UNDERSTANDING THE CITY STUDIO: Discerning the Urban Realm through its People The first semester foundation studio of the Master’s in Planning programme aims at studying the city of Ahmedabad within parameters set by the course schedule. It introduces to the student an array of tools that enables them to comprehend the structure and components of urban planning: including therefore under its umbrella urban planning, transport, infrastructure and services, and housing. Each exercise (of a series of thirteen) examined, analyzed and ultimately critiqued on the individual areas of study (that comprised of a specific kilometer square of area in eastern or western part of Ahmedabad). The outcome ergo works towards exposing the student to the broad spectrum of planning before he/she settles into understanding their specific major, allowing them to comprehend through the exercise what the subjects comprise of and how to look at a city from various perspectives.
