hello
I AM DELIGHTED TO PRESENT one of my favourite issues of the year. It’s the real living Love List, our annual edit of products, places, spaces and collections that have caught the RL team’s eye in 2021. Want to know what we’ve been coveting, sharing and discussing? Here it is: our celebration of great design with lots of shopping, stylish conversation starters and a few travel destinations for your wishlist. Go ahead and flip straight to p101. What I love most about the August edition is that it gives the team a little extra creative license to pursue stories and ideas simply because we, well, love them. Here’s a glimpse behind the scenes: the bedroom decorating story on p124 was shot at a location that has inspired us for years. It’s an exercise studio, and some of us are regulars! And while we had the story on interior designer Jessica Schuster’s home (p56) planned in advance, we loved it so much we decided to organise a team on the other side of the world to shoot the cover with Jessica in her living room. Jessica is just one of the many inspiring women you’ll discover in this month’s magazine, and she’s in the company of extraordinary local talent. All of the homes and reno projects are designed by women, including the landscaped courtyard on p144. As I write this, I’m sitting at my dining table, my Labrador by my side. Being Sydney-based, the team and I have been working on this issue from home while in lockdown – it’s a scenario many of you are still all too familiar with. Times like this can be tremendously challenging, but I find optimism in the enduring passion, ingenuity and generosity of spirit that our creative communities continue to share. As Armadillo co-founder Jodie Fried sums it up in her interview on p154, design has the power to change the world.
In good shape I have a thing for arched entrances, including this curved doorway designed by architect Lucy Bowen for the home of an interior decorator. To see more of this Melbourne abode, turn to p44.

Moving into this minimal apartment coincides with her successful move into the wellness industry. A

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT Writing’s on the wall Motivational quotes are painted on the wall of the home office, which Norma shares with her partner Marty. Driver’s seats The chairs surrounding the white custom dining table are made from car hoods. Take the plunge The bathroom’s soaking tub was inspired by Norma’s love of Japan and Japanese design – she spent many years there. Point of view Norma made the most of her apartment’s river-facing aspect by removing walls and leaving those that remained bare. The building was designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron and American developer Ian Schrager. Bespoke boudoir Here, modular Mah Jong pieces by Roche Bobois are configured to form a bed with a bedhead. These sectional pieces can also be combined to create sofas. Bare your soul Norma, pictured, describes the energy in her new home as “restorative and creative”.
ONCE UPON A TIME, Norma Kamali was an avid collector of furniture, jewellery and fashion. An American designer and entrepreneur, Norma would be the first to tell you how extravagantly appointed her previous houses have been, but one day while working on a new collection, she had an epiphany – her decorative surrounds had become a distraction and her belongings were holding her back. If at first she was a disciple of maximalism, Norma is now a born-again minimalist and moving into this spacious glass-walled apartment with her partner Marty Edelman and dog Zeke marked a physical, and perhaps spiritual, transition. Norma’s new home is the definition of a clean slate. Located in New York’s West Village, the apartment is wrapped in floor-length windows with panoramic views of the city and Hudson River. Having that visual connection to the sky and water was “extremely important” to Norma, who says the interiors feel at one with the environment. “In a large city like New York, nature is hard to come by,” she explains. “So whenever there’s nature, there’s a feeling of wellbeing.” For Norma, who is in her seventies, wellness is a lifelong pursuit that starts at home, and having recently published the book I Am Invincible and launched the skincare line Normalife, she proves it’s never too late to make a change. This brings us back to her apartment, which gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘pared-back’. There’s no decorative objects or art except for motivational quotes printed on the wall of her office. Furniture has been downsized to the necessities – a dining table, dining chairs, a bench and a desk – and in the open-plan living space, armchairs are replaced with beanbags. Norma committed to “minimal detail, minimal furniture and blank spaces” to help clear her mind. “Having fewer possessions and living in a space where the most valuable asset is the water and sky takes less work to maintain, so you can spend more time on your purpose and potential,” she says. The minimal interiors also ignite her creativity, especially when she’s working from home. “The open space leaves room for ideas and I get to see colour in a new way, every day.” While owning less ‘stuff’ certainly means less time is spent cleaning and organising, Norma admits that yes, “simple is better, but simple is also harder to do!” For example, when she and Marty first viewed their apartment, it had four bedrooms, and turning it into a totally open-plan, one-bedroom loft required tearing down lots of walls. But knowing how they wanted to use the space and redesigning accordingly paid off for the couple. As Norma reflects, “open spaces in a city are a true luxury. It’s more important to me than decorative furniture and paintings.” So, what was the reason for using beanbags? “They’re easy to care for, comfortable and transformable,” Norma says simply. What’s more, she can rearrange her apartment on a whim because most pieces are mobile. With nothing but clean white walls, stainless steel surfaces and a few customisable furnishings, this home is the ultimate blank canvas for a creative looking for room to breathe. R

MODERN HIS T ORY
1913
photography courtesy of fornasetti; courtesy of cole & son (main image)
Painter, designer and artistic polymath Piero Fornasetti was born in Milan in 1913. Piero opened his atelier in 1940 and his work spanned printed books, frescoes, ceramics, furniture and home objects. In fact, Piero can be credited with creating over 13,000 products.
WHO IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN IN THE WORLD? If you’d asked the Italian designer Piero Fornasetti, chances are he’d have said Lina Cavalieri, a soprano whose face he turned into one of the most ubiquitous images in the world. As beguiling as the Mona Lisa, her beauty inspired Piero’s pièce de résistance: the Themes and Variations series. Piero Fornasetti was born to stand out. His career began with a bang when he was expelled from the Milan fine arts school Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera for insubordination in 1932. Unperturbed, Piero showed at a student exhibition at Milan University the following year and proposed a series of printed scarves to the Milan Triennale. It was at this time that Piero’s work caught the eye of Gio Ponti, an influential architect who appreciated Piero’s imaginative architectural decoration and graphic motifs, which referenced traditional Italian cultural elements. Gio’s designs provided the surface space for Piero’s decorative imagery, and they collaborated on ceramics, complete interiors and furniture, including the Achitettura trumeau. An archetype of Fornasetti design, this functional, albeit surreal, bureau looks like a model building and blurs the line between furniture and architecture. This brings us back to the Themes and Variations series. Like Architettura, these plates illustrated Piero’s whimsically nostalgic and tongue-in-cheek visual language. Every plate featured Lina’s perfectly proportioned visage and over time her facial expressions and costumes evolved. Upon Piero’s death in 1988, his son Barnaba began building the atelier’s legacy for a new era, and today it’s a paragon of production. Artisans employ handcrafted techniques to recreate original designs, plus new ‘reinventions’ of every imaginable home furnishing, which draw on the Fornasetti archive. This year, in fact, Barnaba worked with Louis Vuitton on womenswear inspired by the archive’s prints. You see, Fornasetti is more than a family atelier: it’s an ever-expanding universe. R
1951
Piero rose to popular success in the ’50s, with support from Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti. The Architettura trumeau is one of the duo’s artistic designs, manufactured in 1951. One of the first models is displayed in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and today, Fornasetti produce 15 pieces every year.
1952
In 1952, Piero began his Tema e Variazioni series of plates, or Themes and Variations. Every plate features an interpretation of the face of opera singer Lina Cavalieri. There’s now almost 400 variations with unique facial expressions as well as tattoos, glasses, hats and other surreal additions.
2021
Under Barnaba Fornasetti’s artistic direction, the atelier continues to draw on Piero’s iconography for new designs, like this vase. Comprising tableware, candles, lamps, furniture and rugs, Fornasetti decor is designed to be a conversation piece for every room.

Liberated pops of colour and texture bring light-hearted energy to this retail space A SPACE THAT FEELS PLAYFUL but not infantile, luxe but not inaccessible – this was the request that Lily Goodwin and Josh Cain of Pattern Studio received upon embarking on the fit-out for Reliquia Collective’s first retail space in Westfield Bondi Junction. “Our colour and material selections were bold and liberated, and we brought order and rationale through careful spatial planning within the store,” says Lily. Pastel hues and bright primary colours are paired with tropical pops of fluorescent yellow and kaleidoscopic metallics, while glossy twopack, metalwork and chunky wall render appear alongside opalescent shelving and dichroic glazing. It’s a dynamic arrangement of colour and texture that sounds overwhelming in theory, but is utterly delightful in reality. “The store’s footprint is actually quite petite, so furnishings were used sparingly and with great consideration,” says Lily. “One major element that allowed us to adopt such a bold design approach was that two of the four walls consist of floor-toceiling windows, making the space feel much larger than it is.” From the street, Reliquia Collective’s new home looks like an eclectic jewellery box. “We embraced a more-is-more attitude,” says Lily. “We wanted to carefully balance big, bright, fun energy without verging into the realm of cluttered chaos. The Reliquia Collective spirit celebrates the pleasure of beautiful, joyful objects, and the store, as well as the items housed within, aims to uplift customers and offer a moment of shimmering, shining relief from the mundane every day.” R @reallivingmag

who lives here? Artist and interior decorator Phoebe Rolleston, her husband George and their three boys, Humphry, 8, Louis, 6, and Will, 4. Phoeberolleston.com | @phoeberollestonart A
WHILE SOME HOME buyers would baulk at purchasing a house without a streamlined style, Phoebe and George Rolleston only saw potential in their circa 1980s home in Glen Iris Victoria. “The house had a very Japanese feel on the inside, and the outside looked like a Scandinavian lodge,” Phoebe recalls. “It also had a really strong ’80s vibe, which is an era I’ve always been drawn to. The quirkiness of the house appealed to us and the fact it had so much going on gave us the license and freedom to just keep adding to the mixed bag that it is!” TIME FOR CHANGE The couple and their three young sons lived in the home for six years before engaging architect Lucy Bowen of Lucy Bowen Design to oversee its renovation in 2019. In her brief to Lucy, Phoebe expressed her desire to retain the home’s endearing features while creating a relaxing, calm environment to combat the chaos of young family life. “Lucy and I were on the same page; we envisioned a relaxing family vibe, soft edges and a European feel,” she says. EXCITING ADDITIONS A new playroom, office area and pool house increase the home’s usability, while the living, dining and kitchen have been revitalised with textured finishes, including concrete, timber, sisal and travertine. Curved elements in the doors, island bench and furniture brought softness and generosity to the rooms, and walls were kept white to provide a backdrop for Phoebe and George’s colourful furniture selections and ever-evolving artwork collection. “I’ve always painted, and our art constantly changes depending on what I’ve bought, sold and collected,” Phoebe says. HAPPY OUTCOME Together, Phoebe and Lucy have created a functional space that works hard for a family. The spacious living area allows Phoebe, George and the kids to be together, albeit not on top of each other, and the outside areas enjoy a seamless connection with the indoors. “Having the separate play room means we can keep the living space neat and not overrun with toys,” Phoebe tells. The house serves as a constant source of inspiration for Phoebe, with its raised skirtings, indented shelving and garden views. But most notably, it hasn’t lost that charm and multifarious style that drew Phoebe and George to it all those years ago. R
Grey matters For her home’s floors, Phoebe experimented with different concrete colours to achieve the perfect warm grey. “As an artist, colour is extremely important to me,” she explains. Meanwhile, the dining room, with its Fenton&Fenton table, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe chairs from Anibou and large artwork by Oscar Perry from The Commercial Gallery, symbolises everything she and George love about their house. “The height of the ceilings, the shapes and the feel of this room are why we bought it to begin with, and it still has the same energy now,” Phoebe says.

Curves ahead “The entry is the breathing space of the house – not overly functional but a beautiful place to hang artworks and look into the front courtyard by Andrew Panton Design,” Phoebe explains. “Lucy drew inspiration from the existing curved staircase and took my brief of soft edges and indented shelving and ran with it.” The artwork is one of Phoebe’s pieces, the sisal carpet is from International Floor Coverings and the Casala chair was bought at auction from Leonard Joel. Custom showpiece Phoebe’s close friend Hugh McCarthy custom-made two timber sculptures for the house. “He designed these after visiting us one night and we absolutely love them. His craftsmanship is unbelievable and he’s incredibly creative,” she says. European flair Italian feature tiles, plaster-rendered benchtops and rattan-inset cabinetry give the kitchen (opposite) a Santorini-style aesthetic. “The Opinion Ciatti ‘Papavero Raggiante’ suspension lamp from Artemest is our favourite light fitting in the house,” Phoebe adds. Artistic influence The living area is comfy and colourful. “My aesthetic is definitely influenced by my mum, Annabelle Pobjoy, also an artist and interior designer, who has always had really homely homes with things collected over years,” Phoebe tells. “George and I both love antique furniture mixed with new but iconic furniture pieces.” Here, sofas from Sofa & Soul are piled high with cushions from Manon Bis and Brownlow Interior Design; Phoebe had the striped velvet cushion custom-made through her business Phoebe Rolleston Interiors. The Ligne Roset green velvet ottoman is from Domo, the rug is from Bayliss Rugs and Phoebe painted the small blue and large green artworks. A

simple secrets to blending design styles
1
Why limit yourself to one period or style when you can try a few? Create a considered edit of eras or looks for a home that’s unique to you.
@reallivingmag
52
2
It’s best to stick to no more than three design styles per room, working to a concise colour palette. Keep walls and floors neutral to tie it all together.
3
Repeat motifs or patterns within your mixture of aesthetics. Here, architect Lucy Bowen has used curved elements as a unifying feature.
4
Punctuate each room with at least one statementmaking find. For instance, a sculptural chair, an oversized plant or a vibrant artwork.

FROM FAR LEFT Pool party Bright yellow sunlounges from Ikea add a retro touch to the pool area by Shoreline Pools. Lucy Bowen designed the outdoor shower, which features Brodware tapware. “Our kids’ friends love coming over, which makes us all happy,” Phoebe says. Parents’ retreat “For our bedroom, we tried to create a calm space to escape the kids,” adds Phoebe. She custom-made the textural woven bedhead and painted the walls in Alto Paints First Light. The bedlinen is from Ikea, the vintage table lamp was bought at auction and the portraits are by James Govett. Step outside Humphry, Will, Louis and Phoebe stand at the oversized arched doors, which were designed by Lucy Bowen and lead to the travertine-paved entertaining area. Desk nook A corner of the living area has been utilised as a work space. “The desk is an old table that my mum cut down as a desk for us,” Phoebe says. The larger portrait of Iris Apfel is by Kate Carnegie. A

Italian design classics and colourful vintage pieces inspire a sense of optimism in this chic SoHo loft

who lives here? Jessica Schuster, founder of her eponymous interior design studio, and her French bulldog, Blue. Jessicaschuster.com | @jessieschuster
Suite talk “I wanted to allow the unique pieces of furniture to each have their moment, but still talk to each other despite their diversity,” says homeowner and interior designer Jessica Schuster. Her loft apartment’s living space is a perfect example, with its charismatic collection of vintage designs. She purchased the Mario Bellini ‘Camaleonda’ sofa at auction and had it reupholstered in mohair fabric. A pair of 1960s Harvey Probber club chairs make a bold impression in Clarence House ‘Tanzania Tigre’ fabric; so too does the bust from Casa Gusto on an Italian fluted wood pedestal from 1stDibs. The vintage Garouste & Bonetti coffee table informed the entire scheme. On top is a Gaetano Pesce ‘Nugget’ vase. A
WHEN JESSICA SCHUSTER WAS HANDED THE KEYS to this apartment in late 2019, she pictured herself hosting sparkling soirees and entertaining roomfuls of friends. “It had just been newly renovated and was in the heart of SoHo, which I loved,” Jessica recalls. What she hadn’t anticipated was a global pandemic that would lock down New York City and squash social plans, so Jessica, an interior designer, recreated that sense of joie de vivre by styling her home with optimism and an open mind. “I wanted to keep it fun and create an unusual environment that had personality and flair,” she says. “I was feeling the colour blue and wanted to inject that positivity and happiness with the use of other primary colours like red and yellow!” PERSONAL PROJECT Designing her own loft was quite an eye-opening experience for Jessica, who explains, “I wanted to do something that was a big departure from past projects. I find decorating for myself is a bit more challenging because as a designer I am exposed to so many new things – my taste is constantly expanding and my aesthetic is constantly evolving.” In the end, the palette was largely informed by the apartment’s natural light shortage. “I moved from a very bright West Village apartment to this beautiful pre-war building that was darker. I knew I would need to keep the loft light and bright to make up for the lack of natural lighting,” Jessica tells. Another element that inspired her direction was a coffee table from the ’90s by Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti, which is now the focal point of the living room. “The vintage coffee table is just a dream, so cool in both style and colour,” Jessica says admiringly. “I wanted the space to feel whimsical and surrealist and make a big statement.” ITALIAN INFLUENCE Given her undeniable talent for mixing unexpected elements, it’s not surprising that Jessica once worked for fellow American designer Kelly Wearstler. “I often incorporate pieces from different eras and love to see how they play off each other,” she says. “For this project I found myself drifting towards Italian influences. I love how even ‘modern’ pieces from the ’70s and ’80s encompass the incredibly rich classical history of Italian design.” Those Italian influences dominate the dining area, which features Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Molteni ‘Monk’ chairs and a vintage pendant by Italian designer Pietro Chiesa overhead. The theme continues in the living room, where a B&B Italia ‘Camaleonda’ sofa by Mario Bellini channels relaxed ’70s luxury. “Modern projects need the depth and history that vintage and antiques bring,” Jessica says of her design philosophy and passion for collecting. “Try things out – it’s better to always take the risk and see how it plays out than design the same thing over and over.” R Make an entrance In the foyer is a Hoof console by Rose Uniacke and a Tafla 04 mirror by Zieta Prozessdesign from 1stDibs. The display is complete with a vintage Billy Baldwin python leather footstool and vintage ’50s Dior vases. Self expression “With personal projects, I push myself to try new things, but the complete freedom can be tricky, versus when I’m working with a client, there’s a more clear directive,” Jessica tells. “And working for yourself means you’re not on a deadline, so things can take much longer!” Here, she’s pictured beside a decorative sconce from 1stDibs and an Andy Warhol artwork. Animal instincts Benjamin Moore paint in half/half Decorator’s White and Linen White was used on the open-plan foyer, living and dining space walls (opposite). A custom Makrosha rug defines the living zone; on the wall is another 1950s Jules Leleu sconce from 1stDibs. A

Play the blues While Jessica didn’t use much colour in her previous homes, she added blue accents to this apartment’s neutral base. In this corner of the living room is A Satisfying Entry Into the Self by Matthew Chambers, a ’70s Paco Rabanne ‘Space Curtain’ from 1stDibs and vintage Salvador Dali photograph. The Camaleonda seat is part of the modular sofa, which Jessica had reupholstered in Fisherman’s Fabrics ‘Dolce Alpaca’ in Biscuit. The lamp is from 1stDibs; the chair and stool are both vintage. Adelphi Paper Hangings ‘Strawberry Plaid Hill’ wallpaper decorates the white walls. Modern cuisine Jessica didn’t have to work on the renovated kitchen (opposite), which faces the dining and living areas. The Spin Swivel bar stools are Crate and Barrel; the tableware is vintage.

homes three ways to brighten a dark home
1
If your home doesn’t get a lot of natural light, paint the ceilings a true shade of bright white and decorate with rugs in light tones, which will help make dark spaces feel loftier and lighter.
2
Install streamlined window treatments. Swap heavy drapes and curtain valances for simpler designs such as Roman or roller blinds, as Jessica has throughout her home.
3
Jessica has been careful not to obstruct any windows with tall items such as bookcases, and she’s also left breathing room between windows and shorter furniture, such as her armchairs. A

Dine and design The connected kitchen, dining and living rooms are perfect for entertaining and enhance the home’s “loft-like vibe”. Of the dining room, Jessica says, “I used six Monk chairs by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Molteni around a custom travertine table. I hung a delicate Pietro Chiesa glass chandelier over it to juxtapose the solid table.” The ’60s sideboard is by Angelo Mangiarotti for Poltronova. To the left of the mirror from 1stDibs is Andy Warhol’s Russell Means; to the right is a Mattea Perrotta painting. The pink vase is by Paul Arnhold and the glazed ceramic tableware is from Casa Gusto. Elegant edit In the master bedroom (opposite) is a Louis XVI-style dresser with a marble top. The burl wood mirror is by Milo Baughman and the plaster bust is vintage. A

Material comforts Jessica balances sophistication with serenity in the master bedroom (top). On her Lawson Shelter non-tufted fabric bed from Restoration Hardware is a Society Limonta quilt and pillow by Madeline Weinrib. The Ligne Roset chair and footrest are in Olive fabric. On the wall is a Maria Noel artwork and a French doré bronze sconce; on the floor is a handwoven Turkish hemp rug. Calm & collected Vintage and antique collecting is a large part of Jessica’s design process, and her collection extends to the guest room (below). The c1890 Louis XVI gilt mirror is from Carl Moore Antiques and reflects a vintage Picasso scarf. Nearby is a Sycamore chair in the manner of Gio Ponti and vintage Murano glass lamp. A Serena & Lily ‘Northside’ quilt, vintage Moroccan blanket and burlap and leather ALT for Living cushions adorn the Community MFG ‘Mara’ bed.

THE OWNERS OF THIS NEWLY EXTENDED CALIFORNIAN BUNGALOW have two small and adventurous children, so they knew using light colours would be a bold design move. However, the couple, both of whom work full-time, decided that creating the right atmosphere at home trumped practical considerations. “They wanted a space that would help them unwind, with minimal clutter and fuss,” says interior designer Lucy Bock. They were also keen to make the most of the natural light that pours into the home’s double-height extension through floor-to-ceiling windows. In response, Lucy suggested incorporating an uncommon colour: grey. “A light grey can bring a wonderful softness to a space, and it’s a way to make white elements pop,” she explains. PLACE OF WORSHIP The couple’s architect had drawn up a preliminary floor plan for the extension with a dramatic cathedral ceiling. It was Lucy’s job to develop the plan into functional zones before beginning work on the interior design. “The clients and I agreed on a pared-back approach that would allow them to fully appreciate the beautiful architecture,” she says. That meant a grey, white and pastel palette, smooth, sophisticated materials such as marble and Japanese tiles, and no furniture beyond the essentials. “Even artwork was kept to an absolute minimum, so the simple geometries of the interior could be enjoyed,” Lucy says. ROUGH AND TUMBLE Although they prioritised aesthetics from the outset, the couple did want a home that, in Lucy’s words, “was robust and would stand the test of time”. Selecting durable materials was key, from the concrete flooring and generous slabs of Gioia marble in the kitchen to the wool rugs and tough upholstery. To maintain a light and pure look, wood was used sparingly. The exceptions are the timber dining chairs that create a link between the home’s new extension and the floorboards in the original bungalow. “They were also a subtle way to add warmth,” Lucy says, pointing out that, when working with grey, subtlety is key. how to use grey tones effectively
1
While pure grey is considered a neutral colour, most common greys are actually subtly cool. Keep this in mind when building the rest of your interior palette.
2
For a scheme that’s soothing but not drab, select multi-toned grey materials, such as the concrete flooring and the sofa upholstery in this family home.
3
Grey rooms shine in natural light, but can feel gloomy after dark. The solution: plenty of lamps and sconces with warm bulbs fitted. A

IN A QUIET LONDON STREET (around the corner from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s house), this stucco-fronted home is unassuming as they come. But step inside the townhouse that gallery owner Nathalie Assi shares with her husband and three children, and its true magic is revealed. The five-storey abode doubles as a showroom for Nathalie’s design business SEEDS, and as such, striking conceptual objects mingle happily with the family’s furniture and possessions. “Design is part of our lives,” says Nathalie simply. “We sit on the chairs, serve dinner on the ceramics; the children do their homework at the coffee table.” WORLDS COLLIDE The idea for the home gallery sprouted when Nathalie began renovating the 19th century home in 2014. “I always envisaged it as a calm, cohesive setting for work and family,” says Nathalie, who worked with architect Carole AsfourLin to redesign the interior. They added a glass extension at the back to house a dining room and study area, and incorporated sliding pocket doors in the living areas for flexibility. “I can shut off the sitting room and it becomes a gallery. In the afternoon, when the children are back, I open it up. The transition happens every day,” Nathalie tells. The ability to open or close off areas means the family can seek out privacy or togetherness as required. “It allows us to have different moments for different moods,” she explains. “We can have a barbecue in the garden, read a book in the sitting room or use the study when we want to concentrate.” BUYER EXPERIENCE The base palette has been kept deliberately restrained – walls in cool greys and soft pinks, subtle oak flooring – so as not to overshadow Nathalie’s curation of furniture, ceramics, lighting and mirrors by contemporary makers, which are displayed for collectors to view by appointment. “Some of this work is quite experimental, but when clients see it in a domestic setting it feels more approachable,” she explains. Plus, being able to sit, touch and use objects makes for a greater connection. “I feel that the definition of luxury is changing,” Nathalie says. “We’re looking for things that make us think – and dream. Learning about a maker’s ideas and techniques creates an emotional connection you can’t have with a mass-produced object.” R

Pillar candles by Lex Pott are dotted along the table’s surface, lit from above by a slender Franz West pendant. “The children understand that it’s important not to destroy things around them; that we have to be careful but not too precious,” Nathalie explains. Come together A family room with a low veneer coffee table by Francois Dumas flows into the adjoining kitchen (opposite). “As a family, we often spend time in the open kitchen space, where cooking, homework, reading and lounging all happens concurrently and brings us together after a day of school or work,” Nathalie tells. FROM LEFT Point of difference A Glas Italia ‘Shimmer’ side table takes centre stage in this newly designed open-plan living and dining area, where custom cabinetry has been installed to provide storage, seating and display opportunities. Full circle Annular onyx wall sconces from L’Aviva Home echo the soft undulations seen throughout, while providing a subtle change of texture. “The lighting serves as both a practical and sculptural element to create a strong visual,” says interior designer Cassie James-Herrick. Beyond the surface “The owners wanted a grey-focused palette that incorporated their favourite white kitkat tiles and natural stone for its beauty and practicality, so we selected a very hardy natural granite,” says Cassie. “As the kitchen isn’t large, the integrated appliances streamline the area to make it feel more spacious than it really is. The use of natural materials creates movement and warmth, while soft, white furnishings and curtains provide tactility and layers.” Bar stools upholstered in faux fur balance out the kitchen’s hard surfaces. A

135
A CONTEMPORARY UPDATE THAT PRIORITISED functionality and enhanced natural light was the brief interior designer Cassie James-Herrick was given when she met the owners of this heritage home in Melbourne. “With young children, ample storage was necessary, but the client was happy to reduce the kitchen size to create a more open-plan living space that would harness natural light and a connection to the rear garden,” Cassie says. “The existing home was made up of smaller, busy spaces that the family wanted simplified in this renovation.” With the help of building firm KABSAV Projects, the home’s layout was revised and the interiors given a sympathetic face-lift, with surfaces such as natural stone, timber and tiles chosen for their robust and practical nature. Custom cabinetry appears in most rooms to supply extra storage, with appliances integrated where possible to ensure a seamless and clutter-free finish. “Ornate detailing and cornices were retained and reinstated, then paired with more contemporary additions, such as large steel windows, new lighting that plays on traditional elements and a minimal material palette,” Cassie tells. “Timber floors were selected to add warmth and the tiles bring additional texture, which we softened by applying them to curved elements in the design.” The home’s original hard-lined and linear architecture has been subdued through the implementation of curves and arches, which appear in door frames, cabinetry detailing and structural changes of the home. The end result is a calming environment that remedies the chaos of family life, without compromising the texture-rich and sophisticated aesthetic requested. R

Light bulb moment “Lighting in this home is very important, from the custom-made pendant in the dining area, to the pieces I sourced internationally for the rest of home – all were selected intentionally,” says Cassie. In the kitchen and dining area, downlights illuminate workspaces, a Nightworks Studio wall sconce provides ambience and a bespoke pendant by Giffen Design zones the eating area. The timber dining table from Ikea and Moller #78 woven chairs ensure varied materiality within the minimalist scheme. Visual harmony Large-format wall and floor tiles were used in the bathroom (opposite) an an uninterrupted finish, with the same granite from the kitchen repeated in the bathroom for thematic continuity. “The owners wanted black tapware, however, it was quite strong against the rest of the palette, so we used it sparingly and mixed the matte black with white steel and hardware elements,” says Cassie. FROM LEFT Jump start In the living room, boucle armchairs and a Tacchini ‘Sesann’ sofa were selected for their gentle yet sculptural forms that contrast with the linear architecture of the home. “The artwork really gives this room a huge hit of colour,” says Cassie of the striking Andy Harwood piece leaning against the wall. A rose-hued Pulpo side table and blue coffee table by Coco Flip tap into the tones within this artwork, increasing the energy level of the living area. Master of disguise Painting furniture and cabinetry in the same hue as the walls helps the space feel larger and clutter-free. Mixed bag A variety of textures ensure a monochromatic scheme never feels bare or boring. This home showcases everything from timber and stone to slick ceramics and powder-coated steel while adhering to the strict tonal colour scheme. A

Dream machine “The minimal palette was applied differently across each space,” Cassie says. “There is a key thread to the design, yet each space is unique and interesting in its own right.” An Atollo table lamp brings a spherical element into this bedroom. Self care zone The freestanding bath (opposite, left) has been laid with the same kitkat tiles used in the kitchen and positioned in front of the granite slab to become a sculptural centrepiece. Au naturale Generously sized windows fill the bathroom with natural light (opposite, right). A matte black towel rail from Linear Standard breaks up the sparse expanse of the walls.
Grounding force Black is used as an anchoring element, adding a subtle sense of depth and weight without overpowering the room.

HOLDING COURT
Screen time Fast growing and non-invasive, Slender Weavers bamboo is a great screening option that thrives in sun or shade.

outside
Green scene Landscape designer Kathleen Murphy incorporated lush greenery of varying heights, rugged steel, bluestone pavers and Merbau timber decking to create a harmonious garden for the young family who live here. “The courtyard is viewed from all living areas, so it needs to look great all year round,” she explains. Wild abandon Unbridled strawberries trail luxuriantly over the rigid edges of the garden bed. Heat source The steel fireplace by Tait Decorative Iron (opposite) extends the garden’s use significantly. “We spent a lot of time designing this unique piece and it really is a special part of the garden,” Kathleen says. A
YOU DON’T NEED A MASSIVE BACKYARD to enjoy the many perks of outdoor living, as this multipurpose courtyard so proficiently proves. “The owners wanted a garden that would encourage their two young boys to get off technology and get outside, while giving the adults a space to unwind after work,” explains landscape designer Kathleen Murphy. She began by painting the boundary fences of varying heights and styles in one unifying shade of charcoal grey: Dulux Monument. Along one side, quick-growing Slender Weavers bamboo was planted for its screening abilities, and underplantings of Liriope and New Zealand Rock Lily were chosen to withstand the resulting dry, shaded conditions of the bamboo. Tiered Corten steel garden beds were a great space-saving inclusion, creating a layered effect that helps the area feel lush and larger than what it really is. Some of these raised beds are reserved for herbs and vegetables and have been instrumental in establishing a greater connection with nature for the children. “The kids are constantly trying new vegies to grow, and love nurturing them along from seed,” Kathleen says. A custom fireplace is the standout star feature. Constructed out of heavy gauge Corten steel by local artist Neil Tait, it extends the use of the garden into evenings and through winter, and doubles as a pizza oven. “It can be removed if the family move, and the sides are engineered so the heat won’t burn young children if they touch it accidentally,” Kathleen adds. She’s also included levelled surfaces for scooter rides and a patch of Tall Fescue turf for rough and tumble play. Cantilevered timber seating, beanbags and a table setting for two accommodate groups of all sizes. The best part? This hardworking area takes just three hours to maintain per month. “Most plants are evergreen, with only the maples losing their leaves in autumn, and we’ve used stone mulch instead of bark at the perimeter, so birds don’t flick material onto the paving,” Kathleen explains. Which simply means more time to sit back and enjoy. R

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT Vegie medley Herbs and vegetables provide an endless source of entertainment for the two young boys, not to mention seasonal interest. “Bright coloured yellow and red chard brightens up the space in winter,” Kathleen tells. Colour statement Two Japanese maples (Acer sango kaku) were selected for their striking red stems and contrast against the rusty hued steel. Time to relax “The adults of the family like nothing more than to light the fire and have a cold drink while catching up on the day’s events,” Kathleen says. Training ground Liriopes were chosen for their hardiness and long-lasting purple flowers; an espaliered lemon and lime tree will fill the wall with fruit and greenery. What a steel Corten steel was quick to install and provided the perfect amount of depth and contrast in this green space (opposite).
