Top tip

For extra vintage vibes, sand off some of the paint on the edges of the picture frame. You will need

● Wooden frame ● Plywood ● White paint ● Chalkboard paint ● Undercoat or primer paint ● Moulded hardwood bead ● Hacksaw ● Panel pins ● Glue ● Framer’s tape ● Decorative moulding

1Measure the inside of the frame and cut a piece of plywood to fit inside the opening. Remember to use plywood that is slightly thinner than the recess inside the frame. Measure across the width of the opening – this will be the length of decorative moulded bead you’ll need. Use a small hacksaw to cut a length of the moulded hardwood bead to the correct size.

2Apply an undercoat or primer to one side of the plywood, the moulded bead and the frame. Once dry, apply a second coat and then a third if required. After the primer has dried, work out the space required for the chalkboard by positioning your decorative moulding (do not stick). Mark the line of the bead to separate the chalkboard area from the decorative top section.

3Paint the frame, bead, decorative moulding (if required) and top section of the plywood in white paint. Paint the bottom part of the plywood in chalkboard paint. Wait for these to dry, sand with sandpaper, then apply a second coat.

4Assemble the board by putting the plywood into the frame and adding small panel pins around the edge, being careful not to split the plywood or the frame. If you are using a narrow frame, use glue instead of panel pins. Tape around the edge with framer’s tape.

5Glue on the bead to cover where the chalkboard and white paint meet and affix the decorative moulding in place.
