To Whom It May Concern: I would like to take the opportunity to give my recommendation for Elias Payne. As the Associate Director at the University of Georgia Wesley Foundation, I have had the privilege of working with and leading Elias during his last two years with our organization, and I sincerely believe that he is a qualified candidate for this opportunity. Elias has been involved with the Wesley Foundation during his years at the University of Georgia, and he is currently in his second year on our leadership program. In his years in our program, he has shown a zeal to serve and lead others in our music and mentoring areas of ministry. He has demonstrated proficiency both in leading and being led. Elias is passionate about doing things with excellence, and he has proven that throughout his time with us at Wesley. He always pays great attention to details and is willing to sacrifice in order to accomplish the task at hand. He will refine and perfect his projects until he senses that they are the best that they can be. He is willing to help out wherever needed and does so selflessly. This is a great help to us, as he is highly creative and is able to produce dynamic ideas; he is an “ideator at its finest. Elias leads by example, but he does so without pretense. He has led fellow student leaders in meetings and events, and he consistently communicates enthusiastic vision for tasks and projects. He is relational in his leadership style without compromising the goals and mission of the group. Among his peers and supervisors, he is highly esteemed and well-liked. I have seen him function to a high degree while being the point person and also while being a team member. He has excellent interpersonal relationship skills and communicates with clarity. It is clear that he lives with humility and receives direction and correction well. He asks clarifying questions when needed so that he is able to complete tasks to his best ability. Because of these qualities, he is a joy to have on a team; we trust him immensely.
I fully believe that Elias possesses everything needed to excel in your firm. He will work with passion, excellence, and character. We have enjoyed him in Athens, and I hope you get to enjoy him as well. Sincerely, Mellisa Martinez DeRamus, Associate Director University of Georgia Wesley Foundation mellisa.deramus@gmail.com

.01 SOUTHERN B R E W I N G C O. Group Project: Elias Payne + Taylor Farrignton Location: 231 Collins Industrial Blvd Athens, GA 30601 United States Fall - 2018 Southern Brewing Company, located in Athens Georgia, is deeply devoted to its craft and to the people they proudly serve within their community. Athens GA is home to a rich and diverse blend of cultures, and that same vibrant spirit can be seen within the cities brewing culture. This vibrant community focusssed craftmanship can be found at SBC. As their company looked at growing their on-site facilities to accomodate more customers, better reach their community, and for greater production, they desired to create a more inviting beer garden for their customers to enjoy. The design approach we created alongside the SBC team focused on creating greater connectivity between their large open spaces, creating shareable spaces for social media marketing, ammeding on site water run off issues, and creating a cohesive four-fold plating approach to address both functional and aesthetic needs.

SOUTHERN BREWING CO. SITE MASTER PLAN Graphic Process: Autocad linework exported into sketchup. Renderings done with hand graphics and post processed in photoshop. The overall approach to the design process had to be done with careful consideration to the understanding that SBC had future plans to phase in more on site facilities to accomodate for greater beer production and distribution. Becasue of this, the re-design is heavily concentrated on the area directly behind the facilities main warehouse rear doors and bar. This also allowed for open lawn space to be used in the meantime for field games, family activities, and space for dogs. One feature the space

was lacking was a feeling of interconnection between its smaller spaces and it suffered from far too much exposure to the elements. Our design solves this with its smaller more intimate spaces for guests, connected thorugh decking and pervious paving with ample shade provided by larger trees and hops covered pergolas. These spaces help to create an overall greater experience for customers while also addressing many of the functional and aesthetic concerns SBC voiced.

FOUR FOLD PLANTING WITH A PURPOSE Graphic Process: Full rendering done in photoshop and post processed in illustrator. One of the key features of the redesign of this project was a four fold planting approach, aimed at remediating and re-implementing a planting pallet that met the aesthetic and functional desires of the SBC crew as well as the sites natural requirements.

PRODUCTIVITY
HARDINESS
MANAGEMENT
Carefully chosen plants like the trellised hops vines and the relocated existing fruit trees, used for yeast harvesting, allow SBC to source some of their brewing ingredients directly on site for special small batch brews.
Choosing plants that establish and mature quickly and can take a beating was very important for this site because of the heavy traffic it receives from its visitors. Lots of larger grasses such as pinky mhuly, blue fescue, and rosemary sages were chosen for their quick establishment, beautiful color pallets, and their hardiness under disturbance.
Along the eastern side of the site and the building edgess, a low swale was casuing considerable drainage issues and water was failing to infiltrate. We implemented a dense pallete of plants that can take the standing water along with pervious pavers to help with quicker infiltration.
.04 AESTHETICS The most successful planting designs are those that are not only functional, but also aesthetically pleasing. This beer garden was chosen to make its visitors want to grab another beer and take in the fragrance and color variation. With a functional, balanced, and seasonal pallet, SBC will look great any time of year.

PLACE MAKING IN THE BEER GARDEN
Graphic Process: Autocad linework exported into sketchup. Renderings done with hand graphics and post processed in photoshop. Another key feature of this design, was the creation of intimate spaces and shareable spaces through social media marketing. The Southern Brewing Company wanted to create more seating space where customers could engage with one another feeling like they have their own space, all the while, without feeling disconnected from the rest of the site. These spaces had to have clear lines of visibility and access by SBC staff to ensure safety of guests and to meet regualtions. The existing site had little congruency and connection between its spaces and guests lacked a sense of connection to the site and the brewery itself. With this new design, customers can enjoy their company in well shaded pleasant and unique spaces all the while feeling like they have a sense of place in the overall Southern Brewing Company.

.02 OCEANSIDE PLAZA Individual Project Location: Coastal Georgia Fall - 2018 Oceanside Plaza is a 10,000 square foot plaza located in the coastal Georgia region. It is surrounded by mixed use business and retail spaces and has access to the beach directly adjacent to the property. In additon to taking the sites existing conditions and location into account, the entire design had to be uniquely inspired by the radial from. The radiak form’s intrinsic design implications and characteristics were utilized through this plaza’s design to create a unique and inviting plaza to connect its visitors to the development surrounding it, as well as the lands natural features.
.12
EXPLORATION OF THE RADIAL FORM IN NATURE AND HISTORY Graphic Process: Hand rendering post processed through illustrator and photoshop.
The design process started by looking at the radial form and its presence and significance throughout the natural world and through human hisory both sociall and culturally. This exploration helped to highlight he unique ways nature and mankind has used this form and why. After exploring its unique design characteristics I began looking at asymmetrical and symmetrical raidial forms and the ways they contrast and compliment one another through their interactions. Utilizing the forms natural benefits in the site helped to inform the function and the inspiration behind the sites final design.
.13
DESIGN PROCESS AND INSPIRATION Graphic Process: Hand rendering overlayed with trace and post processed in phtoshop + illustrator. Uniquely assocaited with this coastal site, my research showed me that the ocean, holding some of hte worlds oldest and most unique creatures, is full of radial forms, both symmetrical and asymmetrical. I wanted to pull this costal connection into the theme and design of this plaza. By overlaying series of trace that combined a balance of asymmetrical and symmetrical radial forms, I eventually landed on the use of the nautilus shell as my main source of asymmetrical radial inspiration through the design of this site.

Oceanside’s nautilus inspired final design utilizes the natural forms asymmetrical curvilinear aspects, overlaid on a more symmetrical radial set of paths diverging from the center of the nautilus shell, to bring balance, direction, and circulation that pull people through the site while also giving a subtle nod to its proximity to the coast.

.03 NORTH OCONEE RIVERWAY + CHAIN GANG BREWING CO. Individual Project Location: 187 Wilkerson Street Athens, GA 30601 Spring- 2019 This 6 acre site is a prime Athens location with ÂŤClassic CityÂť potential. Just steps away from the University of Georgia, the mixed use Athens Downtown District, and direct access to the North Oconee River and Firefly Trail system that runs right through the site, and through the heart of Athens. The design approach to this site focussed heavlily on fostering connectivty and community here in Athens. This is made possible through its increased connectivty to, and awareness of, the North Oconee River natural resources, as well as the sites connectivity to existing regional multi-use trail systems like the Firefly Trail. Community and connectivity are also highlighted through the creation of mixed use retail/buisness and various recreation opportunities and amenities available on the site as well as those already existing adjacent to the site.
.18
.03 CONNECTIVITY
One of the main desires for this sight and its riverway was the connection it provided to the well used Regional Firefly Trail system and down town amenities. Part of our initial exploration involved overlaying and examining various connection points and opportunities to these other local and regional favorites.
.02 SURROUNDING USE With a well established downtown center and surrounding mixed use areas, it was important for the design approach to explore what sort of economic opportunities could be capitalized on through this site that arent as accessible in the surrounding areas and what sort of zoning types were directly on and surrounding the site.
.01 EXISTING FEATURES
To begin with, we took inventory of various natural and built existing features. We used this information to best determine areas for future development and protection and what sort of existing features we wanted to highlight and what additions/modifications needed to be implimented.

Graphic Process: Autocad linework brought into photoshop. Rendering done digitally through pohtoshop on a wacom tablet. The overall masterplan features a new brewery + bike shop to service bikers and the community with the newest local classic city spot for families and friends to gather. The riverway runs alongside the rivers entire length on the site. At either end there are trail heads to link up to the sites surrounding trail systems. These trail heads also serve as docking areas for kayakers seeking to enjoy the river in warmer months. In addition to the trail system, two basketball courts and a playground with ample open space were implimented to help serve and reach out to many of the single family housing units, as well as the mixed-use college luxury apartments zoned on either side of the site without recreation ammenities.

CHAIN GANG BREWING COMAPNY AND BIKE SHOP Graphic Process: Perspectives and logos created and rendered in photoshop and illustrator. The staple feature of this site is its addition of the Chain Gang Brewing Company and Bike Shop. If Athens culture is thriving in any area, its within its craft beer culture. With this bike themed brewery’s proximity to downtown and riverside views, this spot will be a destination for bikers, families, and friends to come sit and enjoy a good craft beer. With so many bikers coming in on the Firefly Trail and in the proximity of down town, there also needs to be a good bike shop to service their needs on that side of town. This site keeps beer and bike enthusiasts enjoying life behind bars.
.21
.22
.23
RIVER ACCESS + RECREATION OPPORTUNITIES Graphic Process: Perspectives and logos created and rendered in photoshop and illustrator. In addition to the brewery, one other main focus through the design of this site was increasing recreation opportunities and increasing awareness and interaction with the North Oconee River. Increasing access to the river not only creates new opportunities for recreation like kayaking, but it also increases our awareness of the natural systems around us. Opening up access at this site to enjoy the beauty of this natural waterway will help to change the lens through which this river is seen and shift it from something to be hidden or mitigated through development, to a highly desired and enjoyed amenity.

15 LANDSCAPE DOCUMENTATION THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY + FIELD SKETCHES Individual Exploration
Location: American Southwest The world around us is full of beautiful people and landscapes, both of which are ever changing subjects with stories to tell. One of my favirite passions is traveling. As I have traveled, I have begun to apply my skills I have learned as a studying landscape architect to document and capture the spaces and the people I share them with. Capturing even a fragment of a moment or a place between the black lines of a sketch allows me to hold onto a piece of that place and its memory forever, and hopoefully, it will help to recreate spaces that tell stories also.
