ColorPgae-EP
Introduction
1
Built-in SCSI Interface The ColorPage-EP flatbed color scanner includes a built-in SCSI interface, freeing you from the requirement of adding an external SCSI interface to your PC/AT . The ColorPage-EP flatbed color scanner works with IBM-PC/AT. For the PC, you may directly connect the scanner and PC with a 25-to-25 pin cable, there is no need a interface card any more.
Media Interface The ColorPage-EP flatbed color scanner supports a media connector in the back. This media interface is for use with optional attachments such as the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) or Light Panel Adapter. The ADF provides multiple-page scanning and significantly improves productivity for large scanning operations. The Light Panel Adapter allows you to scan transparencies and film. Consult your dealer for information on ADF and Light Panel Adapter models.

Scan Modes The digitized images output from the scanner contain up to 600 dots per inch of information from the original document. Dots can be represented by a single bit indicating black or white, by an 8-bit code indicating any one of 256 levels of gray, or by a 24-bit code indicating any one of over 16 million colors. The ColorPage-EP flatbed color scanner has these scanning modes: Single-bit mode
This mode lets you scan black-and-white material in line art or halftone mode. Line art is solid black and white, while halftone creates the illusion of gray with a pattern of black dots.
8-bit gray mode
This mode uses eight bits to represent the shading of the original document with up to 256 levels of gray.
24-bit (8-bit x 3) color mode
This mode reproduces any of 16.7 million colors. 24-bit color is achieved by using a piece of color CCD in combination with a daylight fluorescent lamp.
Error Detection and Self-test The ColorPage-EP flatbed color scanner features powerful error detection and self-diagnostic functions for maximum operating convenience.
Application Programs In your ColorPage-EP flatbed color scanner package, you will find a bundled software program for scanning your documents. To install application program, refer to the Genius ColorPage-EP Installation Guide.

If any component is missing, call Genius Sales and provide information on the missing component and part number. Please be ready to provide the scanner's serial number and your proof of purchase as well. Keep the Packing List for your reference in case you need to order a component in the future. Note:: If you need to ship back the scanner for any repairs, the scanner must be packed in the original box in which it came. Otherwise, Genius will not be responsible for any damage that may be sustained during shipping to or from Genius. You may be charged for a new box.
Checking the Voltage The voltage of the scanner is indicated at the back of the scanner near the power switch.

IBM PC Installation This chapter describes the requirements and installation for using your ColorPage-EP flatbed color scanner.
Requirements •
IBM-PC 486, Pentium, or compatibles with built-in plug-and-play BIOS system
•
16MB RAM
•
CD-ROM drive (internal or external)
•
Microsoft Windows 95, NT or Windows 3.1x
•
At least 40MB hard disk with 15MB free
•
VGA color monitor; color display card; laser printer (recommended). Photoshop requires a monitor and display card capable of displaying at least 256 colors.
Connecting the scanner to your computer Genius supplies a 25-to-25 pin cable to allow your computer to communicate with your scanner.
Make sure you turn off your computer and peripherals before connecting the 25-to-25 pin cable to your computer. 1. Turn off your computer and printer, and remove the parallel printer cable or any devices from computer's parallel port. IBM PC Installation

Operating the Scanner You need to install your scanner by performing the procedures we have discussed in the previous chapters. If your scanner is already installed, install scanner software that came with your scanner. Before doing it, refer to Genius ColorPage-EP Installation Guide, all of the information required to complete the software installation is here. This chapter shows you how to operate the scanner. You will learn the following: • • •
Performing the power-on self-test Positioning a document Starting to scan
Performing the Power-on Test The power-on test is a quick self-checking mechanism that the scanner carries out after you turn it on. This is what happens after the scanner is turned on: 1. READY indicator on the front panel of the scanner flashes briefly. After a 30-second warm-up period, the scanner carries out a self-test, with the scanner carriage moving back and forth about a half-inch. If no problems are detected, the READY indicator stays lit. Note: If there are problems with the READY indicator, see the Troubleshooting chapter of the manual. 3. The fluorescent lamp inside the scanner should be on too by this time. The lamp should never go off while the scanner is on. Note: If the scanner lamp doesn't come on, starts to flicker, or gets dim, see the section Lamp and Fuse Replacement in Chapter 5.
Basic Operating Procedures
13
Positioning a Document 1. Lift the document cover. 2. Place your document face down on the scanner glass. The top left corner of the document (when the document is held upright for normal reading) should be at the “0,0 position on the ruler guides running along side the scanner.
(0,0)
Scanning Thick Documents 1. Lift the scanner cover high enough so that there is enough room to place the document on the scanner glass. 2. Lower the scanner cover. You are now ready to start scanning.
14

Lamp and Fuse Replacement The lamp and fuse inside your scanner are not user serviceable. If the lamp does not come on, or it begins to flicker or dim after some time. The lamp or fuse should be replaced. If the lamp or fuse require replacement, call Genius technical support for further information. Do not attempt to replace the lamp and fuse yourself. The lamp replacement, we recommend only lamps supplied by Genius and available form your dealer for use in the scanner. Use of any other lamp may adversely affect scanning.
Using scanner accessories Your scanner is a powerful imaging device, but there are scanner accessories available that can enhance your scanning efficiency. These accessories include the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) and Light Panel Adapter. •
The Light Panel Adapter doubles the power of your scanner as it allows you to scan transparencies. Although 35-mm slides and filmstrips are not recommended due to their small size and lack of resolution, you can use the Light Panel Adapte to scan slides ranging from 35-mm slides and filmstrips to transparencies as large as 8" x 10".

•
The ADF simplifies the scanning processing as it allows you to scan up to 50 pages of text unattended and works with most popular Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software. Note:: The ADF can be used to scan text and graphics in black and white line art, halftone, or grayscale. It cannot be used to scan color images.

Troubleshooting When the scanner is turned on, the READY indicator should flash. The lamp will come on and should stay on all the time. A few seconds later, after the scanner’s self-test is completed, the READY indicator should shine steadily. Problems can usually be detected when the power is first turned on. This chapter concerns the most common problems and their solutions. ♦ POWER indicator fails to light up Turn the power switch off. Make sure that the scanner’s power cord is grounded and plugged into an AC outlet. Then, try turning on the power again. If the scanner indicator still fails to light up even when the scanner is plugged into an outlet which have been confirmed to have power, it’s likely that the fuse needs to be replaced. ♦ POWER indicator lights up but READY indicator fails to stop flashing This can be caused by • a faulty indicator • a faulty or loose lamp • detection of a malfunction during the scanner’s power-on selftest Try issuing the command to begin scanning; the software may report the solution to you.
Troubleshooting
21
♦ POWER and READY indicators light up but software returns “Scanner not ready” or similar message Make sure that both the Genius Scan Module and 25-to-25 pin cable have been set up properly. Note: There are no user serviceable ports in the scanner. Any repairs, including replacement of the fuse or lamp, must be made by a service technician. Call Genius for assistance.
