Late last year, a student was stabbed at Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom School in the Bronx. Only two school safety agents were on duty at the time. School Safety, along with the cops, increased security at Fannie Lou and brought in portable scanning equipment.
The DOE praised school safety agents as vital to the community.
“School safety is the responsibility of every member of the community, and School Safety Agents are a crucial part of why our schools are safe,” said DOE spokesperson Nathaniel Styer. “From providing a friendly greeting at the school entrance to providing safe space for young people to learn, SSAs have a special role in so many of our school communities.”
During an early January visit to Concourse Village Elementary School, de Blasio praised safety agents—along with others—for their work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I’m so proud to stand here today, shoulder-toshoulder with not only Mayor Adams, but every single educator, school leader, social worker, guidance counselor, food service employee, custodian, and school safety agents who come to school every day to serve our children, and we want to thank them very, very much,” said de Blasio.
“With school safety agents, their engagements don’t just end during school hours,” said Davids. “They participate in a ton of programs, join coat drives, give kids money for lunch if they don’t have any. These Black and Brown women are a critical part of our school community.”

The Knicks reached the halfway point of their regular season schedule on Tuesday night with a 111-96 win over the San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden. They were 20-21 when the 22-18 Dallas Mavericks visited the Garden last night, sitting 11th in the tightly contested Eastern Conference standings. The Mavericks were without former Knick All-Star Kristaps Porzingis, who was in COVID19 health and safety protocols.
Comparatively, the Knicks, one game under .500 before facing the Mavericks, were 18-17 after 35 games a season ago with a similar winning percentage of .514 when the league held an abridged 71-game regular season. The landscape has changed as teams such as the Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers, who ended last season 10th, 11th , 12th and 13th respectively in the East are much improved. The Bulls led the conference at 27-11 prior to hosting the Nets last night, the Cavaliers (2318) were 6th, the Hornets 7th (22-19) and the Raptors 8th (20-18). All of them have the necessities and staying power to be contenders for one of the 10 post-regular season spots with the 7 through 10 seeds designated for the Play-In Tournament.
So, unlike the charmed run the Knicks experienced in the secondhalf of their schedule last season when they went 23-13, their remaining 40 games over the next three months will undoubtedly be an intense and hardfought grind. They have labored to develop productive and sustained consistency that is reflected in their 10-11 home record heading into the matchup with the Mavericks. COVID-19 and injuries have affected them as they have all 30 NBA teams.

Dealing with Kevin Durant (MCL), James Harden (hamstring), Joe Harris (hamstring) and LaMarcus Aldridge (ankle), the part-time play of Kyrie Irving, and nearly 30 different starting lineups, the Brooklyn Nets are struggling. Today is the NBA’s trade deadline and as of the time this story went to press, the Nets had not made any major moves.
The Nets were 29-24, 7th in the Eastern Conference, when they hosted the Boston Celtics at the Barclays Center on Tuesday. It was Brooklyn’s first game at home since ending a five-game road trip against Western Conference opponents. They went 0-5 and had lost eight games in a row before facing the Celtics.
Trade rumors about Harden abound, the loudest being Harden to the Philadelphia 76ers for Ben Simmons. Some have wondered about the logic of the Nets trading Harden, 32, for Simmons, who is 25. While seven years younger, Simmons, who has decided to sit out this season rather than play for the Sixers after his relationship with the team’s head coach, Doc Rivers, soured after they were eliminated from the playoffs last season, has struggled shooting the ball. His confidence was completely lost in the Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series versus the Atlanta Hawks that ended the 76ers’ season.
So why would the Nets trade Harden, one of the league’s best allaround offensive players, for Simmons, a 6-foot-11 point-forward, three-time All-Star, two-time NBA All-Defensive First Team selection, and arguably the most versatile defensive player in the NBA but until proven otherwise a scoring liability? As Columbia University’s women’s basketball team is having an incredible season with its best-ever start in Ivy League Conference play, junior guard/forward Kaitlyn Davis has been a standout. She received back-to-back Player of the Week honors from both the Ivy League and the Met Basketball Writers Association. She has started in all 20 games this season and is averaging 13.5 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.
“I think Kaitlyn is the star in our league, and I think her stats are proving it,” said Columbia head coach Megan Griffith. “The way she affects the game in so many ways is very impressive. There’s nobody else doing that in our league. I’m really proud of her. The things that she said she wanted to accomplish as a Lion two years ago, she’s doing that. And she’s still not a finished product.”

Columbia, like all schools in the Ivy League, sat out the entire 2020-’21 season due to the pandemic. That means after Davis’ outstanding freshman season, she didn’t play another collegiate game for 20 months.
“Over the quarantine, I was able to live with my teammates and we all pushed each other every day as we were working on our skills and working on getting better,” said Davis. “This is just the culmination of that.”
Every day, in addition to virtual classes, Davis and her teammates went to the gym and worked out and then played three-on-three or twoon-two basketball. Returning to campus, the full team and competition felt great. She said she doesn’t really think about what got her to this point, she’s just focused on getting better.
“Pushing myself and my teammates,” said Davis. “If that means that I come out with a double-double that game, that’s kind of just what it is. … I’m trying to look at the small things, details, every day and work hard.”
Davis chose Columbia because she liked the coaching staff and team and was intrigued by the idea of building a program and also laying a foundation for her future. “It wasn’t an immediate gratification thing,” said Davis, who plans to pursue an MBA in the future.
Columbia is currently 16–4 overall and 7–1 in conference play. The team travels to Davis’ home state of Connecticut on Saturday to take on Yale.

Big moves happening in women’s pro hoops

Tina Charles will play with the Phoenix Mercury for the 2022 WNBA season
In one of the busiest free agency seasons in WNBA history, there have been more moves and shuffles. First up, New Yorkers. Queens native Tina Charles will join her Olympic teammates Diana Taurasi, Skylar Diggins-Smith and Brittney Griner on the Phoenix Mercury roster. While one New Yorker comes, another departs. The Mercury traded Long Islander Bria Hartley to the Indiana Fever.
Rumors of Olympic gold medalist and 2021 WNBA Champion Stefanie Dolson signing with the New York Liberty proved accurate. It was announced on Feb. 3 that she would return to her home state—although calling her a local is a bit of a stretch as she grew up more than 80 miles from Brooklyn. The Liberty also announced that it waived guard Jazmine Jones and forward Leaonna Odom, both of whom played two seasons with the team.
Another huge announcement is that the WNBA has accomplished the largest-ever capital raise for a women’s sports property, $75 million. The investors include current WNBA and NBA owners, among them Joe and Clara Tsai, owners of the Brooklyn Nets and New York Liberty, former Liberty player and executive Swin Cash, as well as individuals and companies not previously associated with the league. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert said the league now has the funds to invest in brand elevation and marketing, innovation and thoroughly addressing some of the league’s obstacles to growth.
“We definitely take a huge step forward,” said Engelbert, who said people cannot expect a change overnight. Rather, this is an investment that will unfold over the next three to five years. She said funds could now go into enhanced player marketing, elevation of fan and consumer touchpoints, (WNBA photo) digital innovation and introducing the WNBA into consumer spaces, such as fashion and culture. Obviously, a significant goal is to increase the WNBA’s fanbase. Engelbert said, “Whenever you are thinking about your fanbase, you have to determine and define with data who they are today…and how do we bring them into an arena and how do we make sure they’re watching us on TV?” These are issues that should have been examined 20 years ago. After an initial excitement around the league’s launch, the fanbase waned and there was little reflection on why or how to continuously bring in new fans. While we appreciate and applaud this fantastic new investment and have huge hopes for the future, it would be nice to see honest reflection on missteps and outright bad decisions. It seems reasonable to expect that the past can be addressed while the brilliant future unfolds.
