PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PORFOLIO
MA Graphic Design Arts University Bournemouth 2019-2020
Elif Ara
Hello! I am Elif, a graphic designer/ illustrator from Turkey. The sketches that I drew in between classes during my high school education helped me choose a career in design. My design adventure started in 2014 in the department of architecture at Bilkent University. After four years as an architecture student with great pleasure from every moment, the classes related to graphic design I took during my undergraduate education pique my interest and i found myself to devote more time for this field. I decided to pursue a career in graphic design, a field that focuses on visuals that I always enjoy doing and the opportunity to communicate directly with the target audience. I graduated from Arts University Bournemouth, MA Graphic Design course on September 2020. Now as a graphic designer I am enthusiastic about creating visuals that will have an impact on people’s lives. I believe that the visuals play a very important role in our subconscious. Therefore, I strive to produce visuals worth seeing because we expose millions of visuals in our everyday life. I'm fluent in using computer software, and also quite interested in exploring traditional techniques like screen-printing, handmade collages and hand drawing. Additionally, my master education has increased my interest in the field of motion graphics and videography, now I want to improve myself professionally in these areas. I have been involved in many local and international volunteering projects for the last 8 years and these projects have made me the person who I am today. My aim in graphic design is to produce works that can reach the masses to evoke the humanitarian feelings that buried under people’s personalities. During my master’s degree, I have been working on issues related with the problems in third world countries. I want to involve projects in advertising campaigns or TV commercials to raise awareness about those people living in disadvantages areas to be a voice of them.

Project 1 Visual Metaphors
About
2019-2020
This brief is based on the assumption that we understand individual concepts, ideas, or objects by locating them within broader frames or scenarios. ‘Choose a familiar object and define the frame or scenario to which it belongs. Although the object may be familiar take a little time to describe the scenario. How does the object function within the scenario or frame in which it belongs. Once you have a description try and find an elegant or witty way to disrupt the scenario through the design of an object so the scenario is disrupted.’
SCENARIO: You need to wear more appropriate clothes before you start. Ventilate the room and clean up the floor before placing it. You can do it outside as well. When you feel yourself ready to start, lay it on the floor. Whether you sit down or stand on it, whichever you feel more comfortable yourself. Before you take your position, you can put some cozy music as background. Take a deep breath and discover the boundaries of your body and soul.
VISUAL METAPHOR: The scenario describes ‘yoga mat’. The way I try to create visual metaphor is reinterpreting the relationship between yoga mat as an object which has very thin section, and very famous human description by Le Corbusier, used in architecture.

Yoga Mat: Yoga mat is the only tool needed for practice. It must provide ample cushion for knees, hips, and fingers. The idea behind yoga mat is that it must support the body to be balanced and not to be slippery. Mats for the practice of yoga come in a variety of lengths. Practitioners choose a yoga mat based on their preference and comfort level. However still there are some features which yoga mats have. In terms of size, yoga mat should cover head, pelvic and abdominals which is called core. According to these inputs and considering the standart height of human, The standard yoga mat dimensions were determined as 172.2 cm to 60.96 cm. (Hanley, K. )

Le Modulor: Le Corbusier’s System to Re-ordering universe: Swiss born French Architect Le Corbusier developed a system is called ‘Le Modulor’ which is an anthropometric scale of proportions. The systems based on human measurements like the double unit, golden ratio etc. This concept is a big issue in architecture to understand the relationship between human and building scale. Le Corbusier described it as a “range of harmonious measurements to suit the human scale, universally applicable to architecture and to mechanical things”. With ‘The Modular’, Le Corbusier point out an important matter that the human should be the centre of design. (Buzzi. F, 2017)

Le Modulor was published in 1950 and after meeting with success, Le Corbusier went on to publish Modulor 2 in 1955. In many of Le Corbusier’s most notable buildings, including the Chapel at Ronchamp and the Unite d’habitation, evidence of his Modulor system can be seen. These two volumes form an important and integral part of Le Corbusier’s theoretical writings. Fig 8:The cover of Le Modulor

Initial Posters:
Primary Metaphors: - Hiding is obsuring. - Privacy has barriers / enclosures. - Action is self-propelled motion. - Privacy is bounded. - Privacy is non-transparent.
Design Idea: All people have the right to have their privacy. However, in modern time it is hard to protect personal data from companies and governments which uses these data every day. However, before the technological era started privacy was a concept which the limitations and boundaries are not invisible from other people’s perspective. Unfortunately, with the advancing technology, the edges become visible, and significant part of these data are not well preserved by social networks, companies and governments. On the poster, privacy has been on the left sight as well before the surveillances and sharing data with companies. In time privacy become visible with the name of companies like Google, Facebook, Instagram etc.

2019-2020
Typefaces are everywhere! On signs, newspapers, televisions, books, walls! Serif, sans serif, slab serif, script, decorative and more. Is it possible to say that some fonts are more reliable than others according to their usage? Aim of the research was to define similarities and differences in modality markers across male, female, LGBTQ+ magazines.
Group Members: Elif Ara, Mansi Rana, Preethika Asokan, Rita Haddad, Yue Chen, Zheng Shi Hui
Research Question: What are the modality markers for typography in advertisements in magazines that focus on men, women and LGBTQ+ audience?
Theory: Social semiotics, particularly the truth value of semiotic resources. Kress and van Leeuwen (1997) investigated the truth value of pictures, this project explores the truth value of the visual qualities of typography.
Definition: The purposes of this project truth is defined as: The correspondence between the visual characteristics of typography and gender and sexual orientation in mags.
Methodology: Select data: Advertisements in three different categories of magazines Coding 1: Exhaustively analyse data to identify typographic characteristics Coding 2: Compare and consolidate codes (modality markers) emerging from 1 Coding 3:Assign values to modality markers and establish modality configurations

Mapping Information: Information, Association and Representation: Otto Neurath Neurath, teacher, socialist, philosopher, economist, politician, bureaucrat, spent most of his life in Wien, lived between 1882-1945. At a time when the whole World was in crisis, he was living in the geographical center of the events which lead him to think to social order, economy and science. The production of scientific knowledge as well as a philosopher of science beyond being a bureaucrat has been an important issue in a manner that shape their work to both reach audiences and serve the community. This effort pushed Neurath to reflect on the visual representation of information and a strong representation of the political stance it belongs to.

Their work is done for streets, galleries, web, newspapers and magazines and to conduct workshops that improve people's skills and help them visually express their thoughts about what is happening in the world. The study was carried out as a critical tool that links international movements for social and political change. "We don’t see the work as separate to social and political movements that are confronting established political and economic systems. We see it as part of those movements, the visual arm of protest. We want it to be used by people as a part of their own activism, not just as pictures on the wall to contemplate. To facilitate this, as well as selling our limited edition prints on the site enabling us to fund the making of the work, there is a free download page of images with a voluntary contribution to the International Solidarity Movement."

About Things are happening around us. Although it is impossible to keep track of everything that is happening in the world, we are informed through up-to-date media channels. We read newspapers, watch videos, and check our social media accounts everyday. And then? After a while we forget what we've seen. In many parts of the world, crimes against humanity are committed every second. This includes Africa, the Middle East, and many other regions. These crimes are in front of everyone, in newspapers, on TV, on social media... However, these problems cannot

Persepolis: The Story of an Iranian Childhood Animated biographical drama film based upon the Marjane Satrapi autobiographical graphic novel of the same name In her illustrated novels and biographical film called Persepolis, depicts people trying to survive under the Shah's regime, the victory of the Islamic Revolution and the devastating effects of the Iran-Iraq war. The consequences of political oppression, radicalism and war are told through stories where joy and tears are mixed together. Marjane Satrapi narrates her life when she was sent to Austria with his mother and father at the age of 14 to study during the Iran-Iraq war, and her life after returning to Iran. Innocence prevails in this story through the perspective of a child. It reveals the effects of decisions taken by politicians on people's lives. Long-term effects of political acts that are taken in short periods put a burden on societies. In addition, the fact that it was written by someone who had experienced that period, reveals important details that cannot seen through media channels.

Some Last Words When I think of my master project year later, I don't want the global pandemic in 2020 will be the thing I remember from. 2020 was a year in which I found my career path and met very inspiring people. Everything I saw around me, everyone I met and all the moments I was part of were an unforgettable experience for me. To be honest, it was a tough decision to follow a career in different field after 4 years in architecture but I am sure I will not regret my decision after this year. Firstly, I would like to thank my esteemed tutor Phil Jones for guiding me with great devotion during these difficult times and being so patient in everything during my MA studies . He definitely taught me and my classmates everything he knows. I want to also thank you my family, my boyfriend and all my lovely friends from all around the world for their support and being with me on this beautiful and challenging journey. I hope that I will use the knowledge and experience I have gained from my MA degree in Arts University Bournemouth in my professional life. I am going to work on making the world a better place for everyone and tell more stories about people who are in the blinspot.
