After a breakthrough season for Manhattan College women’s basketball—earning the program’s first postseason win in nine years—the Jaspers have returned to action in fine form, winning their first two games of the season. Five of last year’s seven seniors have graduated and headed out, but two, Sini Makela and Courtney Warley, have taken advantage of the additional year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to anyone who played under last season’s difficult conditions.
There are eight new players on the team, five freshmen and three transfers. Given the newness of the team, coach Heather Vulin is impressed by how well they’re playing together.

Last year, Manhattan had only one nonconference game before the MAAC season started, so getting to travel and play teams like Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson is a huge return to normalcy. “I pride myself on preparation for each of our opponents,” said Vulin. “To have so many new players in such key roles and key moments, is a little nervewracking for me, but they’re very talented.”
The players are upping their game on social media thanks to the ability to earn money from name, image and likeness. While no one on the team has any contracts, they are showing their social media savvy. “Especially for our program, social media is our best advertising that we have,” said Vulin.
One of the key returning players is junior guard and Bronx native Dee Dee Davis. “She’s been an absolute joy to coach,” said Vulin. “She was a big get for us when we got her as a freshman. We all knew that she is capable of what she’s doing now in terms of being an All Conference-type player. She’s off to a great start. She’s shooting the ball well.
“We expect our returning players, whether they’re starters or someone who comes off the bench, to really hold themselves to our Play Green standard, which means everything we do we do at a championship level.”
Despite loss, Hampton feels the love at Columbia

After nearly two years away from competitive basketball, the Columbia University women’s basketball team came out hot against Hampton University, a prominent HBCU, prevailing 78–56 in last week’s season opener. The loss did not dim the enthusiasm of Hampton supporters, which included alumni as well as family members of some of the players. “Win or lose, it’s great seeing so many alumni come out and support the team,” said Hampton alum Yakik Rumley.
Chelsea Hardy, Hampton class of 2014, is an active alum grateful for the basketball team giving her a great reason to connect with other alumni as well as fellow members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. “We want to cheer them on, especially the women’s team because they don’t always get as much love as the men’s basketball team,” said Hardy. “We want them to feel the love in the crowd.” Latoya Pressley was at her first college basketball game since graduating from Hampton in 2015. “It feels good to be able to support the team on the road here in my home city,” she said. “To be here at Columbia and see so much support for the team, that’s great.”
The family of Hampton guard Heaven Accimeus, who is from Brooklyn, was out in force with signs cheering on the team, #GoLadyPirates, and encouraging the coach to #PutHeavenIn. “It’s amazing to see her play at home,” said Heaven’s mother, Nicole Accimeus. “We’re very blessed and honored to see her here today.”

to see them play because I don’t get to go to Virginia that often,” said Finley. “It’s very nice to have all the alumni come out and support our team.” Hampton’s coach, David Six, is from Brooklyn. Bringing his team to play in New York in 2019 fulfilled a dream. The Giants have had nearly two weeks to get healthier, focus on correcting repetitive mistakes and hone in on small details. They last played Nov. 7 at home at MetLife Stadium, defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 23-16 to raise their record to 3-6. Overall, the Giants are seeded 13th in the 16-team National Football Conference. Seven teams from each NFL conference, the NFC and AFC, 14 in total, will make the playoffs.
The Giants will next face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the road on Monday night. It will be a difficult and untimely matchup for the Giants, as the 6-3 Buccaneers have had back-to-back losses, falling to the Saints in New Orleans 36-27 in Week 8, then losing 29-19 to the 3-6 Washington Football Team last Sunday at FedExField five miles outside of the nation’s capital.
Afterwards, the Buccaneers’ head coach, Bruce Arians, had a harsh assessment of the defending Super Bowl champions. “It has nothing to do with ability,” stewed Arians. “It’s about execution and being a smart football team. We’re a very dumb football team. And that’s a reflection of the coaches.”
So the Giants can expect a Buccaneers squad that should be intensely purposeful, physical and locked in. Motivated by Arians’ unfiltered criticism. “I would expect to see their best football of the year this [week],” said Giants head coach Joe Judge on Monday in addressing the media from the team’s practice facility in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
“I really would. I’ll expect to see Tom [Brady] play his best football, I’ll expect them to play their best defense as a team, best offense, best coaching job they’ve had. It’s a very, very talented roster. They won the championship last year for a reason. Very, very rare to return all of your players the way they did.
“That’s something you just don’t see a lot in any kind of professional sports, let alone in the National Football League. It’s a great opportunity for [us] to go against a team like this and compete. I would expect to see their absolute best this week.”
The Giants are hoping running back Saquon Barkley and left tackle Andrew Thomas are back after missing time due to injuries. Barkley has been sidelined for four straight games after sustaining a sprained left ankle Oct. 10 in a 44-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Thomas, who was out Week 5 with a left foot injury, returned the following week but played less than two quarters in a 38-11 defeat to the Los Angeles Rams resulting from a right ankle issue. He hasn’t suited up since after being placed on injured reserve.

It’s not Christmas yet, but Jets are in the spirit of giving

The Jets are in the charitable spirit of giving. They give up points to opponents generously and abundantly; 54 to the New England Patriots in Week 7, 45 to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 9, and 45 to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
The loss to the Bills put the Jets at 2-7. They started the game with optimism, but it was quickly doused. The Bills scored 10 first quarter points and took a 17-3 halftime lead. At 10:47 of the third quarter, Buffalo running back Matt Brieda scored on a 15-yard touchdown run to add on to the rout, making it 31-3. The final score of 45-17 was a formality.
The Jets helped the Bills by committing a season-high five turnovers. Quarterback Mike White, who had given the Jets some hope in strong showings filling in for starter Zach Wilson, threw four interceptions. Wilson is working his way back from a sprained PCL in his right knee suffered against the Patriots on Oct. 24. The defense allowed their division rival Bills, who are 6-3 and lead the AFC East, 139 rushing yards and 366 passing. Bills QB Josh Allen was 21-28 with two touchdowns and one interception.
“Ever since that bye week [Week 6], we haven’t been nearly as good as we have wanted to be,” said Jets head coach Robert Saleh. “We have eight games left and from coaches to players, we have to find a way to get better every day. Otherwise, you’re selling yourself short.”
Both embarrassed and angry with their play, Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins was clear in expressing the Jets’ failures.
“Our job is to go out there and stop people, and we haven’t done it over the last few outings, so for us, yeah we’re embarrassed, because it’s not our standard,” explained Rankins.
“I think to a man, we understand the kind of players, the kind of men we have in that locker room that line up on defense for us. Every man should be embarrassed. Every man should be angry, but at the end of the day, those are our brothers we have to go to war with.”
In actuality, the Jets’ war is within. It’s their battle to get healthy, become competitive and to post some wins. Their next opportunity is Sunday against the Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium.

Wheelchair distance races are a test of strength, endurance and determination. The 26.2 mile TCS New York City Marathon course, encompassing the challenging terrain of all five boroughs, is one of the most grueling in the world. Two Sundays ago, at the NYC Marathon’s 50th anniversary running, Madison de Rozario and Marcel Hug conquered all obstacles to emerge as the champions in the women’s and men’s races respectively.
The 27-year-old Rozario, a six-time Paralympic medalist, including garnering two golds this past summer at the Tokyo Games, won her first NYC Marathon in her third appearance and the first for her native Australia, clocking 1:51:01. She defeated second place finisher Tatyana McFadden (1:53:590) and Manuela Schär (1:54:02), who was awarded the bronze. Both McFadden—five times—and Schar (2019) are past winners in New York, and de Rozario edged Schar by only one second in a thrilling ending in the Paralympic marathon in Tokyo.
Her victory gave de Rozario the distinction of being only the second athlete to win the Paralympic marathon gold and the New York City Marathon in the same year. Edith Wolf accomplished the feat in 2008.
“It definitely feels like the next chapter in my career. I think I’ve been trying to become stronger with that
marathon distance for quite a long time now,” de Rozario said soon after breaking the traditional tape in Central Park to claim the title. “I’ve never won a marathon like that before, and I didn’t realize how stressful it is to be out in front like that because you don’t know how close the next athlete is.” Hug, from Switzerland, captured his fourth New York Marathon championship in a time of 1:31:24, his first win at the event since 2017. The 35-yearold bested Great Britain’s David Weir, the 2010 winner, whose time of 1:38:01 placed him second, and two-time champion Daniel Romanchuk, a native of Mount Airy, Maryland, who was third in 1:38:22. “I’m really, really happy and very satisfied with my perforMadison de Rozario and Marcel Hug captured the women’s and men’s wheelchair titles at this mance today,” Hug said. “It’s year’s TCS NYC Marathon incredible to have had this big of a gap. I never expected it. It’s a very tough course with many uphills. So I was expecting to have a group together, maybe two, three at least together. I had a chance to break away very early, so I took the chance and tried to keep up my pace.”

Like so many other facilities across the country, the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory in the Upper Manhattan community of Washington Heights was impacted by the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
Most of the 2020-21 season was cancelled and The Armory became one of the first mass vaccination sites in the New York City area. While the life-saving results of the multitude of people who received the COVID-19 vaccine at the expansive structure have yet to be quantified in a published study, there is no doubt the efficacy has been substantial.
Today, the building is getting back to hosting track & field events, as it has undergone impressive renovations in anticipation of the upcoming season, including the installation of the multi-layer Mondo Super X Performance Track of which the oval and infield is composed.
“With thousands and thousands of visits from our northern Manhattan communities and others from across the city, The Armory is the busiest indoor track in the world,” said Armory Foundation CoPresident Jonathan Schindel. “Replacing the worn out infield with a brand new Mondo track will be enjoyed by all our young athletes, and the new center hung display will make track & field meets even more fun for spectators and athletes.”
The travel of the new track and all its material took roughly a month to arrive at Washington Heights—leaving Alba, Italy, arriving into the port of Montreal and then being shipped by truck into NYC. Once it arrived at The Armory, it took three weeks to install. The sparkling 200-meter track is expected to last five years and the infield eight years. Among the anticipated meets are The Armory Metro Eagles Invitational on November 27, the season’s first youth meet, which includes high school competitors, and the PSAL Gobbler Classic on November 28. The Millrose Games, the world’s most time honored indoor track & field event, will return in February, having moved from Madison Square Garden to the Armory in 2012. The venerable meet, which was first staged in 1904, was held at the Garden from 1914 until 2011.
