The Brief was related to smart furniture solutions. The product was intended for inclusion in company’s catalogue, selected by the team, in our case Muuto. - TECH
BACKGROUND Until a few years ago, one-room flats were considered marginal in the real estate market, but recently there has been a growing interest in designing residential complexes consisting entirely of micro-apartments. These small spaces attract not only those living in expensive metropolitan cities such as New York, Hong Kong or London, but also have a promising market in other states and smaller cities. The categories most in need of this sector’s offerings are generally students, young workers and newly relocated workers.

DESIGN PROCESS
MY HOME SPACE
The project’s initial inspiration came from a simple image: pop-up books. Starting from this poetic idea, the team focused on the design of a modular system, in which the organisation can be managed by the user, offering a wide visual impact, as well as a useful and functional wall system.
01 02 03 04
PROTOTYPES Prototypes were made to study some of the attachment details between a section of the rack and the modules.
Product Design Portfolio
THE PRODUCT KHASSY Khassy was designed to give the user the possibility of organising a private and personal space, a compact microcosm, freely configurable in the context of the flat, which can be shared. Each module is equipped with a connection element that allows it to be interlocked with a double rack, fixed to the wall. The spacing between the racks allows shelves, panels and mirrors to be placed side by side, giving the user maximum freedom of configuration. The dual mechanism of the lamp also makes the lighting element ideal for providing either a directed or a more diffuse light.
The functional aspect does not want to transcend the scenic aspect, which is usually neglected by this category of products: in addition to container and support elements, there are accessories with an ornamental purpose, aimed at giving the space visual impact and character.

RESEARCH DYSMENORRHOEA? Isabella
Dysmenorrhoea is a condition that causes cramping pain localised in the lower abdomen that occurs with, before or after menstruation. It is highly disabling in terms of its impact on the quality of daily life during the menstrual cycle, affecting, according to the WHO, up to 81% of women and has been detected in 67-90% of 1724 year olds. In women under 20, the incidence is higher, at about 70%, with 50% abstaining from work or school.
In the research phase, statistics concerning the incidence of the pathology were evaluated. Based on the results of this analysis, a target group of 17 to 30-year-olds with primary or secondary dysmenorrhoea who wish to treat their pain symptoms using a non-pharmacological method was taken into consideration. On the basis of the data analysed, it was found that there is a need to effectively deal with the invalidating factors that this pathology generates. Women can be encouraged to continue their studies, go to work, and carry out normal daily activities despite being in an unfavourable physical condition, without giving in to the burden of pain that this pathology entails.
Description Isabella is 22 years old and a university student. She moved to Milan when she was 18 and now lives alone. She has recently been diagnosed with primary dysmenorrhoea.

She often stays at home, waiting for the pain to pass. The condition makes her feel insecure and frustrated.

DESIGN PROCESS
For HULA, soft shapes were considered, which can be easily positioned in different areas of the body. The small size allows users to wear the device in peace, carrying out normal daily activities with comfort. The absence of a single device capable of effectively resolving the main pain symptomatology for this pathology led to the evaluation of an intuitive form capable of suggesting use, adapting to multiple areas of the body.
The dimensions of the pad are designed to ensure that the electrostimulation covers a distance of 15 cm in the lower abdominal area, which can also be easily adapted to the wrist area.

THE PRODUCT HULA DEVICE The main symptoms, namely nausea and abdominal pain, were taken into account in the treatment of the condition and a nonpharmacological method was considered. Technological research has focused on TENS therapy, a non-invasive therapeutic method that is effective in reducing pain manifestations. In addition, some scientific research suggests that TENS can be used not only for pain management, but also to stop the emetic stimulus. In particular, the attention was focused on the Gate Control theory, according to which it is possible to stimulate the nerve fibres with a large diameter without affecting the others; at the level of the spinal cord, the inhibition of the fibres with a small diameter is activated and therefore the “pain pathway” is blocked towards the brain.
HOW IS IT MADE? The device is designed to be applied to the lower abdomen or wrapped around the wrist using a silicon band, a main device and PET pads. The device, made of ABS plastic, has been designed in three different colours, while the main device has only one colour. The conductive pads have a white surface on which a conductive film will be printed and on which there are hydrogel pads to adhere to the skin.

HOW DOES IT WORK? APP AND DEVICE The device has been designed to be associated with an App with which to manage the two available programmes. The app allows the user to choose the programme they need and modulate the intensity as they wish. For the MESTRUAL PAIN programme, the device values will have a maximum current output of 52 mA in 500 ohM, while for the NAUSEA programme, the maximum output is 60 mA in 500 ohM. The device will therefore have a maximum total output of 60 mA, equal to 30V.

VISUAL SEPARATION
In the research phase the team focused on the exploration and analysis of the “Working from Home” scenario in collaboration with the company MAGIS. Working from home has become a distinctive part of contemporary daily life. This chair was designed with the objective of ensuring visual and acoustic separation. Its characteristics of simplicity and comfort and the refinement provided by the soft volumes and materials are combined with the expressive language created by the use of colours.
The name Elfo comes from the main feature of this chair: the panel that offers a separate and reserved space. Ironically, the particular name recalls the shape and common imagery of elves with their large, beautiful ears.

THE PRODUCT One of the main features of Elfo is its flexibility to adapt to different social and working requirements. The panel that serves as an armrest and visual/ acoustic barrier is attached to the vertical frame at the back of the chair. The panel can be adjusted and moved into different positions using both hands to tilt it and slide it up or down smoothly while sitting. In this way the product is able to adapt to many different situations and types of spaces.

The project brief, supported by Jacuzzi® and Virgin Galactic, involved imagining a luxury Wellness Space Hotel that could offer unique experiences in zero gravity, combining comfort and beauty, as part of the Space4InspirAction course, the Space Design course supported by the European Space Agency (ESA). Despite all adversities and environmental characteristics, human beings have always been able to experience wonder and explore life through art. In the proposed concept, space is explored as the new dimension in which artists can create new experiences and live performance venues for travellers. A multi-sensory experience of water is explored, inviting to experiment with new weightless gestures, and the states of matter in space, having fun and observing the unique view of our planet in low gravity conditions, generating an unforgettable experience for space travellers.

THE WALLPAPER The Wallpaper Op Mirror was part of Prospect, the solo show by Vincenzo Marsiglia. The wallpaper features the distinctive sign, a module in the form of a star known as the Unità Marsiglia (UM), reproduced on complex surfaces using systems of summation and multiplication, transforming the architecture of the place where it is placed. In this project, I was in charge of dimensional evaluation, creative design for the wallpaper graphics and rendering pictures, now part of the Artist’ Catalogue.

INSTALLATION At the Carta Carbone Festival held in Treviso, Vincenzo Marsiglia’s installation WRAP #9 was presented, consisting of a central mirror and fluorescent and neon wood wires, which creates a transformation of the architectural space of the Loggia dei Mercanti. For this Installation I was in charge of the project concept in terms of its evaluation in the architectural space, from the dimensioning to the presentation of alternatives for the colors.
