Inspiration, Ideas and Innovation at the GEA Women’s Conference On Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 May over 100 delegates and 13 leaders from a broad range of sectors including engineering, entertainment, business, psychology, mining, oil and gas, government, non-profit, law, and media gathered at the Gladstone Entertainment Centre Marquee for two days of interactive workshops, covetable professional advice and valuable networking. The first day of programming examined several key themes relating to how the world we live in shapes our work and our lives, and how we as individuals respond to the demands and pressures of daily life in today’s fast-paced world. Celebrated Australian actress and comedian Julia Morris opened the conference with gusto as she gave attendees an insightful, thoughtful and hilarious insight into striking that illusive “work/life balance”. Attendees participated in an innovative group exercise that examined the concepts of organisations and the people, personalities and dynamics that make them tick, and encouraged participants to explore how we as individuals are influenced by the various social and organisational structures that we live and work within. A panel discussion featuring some of Australia’s best legal, political and business minds examined some of the social and organisational structures that can prevent women from reaching their full potential and offered ways that we as individuals and the organisations we work for can implement strategies to achieve change and a more equitable workforce.

Thursday’s speakers stressed the importance of embracing one’s natural talents and letting them shine to light the way along one’s career path. Participants learnt how flexibility is at the core of success and that resilience and determination can be mustered even at the most difficult times. Thursday’s keynote speaker was award-winning business woman and former CEO of Ella Baché, Karen Matthews, who was instrumental in the complete restructure of the Ella Baché brand and the organisation itself in the early noughties. Karen urged delegates to consider their personal vision and direction in answering the question “What is Your Headline?” Karla Way McPhail, a former teacher, shared how she launched her company after years in another seemingly unrelated field, yet had a business idea and drew from her core strengths and talents to make her company a success. Specialist high performance consultant Alastair Rylatt urged delegates to be their own biggest fan, and broke down the finer points of self promotion and how to make the most of mentors and sponsors. Sue Chase, Managing Director and Owner of Cowell Electric, shared how she risked everything to save her family business, whilst grieving for her husband who died unexpectedly in an accident and raising two young children.

On Wednesday afternoon Linda Ray, Jillian Kingsford Smith and Tash Fee took a more personal look at how we respond to the demands and pressures of life and work, exploring the concepts of focus, attention, productivity and how to prioritise in order to live one’s best life.

Founder and Executive Director of the Pyjama Foundation Bronwyn Sheehan started with a simple idea – to bring literacy skills and a love of learning to children in foster care, who would otherwise miss out on such childhood joys. Bronwyn shared her story of what is possible for one person to achieve through passion and sheer determination.

While day one got us thinking about the over-arching influences that shape our work and our lives, the second day of programming got us thinking about where we fit into the big picture. Participants were encouraged to turn inwardly and focus on themselves as individuals. The sessions pushed participants to reflect on their strengths, weaknesses and how their own feelings translate to create an image of themselves that is projected to those around them.

By the end of day two delegates had thoroughly examined how they perceive, promote and plan for their lives and acknowledged the power they each hold to shape their best life, completing their two-day journey of inspiration and professional and personal development. However, this was merely the beginning of an exciting voyage of discovery, growth and lifelong learning.

We learn from experience, we use appliances all day every day, and the more electrical items we use without incident, the more complacent we become.

Electrical safety testing detects faults that can be the root causes of:

You can help to keep your employees and family safe from electrical shock or electrical fire by having your electrical appliances inspected, tested and tagged. Annual testing of your RCD (safety switch) will also ensure its effectiveness in the event of an accident.

ABS Release Regional Population Growth 2011-12 The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released regional population growth figures for 2011 – 2012.

As at 30 June 2012, the estimated resident population of Gladstone Regional Local Government Area (LGA) was 61, 170 persons. The annual growth rate in the region between 2011 and 2012 was 3%.

Population projections •

Population projections indicate that by 2016 the expected population of Gladstone Regional LGA will be 74, 459 persons.

By 2013, this is expected to be 111,690 persons.

In the year to 30 June 2011 in Gladstone Regional LGA, natural increase as a component of population change increased by 638 persons, compared with assumed net migration which increased by 711 persons.

Building Approvals •

There were 1,350 new dwelling approvals in Gladstone Regional LGA over the 12 months ending 31 December 2012.

Project Update Gladstone Steel Plant Project This month Gladstone Engineering Alliance partnered with Boulder Steel to stage three information sessions for members with an interest in design, engineering, construction and maintenance opportunities for the Gladstone Steel Plant Project. On Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 May over 40 GEA members had the opportunity to meet with Boulder Steel to discuss the intended construction delivery model for the proposed $4 billion project. Members will have significant opportunities to form consortia to deliver eight main construction packages in addition to longer term maintenance contracts in operations.

Western Basin Dredging and Disposal Project complete at this stage, is a 13 metre deep channel up to the APLNG site on Curtis Island as well as completing the swing basins for APLNG and GLNG. “So at the moment out of our total scope of work there is a bit less than six million cubic metres remaining for the LNG project. The Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal dredging was completed in February this year. Castor dredge

The Western Basin Dredging and Disposal Project (WBDDP) is coming into the home stretch with dredging expected to be completed in September 2013, 15 months ahead of schedule. The Western Basin dredging project will increase port access by deepening, widening and creating new shipping channels with depths of up to 13 metres to allow vessels to enter and exit the Western Basin.

“At this stage it looks like we will be finished the project by the end of August or early September this year which puts us about 15 months ahead of schedule.” As at 13 May 2013, approximately 16.2 million cubic metres has been removed by dredging the Western Basin, which is approximately 62% of the total 26 million cubic metres. Approximately 11.8 million cubic metres has been deposited inside the reclamation zone at Fisherman’s Landing with approximately 4.4 million cubic metres deposited at the East Banks disposal site.

The GEA spoke with the WBDDP Leader Peter O’Sullivan about where the project currently sits in terms of progress. “The WBDDP is looking to complete the dredging well ahead of schedule,” Mr O’Sullivan said. “Recently we’ve completed the works associated with opening up the channel for export LNG vessels and the swing basin for the QCLNG site on Curtis Island. “What that means is that the only two remaining parcels of work to

Wrap Up GEA Tender Readiness Program GEA’s business training offers a range of dynamic and practical training programs to help members’ businesses succeed and grow. Stage 3 of the GEA Tender Readiness Program wrapped up last month with the final two workshops of the program.
