What's Inside

Handheld Thermometers, page 4

Infrared Calibrator, page 12

For use as a reference standard or for precision data-logging applications, the models 1521 and 1522 are ideal instruments for any process calibration shop. Readout precision to ±0.005°C is attainable without programming or complex menus. Rugged reference PRTs are available, fully calibrated, and ready for installation.

If you use IR devices, you know they need to be calibrated regularly. Point all your pyrometers at the 9132’s blackbody target and check their accuracy to 500°C. You won’t find a unit this portable with such high-level performance. Industrial Dual-Block Calibrator, page 10

Handheld Dry-Well, –10°C, page 8

The smallest cold dry-well made is here. The 9102 reaches –10°C in less than 20 minutes and provides a very stable temperature environment for calibration below zero. With RS-232, the 9102 can automate your calibration work. Take this gem anywhere you need to!

We’ve combined a hot and a cold dry-well into one rugged unit. The 9009 is the perfect calibration solution for any process calibration shop that needs flexibility and a wide temperature range in one unit. It has a combined range from –15°C to 350°C and removable inserts to size the well to Handheld Dry-Well, 375°C, page 8 any temperature probe. Calibrate The handheld dry-well was invented transmitters quickly and efficiently by Hart. The 9100 is the smallest using both wells for zero and span dry-well with the power needed for adjustments. today’s process environments. It heats to 375°C in about 10 minutes with RS-232 interface and full micro-processor functionality. It only weighs one kilogram (two pounds, three ounces).

Precision Handheld Thermometers

Hart HT1521 and HT1522 Handheld Thermometers For the highest precision available in a battery-powered, handheld thermometer, trust Hart Scientific’s 1521 or 1522 to make your measurements. Featuring measurement accuracy to ±0.005°C, these readouts accept inputs from RTDs (including Pt100) or thermistors. With Hart’s INFO-CON connector (partially based on U.S. patent 5,857,777), there’s no need to program probe coefficients into the meter before taking readings. All data is stored in the INFO-CON and conveniently downloaded when connected to the 1521, making all types of probe assemblies interchangeable. The 1522 is not only a precision thermometer, but also a datalogger. Set the log interval and storage location on the multi-line display and log up to 10,000 readings on-board. Download logged data via RS-232 or IrDA with Hart’s 9934 LogWare software. When you absolutely need the best temperature readout, trust the Hart name.

Industrial Dual-Block Calibrator

There’s enough storage room inside the lid to keep your power cord and extra inserts. Everything you need fits right in the case.

In addition to the inserts that go into the four wells, four more may be stored here on the side.

The hot block provides stable temperatures from 35°C to 350°C, with maximum temperature achieved in under 10 minutes. Calibrate two sensors at once or use one well for a reference thermometer.

A Hart-designed temperature controller provides stabilities as low as ±0.05°C and calibrated accuracy to ±0.2°C. With two displays and two sets of control buttons, each block may be used independently. Each block comes with its own NIST-traceable calibration certificate.

The cold block runs in normal room temperatures from –15°C to 110°C. Each well is four inches deep and can accommodate inserts for probes from 1/16" to 3/8" in diameter.

Hart HT9009 Industrial Dual-Block Calibrator Hart’s new 9009 Industrial Dual-Block Calibrator lets you calibrate temperature probes from –15°C to 350°C. Each temperature well is independently controlled, so while you’re checking your transmitter sensor at one temperature, the other block can be heating or cooling to your next set-point.

An O-ring seal keeps your dual-block calibrator sealed from moisture and protected during transit.

Why Calibrate Temperature Devices?

I

n process control environments, temperature plays an important role. Most industrial processes rely on the performance of their RTDs (Pt100), thermocouples, and other temperature devices. As the need for precision measurements arises, so does the need to be absolutely sure that the readings are correct. If you can live with inaccurate measurements, then a discussion about calibration is moot. With physical and thermal stress, temperature devices drift from their original “in-tolerance” state. A regular verification of temperature measurement systems is necessary in orWith developments in dry-well der to maintain a high level technology, precision of confidence in the meatemperature calibration can be surements. Calibrations can performed in the field. be performed using a variety of methods; basic to any temperature calibration are heat sources and reference standards. A temperature heat source can be in the form of a fluid bath or a dry-block calibrator. Traditionally, calibration of temperature assemblies has been confined to laboratories due to the size of the calibration equipment. Calibration baths can be very difficult to move around the lab. With develop-

ments in dry-well technology, precision temperature calibration can be performed successfully in the field. Dry-wells are now made to fit snugly in your hand and precision of ±0.005°C can be achieved for calibration work. Dry-blocks accept a wide variety of sensors and are flexible in fit and form. Automation is now common to dry-wells so many factories are realizing substantial time and cost savings by automating their routine calibration work. Reference standards are also available now in handheld packages. Precision to ±0.005°C is attainable in battery-powered thermometers. This opens many doors to field calibration work that was traditionally available only in the laboratory. Precision secondary level RTDs are also making it possible to achieve previously unheard of uncertainties in the field. If you have a portable temperature application, Hart has a solution.

How to Select a Dry-Well

I

f you use industrial temperature sensors such as RTDs, thermocouples, or thermistors, then you need a dry-well calibrator that is capable of precision temperature calibration. When selecting the appropriate heat source for your process calibration needs, consider the following:

• • • •

Temperature Range Accuracy Stability Uniformity

Temperature Range The temperature range of the dry-well you select should meet your minimum temperature requirement for the sensor you are calibrating. Cold dry-wells usually have an upper limit of 150°C (or lower) and use solid-state cooling modules that are affected by ambient conditions. If you lower ambient, you can generally achieve lower block temperatures. Some manufacturers, when specifying the low range of a cold unit, offer data under very cold ambient conditions which misrepresent the actual attainable temperature under normal conditions. Be certain that the range from the dry-well doesn’t require earmuffs and gloves for the technician!

Accuracy The accuracy of a dry-well relates to the displayed temperature of the well as compared to a known calibrated reference temperature. Accuracy is dependent upon the controller’s ability to read the control sensor accurately and convert it to temperature. Off-the-shelf controllers are limited in their ability to linearize the control sensor’s input and are therefore limited in their display accuracy.

High performance controllers, like those made by Hart, offer top-end precision for process control applications.

Stability Stability is the temperature fluctuation of the instrument around the desired set-point over time. If the temperature well is not stable while performing calibrations, your results will not be very accurate. Because stability is a key factor in determining overall uncertainty of a dry-well calibrator, it is a specification that should not be overlooked. Probe Stability sets high-quality dry-wells Under apart from the me-too brands. When Test comparing dry-well manufacturers, make certain you select a brand that offers the best stability performance.

External Reference Thermometer Probe

Uniformity Temperature gradients exist in all dry-well units. Axial (vertical) gradients exist as heat escapes into ambient out the top of the well. Radial (horizontal or well-to-well) gradients are pronounced due to uniformity issues with the metal block temperature well. When performing comparison calibrations in a dry-block, select a dry-well that offers a uniformity within your error budget. Some manufacturers don’t offer uniformity as a separate specification. When comparing short stem sensors, immerse both probes at the same depth to minimize any vertical gradient effects (see drawing).

Short-stem sensors should be calibrated by comparison at the same depth when using a block calibrator.
