BIO I am an Italian MA architect recently graduated cum Laude at Politecnico di Milano. During 2016 I worked at NAAD practice in Kyoto (JP) and at Svendborg Architects in Copenhagen (DK). My master thesis ROPES OF LIFE - started in 2016 at Kyoto University - is a research project, located in Aokigahara suicide forest, investigating through-out an interdisciplinar y approach how architecture could interact with society, something unconventional and unexploited.

The space is conceived as a white canvas where light interacts with the different surfaces and materials in order to move from a unique space to multiples spaces. It first started as a small apartment and then transformed, for a year, in a collective art studio where people have been working and creating. The flexibility of the space, based on light settings and minimal furnitures, allows the users to define their own workspace and light source through a remote.

Three-hundred ropes are tightened each year from tree to tree, like modern Ariadne’s threads in what we could define the largest natural maze in the world. Raised spontaneously in 864 BC above a magmatic drag, which unable whatever kind of orientation tools, Aokigahara’s forest is passed to history as the suicide forest. A wooden warning sign is positioned as a jamb at the entrance of this place, historically and socio-culturally soaked, in a country that boasts (so to speak) one of the highest world suicide rate. Could this be the answer that such an avant-garde country, as much as rooted in its traditions, gives to one of the most influencing problems of its own? Japanese architecture - Mecca for the most renowned artists - conceal between the sequentiality of the spaces, its materiality and the designed atmospheres the ability to manipulate human emotions. Is suicide though - considering the extremity of the gesture and its complexity at sociological and psychological level liable to deviation by architecture?

From the empty area facing the ‘Grande Vestibolo’, ancient monumental entrance of the Villa, the project proposes an architecture thought as a natural extension of the same Vestibolo, subverting the character of this space, highlighting the empty spaces and fulfilling them. The Pavillion works as spa and exposition, it’s a stereotomic volume which supports the fountain placed in coverage: this reveals the complexity of the rooms below - ordered along the longitudinal axis - through the articulated drawing of its shapes. The Latin word Iter emphasizes the relation between the linear structure of the pavillion with its mixed function of spa (salus) and permanent exibithion space (ars). The ensemble of these three words generates the concept related to the branding.

In a delicate 18th century context where the materials are perfectly balcanced one with the other, nothing should be changed and nothing should be added. The necessity to reconnect the two part of the building generates then a paradox. The materials of this project aim to solve it, conceptualizing the diasppereance of architecture through its material consistency. When the architecture create a physic limit, then the mirror prestige occour. The idea is to make the added elements disappear, reflecting the existing materials and forms, its one and only recognizability is due to the deformation of the reflected images. In turn, this create a picturesque effect, related to the the 18th century landscape design.
