BIG CITY WHAT MEET US AS WE APPROACH THE NOCTURNAL CITY

BUSINESS WOMAN THE HISTORICAL LEGACY OF THE NIGHT’S POWER

ATHENS BYNIGHT BEAUTY ‘ROOTED IN ATMOSPHERE’ NOT EASILY EXPLAINED

A MESMERIZING NIGHT

INTHE BIG CITY

Fear and fascination meet us as we approach the nocturnal city and accompany us along our way.We enter a world that is both familiar and strange, a landscape full of light and rich with shadows, the receptacle of our desires and of our hidden, unspeakable fears. What a challenge to the senses: hesitant perhaps, often full of curiosity and hopeful of reward after a day of normality, we feel our way forward in the darkness, and eyes, ears and nose quicken to the new and different impressions of the night.

ACCESS TO THE NIGHT IT IS ALL ABOUT THAT !

“The idea of ‘night life’ comes to mind, with its promising associations: pleasure, escape from the everyday, secret get-aways.”

I

t would be tempting, delightful and only too easy to write about this ‘night life’, to craft garish, colorful phrases, paint images of the intoxication the night’. We will talk about night life, but night in the big city has other dimensions. It is worth digging deeper, questioning clichés and stereotypical images: the riches of the night do not disclose themselves at first glance, but lie buried in little-known sources, texts and stories.

Paris la nuit’, ‘Berlin bei Nacht’, ‘London by night’ - the sound of the words conjures up a broad field of associations, images and memories, an almost infinite ensemble of attitudes and behaviors. Two images in particular spring up before our eyes: on the one hand the nocturnal city as celebration, as the place of pleasure and entertainment, and on the other the nocturnal city as the place of terror, of threatening danger. Both images describe and characterize, in contradictory fashion, one single world.

JUST TRY TO BE

CHICTILL THE END

Entertainment, lively streets, bright window displays, neon signs with their colorful promises, cinemas and restaurants, the parade of the many who ‘go out’ to recover from the strains of work - and empty streets, dark corners, the play of shadow on sinister doorways, disturbing noises, and single, apprehensive, solitary wanderers.

BE READY FOR A

TOTAL ADVENTURE News about the city at night is marked by the same contradiction. What we see in newspapers and other media has a dual face: here, news of assaults and nocturnal attacks; there, reports on the entertainment business of the nocturnal city.

City jungle, at night and in the milky light of dawn. The pavement gleams wet and dirty. In tenement yards, scum gathers, human refuse. The air vibrates with the ringing of countless burglar alarms. Neon signs flicker monotonously through the night, reflected in shrill lightning on the tarmac.

AN ALL - DAY & AN ALL - WEATHER

BUSINESS WOMAN

The historical legacy of the night’s power to transform landscapes and people still shapes activities and behaviors. Flexible working, the expansion of the creative industries and digital communication are gradually blurring previously sharp distinctions between work and leisure and between day-time and night-time.

A MODE OF LOCOMOTION THIS IS WALKING !

“Walking is a mode of locomotion very appropriate to humans, a true art form in these days of four-lanes or even wider breaches in the fabric of the ‘car-oriented city’”

W

hen elating one gains insights into the essence of the nocturnal city that remain hidden from the hurried driver. But for walkers too, strollers who do have the time, access to the city is often obstructed; they are driven into pedestrian zones, the native reserves of an overtaken form of locomotion.

T

he places where the life of luxury takes place - theaters, music halls, ballrooms, restaurants, hotels and shops - display certain common characteristics: here various forms of entertainment, of sociability and of the organization of leisure are raised to a new level, and here we may indeed observe the slow generalization of lifestyles formerly restricted to the privileged and aristocratic.

CHANNELLING ALL DAY

UNLIMITED ENERGY

Do not ever stop exploring the mysteries of the night, hop on the car and ride through the avenues ‘till you find the next interesting spot to stop. Billiard balls click against each other in the restaurants. glasses ring together in liquor-stores and wine taverns, carriages rattle and roll along, and aesthetic teas and jolly family parties gradually rob the streets of their life.

KEEP WANDERING IN

ATHENS BY NIGHT

The contradiction finds expression in numerous word-pairs - light and shadow, dream and nightmare, wealth and poverty - antonyms which construct a wide field from real news and fabulous stories, a world of its own. This is the beauty of the night, a beauty ‘rooted in atmosphere’ that is not easily explained. We sometimes think too of the intoxication of the night, an intoxication often met in Paris.

Under the lime trees, the hands of the bright Academy clock point to 9 o’clock; a significant hour for those ladies walking alone who shoot fiery glances format the fading embers of their eyes, and even address the men, when there are no police near by. At 10 o’clock it is already getting quiet and empty; the night-watchman blows his whistle and shouts: ‘It strikes ten!’, closes the buildings and lies on the steps close by to dream of his duties.
