Air Traffic Up Nine Percent in the UAE Total air movements have increased by nearly nine percent in the UAE airspace during the first three months of the year, according to the latest report of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

uring the first quarter a total of 167,221 air movements were recorded in the emirates, compared to 153,387 during the same period in 2010. March brought significant growth in all air related activities and operations, including air safety, security and infrastructure, as well as air transport, licensing and aeromedical. air traffic movements totalled to 58,553, representing an increase of almost 14 percent over February 2010, while average daily traffic rose 8.9 percent, accounting to 1899. with 26,276 movements, dubai ranked first among the emirates representing nearly 44.9 percent of the uae’s total figures, followed by the

The striking figures underpin the emirates initiatives, commented h.e. saif Mohammed al suwaidi, director general, gcaa. “air operations in the uae saw significant growth in the first quarter of 2011. in spite of the current conflicts in the region, the uae achieved a growth of nine percent in the first three months of the year. Traffic has continued to increase at abu dhabi international airport (adac) with over 2.8 million passengers passing through its terminals in the first quarter of the year. according to the adac, the airport handled 28,724 flights with 2,820,045 passengers on board; achieving a 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, while cargo traffic showed a significant increase of 9 percent between January and March. March proved to be a particularly successful month; the airport recorded doubledigit increase with passenger numbers totaling in 983,000, 13 percent up compared to the same period of 2010. another striking detail of the report is the airports six percent growth in aircraft movements, while transported cargo rose by 16 percent. ahmed al haddabi, senior vice president, airport organisations, adac, elaborated on the successful months. “The first quarter of this year has been yet another display of the positive progress adac has been making. The continuous flow of passengers through the emirate remains strong and we expect momentum to remain as we draw closer to the busier summer season. preparations for this season have commenced with the recent addition of direct flights to hong Kong , via cathay pacific starting in June, to the list of destinations served by the airport and the completion of the terminal 1 refurbishments later this quarter.” accounting for 21 percent of the total traffic, london, bangkok, doha, Manila and Jeddah rank among the top five destinations and, furthermore, services to Jeddah experienced a compelling increase of 48 percent over the same quarter of 2010. in terms of top regions, the majority of flights depart to the Far east, Middle east and europe, which generate the most traffic from adac. new routes, destinations and increased frequencies which have played a vital role in the substantial traffic growth include v australia’s debut to sydney, etihad’s new service to bangalore and air india express’ additional flights to amritsar and Mangalore. april 23, 2011

Software creator iRiS has announced the launch of an innovative in-room guest services application in the uae, following extensive on-property trials. The iris personal valet is a real time communications hub which interfaces all major back of house and guest room systems. it uses the ipad, offering the user convenience and familiarity with the product and its operation. a wide range of functions are possible from alarm calls to room service, lighting and air-conditioning control, all at the touch of a screen. The core of the system delivers content to each in-room iris ipad and allows the guest to access all the hotel’s facilities, offerings and information as well as live news, and detailed information including maps and local attractions, giving the guest a greatly enhanced service experience. chris atkin, founding partner, iris software systems, spoke of his excitement at launching the product in the uae before it goes global. “The software is not limited to the hotel industry, but has enormous potential across a wide range of industries. we have chosen to launch the hospitality application first as this is a dynamic industry willing to embrace technological advancements to create and improve guest experience – particularly here in the Middle east.”

Gulf Air Expands

ulf air is set to add two new destinations, copenhagen and nairobi to its network as well as increase the flight frequency to Milan. The national carrier of bahrain will commence services to the danish capital from July 1, and will fly to its first scandinavian destination four times a week. The capital city of Kenya, the third african city of the airline’s route map, will welcome gulf air’s inaugural flight on July 5, followed by four scheduled services a week. The new routes underpin the carrier’s long term strategy, reinforced samer Majali, ceo, gulf air. “The addition of copenhagen and nairobi along with Kabul, which we announced a few weeks ago,

Emirates Ramps up South American Expansion

mirates is poised to expand its operation in south america with the commencement of its daily non-stop flight to rio de Janeiro and extension to buenos aires from January 3, 2012. h.h. ahmed bin saeed al-Maktoum, chairman and ceo, emirates airline and group, comments on the airline’s increased capacity in the continent. “both buenos aires and rio de Janeiro are rightly renowned as world-class leisure destinations as well as important business and trading centres. our research has shown that there is a high demand for these cities from across our network. brazil has been part of the emirates network since 2007 when we began flights from dubai to sao paulo. with the country playing host to both the 2014 FiFa world cup and 2016 olympics, brazil will be further catapulted into the world’s spotlight, and we will be in a prime position to transport sports enthusiasts to these renowned events. Oman Air Training Centre Awarded by IATA The International Air Transport association (iata) has honoured oman air training centre on its Middle east 2011 top ten authorised training centre listing. First W Hotel in India

St. Regis Bangkok’s Debut

tarwood hotels & resorts worldwide has revealed plans to open the first w hotels worldwide in india. under a management contract with Jaguar buildcon private limited, w Mumbai will be built on three acres of land in south central Mumbai, and is expected to open in 2015. The property will overlook the Mahalaxmi racecourse, and will form part of the namaste tower, a 55-storey mixed-use building, designed by ws atkins to look like clasped hands. The hotel will consist of more than 350 guestrooms, including two wow suites and one extreme wow suite. The st. regis bangkok, developed by rajadamri lodging limited, claims to set a new standard of service for the region. The hotel features 227 guestrooms and will be the first in bangkok to offer butler service to all its guests. it also offers the first elemis spa and ZuMa restaurant in the country. The 47 storey building, designed by world-renowned brennan beer gorman architects, is situated on rajadamri road in the heart of the city. starwood anticipates that it will become a defining silhouette on bangkok’s skyline. andreas oberoi, general manager, st. regis bangkok, remarked on the significance of the new opening. Through the global data products, suppliers can see who is selling their product and the industry supply chain can use this information for a number of activities, from fraud prevention to emarketing campaigns to facilitating critical functions like revenue accounting. iata maintenance of this information is subject to stringent qualification and retention criteria, which ensures worldwide recognition throughout the industry. The global iata agency program formally recognises travel agencies who are authorised to sell and issue international/domestic

tickets on behalf of airlines, through a unique iata numeric code. The essence of iata’s agency programs can be brought to travel agent through the iata/iatan id card, which is the recognised industry credential for identifying iata/tids travel professionals worldwide. iata indicates that travel and tourism suppliers recognise the id card, relying on it to effectively manage and distribute their exclusive industry concessions to a preferred audience. The program’s objective is to bring together sales and suppliers by providing an online platform called agentexperience.com on. The program is exclusive to iata accredited agencies as well as those holding an iata tids-code for the non-air program.

Q & A with Bernhard Haechler Since the hotel opening in 2003, the award-winning Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai, has set new standards in luxurious accommodation and service. Bernhard Haechler, vice president and general manager, talks about the hotel’s latest slogan and social and environmental responsibility. Travel Trade Weekly: The new campaign slogan of Shangri-La Hotel: “There’s no greater act of hospitality than to embrace a stranger as one’s own,” is iconic. Has ShangriLa Hotel, Dubai experienced any change in clientele (i.e. of different nationalities, religions etc.) since the campaign was launched? Bernhard Haechler: in dubai, our guest nationality mix has remained rather consistent over the past two years. There has been no significant shift since the launch of the campaign, however, we have seen an increase in our brand awareness in the region and i believe the new campaign has been a contributing factor.

What do you feel is the most important contribution the hotel has provided to the hospitality industry in Dubai?
