“Some people are just filled with so much to give the world...I feel like that.” - Speakerfoxxx Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Nilan aka “Speakerfoxxx” is a nationally-respected DJ, and globally-emerging brand to match. In just four years the self-taught DJ has built a resume that includes a wide spectrum of residencies from the swanky W Hotel to the smoky underground Hip Hop Atlanta hideout El Bar to a secured residency on NYC’s East Village Radio’s show “Ballers Eve.” Speakerfoxxx boasts a diverse musical upbringing that saw her singing the church choir and playing in the school band. She learned to play both piano and ukulele by age five and began playing guitar at age 12. In middle school she played in the jazz band and in high she played in a number of punk rock bands she formed herself. As a teen and early 20-something, Speakerfoxxx fell

deep into the party and live music scene like most people her age. But eventually, she grew fonder of the DJs controlling the crowd than the artists and the drinks. Her unique ear for music, skills and demand for female DJs at the time opened doors to more gigs almost immediately including traveling around the country as an official tour DJ for the likes of Yelawolf, Rittz and Three 6 Mafia’s Gangsta Boo. Speakerfoxxx is now adding festival DJ to her resume having played parties and sets at Miami’s Art Basel, SXSW, A3C Hip Hop Festival and TomorrowWorld. “I always try to pay homage to the music that came out before,” she says. “It’s real important to me to not just go up there and play the Top 40 songs. I want to link the history of music together.”

Female DJ’s Prove It’s

Not Just A Man'S World Anymore!

BY: STEPHANIE “ELEVEN8” OGBOGU

We’re used to seeing men behind the booth but in 2014, the number of female disc -jockeys is rising as more and more women are finding that they too can rock the tables just as hard as the guys can. With the influx of women crushing the night life scne, mixtape world and radio waves, the JUICE 2 SXSW Showcase and our Respect The DJ campaign would like to salute just a few of the hottest females in the game.

NAME: DJ Spinderella FROM: Brooklyn, NY

NAME: DJ Diamond Kuts FROM: Philadelphia, PA

NAME: DJ Nicole of Nina Sky FROM: Queens, NY

Dee Dee Roper, internationally known as DJ Spinderella, is a Grammy award winning DJ, producer, rapper, writer and world class mother. Spinderella is one of the original pioneers of hip hop music beginning her career as a member of the iconic rap group Salt-N-Pepa, selling over 15 million albums and singles worldwide.

Transforming her childhood affinity for music into a mainstream career, DJ Diamond Kuts (born Tina Dunham) is pioneering her way through the music industry. Not only is she the first and only female mixer to have a slot on Philadelphia radio, she continues to create immense professional success through television shows, print and digital advertisement and touring with headlining artists like Chris Brown and Young Money’s Nicki Minaj.

Nicole burst into the scene as one half of the identical twin singing duo Nina Sky. As Natalie & Nicole’s raw talent matured, their family supported the twins’ passion and drive to become professional singers. Subsequently, Nina Sky’s musical interests expanded. Nicole learned how to DJ from her stepfather and began playing the guitar and drums. “In the morning, he’d play rock music and then he’d go into some Miles Davis & then he’d play Madonna. He’d play everything!” says Nicole.

NAME: DJ Adore FROM: Baltimore, MD

NAME: DJ Brandi Garcia FROM: Tallahassee, FL

NAME: DJ Cocoa Chanelle FROM: New York

At an early age Aasha Adore began to develop interest in being an official Disc Jockey. A couple of mixtapes and hundreds of parties later she successfully landed a spot with M.I.A. protégé “Rye-Rye” as her tour DJ which was a big stepping stone in her rapidly growing career. They did events from the Perez Hilton Party at SXSW, to Ultramusic Festival in Miami, Florida and other big events in locations such as Prague, Czech Republic, London, England & Paris, France.

Brandi Garcia fell in love with radio after doing an internship in High School. She went on to work college radio at FSU & worked weekends at the local Hip-Hop station. Brandi soon became not only one of the premiere female on-air DJ’s in the South but also in the nation. She received the Justo’s award for “Best Female Mixtape DJ” in 2006 and also DJ’d the hottest shows in Houston including opening up for Jay-Z, Drake, 50 Cent, Ludacris & became DJ for R&B Singer LeToya Luckett.

Ask industry insiders to name the top most skillful female DJ’s and it’s guaranteed you will hear praises about DJ Cocoa Chanelle. Best known for her 15 years on New York’s popular radio station HOT 97, Cocoa has been featured in Vibe Magazine, BET, and was honored with a prestigious award from B.E.T.s Black Girls Rock, Recognized as one of hip hops most ground breaking and respected female DJ’s in Hip Hop History.

NAME: DJ Carisma FROM: Los Angeles, CA

NAME: Jasmine Solano FROM: New York, NY

NAME: DJ Eque FROM: Houston, TX

With a name that truly portrays her character, DJ Carisma adds much more than just charismatic flavor to every mix. The Los Angeles based DJ, whose style clearly reflects the diversity and culture of the city she represents, has continued to develop her craft through countless hours of spinning behind the decks.. As a member of Young California Carisma currently hosts Fresh Out the Box with Power 106’s Yesi Ortiz.

DJ, Music Maker and TV Host – Jasmine Solano is nothing short of a world traveling, bonafide workaholic. Jasmine has DJ’d for Beyonce in Harlem in conjunction with Beyonce’s album release and Wiz Khalifa, as his official DJ for the “Deal Or No Deal Tour”. Besides her rising online and international fame, Jasmine Solano is also a SXSW JUICE alum, performing the showcase in 2012.

You’re too pretty to be a “DJ” said the infamous Uncle Luke upon meeting the world renowned DJ Eque at a video shoot. But after hearing her play just one time, he instantly signed her up as his official tour DJ. It has been her focused skills not her looks that have kept this DJ in the game for nearly 10 years rocking parties, concert tours and television appearances in some of the hottest spots around the world including Italy, Switzerland, Canada, and Germany.

#SXSWTips HY: Drink plenty of water! E8: Get downtown early. The longer you take to make it downtown, the harder it is to find parking. HY: Charge your smartphone every chance you get. The later in the day it gets the herder it is to come across an outlet. E8: Did you RSVP for any and every single day time event yet? Why not? You got something against free food and beer? HY: Wear comfortable shoes. Don’t try to be cute or fly. E8: You’re never too cool to take a pedicab.

HY: Talk to strangers. it’s no telling who you could be standing next to E8: Yeah, what he said. HY: Carry a bag that includes hand sanitizer, H20, Snacks, Sunscreen, somewhere to stash all the free swag you get. E8: Avoid tweeting everything, charging stations are scarce and your battery WILL run out. HY: Plan your day then throw that plan away. SXSW is more fun when it spontaneous, plan your big stops and let the rest plan itself. And remember...Keep Austin Weird!

HY: There is always another way in. E8: It’s going to be a long day, get acquainted with the food trucks. Trust me, they’re delicious.

Changing The Game How DJ Green Lantern Is Breaking Down Barriers In Hip Hop BY STEPHANIE “ELEVEN8” OGBOGU

His extensive resume includes some of the largest, most respected names in hip-hop. He’s toured the world with Eminem, Jay Z & now serves as Nas’ official tour DJ. Many had no idea that although the Rochester native’s roots are heavily planted in hip-hop, his love to create music transcended genres. Eleven8: It seems like you’re always on the road. What’s it like to tour all the time? DJ Green Lantern: The good part [about touring] is seeing all the different places that people save up to go to, and I actually get paid to go there. The bad part is being away from my family. I try to bring them with me whenever possible though. E8: I’m fortunate enough to have seen you at work. You seem pretty calm on stage. How do you prepare yourself? GL: Nothing too crazy. I just get my little set list to-

gether , say a little prayer and get to it . E8: Which do you prefer, to tour, do mixtapes or spin at clubs? GL: I would say touring because I love going to different parts of the world and experiencing different cultures.. Plus I can make mixtapes while I’m on the road, gotta love computers . E8: I’ve got to ask. How did you transition from hip hop to EDM? GL: It’s more of an extension than a transition , be-

cause I still make/play Hiphop. I’ve always made different types of music, the only difference is now I’m releasing it. Before I just would play it for friends and myself . E8: Speaking of EDM, you performed at ULTRA MUSIC FEST last year, how was that? GL: Ultra was insane! The crowds were so crazy and the artist area was a yacht!! Great vibe!! E8: Since diving into the Trap/EDM world, what has been one of your greatest experiences? Watching GTA play this Jay-Z “Show Me What U Got” remix I made at HardFest and seeing the crowd go nuts. That was the 1st time I saw anyone play one of my tracks live at a festival and the response was so dope. I was watching it on the side of the stage with my family and friends and it was a surprise when it came on. I heard it and everyone turned to me like “ohhhhh!!” Good times bruh. E8: What would you say are the differences between hip hop fans and trap/edm fans?

GL: Electronic music fans are more focused on the music the producer makes than the raps , because there’s no raps . Lol E8: So, what projects are you working on? GL: I just released a song with Iggy Azalea and Valentino Khan thru Ultra records titled “Know About Me” so I’ve been promoting that lately. I have a gang of new music coming out too.. My plans (God willing) are to just put out good music and tour the world playing it for good people. Bless!
