DESIGN NOTE Today, the themes, stage techniques and actors of the drama stage are diversified, but the evolution of the theater form is very slow. In many cities, traditional framed stage is still a mainstream form of theaters. This design extracts elements from the idea of Toyo Ito and Koolhaas and takes "the flow of space" as a design concept, attempting to apply the modernist classical grid domino system to recreate the building. The site Umeda, is near the city of Osaka, Japan. Osaka is a fashion and information metropolis at the forefront of art and the northern portals in Osaka has continuously spread. The Umeda is located on the north of Osaka but lacks of any typical entertainment buildings. The proposal of Immersive Theatre will be able to provide the local with cultural entertainment and encourage people to re-examine their lives. This is also an opportunity for me to propose a new perspective to respond to the monotonous urban life and and deepen my understanding of the world.

Background Analysis

Site Analysis

Contemporary theatre director Peter Brook once said in The Empty Space that "Any space can be a stage". Today's office, classroom, dining room and other leisure space as rows of "cubicles" have become the mainstream stages in people's life theater. The form of space is single and the division of room is rigid. People always follow the rules which are built according to the requirements and play their fixed roles in their fixed positions and rooms. This design is committed to breaking the shackles of the traditional theater, encouraging audience to move from the seats to the performance space and interact with the performance to have their own experience in the performance, even become a part of the drama.

The site is located in Umeda, Kita-ku, Osaka, where is an economic center of Osaka, gathering with a large of companies, banks and restaurants. The site is close to the Osaka Railway Station and a transportation hub for JR Line, Sakaki Line, Hanshin Line and so on.

The Theoretical Analysis

City Overview The city of Osaka, located along the Coast of Osaka Bay in the central part of Osaka Prefecture, is a flat and warm place with four distinct seasons. It is the earliest region in Japan where commerce and trade developed. Osaka is the most popular center of Kansai region in Japan, with a wide variety of goods, shopping facilities and well-developed urban transportation system. With the analysis of the existing Osaka theaters, from the stage which breaks through the traditional frame, to the edge stretch stage, to the black box theater where the stage and the auditorium are not clearly divided, I found that they heve been constantly innovated, but there is never a good way to display the space to audiences in three-dimensional.

Le Corbusier's "Domino System" pointed out the idea of making indoor and outdoor space flow and merge. Koolhaas applied non-horizontal floor slabs to allow people to move freely in a vertical direction, Toyo Ito improved the "Domino System" through using the beamless floor and tubular column system. The practice of the drum space in the Taichung Opera House makes the tubular columns no longer straight up or down only. The columns stacked in dislocation with other columns to make the whole building space into a three-dimensional continuous space natually. These theories above provide a basis for my design.

The Study Of Plate Variation (2D)

Spatial Function Update

There are two kinds of changes of the floor slabs. One is part subsidence or rise, the other is the whole floor slab deformating into a curved plate. There are nine types in total as follow:

The following figure analyzes the single space and form of the present traditional theater, combining a updated space with the design concept in.

03| SILO RECONSTRUCTION | INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE ART EXHIBITION CENTER | Qingdao, China | EDUCATIONAL INDIVIDUAL WORK | Completed time: Jun.2021 | Design Tutor: Sam Ma

The project is inspired by Droste Effect and the framed landscape of classical Chinese gardens.

DESIGN NOTE In recent years, the concept of industrial heritage renewal and protection or repairation have been full of contradictions. The architecture which is separated far from the social requirements of current era usually is impossible to reproduce. Therefore, maintaining and protecting the value and cultural significance of industrial heritage has gradually become a demand of cultural reproduction in the new era. The site of the old port area is located in the city center of Qingdao, which plays an important role in the freight of the surrounding environment. The global trade business over there gradually shifted to other ports. The planning regulation and policy of the development of freight in the old port has limite the development of the old port area. The issues of equipment technical modification and production layout adjustment are unable to be solved in Qingdao and the port requires development imminently.

Urban History Analysis

Geographical Location

City Overview Qingdao is located in the eastern Eurasia, facing the Yellow Sea to the east. An excellent geographical location and good construction background of the city have promoted the development of the ports. With the German occupation of Qingdao since 1897, modern industry was introduced to Qingdao and the urban modernization of Qingdao has developed. At the same time, the ports of Qingdao developed rapidly.

From 1949 to 1978, the port gradually achieved mechanization. A large number of marine chemical, textile and machinery industries began to sprout from the port to the city. The port and urban space have expanded simultaneously. From 1978 to 1992, a new tunnel and conveying line for coal loading were built near the No.1 wharf. Meanwhile, the port construction realized mechanization, which made the old port and the city be more independent from each other. Gradually, the old port failed to meet the needs from the more modern city during the modernization.

Urban Function Distribution ① Road network & River system analysis

Qingdao is an important economic center and port city along the east coast of China. It is an important international trade port and sea transportation hub city. A numbers of rivers in Qingdao flow into the sea independently.

② Urban industrial heritage & Exhibition space distribution Qingdao's industrial heritages and exhibition spaces are distributed but concentrated around the site. There is no building able to combine the two building groups to show people a connection between the thriving city cultural heritage and the development of the port. Therefore, it is potential to transform the silo into an industrial heritage art exhibition center to display the rich cultural heritage of the city and the old port under a requirement of port renovation.

In 1892, the Qing government fortified in Jiao-Ao, which established the city of Qingdao. The port was mainly used for transportation and transference through human shoulder to deliver. From 1897 to 1949, Germany leased Jiaozhou Bay as a military port and the foreign shipping companies entered in Qingdao which gradually enriched the urban functions.

Industrial Heritage Of Qingdao

Since 1992, the Terminal 6 of Qingdao Cruise Home Port Passenger Center was put in use. The business on the old port area was transferred to other place. The port and the city were more separated.

03| SKYSCRAPER DESIGN | SUPERLIVING & LIVELY VERTICAL NEIGHBOURHOOD | Wan Chai, Hong Kong | EDUCATIONAL INDIVIDUAL WORK

| Completed time: Dec.2021 | Design Tutor: Sam Ma

The project is inspired by Black Mirror Season 1 episode 2 "15 million Miles".

DESIGN NOTE A healthy city not only provides a high-quality life, but also conveys a future social demand for life efficiency and density under a rapid urbanization and urban development. The main function of the building is conceived as a lively vertical community and a transportation hub. The building will become a new urban gathering place, a commercial activity center, a tourist attraction and a residential area. It is a sustainable urban new area integrating with office, residence and leisure. When designing this building, the mixed functional areas have also been carefully considered - just as those can be found in a good city. They can gather users from a wider field together. As a one-stop service place, it not only provides a healthy and social environment for people to live, work and stay in, but also ensures an allweather operation of its own functions. The design creats a safe and vibrant community for both people and buildings.

Background Analysis The black mirror depicts a world full of virtual and electronic screens. Everyone lives in a cramped space. Garbage variety shows and pornographic advertisements are broadcasted for 24 hours a day to corrode their thoughts and drain the space for their independent thinking. Their daily work is to exchange bicycle mileage for living and consumption. This is a projection of the real society.

① Under the working system of 996, people work more than half a day. Working too long will lead to poor health for employees. ② Socializing, commuting and excess information occupy a lot of time after work, and people gradually lose the time and ability to think, learn and summarize. ③ Long-term inability to take care of family issues and lack ing of company of children, family members, and elders, will accumulate family conflicts.

With the "996. ICU" project uploaded in GitHub, programmers resist the "996" working system of Internet companies, which means working from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. for six days per week. This kind of work system has been growing savagely in a way of hidden rules. It impossible to change the current situation in a short time. Under the pressure from long commuting, life and enterprises, people's body and life have fallen into a vicious circle.

City Overview The site is located in the north of Hong Kong Island. Within the base, there is Gloucester Road, Eastern Corridor and Canal Road Flyover. It is a reclaimed land expanded from the original narrow flat land. With a sustained and rapid development of global cities, the living space is constantly compressed. As a highly prosperous free port and international metropolis, Hong Kong's land is becoming increasingly tight, which also results a high work pressure and poor living environment. It is urgent to solve the problems of inconvenient transportation network and insufficient of cheap housing. I hope to reflect on the multiple meanings of efficiency, quality of life and basic living conditions in the developed city.

04| KINDERGARTEN DESIGN | NURSERY AND EARLY EDUCATION CENTER | Wangjing, Chaoyang District, Beijing | ACADEMIC-INDIVIDUAL | Complete time: Feb.2022 | Instructor: Ma Yueguang

This project is inspired by the moment that parents who do not have enough time to accompany with their children, have missed children's growth because of busy work. There are more and more "urban left behind children" in the cities. The picture is from illustrator Pascal Campion, recording his daily life with his son.

Pascal Campion @pascalcampion “I love to tell stories.” French-American Illustrator and Storyteller.

DESIGN NOTE In recent years, due to the popularity of the working system in the Internet enterprises of "996" or "007", which means people need to work for a very long time, parents in these companies get less time to accompany with their children. According to the data from China's urban parent-child survey, nearly 70% of parents have no time to accompany their children, those children, like rural left behind children, have become "invisible left behind children" in cities. The Wangjing is the second CBD in Beijing, with many communication industries and Internet giants. There are many office buildings located in the region. The permanent population tends to be younger, the overall level of education turns higher, and overtime working is more common. This project aims to break the current situation that kindergartens are only used as community supporting facilities to locate the early education trusteeship center in the Wangjing area specifically at the most busy area. The design attempts to maximize the use of commuting time to increase an effective company of parents to their children.

Background Analysis

Questionnaire Survey

The attachment bond with parents is the cornerstones of children's view to the world, which greatly influences children's relationship with others. Following figure extracts the one-day activities of urban left behind children. OK, I'll send you the drawings right away.

City Overview Wangjing is located in the northeast of Beijing, with developed traffic network and complete supporting facilities.

Population Distribution In Each Ring Road

It's too late to make breakfast this morning. Take a bread to school, son. I gotta go, I'm going to be late for work.

Yesterday, dad forgot to do handicrafts with me again.

I think I'll be home late again today.

Age Composition Of Population

All wrong! Go back and draw it again!

Existing Problems Most left behind children will have psychological and emotional problems. After a long time without the company of their parents, children are easy to become emotionally fragile, lack self-confidence and even abandon themselves. Mom always replies to work messages when we eat.

Teacher praised my painting.

Please don't quarrel...

Urban left behind children are more hidden. Children live with their parents. Although their material life can be guaranteed, they seriously lack the love and encouragement from their parents.
