T

he region’s occupancy decreased by 9.7 percent to 59 percent, while the average daily rate rose to uSd176.82, representing an increase of 10.8 percent compared with April 2010. The middle East’s overall performance increased in occupancy and average room rate, driven by improvements in the largest two hotel markets of the region— Saudi Arabia and the united Arab Emirates.” despite the downturn, parts of the region sustained high occupancy

rates with Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (up by 17 percent to 73.8 percent) and Abu dhabi, uAE (up by 15.7 percent to 69.3 percent) witnessing double-digit increases compared with the corresponding period of 2010. cairo, Egypt witnessed the largest decrease with occupancy dropping by 52.1 percent to 33 percent, followed by Johannesburg, South Africa (down by 22.1 percent to 46.3 percent), and muscat, oman (down by 20.3 percent to 53.1 percent).

Agent’s Insight

Hakan Bakar

Name: Hakan Bakar Position: CEO Company: Holiday Factory Location: UAE Who are you? I am the cEo of Holiday Factory and I have been in the travel and tourism industry all my life. I graduated in archaeology in Germany and started my career as a tour guide when I was 18 years old, thereby bringing my passion of travelling to life. Before Holiday Factory, I led a renowned tour operator in Germany. Holiday Factory is the first real tour operator in the uAE offering professionally organised package tours. Trips to Europe include destinations such as Turkey, Italy, France, Spain, uK, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, czech Republic and Hungary. Asian destinations feature India, Sri lanka, Thailand, malaysia and Indonesia whilst lebanon, Egypt and Jordan are included in the middle East region. Honeymooners haven’t been left out with the maldives, mauritius and the Seychelles on offer in the Indian ocean section.

Tourism Experts Discuss Industry’s Future Travel technology firm Amadeus has hosted a panel discussion examining the future of the travel industry and the role of technology in its development. The panel looked at the changing role of the travel agents, in addition to how the market in the middle East is still very different from other parts of the world. Taking part in the discussions were omar Ahmad, cEo, Joob.com; Asim Arshad, cEo, orient Travel; Roland Bunge, commercial general manager, Kanoo Travel; Albert Pozo, vice president, multinational business and corporate travel, Amadeus and Joerg Schuler, director of marketing and operations, WEmEA, Amadeus. The group concluded that the rise of online technology in particular has had an impact on traditional forms of selling travel, however, firms are adapting to the changes with travel agents embracing new ways of connecting with customers. Pozo commented that the travel industry has been transforming for the past decade, with technology playing an ever increasing part. Aftrer analysing the past 10 years and looking at forecasts done for the coming decade, the panellists see the travel service landscape being very different in the future. conclusions were drawn that travel agents will be around for years to come, but demand for online travel booking is rising and customers who are still using agents regularly are often researching extensively before booking.

What is your favourite thing about working in the travel industry? I love to organise good holiday packages. A satisfied, happy customer is all I want. I always try to make sure that they have a wonderful and pleasant journey.

When is the best time to visit the UAE? I think the best time is when it isn’t too hot. That would be anytime between November and march.

Where would you like to travel for your next holiday? South Africa. Since we are planning to add this destination, I will be visiting it soon to see the best deals we could crack for our customers.

Why should people come to you for travel advice? We are working with travel agencies, so I would like to reiterate that they are not our competitors. People could visit their nearest travel agencies for travel advice but I can surely tell you the reason they should ask for our product. We are one of the most affordable package tour operators. All our prices on our brochure are fixed and the price clients see is the price they pay. Whether it is a family holiday, a cultural experience or a city break, Holiday Factory has options to match everyone’s expectations. Travel in any season, any day and the prices will still be affordable. JuNE 4, 2011

Range Hospitality is proud to arrange this seminar by bringing together leading multinational companies operating in Iraq during the event, Al Baghdadi noted that religious tourism in Iraq is on a growth trajectory but further developments are needed to cope with demand. “There are absolutely no hotels in Karbala

and Najaf which would be graded threestar or above by international standards. coupled with the growing number of pilgrims, a number of large scale developments are required to ensure this ‘gap’ is addressed. We require at least 500 hotels, based on the current influx of pilgrims, to be built in Karbala,” commented Al Baghdadi In 2010, foreign firms and investors reported uSd42.67 billion in investments, service contracts and other commercial activities across Iraq — an estimated 48.7 percent increase in total deal value from 2010.

Q & A with Sami Nasser Not all travel trade in the MENA region has experienced a trough due to widespread instability, and displacement of tourism has even helped some regions. Sami Nasser, vice president, Middle East, Africa and Indian Ocean, Sofitel, expresses the brand’s success and future plans as well as what needs to be done to continually reinforce the root of Sofitel’s value. Travel Trade Weekly: Could you tell the Middle East? us about some of the developments Sami Nasser: We don’t have too many and openings in the Middle East and hotels in the region. I’d like to have hotels North Africa region in the next two that give good profit, where the owner is years and the reasons behind some of happy, and this is why we have to refuse some hotels. When looking at a new the more significant openings? Sami Nasser: I will start by talking about property, the first thing we analyse is the Sofitel dubai Jumeirah Beach. For me, this property only finished fully opening this year and it is starting to have good results. Some of the good results are based on the situation in Egypt, and maybe in Bahrain, as we saw a big increase in the dubai market. We also have the chinese coming. Sofitel dubai Jumeirah Beach is very nice because it could be a (leisure) resort and it could be corporate so we have half of the clients under corporate and half of them that like ‘The Walk’ - a place where you can walk with the family. This is the first Sofitel in dubai. The second one will be on the Palm, and then there will be a property on Sheikh Zayed road. This hotel will be completely corporate and mIcE focused. We will not have more than three hotels in dubai because I believe it’s enough. There is also the Abu dhabi property, due to open with 280 rooms, at the corniche. Abu dhabi needs new hotels, and they are needed in the corniche area. Then there is Sofitel Bahrain, which we just opened a few months ago. The property is one of the most beautiful as very few hotels in Bahrain are by the beach. The main target market for this hotel is really international clients, especially when you have big events like the Formula one. In other countries like Syria, we can develop more. Also we would like to enter Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.

Travel Trade Weekly: Do you plan to expand on a large scale throughout JuNE 4, 2011

location and exclusivity.

Travel Trade Weekly: Any significance of focusing on human developments in the North Africa region: resources. Sami Nasser: I met with a travel agent Algeria, Libya, Tunisia and so forth? Sami Nasser: In libya we don’t have recently who informed me that she spent properties. In Algeria we have one Sofitel and I’m sure it is enough for now. The hotel is doing very well and is one of the most profitable hotels in the world.

Travel Trade Weekly: Will you be looking to go into Turkey? Sami Nasser: I would love to. If I could get a hotel, yes I would take it and keep it.

Travel Trade Weekly: Tell us about the importance of customer service in Sofitel properties, and also about the

two days in our hotel and that the service was good. This is the minimum that I would expect from a customer. Sofitel does a very good job in terms of people, but what I would like to work on further is for staff to make decisions and take initiative. Guests should not have to wait for a waitress to say: “let me go ask if this is possible.” The waitress should do what she has to do to offer guests what they want. you can teach them, but you have to also choose them. Some people never take initiative and they are afraid.
