Striving To Relieve Hunger While the Thanksgiving feast is over and families are preparing and planning out their Christmas dinner, we must remember that not all our neighbors are as fortunate to sit down to an annual holiday meal. Several organizations around Charlotte, such as Loaves & Fishes, Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina and Community Food Rescue, strive to relieve hunger in our area while providing nutritious options to those in need. Anytime is always a good time to help out. Read below to find information on who these organizations are and how you can be a part. Loaves & Fishes Loaves & Fishes began in 1975 when a group of people in the Charlotte community recognized the growing hunger needs of those right here in our area. A single food pantry was opened in an effort to help alleviate those needs. In the first year, Loaves & Fishes fed 1,000 people. Since then, the nonprofit organization has grown to 19 pantries throughout Mecklenburg County and in 2011; Loaves & Fishes provided groceries to 114,117 people.

Yet, this organization is not a food bank but rather an assistance program created to meet emergency food needs brought upon by a crisis situation. Each recipient of Loaves & Fishes services is carefully screened and then provided with a week’s worth of groceries. Nutrition is a key factor in determining what items are provided to families. Groceries include items such as cereal, canned ravioli, vegetables, fruit, fresh meat, yogurt, eggs, and cheese. Personal care items are also given such as toothbrushes, soap and toilet paper. While Loaves & Fishes operates with a small staff, over 700 volunteers help to do the majority of the work. To find out how you can help, donate, or for more information on assistance from Loaves & Fishes, contact the staff at 704.523.4333 or at info@loavesandfishes.org. LoavesAndFishes.org Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina Since 1981, Second Harvest has worked to alleviate hunger throughout the Metrolina area. As the largest hunger relief charity in the area, Second Harvest distributes food to those in need in 19 counties. Yet, the organization has many programs aimed to get the food in the right places. Kids CafÊ is a childhood hunger initiative in which Second Harvest partners with agencies involved in child hunger programs to provide nutritious meals and snacks. Operating 37 Kids Cafes in 10 counties, Second Harvest is working to have these sites in all 19 counties within the next five years. Mobile Pantry is another great program designed to deliver food to rural areas where the poverty rates tend to be higher. These specially equipped trucks can deliver between 5,000 and 10,000

33

pounds of food in a single trip. In fiscal year 2009-2010, the mobile pantries delivered over 2.2 million pounds of food and served over 93,200 people. Second Harvest offers many other programs, such as Junior Chefs, Five-a-Day and Disaster Relief, to help those in need. The nonprofit has also been involved in several events in the past to help raise funds, such as Taste of the Panthers, Street Turkeys, Empty Bowls and Chef’s Best. To lend a hand, host a food drive or to make a donation, visit Secondharvestmetrolina.org and find the branch closest to you.  SecondHarvestMetrolina.org Community Food Rescue Community Food Rescue may not ring a bell to you, but is still a key player in working to eliminate hunger in our community. The mission of the Community Food Rescue is to collect donations of surplus fresh and cooked food from bakeries, restaurants and other eateries and to distribute the items to charitable organizations, such as Second Harvest and Loaves & Fishes, to help feed people in need. The non-profit believes that in a world of abundance, hunger should not exist and we can join together in the fight against hunger, as well as food waste. Like most organizations, volunteers and food donors are always in need. You can contact them at 704.342.3663 to find out how you can get involved. Dining Editor, Nikki Wilson

Charlotte is getting FitByePharr… For years, if not decades, the country has been facing an “obesity epidemic” in which a surging rise in poor weight management has been noticeable throughout the nation and now the world. Obesity is the leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with the United States possessing the highest rates of obesity in the developed world. Nutrition management and exercise are the two most relevant interventions in the management of obesity. No less did this get noticed than on our own door step, by Charlotte’s own Jamar Pharr and John Bye, founders and co-owners of FitByePharr. As college friends at Charlotte’s own Johnson and Wales University, Jamar and John both identified with prior experiences of weight issues in their younger years and successfully made strides toward their fitness goals through commitment to exercise and healthy eating. Their personal journeys would eventually culminate in a reunion of two college buddies and the birth of FitByePharr in 2011. Now business colleagues and founders of Charlotte’s newest and fastest growing training studio, they hope to change the game on the local fitness scene.

Approaching their one year anniversary since opening, FitByePharr’s passion on Charlotte’s fitness and personal training scene is energized by the two young owners’ drive for helping others in their exercise and health goals. An open concept facility, their gym features a focus on personalized/small group training and challenging functional exercise. The equipment is in immaculate condition, including kettle bells, free weights, TRX suspension training and mats, among other useful supplies. They stress that guidance and proper execution on form are key, while maintaining a fun and energetic approach. Clients begin with the facility’s “Polar Body Age” health and fitness assessment equipment. This technology allows for testing markers of health and fitness status including body fat composition, body measurements, upper and lower body strength, core performance, flexibility, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) and aerobic capacity, stress levels and nutritional habits. From there, keeping their clients focused on the longer term goals and benefits are fundamental, both founders agree. Their gym’s philosophy predicates on a commitment to “inspiring, motivating and changing the lives of Charlotte residents.” FitByePharr focuses also on corporate wellness programs, kid/ youth fitness, and nutrition consultation. Corporate wellness programs can include fitness consultations, exercise designs and educational promotion to achieve a healthier, more productive work group. From their own personal stories, Bye and Pharr feel strongly about their drive to tackle the disturbingly fast spread of childhood obesity. Both are open to admit that their current fitness levels were not always what they are today, and they had to work hard over time to avoid being chronically overweight, and to reach their fitness goals. This is the message they continue to pass on to local community youth. The pair focuses on community outreach events and offers group/kid fitness seminars and classes. Though a seemingly challenging task, the duo is relentless in ensuring that local Charlotte youth realize that exercise and healthy nutrition are a lifestyle choice, not simply a chore or repetitive task. Pharr and Bye focus on the First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s

37

Move! campaign. The Let’s Move! initiative focuses on enhancing active lifestyles and healthy eating through community involvement, including but not limited to schools, parents, and healthcare providers. Bye and Pharr recognize exercise’s impact on concentration, school performance, but perhaps most importantly, on self-esteem and confidence. The gym has also teamed up with TNT Nutrition company (Total Nutrition Technology), in recognition of the major role that nutrition plays in achieving fitness/wellness goals. TNT helps FitByePharr to provide a complete nutritional assessment and to develop client-specific dietary plans and education. The goals of TNT nutrition can include weight loss, health management and sports performance. All products associated with FitByePharr are nutrient rich with organic, whole food coming from natural sources. Jamar Pharr and John Bye remarked, “Some of our goals to reach by the end of the year are to continue to grow our brand and client base. We want to continue to create and offer new and exciting

38

programs so that we can stay competitive and give clients more options. Our goal is to make fitness as fun and exciting as possible so that our potential clients will stay on the path of a healthy lifestyle and encourage others to make the change as well. We want to put Charlotte on the map to be the most FIT city, and not known for only banking!” Fitness Editor, Ryan Shum

Jamar Pharr and John Bye are college buddies from Charlotte’s own Johnson and Wales University. Although Bye was originally from Chicago and Pharr briefly relocated to sunny Miami to work with the Miami Heat and Dolphins, both reunited in the Queen City to start FitByePharr. John Bye is a certified personal trainer through the American Council on Exercise and will soon also become a Certified Lifestyle and Weight Management Coach. Jamar Pharr is a certified personal trainer through the WITS Certified Personal Training Program and the National Personal Training Institute. FitByePharr is easily located in Charlotte at 201 W. Morehead St – Suite 300, Charlotte, NC 28202, 704-375-0220. Jamar and John can be reached at their gym through info@fitbypharr.com as well. The Best hing Worst T

It’s nothing. I’m sure it’s just a benign cyst. I’ve had lumps in my breast before and they were always fine. I was wrong. When they want to do a core biopsy the same day as your mammogram you start to worry. The test results take a few days and it’s agony. What if? What if I have cancer? What if it’s really bad? Am I going to die? I was diagnosed with breast cancer on June 5, 2012. After an especially difficult week Jim asked me if I wanted to write an article about my breast cancer for Elevate Lifestyle magazine. I said yes not knowing what I wanted to say or what to really tell other women. There’s so much to know. There’s a blur of doctor appointments and tests. They needed to stage the cancer and figure out the best treatment. They needed to see if it had spread or was still contained. I needed to wrap my head around what was happening - I went in thinking it was just a cyst – now what? What do I do next? The Presbyterian Cancer Center has provided great guidance. I am fortunate to have a “Nurse Navigator” who has helped me make sense of the process and has been a good guide along this very interesting adventure. Nurse navigators are nurses assigned to a cancer patient after their diagnosis. My Nurse navigator has made a world of difference for me and has been a valuable resource and source of support. Self-Exam and Mammogram – not words you should be afraid of when it comes to breast cancer. I found my lump through a self-exam. I have a fast growing cancer and if I had waited until my mammogram the lump would have been much bigger and my diagnoses would have been different. Jim and I made our treatment decisions quickly. We got a second opinion. I had surgery to check my lymph nodes and a port put in my chest for chemotherapy 2 weeks after diagnoses. Chemo43

therapy started the next week. I refer to this summer as my “chemo adventure”. Not the adventure I was looking for this year, but the one that was chosen for me. While sitting in the chemo treatment room what I’ve noticed is that breast cancer is not just a disease of older woman. Most of my “chemo buddies” are under 45. These women either had the breast cancer gene or had found the lump themselves and gotten it checked out. What this tells me is that younger women need to be more diligent in doing self-exams and knowing their family history. It’s scary I know. But it’s a lot less scary when you catch it early and get treatment. I have told many people that being diagnosed with breast cancer is the best worst thing that has ever happened to me. I have certainly learned a lot about myself. I’ve been blessed with wonderful support and a husband who has held on to me tightly and has made sure I am taken care of at all times. I am grateful for excellent doctors, a great family and good friends. There have been lots of hurdles to overcome during treatment. I came across a quote that pretty much sums things up for me. “The difference between fear and excitement is your attitude about it.” I’m a fighter and I know I am going to come through this and be healthy again. My 8th round of chemo is October 3rd. From there we move on to surgery and then radiation. So there’s still a long road ahead for me. Do me a HUGE favor – do a self-exam after you read this. Encourage your friends to do the same. Don’t be afraid – it’s the best thing you can do for yourself. Mari Merrill is the wife of photographer Jim Merrill and an integral part of JMT Photography.

Holiday Gift Guide

Track Your Performance and Fitness into the New Year Sticking to your fitness goals this holiday season is important; if you have a fitness-minded wish list for your holiday gifts, this may help with some ideas on essential items that can track your fitness performance going into the New Year. Like good accounting or financial management, it is important and helpful to regularly track your physical performance to ensure you are not in the middle of a training plateau and are on the road to reaching your goals for race/game day and beyond. Objective measurement and data tracking trumps all other subjective estimations. It also provides a consistent source of motivation. Record and keep your results visible somewhere to inspire you and keep you focused. Here are two simple holiday gift ideas for the fitness minded reader who wants to have some fun tracking their progress. Included are two straight forward running tests that gauge cardiovascular fitness and also speed/quickness.

Speed/Agility Cones $1.95 each Power-Systems.com Some of these are water and shock resistant, which is recommended, as accidental drops may happen. Regardless, the main function is to track time and preferably with a split and recall function when you perform multiple test reps or are doing fitness tests with other training partners. SportLine Timer/Stopwatch Price: $16 to $40 (watch) spri.com The Sprint Running Test (Speed Test) This test will measure peak acceleration and velocity in your ability run for short distances. Many sports require this including lacrosse, football and basketball: point being getting to a location or destination fastest and first. Sprinting tests muscle performance of the fast twitch fibre variety. This refers to sections of muscle which are designed for high performance but shorter bursts of duration. Ideally on a flat, track surface (and with the aid of another person), apply a starting line marker and you can measure out distance increments of 10 metres or yards (i.e. 30, 40, 50 ‌etc) The distance can be changed depending on what event you are training for (such as being a speed demon to run the bases

57

in baseball or kickball). The longer the distance you test for (i.e. above 100 yards or metres) can tell you how good your “speed endurance” is, referring to how well you can keep up your speed during longer runs (think deep route football receivers or running backs/punt returners). In an ideal setting (like the NFL combine), timing gates would be most accurate but assuming you do not have access to that; this is where cones, plus a good stop watch are key. To simplify, begin at the starting line in a stationary position without a rocking motion. Sprint on command from your timer and you can repeat reps (with rest in between) to establish an average of scores. Digital tracking gates would be ideal, but this is a low tech (and fun?) way to see how fast you are becoming. Some data suggests these are good values to have for the 35 metre run (in seconds). Males – average = 5.10-5.29 s, good = 4.85.09, Females – average =5.60-5.89 s, good = 5.30 – 5.59 s. 2.4 k/1.5 mile Run Test (Aerobic capacity) A fairly simple test; measure a distance of 2.4 km or 1.5 miles on either a flat or challenging terrain surface. The total run time to finish the distance is measured. Be sure to be consistent to use the same surface when you re-test. Some reasonable data values include: males – fair = 14:00-12:01, excellent = 10:45 – 9:45, females – fair = 18:30-15:55, excellent = 13:30-12:20 In summary, be sure to test at regular intervals, always perform a warm up and cool down. A stop watch and speed cones should definitely be on your list of fitness items for the holiday wish list. If you are uncertain about any procedures, be sure to consult a licensed/certified health or fitness professional. I welcome any suggestions or further ideas on fitness tests, equipment or gifts you find useful and fun. Happy Holidays and happy training! See you in the New Year.

Gifts for Her?

The KelVaughn Collection can help! Who doesn’t love to be an original? I honestly cannot think of one woman who says‌I want exactly what she has. Ladies love to be the center of attention or recognized for their own style and flair. This Holiday season give her something unique and original with The KelVaughn Collection original, one of a kind jewelry.

Be the kind of guy that didn’t buy her the same old thing. The one that put thought into his gift. Don’t be the bum with the blender or the flake who ordered eflowers; you can be the hero and make it easy on yourself by visiting the website KelVaughn.com . She won’t have what every other girl got, because each piece is hand crafted and no two pieces are alike. Like that body necklace? Why not add a cuff bracelet? The options are endless! Your wife, girlfriend or sister can rock it day or night, to work or after work. She will find just about anything to wear with her jewelry and not the other way around. This new, exciting line just isn’t any old jewelry collection; it was premiered at this year’s Charlotte International Fashion Week as the first ever jewelry segment to be debuted at CIFW. Designer Kellee Vaughn is a Queen City native who has a passion to make people look and feel as beautiful outside as they are within. She is an experienced Professional Hair Stylist, make up artist, and wardrobe Stylist who’s worked in Fashion shows, music videos and photo shoots. She clearly has an eye for style and it’s no wonder people are clambering to get their hands on her one of a kind jewelry pieces. The KelVaughn Collection was at first not a collection at all, but a hobby to help

73

Designer Kellee get through one of the most difficult times in her life after losing her Mother, her best friend to cancer in January 2011. The following Mother’s Day was heartbreaking for Kellee and she made sure the next Mother’s day, she’d be better prepared for it by remaining busy throughout the day. So she began designing jewelry for herself that she loved to wear. She made body chains (unique necklaces for your body!), cuff bracelets and earrings, that she alone would wear to work at her salon. After an overwhelming response from her clients, strangers and passersby Kellee had the idea to sell select pieces in her salon and she couldn’t keep any on the shelf! Definitely a win win! Want to find out where you can get started? Visit KelVaughn.com today! Happy hunting and have a healthy, happy holiday this season! Contributor Writer, TekaRose
