On Yonge Street MASTER OF ARCHITECTURE THESIS University fof Waterloo School of Architecture 2010
abstract Yonge Street is a unique urban resource for the City of Toronto. It acts as the central nervous system uniting local, suburban and out-of-town populations with both surface and underground networks. It has transformed to adapt to fluctuating cultural, social climates and urban development projects. Many fragments can be found both within this major thoroughfareโs physical streetscape and in the hearts of many Torontonians. The largely generic street fabric found in the stretch between Queen and Bloor may lack in architectural integrity, but offers a spectrum of establishments that exhibit the diversity found in Toronto. The tension between these assorted venues is what gives the street both value and complexity despite their individual architectural modesty. It is a casual place in the city that speaks to the everyday citizen. Itโs eclectic and sometimes tawdry charm raises mixed reviews by locals and often confuses city bureaucrats. Many development strategies have been initiated in order to give the street a homogenized image and a public face However, it is in its informal ยฉ Elfie platform Kalfakis 2010 candidness where its value rests. This thesis claims that Yonge Street is a democratic urban built upon complex layers. The diverse, overlapping and kinetic happenings felt on the street are both

its strength and weakness. The rich experience is difficult to articulate using traditional urban design analysis. This thesis offers a new version of portraiture that seeks to illustrate the spirit of Yonge Street. Using unconventional mapping methods and visualisations, it will render qualities often difficult to express. Five portraits of Yonge Street are presented, inspired by five buildings: the Yonge-Bloor Subway Station, Sam the Record Man, Zanzibar Tavern, the Yonge Street Mission and Yonge-Dundas Square. BELOW GRADE FLOOR PLAN
GROUND FLOOR PLAN
The design inspiration stemmed from the idea of a loom and the dams of the Grand River in Waterloo Region. The building is designed as a passage thorough various rectilinear spatial conditions and built volumes that begin from the main road and run to a public courtyard flanking the Grand River. The courtyardรข€™s public garden connects to the Grand River trail, which runs along the Grand River Green Belt, and acts as the roof for the main textile galleries below. The design creates dialogues between public, private, exhibition spaces and the broader Waterloo Regional community. The project was taken from preliminary design phase to costing and considerations to building science & specifications. The final design was a silver LEED accredited building.

2ND PLACE WINNER, RARE SITING COMPETITION
SCSRi was a design ideas competition entry to RARE charitable reserve. The competition asked for a facility that combined two Waterloo region organisations: Musagetes Foundation (an urban arts organisation) and SiG@Waterloo (a research initiatve for Canadian social innovation). The design proposal incorporated the existing historic building and its surrounding natural preservation landscape. A compilmentary dialogue was created using simple materials and forms between old and new components of the property. The two programs encircled a fourseason pavilion centrally located in the design which extended into the landscape.
Rome Performing Arts Institute UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES Rome Studio, Waterloo School of Architecture 2007
The Rome Performing Arts Institute was created, both in program and building design, while studying in the University of waterloo School of Architecture Rome Studio. It was inspired by the cityรข€™s highly sensorial, organic and cinematic urban experience. The project incorporated the site of the derelict Mausoleum of Augustus Imperatore. It created both indoor and outdoor performance spaces open to the public. The centre of the mausoleum was re-approprated as the foundation for a rectilinear main flex theatre clad in a layered mesh facade. The complexity of the site was addressed using an undulating wood composite landscape that both engulfed and exposed the mausoleum. Within the landscape dance rooms and practices spaces opened onto street elevation. With the use of textured and coloured glass these spaces were showcased to the public.
Renzo Piano - IRCAM This project examines and iterates the sonic/user experience of Renzo Pianoรข€™s IRCAM in Paris, France. The physical wood based model is an analysis of the textural and spatial experience of descending from Platz Stravinsky at ground level into the research office tower, through the atrium and into the main acoustical chamber

This is a collaborative piece created with artist Lily Swain investigating the frameworks necessary for academic success and personal growth present in traditional instructional models of education as induction versus an unconventional model of education as transformation. The piece is divided into three parts. The first involving an exploration of traditional one room school houses in the form of a very technical drawing. The same drawing was then deconstructed. The final composition is a 3-Dimensional mobile that hoped to represent our mutual successes in the classroom. Being more interested in the process of creating our artifact, we filmed all three parts, and consolidated them into a film that illustrates the transformation of our piece. The soundtrack to our film was a mix of an instructional educational video, transitioning into student performance of Pachelbel Canon transforming into a symphony recording of the piece.
Ignus Fatuus igยทnus fatยทuยทus : A phosphorescent light that hovers or flits over swampy ground at night.
The premise of this project was to create a resonant chamber that expressed the acoustical experience of particular song. St. Germainโs song Montego Bay Spleen is a form of modern electronic jazz. A landscape was created using standard sewing pins imbedded in a incandescently lit slab of glycerine. The piece resonates the repose and discomfort experienced while listening to the song. The combination of the hazy, yet warm glycerine and the deceivingly soft pinned landscape, creates the machine-meets human quality typically heard in St. Germainโs music.
