publisher’s note I hope everyone had an awesome Labor Day weekend; no matter where you were, I hope it was enjoyable. With the cooler weather here, now come some great outdoor events, the first in a series of fashion events is Fashion’s Night Out. Fashion’s Night Out, which will be Thursday, September 9, is a national event that celebrates fashion, restores consumer confidence, boosts the industry’s economy and puts the fun back in shopping. Here in Charlotte there are many national retailers and local boutiques that will be hosting their own events. Two that stand out the most are at The Metropolitan and at BUTTER, at the NC Music Factory. The créme de la créme of fashion events is coming up the week of September 19. Elevate Lifestyle has teamed up with Charlotte Seen to put on Charlotte Seen Fashion Week. It will be six days of fashion and style, and certainly six days to remember. We kick the week off at The Ritz Carlton on Monday; then Tuesday will be at Del Frisco’s, Wednesday at Vivace, and the runway shows will be at Gateway Village on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. This entire issue is dedicated to Charlotte Seen Fashion Week; you will be able to get a glimpse of who and what will be seen walking down the runway as well as who all are involved. If you are a fashion guru, this is one issue you won’t want to put down. Once you do, you can go to CharlotteSeenFashionWeek.com to purchase your tickets. To see all that’s going on in Charlotte, you can always go ElevateLifestyle.com to be in the know. Have a great month, Steve Caldwell

for whom the bells toll... Q&A With Cyrus Peterson, Carolina’s Authority On Kettlebell Training What is Advanced Training Concepts? Advanced Training Concepts is a fully equipped training facility and the premier Kettlebell Lifting facility in Charlotte. The foundation of Advanced Training Concepts programs is building functional strength, speed, power, flexibility, coordination, and endurance through Kettlebell Lifting, Olympic Weightlifting, body weight exercises, and other modalities. What is the advantage of lifting a kettlebell as opposed to a dumbbell? The Kettlebell has several features that make it quite unique as a weight. The U-shaped handle: Most things that we grasp or lift in day-to-day life mimic this same shape. Rarely do we ever pick up or grasp an object that has a perfectly straight, round, easy-to-grip handle, from a book bag, purse, steering wheel, door knob, door handle, grocery bag, toolbox, the collar of a martial arts gi, gun handle, a water hose, a rope, a child’s arm as he/she unknowingly runs into the path of traffic. As a result, Kettlebell Lifting develops the muscles of the hands and arms in a way that “biceps curls” and other body building exercises cannot. The body of the Kettlebell is round and its center of gravity offset which adds to the complexity of balancing and controlling it. This further engages

musculature that you would not activate using a dumbbell. The dynamic nature of the Kettlebell Lifts in conjunction with its shape, offset center of gravity, and U-shaped handle transform it into a “live” weight when lifted properly and for it’s intended purpose, timed sets. It requires total concentration and a complete integration of the body and mind. The proprioceptive demands of the movements make it a workout not only for the body but the Central Nervous System and mind as well. All aspects of the posterior chain are thoroughly engaged due to the dynamic and ballistic nature of the Kettlebell Lifts. The Glutes, Hamstrings, Quads and musculature of the hip all receive special attention. The Entire musculature of the Torso; Trapezius, Rhomboids, Deltoids, Biceps, Triceps, Spinal Erectors, Lats, Abdominals and Obliques must all work in a synergistic manner to execute the skillful movements of Kettlebell Lifting. The Heart, and Lungs and all energy systems are taxed during a high intensity timed set. Kettlebell Lifting creates an Oxygen Debt and Calorie expenditure equal to uphill Cross Country Skiing! What is the A & O program? In 2008, I began instructing Kettlebell Lifting specifically. Since that time I have experimented with several methods of orientating a beginner to Kettlebell Lifting. I quickly discovered that it took 16 weeks or more for a beginner to learn the rudimentary technique required. It was a very frustrating process for many. Just by providing the Assessment and Orientation I was able to drastically reduce that time to between 6 and 8 weeks on average. The Assessment and Orientation is one-on-one instruction and acts as a “jump start” to begin the process of learning and adapting to the training regimen. It is the prerequisite course to begin any of our training programs and also gives an introduction to the facility and the methodology of Kettlebell Lifting. All the fundamental Kettlebell Lifts are instructed as well as body weight exercises, and mobility protocols specific to our way of training. There is also motor skill analysis and non-intrusive body composition testing performed to establish a baseline to measure future progress. What are the different programs you offer? There are several class options mornings, afternoons, and evenings, 6 days per week. All classes can accommodate any level. All classes are

21

focused primarily on Kettlebell Lifting but utilize other modalities such as Olympic Weightlifting, calisthenics, and different forms of conditioning. Who trains at ATC? Our membership is composed of a diverse group of men and women of varying ages. This includes athletes such as cyclists, triathletes, marathon runners, martial artists, kayakers, rock climbers, skiers, swimmers, etc, in addition to members who are just beginning to adopt a lifestyle of strength, fitness, and athletic performance. I noticed you have some great testimonials and before and after photos on your website. How long does it take to see results like this? Most people lose weight fairly quickly who attend at least 2 times per week. The calorie expenditure from Kettlebell Lifting can be really high. It can reach up to 22 calories per minute in an experienced lifter. Strength is also developed rather quickly as compared to conventional weightlifting. Kettlebell Lifting is very ballistic in nature and requires total integration of the bodies energy systems and muscles. It is really hard NOT to get in great shape given the way we train. What is your fitness back ground Cyrus? I am a Fitness Professional with over 20 years of experience in various forms of weightlifting and fitness. I am a continuing education provider for the National Academy of Sports Medicine and hold the NASM – Performance Enhancement Specialist designation. I also hold the following: • Certified Kettlebell Teacher through the International Kettlebell and Fitness Federation (IKFF, a leading body in functional integrative training) • Certified Kettlebell Lifting Coach by The World Kettlebell Club (WKC, the international governing body for kettlebell sport) • KBC Advanced Level Kettlebell Instructor • USA Weightlifting Sports Performance Coach • Master Trainer (National Federation of Professional Trainers) I am also a competitive Kettlebell athlete myself and practice Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a hobby . I started Advanced Training Concepts in 2008 with a goal of creating a unique training environment where the focus is on help-

22

ing people to reach their fitness goals through athletic development. You can also certify personal trainers as Kettlebell Instructors? Yes, I am a World Kettlebell Club Master Trainer, one of a handful that can actually certify fitness professionals through the WKC Fitness Trainer Certification Course. Although the course is highly beneficial to any fitness professional, non-professionals may also attend. The WKC is an international certification and recognized by all major personal training certifying bodies. You mentioned that you are a Kettlebell Athlete, what exactly is that? Kettlebell Lifting has been a sport since the 1700’s, practiced mostly in Eastern Europe. In 1948, it was officially made a sport by the former Soviet Union government. Most recently in 2008, Kettlebell Lifting was featured in the International Olympic committee recognized TAFISA World games (held in Korea) and will also be included in the TAFISA World Games in 2012. There is growing support and interest to include Kettlebell Lifting as an Olympic Sport! In the US, small competitions began in the early 2000’s and have continued to grow. This year, on Oct 29th, the largest US Kettlebell Lifting competition will be held in Chicago, The World Kettlebell Lifting Championships. ATC has a team and will be competing in this competition. That’s awesome! So, what does the sport entail? Kettlebell Sport is three lifts: Long Cycle – The act of swinging one or two kettlebells between the legs and bringing them to the chest in the Rack position, then lifting the kettlebells above the head. The Snatch - The act of swinging one kettlebell between the legs and bringing it above the head

23

in one movement without pressing. The Jerk – The act of lifting one or two kettlebells above the head from the chest and back again. All of these lifts are performed for 10 minutes without setting the kettlebells to the floor or resting them on the shoulders. If the lifter sets the kettlebells down or rests them on the shoulders, the set is stopped, and the lifters performance is finished. A judge counts or discounts the lifter’s repetitions as he/she lifts. The lifter must achieve a specified number of repetitions in accordance with the lifter’s weight class and specific technical criteria. Women generally compete with one kettlebell, a 16kg (35 pounds) or a 24kg (53 pounds) and Men typically compete with two 24kgs (106 pounds) or two 32kgs (141 pounds), however, the WKC does allow competition with lighter bells to allow beginners a safe progression within the sport. Oh wow, so this definitely isn’t like the kettlebell training that I’ve seen in exercise dvds? Hahaha, definitely not! We focus on real strength and conditioning! The kettlebell is only a tool. Without proper instruction, technique, and programming, results are low, and potential for injury can be high. Last Question: You mentioned competition, is that mandatory? Not at all. Our team members compete of their own volition. They love Kettlebell Sport and generally have competed in other athletics before. The majority of our members are simply interested in getting in great physical condition and reaping the benefits of it. So where can we learn more about Advanced Training Concepts? At www.advancedtrainingconcepts.com

While in Tampa she worked with Life Care, an organization that helps rehabilitate women who are faced with unplanned pregnancy or domestic abuse situations. Courtney doesn’t be-

28

lieve you have to “choose your role – you can have it all!” In a recent interview she stated “Being a good mother, wife and having a successful career is all about balance, character, priorities and who you surround yourself with. Keep pushing yourself to be better, take a deep breath under pressure and you will always rise to the occasion” She began in media at the age of 21 working at an agency outside Charlotte as an assistant to the VP. There she got the sales bug and when her husband relocated to Tampa, FL she decided to try the sales end of advertising and set out to find a position with a local broadcast television station. Very lucky to have a great mentor and friends who pushed and taught her how to make it in sales she progressed to another station in Tampa owned by the media giant Hearst-Argyle. “Working for that station was the best part of my career – honestly. The management and people there I will remember forever.” There her skills were refined and she excelled by earning the Hearst Eagle Award in 2009. Soon thereafter her husband was transferred back to his home state of North Carolina and she began at a local Network affiliate. “There was always a lack of creativity in what I did – I was missing that element of completion and satisfaction. I set out on a goal – I worked hard and reached that goal but still wasn’t happy –I knew I needed a change” Courtney was introduced to Rita Miles through a mutual friend. She has always had a passion and “the eye” for creating a beautiful home and thrived on parties to fill her house with her cherished friends and family. “Rita thought I was coming in to talk about sales/event planning with Charlotte Seen and I thought I was coming in to talk about Interior Design for Miles Interiors.” She said laughing. After about 10 minutes she knew she had met her new mentor. Rita hired her in April and she is currently a designer with Miles Interiors and an Event Coordinator/Sales Manager with Charlotte Seen.

29

“I am a type –A perfectionist from Dallas who loves design and throwing parties – if this isn’t my perfect job I don’t know what is!” When she started telling her friends and family about her new ventures the response was unanimous and overwhelming…….”Finally! What took you so long?!” “I am very excited about what the future holds – Charlotte better watch out – Rita and I are about to turn this city into a gorgeous star studded cocktail party! Perry’s at SouthPark’s “Soiree of Style” held on Tuesday, September 20 and benefitting Monarch will bring SouthPark into the fash-

ion week mix by paying tribute to all of the styles that have made fashion what it is today in prestigious Del Frisco’s. An intimate cocktail reception at Vivace- Metroplitan on Wednesday, September 21 will benefit Project HALO while guests are invited to “Meet the Designers” and learn their story beyond the clothes and the runway. The next three evening will be held at Gateway Village which is located at 800 W. Trade Street. All three evenings will benefit Right Moves for Youth. On Thursday, September 22 is “Peoples Choice Awards” which begins at 6 p.m. for the VIP Hour and at 7 p. m. for general admittance. The PEOPLE’S CHOICE is the runway show that focuses on Charlotte’s undiscovered talent! These participating emerging artists -- Amber Johnson, Miikelle DeFo, Anno Domini, and Fashenelle -- will each display six to 10 pieces of their collections that night. They will be competing against the other local emerging artists for a chance to win the grand prize! The audience will have the opportunity to vote for their favorites of the show through text-in and live voting. This is definitely putting power to the people and elevating these emerging designers to deliver their most beautiful and best! They will not be alone though; also on Thursday night we are welcoming our core fashion designers that reside right here in the Queen City: Deanette Edwards with Angelina Bohemia, Odelia Rose, and AugustBrandon. The emerging artists will have the opportunity to converse and observe with the likes of those who have shown in Paris, Milan, Spain, New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Toronto.

33

On Friday, September 23 is “The Re-Model Show” which begins at 6 p.m. for the VIP Hour and at 7 p. m. for general admittance. The RE-MODEL SHOW is where Interior Design and Construction come to the body. By utilizing the talents of our Charlotte local artists – some discovered and undiscovered -- we “go green” by taking materials and re-using, recycling and re-fashioning them into beautiful pieces of couture to walk the runway. Items that have been re-used in the past include roof shingles, paint brushes and drop cloths, fabric and textiles, plastic garbage bags, paper bags, plastic bottles, glass, tile, aluminum, CDs, foil, and the list goes on and on! By taking these pieces and re-using them, we gain a certain earth consciousness while giving the artists the ability to break outside the mainstream fashion design rule … from discarded to divine! The show will feature 20 local Charlotte RE-MODEL designers taking their creativity and making one-of-a-kind pieces that will be remembered for years to come. As of our print date we had the following RE-MODEL designers: Lia Baldwin with Bentala Salon, April Workman, Erika Diamond, Terri Reeves, Sidney Robertson, Monique Luck, Chrsitine Cook, Andre Jarrid, Domartius, A Hoke/Beacon Hill and Robert Allen, Michelle McAllister, Mahohany Jones, Matthew Sherlock, Shay Shelton, April Reich, Terry Reimer, Racine Davis, Kadra Aden “Anino,” Rachael Cobb, Davita Galloway, The Sleepy Poet, Odelia Rouse, Kitchy Cool Vintage, and DonRai/Donna Rai. The grand final night is Saturday, September 24 and is titled the “MILES OF IMPACT RUNWAY SHOW” which begins at 6 34

p.m. as well for the VIP Hour and at 7 p. m. for general admittance. The MILES OF IMPACT show is THE ONLY runway event that highlights Charlotte’s biggest and brightest! Saturday evening is when everyone gets to shine! To start the evening, there will be three established fashion designers based out of Charlotte: Amanda Wagner, Luis Machicao and Tara Davis. Following that show is a wonderful collaboration of Charlotte’s own talent and business elite in the most star-studded runway you will see in the Queen City. MILES OF IMPACT features Charlotte celebrities and personalities in all areas including but not limited to NASCAR, football, baseball, basketball, television news, radio, politics, and business. This amazing group of people will be dressed by these participating Charlotte boutiques: Runway Studio, Bevello Phillips Place, Apricott Lane, Bruce Jillian, Sunglass Hut, Sweet Repeats, Morris Costumes, Tommy Bahama, Banana Republic, Coplons, Brooks Brothers, LA East, Paul Simon, Black and Blue, Joey Hewell, and Belk. charities Established in November 2003 by Kristy AdamsEbel, CBF is a non-profit organization committed to uniting and helping women with breast cancer in all stages of survival. The organization centers around those who want to create a social and educational outlet for women united in a sisterhood of survival and hope. Diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32, Kristy recognized that part of her ability to cope with the struggle she faced depended on communing with fellow survivors. She understood the importance of being in a positive setting where the focus was on healing, self-exploration, and empowerment through knowledge. Until her death in 2006, Kristy’s determination, selflessness, and humor remained as strong as ever. She was, and is, an inspiration to everyone at Carolina Breast Friends. Get to know each designer a little more and then make contact to get your custom-made outfit today. Amanda Wagner, Amanda Wagner Designs How did you get started? I was first introduced to the world of Fine Art as a young child and was supplied with a broad spectrum of artist materials. I began using Fashion Plates -- a mixand-match drawing toy used to teach young aspiring fashion artists how to draw and coordinate fashion design. Art lessons and techniques were gleaned from my mother and older siblings. I also learned to appreciate a love for fashion growing up with her mother and older sister having been runway fashion models. How long have you been in the fashion industry? 10 years What type of fashion do you focus on? I focus on Women’s Wear -- mostly gowns and separates with skirts, tops and jackets. My work is art meeting the human form.

Who is the clientele you are going after? Middle-market to high-end clientele, women ages 18 to 35. What inspires your designs? My designs depict art meeting the human form. They present a modern reinvention of classic retro silhouettes that explore the elements of line, color and nature. Do you have any fashion shows coming up in the near future beside Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? I am creating gowns and swimsuits for the 2011 Miss Charlotte USA competition in November. One of the hottest fashion items for Spring 2012 would be hue -- white-white hot that is. I am using a lot of white against black in jersey knits that form and drape down the body creating elegant angel-like floating figures. What is your fashion or design motto? As Chanel stated, “Fashion fades, only style remains.” I like to stick with the pros -- why reinvent the wheel? Danette edwards, Angelina Bohemia How did you get started? I have always been a natural born entrepreneur. I started my first business at age 17 and the Purple Picket Furniture Company at 24, which became Charlotte’s most well-loved and known furniture store. With crossroads in life and changes in the economy, you must always be ready for new challenges; you must always be ready to re-invent yourself. How long have you been in the fashion industry? We have been working on this project for almost two years. We have just launched the product at the Magic show in Las Vegas for market. We have had an overwhelming response to our product and shoe line. The shoe line will be in major department stores and boutiques next fall. Things don’t happen overnight. It takes years of preparation and a lot of research. What type of fashion do you focus on? As of now we are women’s footwear. Our current focus is women’s boots. Who is the clientele you are going after? Our target market ranges from the age of 21 to 45. Our product is innovative, functional and fashion forward. What inspires your designs? Inspirations can come from anywhere. You have to open your eyes and take note of what’s around you. Look and see what other designers in the industry are doing. Do you have any fashion shows coming up in the near future besides Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? Fashion shows no, markets yes. In order to make yourself known, you must attend markets. As I previously mentioned, we showed in Magic and Platform in Las Vegas. We do gift shows and shoe shows throughout the country. However I hadn’t become as serious about it until maybe the last two and a half years or so. What type of fashion do you focus on? Believe it or not, my focus is women’s wear evening and business, and I have an interest in men’s, however it seems to be rocketing… Who is the clientele you are going after? The “It” Woman that carries many facets of life: Diva, Mom, Glam Doll and everything in between! She’s the head turner and she does quietly. Her garments speak for her and they SCREAM, however in a subtle tone... lol… What inspires your designs? Having the client or shopper leave feeling as though they are more than satisfied, and it is the one new piece that is a ‘must-have’ for whatever season we’re currently in. Do you have any fashion shows coming up in the near future beside Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? In 2012 I am planning to do more shows of my own. What is your fashion or design motto? Live on the outside. How can we stay in contact with you? Email: augustbrandondesigns@gmail.com 7049657039 What is your Web site? Under construction: AugustBrandon.com Melissa Davis, Foxx Skynz How did you get started? I’m a self-taught designer who started designing clothes for myself. I wore them out on the town and always received positive feedback. That happened in 1997, in my hometown of Boston. It wasn’t too long afterwards that I moved to Charlotte and folks here started asking me to create one-of-a-kind garments for them to wear as well. How long have you been in the fashion industry? Foxx Skynz by Design was founded in 2003. My first show was in 2004 in New York. Since then, I’ve showcased my fashions in New Jersey, Seattle, Atlanta, Baltimore and various cities across the Carolinas. My garments have also been featured in the Charlotte Observer, Charlotte Post, Valet Living Magazine, SOTAC Magazine and many other print and news media such as Fox News Charlotte. What type of fashion do you focus on? I’m a ready wear/made-to-measure designer. My garments are edgy, stylish and definitely wearable. They range from casual clothing to evening wear for both men and women. Who is the clientele you are going after? My clientele are chic men and women between the ages of 20 and 45. They work full time, are socially connected, and want to stand out and be noticed. They are hip, organic and keep up with the times. They express themselves by dressing up or down and have the attitude and personality to draw attention. What inspires your designs? Chic elegance is my inspiration. I have an eye to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary (but still wearable). I love colors, neutrals and prints; these fabrics are the basis of my designs. I like to challenge my mind to create something rather nice out of something that started off simply basic.

Do you have any fashion shows coming up in the near future besides Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? My next show is a non-profit event for Domestic Violence. N’Rich the Soul sponsored by Autograph Entertainment will hold a unique celebration of Arts, Culture and Inspiration to raise money to help men and women conquer domestic violence. This will be October 15 at the Art House in the NoDa area. What’s the newest hottest fashion item for spring 2012? There are quite a bit to choose from, but I’d say the thin belt is definitely back in style. It still accentuates the waistline, but it doesn’t overpower the garment. What is your fashion or design motto? Oh, my motto is, “To be Foxxy is an attitude. The Skyn (skin) is how you wear it.” How can we stay in contact with you? emerging designers Amber Johnson How did you get started? I began sewing and illustrating at a young age, and decided to pursue it as a career after high school. I attended the Illinois Institute of Art in Chicago where I had the opportunity to participate in multiple fashion shows, and really fell in love with the design process. What is your fashion philosophy? To create garments with a sense of whimsy, interesting textures and sustainable materials. How has your journey as a fashion designer progressed in the last few years? I had the opportunity to work with two Chicago designers that I really look up to, and through that experience I have come to understand what kind of designer I am, and what it takes to run a successful business in the fashion industry. What type of individual would wear your brand? A person that looks for a little whimsy in their wardrobe, and isn’t afraid to experiment.

Tell us the story about your collection? This collection is all about texture; I wanted to bring in as many textiles as possible, while maintaining cohesion and a sense of balance. Each garment can be appreciated from a distance, but there is a sense of discovery when you look at the fabrics up close. Which piece from your collection represents your design abilities? It would have to be the shingle skirt with the chunky scarf; it has a slight hint of masculinity, but an overall feminine silhouette. What is the next step for you in the fashion industry? I am open to all facets of the fashion industry, and in the near future I am looking for opportunities to showcase my work, and share my point of view with a more broad audience. How can we stay in contact with you? My e-mail address is ambergeraldinejohnson@gmail.com. What is your Web site? AmbergJohnson.weebly.com Anno Domini Designs (Emily Kramer and Amanda Gaskins) How did you get started? Like all great road trips, surprises are bound to happen. In 2008 our road trip to Chicago led to meeting a t-shirt designer whose interest was piqued by the intricate designs of our period pieces. At the time we were making and designing high-end period garments for reenactments and renaissance festivals. That got us thinking that we could incorporate aspects of period fashion into modern clothing. From there the ideas flowed easily, and we had opportunities to show our few designs at several shows in Chicago, with positive feedback. Since we both live in the Carolinas, and believe there is a growing fashion audience in Charlotte, it is our current focus to be a part of that here. What is your fashion philosophy? Walk softly upon the earth, but wear your best feathers.

69

How has your journey as a fashion designer progressed in the last few years? The past few years have been filled with learning experiences for us. We’ve tried to involve ourselves with as much of the fashion industry and as many events as we can. We’ve learned what not to stress over and what kind of look we prefer. There’s so much we’ve learned about ourselves and how we see our company evolving in the future. What type of individual would wear your brand? Our customer is the kind that takes the red carpet wherever she goes. She’s energetic, she’s fun, and she has a flair for the dramatic! Tell us the story about your collection. The Peacock Collection is about being undeniably recognizable, much like a peacock. We base all of our designs on the simple fact that drama is an essential part of what fashion is at its core. Which piece from your collection represents your design abilities? Each piece in our collection is part of a whole body of work that weaves the story of our design process into a collective piece of art. To say that one piece represents all our design abilities would be underestimating each piece, of which all display our skills and talent as designers. What is the next step for you in the fashion industry? To conquer the world.

70

How can we stay in contact with you? Our emails are Amanda@annodominidesigns.com and Emily@annodominidesigns.com and our studio phone number is 803.328.0236. What is your Web site? AnnoDominiDesigns.com Miikelle Fowler With Miikelle De Fo How did you get started? I was so tired of shopping for clothes that were too young in style or too old for my style. So I decided to start making my own clothing. The response from friends was overwhelming so I started designing for them. I decided to go back to school to learn the business of the fashion industry. What is your fashion philosophy? My philosophy is that every woman should be able to have clothing that fits the busy lifestyle most women lead, while still being stylish. “Sophisticated style to fit your life and style.” I like clean lines and structure with a little flare. 1940’s meets modern needs. How has your journey as a fashion designer progressed in the last few years? I have had more and more opportunities, and the response to my lines have been very good. I have gotten more notice both locally and regionally. I have been learning about the not-so-glamorous side, marketing and paperwork, as I build my brand. What type of individual would wear your brand? All types but I think it appeals more to women my age, late 20s to 40s, that have busy lifestyles and like to wear clothing that fits that lifestyle. They are professional women who like to be sexy but don’t have to go overboard. Tell us the story about your collection? This collection is about fun in the sun. The base colors are bright, bold oranges with blues the hues of the sky. It covers a women’s wardrobe from day to evening, weekends to elegant parties.

71

Which piece from your collection represents your design abilities? I think they all do in different ways, but I am most proud of my draped garments since this is the first time I am doing draping. What is the next step for you in the fashion industry? I am looking to partner with a few local stores to sell my line and then garner more editorial coverage regionally. How can we stay in contact with you? Email at mdf@miikelledefo.com What is your Web site? www.MiikelleDeFo.com Shenelle Evans With Fashenelle How did you get started? I got started just a few years after a couple of years of modeling. And while modeling, my goals changed from the dream of being a model, to a fashion designer. It wasn’t the modeling and acting that excited me, it was the clothes. Hence, a fashion designer was born. What is your fashion philosophy? My philosophy is for the designer. And that is, “Just be the designer you are at heart.” Your clothing is just as individual and special as the DNA that runs through your blood. Never fear the competition because you will always have a customer that is attracted to the art you create. How has your journey as a fashion designer progressed in the last few years? In just the last two years I have graduated each year as a designer. Learning the market and new techniques have sparked interest in 72

the line. And the word of mouth has been keeping me very busy. I can see the big picture clearer... What type of individual would wear your brand? The type of individual that would wear my brand are those that shop at Saks 5th Avenue and Neiman’s. An individual that is bold and classy in dress. Tell us the story about your collection. There’s no real story but my collection has derived over the years. The development of each piece has been consistent with the last. I have a full array of pieces that can be worn at different times as well as different settings, in other words, “classic.” And, although each sample was created at different times, the collection gels together. Re-Model Designers Being eco-friendly is not just a trend anymore. With the growth of technology, there are much safer and easier ways to preserve our environment. These re-model designers are here to show Charlotte that any object can be transformed into a fashionable item. Using just the right pieces and a little creativity, these designers make recycling exciting. So before you throw away your trash, consider the stylish options that these designers have created for you. April Reich and Donna Lineberger, creators of “The House of Willow” What inspired your design? Passport for Fashion, April 2011 inspired us with so many awesome materials, we wanted to think outside the box, and mini blinds were a main focus when looking around our home for inspiration … “they let the SUN in.” What products are you incorporating for your design at Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? Mini blinds (small and large), drapery rope, shaped mirrors, non-slip shelf liner, and spray paint (pink/blue). How important is sustainability for the industry today? Sustainability is essential to the fashion industry because, first, it can offer an extensive variety of materials that will create more diverse design concepts and encourage distinctiveness. The fashion industry is so saturated with furs, skins, and other non-natural materials, we

can create a balance by incorporating more natural (organic) and recyclable materials which in turn can create a varied price point which will create more revenue… more jobs…more shoes _!!! What aspect of the industry do you believe needs to become more conscious of the waste they produce? The Home Interior Industry is very wasteful. Most of the fiber products are for short-term to medium-term use, lasting up to a few years in their service life; for example carpet, sheets, etc. While the textile industry has a long history of being thrifty with its resources, a large proportion of unnecessary waste is still produced each year. What is the message that your piece says to viewers? The piece is so much fun and so colorful is definitely says, “Let’s have fun…responsibly.” What is your current occupation? April is a full-time mother, artist, and model and has been working within the mortgage industry for 11 years. Donna is a full-time fashion designer and stylist, educator as well as mentor to the youth. How can we stay in contact with you? April Reich at 980.339.2896 and Donna Lineberger at 336.287.5703. What is your website? AprilsReich.biz and Donrai.com. Chante’ Bush With Bushwoman Designs by Unique What inspired your design? The future of fashion: Blade Runner, Mad Max on a recyclable realm; a supernatural Nova!! What products are you incorporating for your design at Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? I’ve incorporated ribbon, place mats, extension cords, wire, table runners and accessories just to name a few. It’s going to be really fly!! How important is sustainability for the industry today? Very important! That’s why I believe in what I design and what I’ve designed for this show: to allow people to see that sustainability is sensibility. It makes sense to know that there is nothing “new” under the Sun. You, as the designer, will just need to know how to “make it work!” (Tim Gunn, I luv him!)

77

What aspect of the industry do you believe needs to become more conscious of the waste they produce? We all need to be more conscious of not only the waste we produce, but how we treat ourselves, each other, and the planet. This is a gift from the Most High that we take for granted. If we don’t use it the right way, we will lose it! What is the message that your piece says to viewers? Be bold, be beautiful, be a Bushwoman and you’ll be unique (pun intended). This is, “where Beauty and the Bush blend.” What is your current occupation? I am an Alternative Family Living (AFL) provider. I provide live-in services for clients that are physically and mentally challenged. How can we stay in contact with you? You can contact me at bushwoman_72@ yahoo.com, tweet me @Bushwoman72, or call me at (704) 631-7943. We will be launching a website very soon as well. Christine L. Cook With Nouveau Finishes What inspired your design? Frescos in Europe What products are you incorporating for your design at Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? Painter’s drop cloths How important is sustainability for the industry today? Sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well-being. It is responsible planning and management of resources. What aspect of the industry do you believe needs to become more conscious of the waste they produce? Paint companies. All the paint cans go to our landfills. They should be recycled.

78

What is the message that your piece says to viewers? Recycle, it’s beautiful! What is your current occupation? Faux finishing and cabinet refinishing How can we stay in contact with you? 704-458-8484 or by email at theartofclc@ msn.com. What is your website address? NouveauFinishes.com Erika Diamond What inspired your design? Victorian trends and the concept of containment What products are you incorporating for your design at Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? Chicken wire and fabric How important is sustainability for the industry today? It is important to an extent for every industry What aspect of the industry do you believe needs to become more conscious of the waste they produce? I come from a Sculpture background, so it is difficult for me to answer. What is the message that your piece says to viewers? This piece is designed to question whether the body is caged, or protected and confined, or liberated by the garment.

What is your current occupation? Artist How can we stay in contact with you? By email at erikadiamond@yahoo.com. What is your Web site? ErikaDiamond.com Lia Baldwin With Bentala Salon What inspired your design? Inspired by a campaign for clean water across the world, the gown I created ties in the natural element of water, and how easily it cascades over the earth. What products are you incorporating for your design at Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? The gown was created using laminate tiles from various companies’ factory samples, used in kitchen and bath remodeling. Also incorporated in the design are samples from cabinetry remodeling. How important is sustainability for the industry today? Charlotte as a city is ranked very highly. Unfortunately the ranking I am thinking of is that we are NumberEight in the country in most ozone-polluted cities. Our city as a whole, no matter which industry you are in, needs to re-evaluate what we are doing on a daily basis, and focus on recyclable, reusable, and renewable systems. What aspect of the industry do you believe needs to become more conscious of the waste they produce? Imagine all the paint, tile, carpet, and flooring samples these factories make every year, and how often new ones are produced. Most of these products cannot be recycled. This gown was created to show that there are practical uses for things most consumers normally just throw away. What is the message that your piece says to viewers? Japanese Fashion Designer Issey Miyake said, “The purpose - where I start - is the idea of use. It is not recycling, it’s reuse.” My goal is to encourage people to look beyond an item’s standard use, and see the amazing things you can create. What is your current occupation? Hair Designer with Bentala Salon, and manager of The Body Shop in South Park. How can we stay in contact with you? Lia@bentalasalon.com or at 843.421.1651. What is your Web site? BentalaSalon.com

Rachel Nell Cobb What inspired your design? My design was inspired by a poem that reads, “In the forest dark and deep, I offer you eternal sleep. This poem brought to mind the concept of a Victorian girl becoming lost in an enchanted forest and falling under a spell that causes her to sleep for years, allowing the vines, roots, and elements of the forest to cover her clothing and become a part of her. What products are you incorporating for your design at Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? One technique that I decided to use involved applying fabric stiffener to strips of ribbon to create curls for a root-like texture. I also utilized pillow piping that I fashioned into tiny swirled shapes and tea stained for an aged aesthetic. Paint was also incorporated, being used on some of the piping swirls to further age them. Creating my own fabric was also something that I decided to try through the process of sewing together various lace trims and doilies. How important is sustainability for the industry today? Sustainability is something that will hopefully become a long-term trend in the fashion industry. Without considering where our fabrics, dyes and materials are coming from, we are choosing to ignore the impact that we are having on the environment. What aspect of the industry do you believe needs to become more conscious of the waste they produce? Every aspect of the industry could become more conscious, but the textile manufacturing area could become more aware of their effect on the environment in the areas of water waste and solid material waste, two of the industry’s largest areas of waste. What is the message that your piece says to viewers? It is my hope that my dress communicates to viewers that aged, worn, and reused materials can create something that is not only unique but also beautiful and oneof-a-kind. My piece was inspired by and tells a fairy tale story, but it also delineates the importance of utilizing unconventional items to create distinct fashion. How can we stay in contact with you? Iadoreowls@aol.com.

Sidney Robertson With Designs By Sidney What inspired your design? My love for nature, which is why there is a tree and birds represented in my outfit. What products are you incorporating for your design at Charlotte Seen Fashion Week? I have a left-over piece of silk fabric from a job I had done for a friend. I also reused the zipper from a job and added screen wire and tile accents to my piece, and a few feathers. How important is sustainability for the industry today? I think it is very important for all of us in every industry to use as many green products as possible. We only have one earth and it’s so full of amazing and wonderful gifts that we must, as a species, do everything possible to preserve it ... not only because it’s the right thing to do, but [because] it will also ensure survival. What aspect of the industry do you believe needs to become more conscious of the waste they produce? I truly think the construction industry has a tremendous amount of waste. I built houses for a few years and I know first-hand the waste that occurs from a job. Our building and recycling habits must change. What is the message that your piece says to viewers? I want to bring awareness to the public to make them think of using products for many uses other than the one single purpose they were created for. After all, that’s what real creativity and design are: to repurpose something in a way to inspire and to create beauty and art for the world. What is your current occupation? I am the owner of Designs By Sidney. I am a craftsman of interior design products such as drapes, Roman shades, bedding, etc. How can we stay in contact with you? designsbysidney@gmail.com or sidblane@yahoo.com or you can call 704.492.1847. as much social club as day spa. It boasts the kind of indulgences that any man will appreciate: pool table, flat-screen TVs, and a relaxed atmosphere to linger in before or after a haircut, shave, massage, manicure or pedicure. Why men only? Because men deserve an environment that caters exclusively to their style and grooming needs. Ask a man where to get the best service for his car or the best deal on a plasma TV, and he’ll know in an instant. But a first-rate haircut or massage … that’s another story. There’s just no other place in Charlotte that can claim to meet the grooming needs of style-conscious, discerning men. Founders Shelly (Takats) Hutchins and Stacy (Takats) Donnelly were inspired to create the men-only salon by their style-conscious grandfathers Lewis “Emerson” Smith and Gabor “Joseph” Takats. These two men exemplified masculinity, honor, and style. At Emerson Joseph, the men of Charlotte will find these same ideals—in both the first-class services and a setting that’s designed specifically to make the grooming experience pleasant. 221 South Tryon St. Charlotte, NC 28202 | 704.343.3443 EmersonJoseph.com Nestled in the historic Dilworth neighborhood, Folicle Salon and Spa offers the highest quality for services including technically skilled haircuts and coloring services, manicures, pedicures, massages, facials, and waxing.
