the historical sources. In the second stage of the study, the current status of the farm has been analysed and reported, comprising the geometrical-dimensional and the material-constructive survey of the building with a detailed study of the material build-up analysis of the existing degradation conditions.

Hybrid Bulding
Hy
Year: spring 2015 Place: Madrid, Spain Professors: NicolĂĄs Maruri, Rafael Pina The project develops ah hybrid building n the centre of Madrid, Spain. This construction presents different uses of various nature and aims, mainly decay condition. The project concerns a hybrid building in the city centre of Madrid. The main purpose is to enhance the relation of the construction elements with the city. For this reason, the building shape is intended to fit with the surrounding environment. To achieve this, the different scales of approximation of the architectural scheme have been analysed. In its realisation, the complex is destined to have several uses. In particular, it has been thought to have a hall, an exhibition area, a cafeteria, a library, a multimedia area, offices, a gym, a auditorium and several residential hunits. The building structure is largely inspired to the BBVA tower in Madrid, realised by the architect SĂ enz de Oiza. Specifically, it presents a rectangular plan which structure sustains two platforms of PSC wires sustaining three other floors through a steel structure. Each level results in a diaphanous space with two central areas having function of both vertical and structural connection. Moreover, the building presents a opening strategy alongside its facade through which it is possible to glimpse the different activities inside the building. 20

Semi-detached House
Pr
Year: spring 2014 Place: Palermo, Italy Professor: Simona Colajanni Collaboration: Andrea Benincasa, Giorgio Farina, Massimo Macaluso The project represents a duplex located in Mondello, mostly known as the seaside of Palermo. In this case, the planning and technological choices of the project have been strongly influenced by the peculiar features of the area. The two dwellings, which are specular, present a rectangular plan nd elevate on two splitlevels. With respect to the urban legislation concerning the separation of the construction from the roadside and the adjacent plots, the proposed constructions stand on the middle of their PlotS. The buildings’ perimeter has been thus limited with the aim of creating an habitable external area. In plan, the constructions present both a central place destined to the following facilities: the ground floor to the daily activities, while the first floor to the night zone. The elements to represent this functional division can be identyfied in the openings, which are larger on the ground floor, but also from the choice of protection and of the cladding of the roofing: the former presents panels of fibre-reinforced cement, while the latter presents wooden planks. 24

Social Housing
Re
Year: autumn 2013 Place: Palermo, Italy Professor: Sebastiano Provenzano Collaboration: Andrea benincasa The Social Housing scheme was realised for the Sperone, a suburb of Palermo. This project has been thought as requalification of the area aiming to provide a better quality of life to its inhabitants. It presents a different variety of facilities, such as urban vegetable garden, sports area and spaces for social activities. The curved space on which the building develops follows the solar path allowing an optimal light exposure of all the residential units. The construction consists of a ‘multi-storey building with accesses from balconies’. Also, there are five vertical cores containing linking elements such as stairs and elevators. The nine different types of housing units come from the analysis of the iron framework on which the building was conceived. They result in units of different dimensions, including duplex. Being influenced by solar orientation, the position of the rooms results in the following pattern: the libving activities are oriented to the north, while the bedrooms are oriented to the south. 30

Sea’s Library
Pu
Year: spring 2013 Place: Palermo, Italy Professor: Antonino Margagliotta Collaboration: Andrea benincasa The library project is located in Bandita, a suburb on the coast of Palermo bay. In consideration of the previous decay of this part of the city, this project is ispired by the concept of living the coast and not neglecting it. With that in mind, the library lays on the shore. Its volume interacts with the diversified topography existing between the street and the shore. This game of heights culminates in a large terrace on the roof of the library. The hypogeum takes its shape from the terrain creating a concave figure that reminds the curve of seawater in shore. This curve is generated by a progressive flexion of the straight line defining the margin of the street of via Messina Marine that composes the delimitation of the construction. The project pays particular attention to the study of the light. It is evident from the horizontal succession of glazing allowing to light of the inner space. These lines repeat themselves according to the staircases and the long skylights. The presence of square breakwaters on the costal side is intended to fit the construction in continuity with its surroundings. 38
