publisher’s note Thanks for picking up this month’s issue of Elevate Lifestyle, your Fall 2011 Guide. Those who say Charlotte has nothing to do must stay in their houses and never venture out. Actually, one of the articles we have is perfectly titled, “Nothing to do in Charlotte?”, in which the writer has written a brief synopsis about a dozen or so places in Charlotte that are perfect to visit for the first time or over and over again as they get new exhibits. Then on Saturday, October 29, Wells Fargo is kicking off their Community Celebration which gives you free admission to dozens of different venues like area museums, and also provides access for you to take in some of the visual arts and learn some new craft skills. Fall means football, and what goes better with football than wings. Our dining editor takes a trek across Charlotte to see what restaurants have the best wings. Once you get filled up on wings, you will need to be outdoors to work off some of those calories. And with the cooler weather, it’s the perfect time for some outdoor events, so Elevate Lifestyle has all types of events going on. We start with the Third Annual Three Olives Martini Fest on Thursday, October 13 at the Rooftop Pavilion at the EpiCentre. Then, Saturday, October 15 we kick off the weekend with a trip out to the Carolina Renaissance Festival to enjoy the sights and great food; we will meet up at ICEHOUSE. That evening we have the first Charlotte Checkers Outing with a preand post-party. The next weekend, Saturday, October 22 we will have the Second Annual Back To Life Fall Festival at ICEHOUSE with music, a corn hole tournament, silent auction, plenty of fun and adult beverages. More details on these events and plenty more at ElevateLifestyle.com. And of course it is October, which means Halloween, and Charlotte has a couple of the biggest costume parties in the country: The Grave Diggers Ball at Dixie’s Tavern and the Music, Monsters and Mayhem at the NC Music Factory. They are both Saturday, October 29. Hope to see you all at one of our great events! Steve Caldwell

Football is back and the team colors are painting the city of Charlotte. But game days just aren’t the same without tasty wings, good drinks and a great bar at which you can post up and scream at the TVs. While you can get a beer out of any of the hundreds of taps all around the Queen City, the best bars to watch the games also have the best atmosphere, the best food selection, and the best bartenders. So we went straight to the source and visited the bars, restaurants and pubs and let the bartenders themselves tell us why the football season is best spent at their second homes.

Wild Wing Café If you’ve been to the Wild Wing Café in Ayrsley, you know Brian Shillington. And Brian knows Wild Wing like the back of his hand. He’s been a mixologist for them for eight years and can tell you everything you want to know about the food, drinks and all things football at the Wing. With TVs wrapping the bar and restaurant, you’ll always see the game you want, but there’s more than just watching to do on game days. Head out front during halftime and sign up for corn hole. Winner scores $20 of Wild Wing bucks and can take home a jersey. Or stay inside and play the lucky button game where you could win $100 in bar cash after the third quarter. Want to put your head to work? They’ve got that too – grab a sheet and play pick em’ trivia every week. You predict the NFL games and the Monday night football score, then answer the trivia questions and winner takes home $50 of Wild Wing bucks. And don’t forget to pick up your scratch-off cards for college football to win instant prizes. Although the games and prizes are enough to get you there, no football day is complete without the food and drinks. Brian is serving up $12 Bud family buckets, $3 stadium cups and many other specials throughout the week. And make sure you check out the menu. With 34 different ways to get your wings sauced and tossed, there is a flavor for everyone, like Brian’s favorite, the Boss wings. Stop in this week and visit Brian and the crew as he will tell you the games always bring in an exciting crowd, lots of fun people and it’s just a great football atmosphere. And if you’re a lover for garnet and black runs deep, head to the Wild Wing Epicentre, the official Charlotte home of the South Carolina Gamecocks. Dixie’s Tavern Meet Rick Webster. He’s been slinging bottles at Dixie’s for more than four years but no introduction is really needed, as he’ll tell you himself, “Everyone knows me.” He’s serving up drinks, food and a good time, as Dixie’s is the place to be this football season. You can ask for a menu but you have to try the wings. Many places give you small wings, Rick says, but Dixie’s are big and really filling and you can mix-and-match any flavors you want. Try the honey BBQ, Rick’s personal favorite, and mix them with Cajun, which he says is also really good. Or if you dare, try the tempting flavor of the Way Hot wings. The name should be your warning and you may not want to let Rick in the kitchen as, “sometimes I get a bit crazy and make them even hotter than we normally do them.” You can try these flavors on Saturdays for Penn State games for just 35 cents a wing. Make sure to stop back in on Sundays as Dixie’s is the Charlotte home for the Pittsburgh Steelers. They offer lunch, dinner, late nights and happy hour specials. 301 East 7th St. | 704.374.1700 | DixiesCharlotte.com Dilworth Neighborhood Grille Welcome to the Neighborhood. If you haven’t been to Dilworth’s, there’s plenty of football left and Tracy Ivy would love to see you there. Working for Dilworth’s for six years, Tracy loves football, appreciates her customers and can tell you anything you want to know about the bar. And if you are looking for the ultimate sports bar, this is it. Tracy will tell you this is the perfect atmosphere for football. This two-story restaurant seats 140 people just downstairs and they are glad to pull in extra rows of tables and chairs for big games. Each of the games has their own rooms so you can watch with other fanatics just like yourself. Feel free to step outside as well -- Dilworth’s encourages it -- as there is always tailgating in the parking lot and people throwing the ball around during halftime. And this is a bar of many teams. Tracy

24

says Dilworth’s is a Jets bar with a great following. But they also support the Panthers, offering shuttle service to the stadium on game days, and on Saturdays this is the place to be if you’re a Georgia fan. And it doesn’t stop there. Tracy said you’ll see alumni from at least seven different universities piling in to watch their games. The party starts before the season, goes strong during and continues on after the season, well into basketball. Don’t be surprised if you recognize some of the patrons either. Auburn alumni, including Cam Newton, piled into the bar on the opening weekend of college football. While the daily drink specials are sure to please, Tracy said the food is unlike other bars. She hates calling it bar food but if you must, consider it “upscale bar food” she says, offered at great prices. Dilworth’s has award-winning crab cakes and offers up a taste of upstate New York with the chicken spiedie wrap. 911 E. Morehead St., 200 | 704.377.3808 | NeighborhoodGrille.com Taco Mac With football, comes beer. And Taco Mac would love to offer you a cold one. Or how about 140 cold ones? If you’re looking for the spot with the best tap selection, welcome to Taco Mac. One hundred-forty draught beers line the back wall of the bar and there’s dozens of other bottle selections to keep you coming back to try a different brand. Yet if you’re looking to pair your taste of brews with your love of the game, Alley Holmes can tell you, you better get there early. Working for the SouthPark Taco

25

Mac since it opened its doors last August, Alley knows that no matter where you sit, you can see the huge TVs that cover the walls of the two-story restaurant, but the place is beyond packed on game days. But if you grab a seat, make sure to grab an order of the wings as well. While Alley loves the spicy flavor of the habanero BBQ, she says the Death sauce is a big seller. Taco Mac mixes their signature hot sauce with jalapeno juice, pepper and then they spice it up even more. Served up boneless, fried or oven-baked, they have a type of wing for any football lover. And if you’re lucky enough to grab a table at the bar, you have your very own tap service. Three taps are located at the end of each table and always offer up an Old Mecklenburg Brewery beer, a Sweetwater beer and Taco Mac’s beer of the month. You activate the taps with an iPod at the table, pour the beer yourself and pay by the ounce. Yet your server will still be checking in to offer different craft beers or any entrée from the vast menu. Three Charlotte Locations | 704.972.0503 | TacoMac.com Hickory Tavern If you want a place where the TVs are huge, the wings are tasty and there are so many team colors around your eyes start to hurt, look no further. Welcome to the Hickory Tavern. Sami James is glad to see you there and has been strutting her stuff around the Tavern in Steele Creek for three and a half years now. She will be behind the bar serving up buckets, Bloody Marys and mimosas all weekend long for college and pro football. Just ask her and she will tell you, they get a huge crowd with a diversity of teams, and they’re glad to have them. Don’t worry about missing a minute of any game. With TVs circling the place and a few more in the bathroom, HT has you covered. And Charlotte agrees – Hickory Tavern was recently voted as runner-up in ESPN’s Best Sports Bar in North America. Your votes made it happen and they are proud to hold the honor. Stop in and see for yourself and try Sami’s favorite wings, the teriyaki.

26

Or grab one of the beers from the hundreds listed. Whether you love a domestic, craft or import, HT has you covered and can suggest a new brew every time you come by. Five Charlotte Locations | 704.497.7360 | TheHickoryTavern.com

Buffalo Wild Wings The beer is ice cold, the wings are hot and the games are always on at Buffalo Wild Wings. Just ask Chasity Hunter, who’s been at the NASCAR Hall of Fame location for two years now. She’s serving up $3 Bloody Marys on Sunday, shaking $4 martinis Wednesday through Saturday and pouring brews out of the 24 taps all week long, including the new Brooklyn Pumpkin Ale. And it just gets better from there. BWW offers up award-winning, New York-style wings hand spun in 30 different flavors. Feel free to mix and match ‘em and try some of Chasity’s favorites, including the spicy garlic, honey BBQ and the Asian zing. Pair it up with your favorite NFL game, as wing buckets are just $10.99 for 25 on Sundays. Stop in for any college game as well, as every game is shown every weekend so nobody has to fight over any game. Pair that up with BBW’s laid back, fun atmosphere and you have a one great football combo. Three Charlotte Locations | 704-971-9464 | BuffaloWildWings.com Dining Editor, Nikki Wilson

FASHIONISTA’S

FABULOUS FALL 2011 New York’s Fashion Week sets the tone for what we will be wearing this fall 2011, but Charlotte is also host to our very own Charlotte Seen Fashion Week that will set the pace for all Fashionistas. Fall is most definitely the season to include new classic items as well as trendy pieces in your wardrobe to “update” your look. Recently, I attended Belk’s “Hello Beautiful,” fall preview and was inspired by Arlene Goldstein, VP of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction. She mentioned that many of this fall’s fashions are inspired by the Mad Men TV Series. I personally love the show, and am delighted with all of its amazing fashions. Not to mention, being on trend is what Arlene does best!

Maggy London Sheath Dress $168 Available at Belk

Your wardrobe this year should include a few classic pieces such as a turtleneck top, a sheath dress and definitely a pencil skirt. Arlene hit the bull’s eye target on all of these pieces. You can partner existing pieces from your

wardrobe with these basic pieces and have your Vogue Look without breaking the bank. Add a few fashion jewelry pieces from Vince Camuto’s Collection including a chain necklace (staple piece that will last an eternity) and layered bangles, and you will have fall all wrapped up! Are You Squeaky Clean? A motivational speaker once posed the question, “If you treated your friends like you treat your body, would you have any?” Some of you reading this article may respond, “Yes, I would have many friends,” but others like myself are probably raising their eyebrows in shock while picturing their number of friends decreasing rapidly. I am not a fast food junkie nor do I habitually abuse my body, but I know that I could stand to make healthier choices from time to time. One option I have yet to try is that of cleansing. Many of the times I mention the word “cleanse” to people, they shudder in disgust and quickly change the topic. It wasn’t until I saw the reactions of two people close to me that I began to consider the option of doing a cleanse. So why the act of doing a “cleanse”? According to Wikipedia, there is not any scientific evidence that supports the alleged benefits of colon

cleansing. However, many have claimed that a cleanse is a healthy way to promote a good, functioning colon that is quite often neglected. They can appear in several forms such as pills, juices, herbs, dietary supplements or laxatives. People who practice cleansing believe that this assists with keeping out diseases, reduces blockage, and overall makes them feel “lighter,” or healthier, if you will. Then there are also the other benefits that are aesthetic in nature, like feeling skinnier and feeling as though it has attributed to your outer appearance. When I asked a friend of mine how she felt after doing a “Cooler Cleanse,” she offered this testimony: “I did the three-day [program] first a few weeks ago. Today is Day Number-Five of my five-day cleanse and I feel so light, full of energy and great! These cleanses really are so good for resetting your body. Processed foods seem so unappealing and fruits and veggies have so much flavor! It’s like once you get all the salt and processed toxins out of your body -- not only does it alleviate excess bloat -- but it’s like it resets your taste buds to really sense all the flavors of natural, organic foods. I crave hummus and carrots and apples and almond butter. And the idea of salty chips just seems so unappealing. Eliminating and

35

then limiting processed foods and salt from your diet can keep over five pounds of just bloating water weight away ... and that can give you nearly an extra inch in your jeans!” The Cooler Cleanse is a juice cleanse that incorporates a system of products that can either be purchased for the three-day or five-day period. It boasts being a gentler experience for first-timers as it gives you juices with which you replace your three major meals, and allows for even some mild snacking. For more information, visit CoolerCleanse.com or call 1-888-COOLERS. There are other choices out there if drinking your meals does not sound appealing to you. There are herbal dietary supplements like “Colon Clenz.” This supplement is a blend of herbs intended to provide a clean internal environment, according to GNC (www.gnc.com). Oxypowder is also another option but may seem intimidating to the first-time user. The Web site has a plethora of knowledge and necessary instructions for completing a successful seven-day cleanse (www.oxypowder.com). Be sure to read the caution label found on the bottles, however. Certain medications and health situations could be a hindrance to your completing a successful cleanse. If the label says you are good to go, then go for it! There are more pros than cons with regards to trying out a cleanse. Until next time… Fitness Editor, Monique Douglas

There are some places we all must see at some point in our lives. They bring a renewed sense of life and remind us what it means to truly live it. These journeys give a voice to the soul and connect us to our surroundings. I want to share with you such a place, sought after by those of us who love nature and all that is natural. My hope is that you get to one day experience her as I have, and visit her often. She is known as The Commonwealth of Dominica: or simply, Dominica.

She was first named by the Carib Indians as “Waitikubuli,” which means “tall is her body.” The history of this Caribbean isle is intriguing in itself. Even more interesting is the mix of different cultures. The national language is technically English, but with a strong French influence. As a former British isle of mixed lineage, Dominica hails as a Créole nation. The language is Créole, and it is also the culture. I am Dominican, and I have a natural pride that calls me home. Dominica is an attraction that appeals to my heart so much that I wanted to share with you highlights of my most recent summer trip. I had the pleasure of visiting a few hotspots during my family’s celebration of our great-great-aunt’s 100th birthday. You too can experience the enchantments of Dominica. Your chosen hotel will be happy to pair you with a local guide to assist you in organizing an adventure package. Diving, snorkeling, hiking, sunbathing on one of our many shores of black sand, spiced nourishment and shopping are but a few things your vacation might consist of. Screw’s Sulfur Spa was my favorite stop. Remove your jewels or other non-gold metals to avoid ruining them (or that hot and heavy polish session: for pure silver wearers) and relax into a warm or cold pool. If you’re tougher than I was, wade over to the hotter pool and dowse yourself. If you can tolerate the smell of sulfur, a hot spring soak has some great healing qualities! Sulfur is said to assist in lessening wrinkles, blemishes and skin damage. There are also claims that sulfur may help heal wounded joints, tendons, ligaments, and connective tissue. Sulfur is said to also help construct sulfur-bearing amino acids in the body, which detoxify the liver, nourish the hair and skin, and build flexible muscle. Next up, I propose a nature hike through our rain forests, followed by a picnic near one of our 365 rivers. Even more incredible, are our breathtaking waterfalls. Depending on your level of physical fitness, you can begin with a 30-minute hike to Three Falls. I suggest you pack water bottles, your digital recorder and some of our local fruit: include guava (my favorite!). If you are a more advanced hiker, you

39

may want to charge on for a few more hours to witness some of our other waterfalls. For your less vigorous explorations, our two major cities, Roseau (capital) and Portsmouth, offer great souvenir choices. Be sure to first stop into a local bank to change out your U.S. dollars for our local currency, the Eastern Caribbean dollar. We have local art and keepsakes that can be purchased in these hotspots. If you brought along an empty roller-bag, you may decide to bring it along for the ride as you head up to the Carib Reservation to pick out a few more hand-crafted mementos. So much shopping, so little space! After these discoveries, ease up at Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, Dominica and enjoy the blend of island tunes, fine dining, luxury and coziness to unwind and savor the local selection of spirits. Embrace the irie vibes and jump up and whine. You deserve it! Like Bob Marley said, “one good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” The best part about my trip was being able to wake up to a rooster crowing at sun break and getting a chance to enjoy my family and do it all again. You don’t want to do too much in one day. After all, you are on vacation. Day two or three is prime time to experience the underwater wonders that Dominica has to reveal. Various pristine subsurface sites make Dominica the premier dive destination in the world. The Fort Young Hotel collaborates with Dive Dominica, a top-rated locally-owned diving operation, guaranteeing your needs will be

40

fulfilled and fun-filled with diving and water activities. Another indulgence is the Dominica Holistic Holiday package provided by the sumptuous lodgings of Jungle Bay Resort and Spa Hotel. Revitalize your mind, body and spirit with yoga programs or the health spa. Dominica is definitely a spot for family and friends to enjoy. If you are as full of life as I am, you can choose to plan your trip to join in j’Ouvert, a large street party lasting until daybreak during Carnival. Dominica’s Carnival, held at the traditional pre-Lenten time (late February to early March), is a spread of calypso music, competitions, shows and two exhilarating days of street jump-ups. Another crowdpleaser is our annual World Creole Music Festival (late October), which is a platform for musicians and musical expressions. Log on to our official web page, www.dominica.dm, and take a look around. Throughout the year, you can visit Dominica and unwind from the hustle and bustle of stateside living. I know I will! I am first and foremost a native Dominican taking pride in telling you about my island. I encourage you to get to know Dominica and welcome you to contact me via email at info@AbovePrestigePR.com if you would like to know more. LaDána Drigo Social Media: Facebook.com/LaDanaDenis

“Welcome to the greatest show in Earth! Huzzah” —Carolina Renaissance Festival It’s that time of the year again where we enjoy healthy helpings of savory, juicy turkey legs while shopping in a fictitious artisan marketplace. It’s the 18th Anniversary of The Carolina Renaissance Festival. Get excited. The fictitious characters of Fairhaven Village set up a marketplace to welcome the arrival of their King and Queen. This seven-weekend event will include singing bands, street theater, games and rides, entertainment for all ages. There are 300 medieval commoners, knights and members of royalty celebrating culture in every way imaginable.

As the blaring trumpets cue the show, guests will enjoy musical performances, many that are accompanied with ethnic dance influenced by Ireland, Scotland, India, Africa, and the Middle East. Ancient Old World instruments like the hurdy gurdy, hammered dulcimer, penny whistle and guitars will fill the lanes of Fairhaven. This year CRF has a pleasant surprise for you as they introduce a new feature -- Maidens IV, a four-sister band delivering eclectic sounds of Celtics and Roots, a twist of pop, world and a dash of Gypsy Jazz. Sounds like a lot of moving and shaking going on … don’t you agree? Gotta see that. And you can’t miss the “Birds of Prey” exhibition that explains how falcons, hawks, owls, and more were use in the ancient sport of falconry. That’s an interesting history lesson that I’ve missed. Rolling in the grandest event of all — the tournament Joust is filled with “pomp, pageantry, and chivalry.” Oh, so, chivalry isn’t dead after all. The commoners of Fairhaven have got style. I like …

45

Also three times daily, noble knights, actual stunt riders and actors, charge one another in a large tournament field surrounded by a 2,000-seat arena. A show you mustn’t miss. Meanwhile, there are lots of games for the tweens and teens as they may storm the castle with paintball madness. Also enjoy a depiction of a childhood favorite tale of Mother Goose. Costumed actors will stage an exuberant show that features a Petting Farm, as well as camel and elephant rides. And let’s not forget those turkey legs I mentioned earlier. I can hardly wait to sink my teeth into seasoned, salty pieces of meat. Yummy. I may also indulge in several candy delights, chocolate treats and crepes. There’s so much world to explore at the Carolina Renaissance Festival. I simply can’t share it all with you here. You’ll have to experience it for yourself. Advanced discount tickets are $19 for adults and $9 for kids. You may purchase those at Harris Teeter Stores. Or go online to RenFestInfo.com. CRF also honors military and senior citizen discounts. Go get your ticket today. I’ll meet you there. Entertainment Editor, Denise Gregory NikkiPanache.Com

I say both! October rules for many things. Nice weather, every sport imaginable on TV, girls wearing next to nothing -- yeah I like October. I mean, a full weekend where it’s cool for girls to dress like sluts and guys to dress like freaking idiots is brilliant in my eyes. Just about everyone is excited throughout the month of October: kids, adults, dentists, my bookie ( I’ll rally next Sunday!), empty warehouse owners, etc.

There is a reason this month has 31 days. The more days in October, the better; because there are too many things to do. The nice weather brings in annual festivals all around town. Two big ones will kick off in October, starting with the 13th annual Charlotte Oktoberfest on the eighth. Oktoberfest features over 350 of the finest craft brewed beers in the Southeast and from around the world. Live entertainment and plenty of brats, dogs and pretzels are on hand to devour. October’s costume trend stretches to the festivals as well, especially at the 18th annual Renaissance Festival which is always a good time, and is here every weekend for two months. If you have ever been to Renaissance, you know exactly what to expect. October’s nightlife is filled with random Halloween parties and the biggest one can always be found at Dixie’s Tavern for The Grave Diggers Ball. Two big bands and the city’s best and biggest costume party! I can’t help being scared stiff every time I leave the Grave Diggers Ball after drinking and taking in all the skimpy outfits and pumpkins popped out of shirts. Ladies, no fear; surely there will be some douche walking around with his shirt off, don’t worry. 49

You may be beered out this month factoring in that the Panthers and Checkers have several home games, not to mention The Bank of America 500 Race in town. Again I said you may be, not me! I do like to venture out of the norm and I plan to do so at the Third Annual Three Olives Martini Fest. More than 20 area restaurants, bars and lounges shaking their specialty martinis all using dank flavors of Three Olives Vodka. Tickets are only $20 and will benefit the Charlotte Jaycee’s. Start the weekend off right this Thursday the 13th at the Pavilion at Epicenter. Come jam out to some good tunes being spun by Red Bull and enjoy one of the funkiest martinis you’ll ever have poured! I’m as excited as a kid picking out his Halloween outfit when it comes to picking out all the events to attend to this month. Lots of booze, costumes and custom-made martinis are to be had and if I’m lucky, I’ll have candy spread out on my living room floor! ... geez, get your mind out of the gutter will you! Trick and Treat everyone. Cheers! Nightlife Editor, Sean Flynn 50

The 4th Annual Charlotte Fine Art & Craft Show™ happens on December 9, 10 & 11. In 2011, we have a new & improved location in the heart of Uptown Charlotte at the Convention Center, which is the old home of the American Craft Council. The Charlotte Fine Art Show™ is a high quality, juried fine art & fine craft event with global award-winning and top notch local Carolina artists who offer their art work for sale to the public in all forms of media. It can be compared with quality of art to the ACC show; only offers more variety and includes fine art such as

paintings, sculpture, photography, in addition to fine crafts of wood, fiber, clay, glass and more. In the past 3 years, Hot Works presented the Charlotte Fine Art Show™ at the old Merchandise Mart. Upon artists’ requests, the art show is moving to the Convention Center. This event has grown to be Charlotte’s Premier Art Event – it is different than other art shows in the area in a number of ways. World renowned and top notch local artists participate in this event. For some, this will be their only event in North Carolina. This is your one chance in a year to see artists who display in New York, Miami, LA, Chicago and Atlanta. The Charlotte Fine Art Show™ opens on Friday, December 9, from 11am-7pm; Saturday, December 10, from 10am-5pm; and Sunday, December 11, from 10am-5pm. In addition to the great art, the Institute for the Arts & Education is a nonprofit 501c3 organization that is part of this event. Its mission is artistry and community enrichment and helps find ways to enrich lives and strengthen the community through the power of arts. Our goal is to create an atmosphere Anna Shapiro, Fiber

Hot Works flagship show, the Orchard Lake Fine Art ShowŽ held in West Bloomfield, MI has been voted in the top 100 art shows in the country the last five years in a row! That is the same quality of art we bring to Charlotte. There is something for everyone at this event. Enjoy the sounds of various musicians; live art demonstrations allow the patrons to see how some of the art work is made in wood carvings, paintings and clay wheel throwing. The kids can create refrigerator-quality masterpieces in the kid’s art section and the rest enjoy the time selecting that perfect art work for their living room, bedroom, kitchen, office, holiday/gift tiems, even outdoors in the garden! Clearly this event is different, from the indoor setting to the quality and variety of fine art. More info on the web at www.HotWorks.org. C. Elizabeth Smathers, Mixed Media

Mummies of the World: The Exhibit Real Mummies. Real Science. Real People.

Title: Egyptian Cat Mummy Description: The Egyptian cat mummies in the Mummies of the World exhibition date to the Ptolemic period, and show how Egyptian cats were ritually embalmed in a lengthy process using salt and various resins.

Charlotteans and visitors alike should mark “11.11.11” in their datebooks. For on this day, the magic, the history, and the simple awesomeness of Discovery Place’s forthcoming exhibit, “Mummies of the World,” will be unveiled. The exhibit runs from November 11, 2011 to April 8, 2012. The collection comes to Charlotte for its first premiere in the southern United States and its fourth stop on its seven city tour. One objective of the show’s producers is to inform the public that mummies don’t just come from Egypt. With a collection encompassing more than 150 mummies, this is no problem. Visitors to any of the Mummies of the World exhibits will see preserved humans and animals from Europe, Asia, Oceania and yes, still Egypt. Some of these mummies were intentionally preserved, but environmental conditions “accidentally” mummified many, such as those who died in cool, dry places like gorges, or who were buried in crypts and arid coffins. Sim-

plistically, mummification occurs when decomposition does not. In order to be considered a mummy, the body must retain soft tissue, whether it be hair, skin, or muscle. Human and animal mummies alike exist, and with the research of modern science and the innovations of technology, Discovery Place leverages interactive and multi-media learning tools to feature 3-D animation in an exploration of the creation of mummies, their origins, and who they were as people. The mummified Orlovits family comes from a church crypt in Hungary and Baron von Holtz, a seventeenth century nobleman, from his family’s vault in Germany. A 6,420-year-old child mummy journeys form Peru as one of the oldest known mummies, while the Detmold Child, an infant almost 3,000 years older than King Tut makes its way into the collection. Egypt leads in displaying animal mummies with, amongst others, a falcon, a dog, a fish, and most tremendously a baby crocodile. Bring the kids; they won’t get bored and you can trick them into learning about biology and anthropology. A very well-planned museum exhibit developed through the collaboration of 21 institutions from seven countries, this particular mummy collection ironically began with mysterious origins fit for the beginnings of a detective story. It started seven years ago in 2004 with the discovery of 20 human mummies, thought to have been lost during the devastation of WW II, in the basement of the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim, Germany. Upon scouring the museum’s archives, workers found the specimens belonged to Gabriel von Max (1840-1915), an Austrian painter particularly interested in both mystical and anthropological studies.

Title: Three Egyptian Heads Description: These Egyptian mummy heads are part of the Mummies of the World exhibition, the largest traveling exhibition of mummies and artifacts ever assembled. Two centuries ago, Egyptian mummies were frequently cut into pieces and sold, often to tourists. On loan from: Archives of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany

Title: The Tattooed Woman Description: This young woman with long, black hair was naturally mummified in the warm desert air, seated in the burial position typical in Chile before 1400 A.D. She was wrapped in fabric after her death, the impression of which is still visible on her chin and cheeks. She has unusual tattoos; an oval with a dot inside on both breasts and beneath the left corner of her mouth. Little is known about the meaning of these mysterious tattoos. On loan from: Lippisches Landesmuseum, Detmold, Germany

Title: Monkey Mummy Description: This howler monkey is from the site of Grand Chaco, in Argentina, South America. It has not been radiocarbon dated, but it is likely that the monkey was naturally preserved in the warm, dry environment of the area and prepared for display, with a rhea feather skirt and feather wreath around its head and neck. On loan from: Stiftung SchleswigHolsteinische Landesmuseums, Schloss Gottof, Schleswig, Germany

Title: Nes_pa_kai_schuti Description: This is the mummy and sarcophagus of an Egyptian Priest named Nes_pa_kai-schuti, who played a role in the Egyptian religious hierarchy 2,650 years ago. The sarcophagus is made from sycamore wood and decorated with detailed paintings. Beautiful and extensive hieroglyphics tell us his name, his family heritage and his occupation. The inner coffin illustrates stages of the dead man’s journey into the afterlife. On loan from: Lippisches Landesmuseum, Detmold, Germany

With no documents or data accompanying the mummies, the museum gathered a team of scientists to study the collection in what became known as the German Mummy Project, the world’s largest research project dedicated to the examination of mummies and mummification. What makes an exhibition of mummies interesting (besides the fact that it’s mummies!) is the cohesion of scientific and historical information that occurs in one space. Like when Howard Carter discovered King Tut and the riches of his tomb, mummies come with their own artifacts. Baron von Holtz was discovered wearing his top boots, while the Egyptian animals come wrapped in linens bearing scenes telling of life and death in Ancient Egypt. Combining the history of its previous Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit with the science of its BODY WORLDS tour, you won’t just be wandering through a graveyard at Discovery Place; you’ll be seeing not only how certain chemicals and environmental influences affect the body, but how the people to whom these bodies belonged lived, interacted, and even died. As John Mackay, president and CEO of Discovery Place, said, “Mummies of the World will engross visitors in both the science that brings history to life as well the history that science reveals.” Tickets range from $18 to $24, but for a limited time, you can purchase tickets for a Members-only price of $11. Fine print: they must be purchased before the opening date of the exhibit and used before December 23, 2011. Blackout dates will apply over the Thanksgiving Holidays, and you must be a member of Discovery Place by the time of your visit. All tickets are for timed entries, and audio guides will be available for $5, as well. Discovery Place | 301 N. Power2Give Bringing Passion and Creativity Together. In late 2010, the Arts and Science Council of Charlotte-Mecklenburg began development of power2give.org, a groundbreaking new Web site designed to address changing trends in philanthropic giving. The final product is a unique Web site that allows anyone to easily give a gift to the organizations and projects they are most passionate about. With tools and resources for both donors and non-profits, power2give.org makes posting projects, promoting them to different audiences and giving to projects convenient for all involved. Active Project: Green, Vivid, and Cool Lighting Phase 1 Help Theatre Charlotte go green and make our productions more visually exciting with LED lighting. We all want to do something good for the environment and do our part to conserve energy. Many of us have started replacing our incandescent bulbs with more energy efficient alternatives in our homes and businesses. In the theatre world, stage lighting is also evolving into more “green” technology through the use of LED lighting fixtures. These LED lights not only save vast amounts of energy, they are also bolder, brighter, and more colorful. The LED lighting instruments that we would purchase (ETC Selador VIVIDR 11 inch LED fixtures) each costs about $1,300. Eventually, we would like to purchase eight to 10 of these lights. Phase 1 of this project would allow us to purchase four and give us a great start on going green!

GREEN LED lighting would make a dramatic impact on Theatre Charlotte’s energy consumption. Compared to the lighting instruments that we are using now, LED lights would use 97 percent less kilowatts per hour. Plus the “lamps” (or bulbs) don’t burn out as easily -- a conventional lighting instrument lamp will last approximately 400 hours, in comparison to LEDs which are rated at 50,000 hours of usage (that’s 125 times as long). VIVID LED lights create dramatic lighting effects. With LED lights, we are able to more fully cover the stage in light and achieve more vivid colors. The video above shows examples of LED lights versus conventional stage lighting comparing the LED lights we rented for our production of Seussical to the lights that we currently own. COOL The amount of heat that LED lights put out is much less than the conventional lighting that we are currently using. Our actors, stagehands, and even audience members will stay several degrees cooler during a show lit with LEDs. Donor Benefit: See your name in lights! $50 - Friend Your name will be listed in all of our playbills for the 2011-2012 season. $300 – SustainerYou will be invited to one “sneak peek” preview performance of a show that uses our new LED lighting and your name will be listed in all of our playbills for the 2011-2012 season.

$750 – Trouper You will have a guaranteed reserved parking space at the theatre whenever you purchase tickets in advance during the 2011-2012 season. You will be invited to one “sneak peek” preview performance of a show that uses our new LED lighting and your name will be listed in all of our playbills for the 2011-2012 season.

$1,300 (the price of one LED light) – Producer You will be listed in the program with the Production Staff alongside the director and lighting designer as a “Lighting Donor”. You will have a guaranteed reserved parking space at the theatre whenever you purchase tickets in advance during the 2011-2012 season. Lights! Camera! Action! A Glamorous Evening of Fall Fashion and Fun Lights! Camera! Fashion! returns to Belk SouthPark The Junior League of Charlotte, Inc. (JLC) will present the second annual Lights! Camera! Fashion! event on Sunday October 16 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Belk SouthPark. This night of glitz and glamour, sponsored by Belk, debuted as the League’s new fall fundraiser in 2010. The goal of this annual event is to raise funds to further the JLC’s philanthropic mission and support its community partners. In 2010, Lights! Camera! Fashion! raised more than $40,000 to benefit the JLC’s community initiatives. The sell-out crowd of more than 750 attendees enjoyed an evening of giveaways, shopping and a runway show of the latest fall fashions.

Karen Kane

This year, fashion designer Karen Kane, who has become synonymous with style, comfort and sophistication, is scheduled to attend. The event will include storewide interactive demonstrations for both men and women and special one-night-only sales for shoppers looking for a great deal. Hors d’oeuvres, desserts and adult beverages will be served throughout the evening. Prizes given away will include a “Diamonds and Champagne” toast for the chance to win a .75 carat diamond pendant necklace and red carpet giveaway items valued at $500 or more. “I am pleased that Belk wanted to host the event again this year, and I hope the attendees are delighted at the new additions to this year’s event,” said Lights! Camera! Fashion! Committee Chair Tami Burris. Committee member Corrie Mackanos added, “Through this partnership [with Belk] we are able to produce a successful fashion event for the city of Charlotte, while continuing to raise money for the Junior League of Charlotte’s mission of providing voluntarism, developing women, and improving the community.” The biggest change this year: the addition of a second fashion show! Produced with the look and high-energy of a runway show in New York, both shows will give attendees the opportunity to see the latest fashions from Belk. “Two shows are being 77

presented, providing a clear view of the show to all attendees, and VIP ticket holders have a guaranteed seat,” said Burris. Featured looks will highlight fall 2011 style statements and trends defined by Vice President of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction for Belk, Inc., Arlene Goldstein. Want the discount but not the pressure of shopping during the event? Each ticket purchased includes the ability to pre-shop from October 9 to 16. Simply show your Lights! Camera! Fashion! admission ticket and a Belk associate will add a 20 percent discount to your purchase. Items will be available for pick-up the night of the event. Tickets can be purchased on the JLC Web site (JLCharlotte.org). General admission tickets are $50 each, or $90 for two tickets, and include a gift bag with a minimum $10 Belk gift card inside. One lucky winner will receive a $500 gift card and five winners will find $100 gift cards in their gift bags. VIP tickets are $85 each or two for $150 and include a VIP gift bag, reserved seating for the fashion show, two tickets for the red carpet giveaway and a “Diamonds and Champagne” toast. All proceeds benefit the JLC and support its mission of meeting the physical, dental and mental health needs of children and their families in the Charlotte community. You won’t want to miss this glamorous event for a very worthy cause! Glenda W. Bernhardt 78
