“The cool, grey city of love.” — George Sterling

Project 01/ Project Description

Design a new visual system for an existing design conference. Create a poster, nametags, a schedule, and signage.

Project Concept

“Above the Fog” was a Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD) conference, in 2013, held in San Francisco. SEGD is a multidisciplinary community creating experiences that connect people to place. The concept for the new visual system is about connecting people to the SEGD conference, and the impression of the beautiful fog in San Francisco. The graphics with delicate lines represent cities where each chapter of SEGD is located. Also, the blue color palette and gradient square graphics describe San Francisco as a “cool and grey city of love” (George Sterling).

“I saw lines and patterns everywhere. I spent whole days looking to the sky.” — Alexandre Jacques

Project 02/ Project Description

Design a nine-page spread magazine based on a specific subject. Compile and organize a minimum of five articles that describe the subject matter. Create a cohesive visual system through imagery and typography.

Project Concept

“Facade” is an editorial project about beautiful shapes and patterns of architectural façades. Geometric movements give the illusion of dynamism, but instead, it is organized stably with mathematics. The concept of the magazine is to illustrate the aesthetics of building façades that are more delicate and have a sense of stability than commonly depicted, with photography of different façades.

“A different language is a different vision of life.” — Federico Fellini

Project 03/ Project Description

Design an app by going through the UI/UX design process, which includes conducting user research, user journey, user testing, generating the app concept, designing information architecture, creating various prototypes, and finally, designing a cohesive user interface which functions within a cohesive and effective user flow.

Project Concept

I chose to create a daily English educational app for international students or English learners. The app helps people to learn the English language by providing two words and a chat function everyday to practice making sentences with the given words. By editing interests, topics, and goals, the users can get related vocabulary that is interesting to them, which helps to increase their passion for learning English and gives a sense of connection.

“Your calm mind is the ultimate weapon against your challenges. So relax.” — Bryant Mcgill

Project 04/ Project Description

Select a brand that is dying, defunct, or dead and identify its core. Revive the brand by repositioning and expanding the brand mission, audience, and strategy, and then create a new brand identity and extend into multiple visual expressions of the brand.

Project Concept

I chose to rebrand Infusion Organique, a fragrance brand established in 2008. The original Infusion Organique tried to convey an elegant mood for women with its flower illustrations, but it did not stand out among other fragrance brands because of its weak design and uncompetitive prices. Breaking away from the original mission, I extended the idea to what concepts audiences associate with the brand, which are refreshment and relaxation, and then created a new identity. The two circles indicate that their different types of ingredients, which are derived organically and scientifically. The leaf graphic that is created by the intersection of the circles represents nature. The overall shape is simple and centered, which suggests the ideas of relaxation, comfort, and a focused mind.

“Lavender is an aromatic tribute to Provence. It is the fragrant soul of the region.” — Oliver Baussan

Project 05/ Project Description

Redesign an annual report that contains graphs and charts based on the new visual system and apply the system to the whole book design. Moreover, create understandable graphs and charts for the book.

Project Concept

I chose to design an annual report of Loccitane, which is an aromatherapist cosmetic brand. Loccitane offers sensory delight by spreading the aroma one would experience in the gardens of Provence. The new visual concept is about spreading the fragrance of Loccitane products. To illustrate the idea, I combined spreading watercolor drawings with the product images. Also, the pastel tone of the color palettes I used describes the sense of delight and the fragrance of the cosmetic.
