The city of Badajoz has its origins in the Islamic Batalyaws, founded in 875. The Citadel was the sector where its rulers lived and had a walled enclosure which separated it from the rest of the city. That wall has survived until today and this route goes along the parapet.

Badajoz has been and is a changing city. Its status as a provincial administrative capital and as a military headquarters on the border led to the constant renovation of its buildings, a process accelerated by the ravages of the successive battles it provided the setting for. It does not display a single trait which unifies and differentiates its urban landscape, quite the contrary; the most characteristic feature is its diversity, the heterogeneous mixture of small archaeological pieces of different styles and periods. Thus, as you go along this route you can find the popular features of its oldest

Over time the role of the defensive enclosure of the Citadel has changed, depending on the role played by the city itself throughout history. The interior, therefore, still houses archaeological remains and buildings from different periods: late-mediaeval fortified houses, such as the

San Juan’s Gate and Cathedral Tower From the moment at which the Islamic Batalyaws was conquered by the Kingdom of León in 1230 Christian places of worship were built. The former mosques were turned into churches, as was the case of that of Santa Maria del Castillo, which used the palatial mosque of the Citadel.

The bastioned wall of Badajoz was built from the 17th century onwards in order to defend the city against a possible attack from neighbouring Portugal, something which happened several times in the different conflicts throughout history. The first outer defences were built during the Portuguese Restoration War (1640-1668): the hornworks the head of the Palmas Bridge and San Cristobal’s Fort. When the war ended the new fortified enclosure was built between 1680 and 1700, replacing the old mediaeval wall of Islamic origin which surrounded the city, except for the Citadel, which has been preserved.

Plaza de la Soledad After the churches came the monasteries and religious houses. Some of these buildings could not handle the ravages of the bombings and sieges or disappeared following the seizures during the Confiscations of the 19th century. But many still survive and are still the setting for the popular devotion of their patrons, as is the case of the Lady of La Soledad, housing outstanding works of religious art.

ROUTE OF THE PARKS AND GARDENS OF BADAJOZ In the 19th century the first works were performed to landscape some public areas of the city. The old fields of San Francisco and San Juan, the Minayo Square and the newly-created Plaza de San Andrés were made into “walking salons” with parterres, trees giving shade and benches. In the middle of the last century other areas were set aside for the creation of new parks: the moats of the old bastioned

Hornabeque Throughout the 18th century improvements and extensions were made to the fortifications, which did not prevent the city from succumbing to the attacks of the French and British armies in 1881 and 1812 during the Spanish War of Independence. Some parts of the wall were demolished in the middle of the last century, many of its moats were landscaped and different buildings and equipment were built on the bastions, which meant that the bastioned fortifications passed almost unnoticed. The recent recovery of some of its most important elements has given it back the prominence it deserves and today it constitutes one of the most significant patrimonial resources in the city.

Fine Arts Museum Badajoz has a wide range of museums. The oldest are the Provincial Archaeological and Fine Arts Museums, already over a hundred years old, heirs of the role the capital plays in the conservation and promotion of the archaeology and art of the province. They have been joined by others of a strictly local nature, such as the City Museum and the Carnival Museum, and others with monographic

themes, such as the Cathedral Museum, with valuable works of art among its collections. The most innovative and with an international character is the Extremadura and Latin American Museum of Contemporary Art. They all offer a renewed vision of the assets which make up the current identity of the city.

The old parks from that period (the Infantil and Legion Parks) are now being adapted in order to reconcile their enjoyment them with the conservation of the fortified enclosure. The new century has turned its attention to other areas of the city for the creation of its new parks, on the banks of the Guadiana and the Rivillas stream. Trinidad Gardens
