The new Elisa Contemporary Art exhibit, Female Abstractionists, opens February 19 at the Elisa Contemporary Art Gallery in Riverdale NY. It will run through May 6, 2020. Our new exhibit, Female Abstractionists, celebrates three women whose dynamic artistic paintings are all abstracted. It will feature the work of Vermont artist, Rose Umerlik, and California artists, Kimber Berry and Stephanie Cate. The Abstract art style, while often inspired by real places, memories, and life experiences, is created with abstract-elements of form, color, line, tone, and texture. The viewer will often feel a connection to the work‌sometimes without knowing why. It is often the hidden inspiration or message of the artwork that creates that bond. The paintings of Rose Umerlik are emotional abstractions -- inspired by her stories of family, relationships and filled with forces of emotion including hope, fear, loss, pain, and love. The exhibit will feature two California artists inspired by our natural world. The exhibit will include two series by Stephanie Cate, both inspired by planets in Outer Space. It also includes Kimber Berry’s series of paintings, "Plastic Gardens", where she creates a dialogue of the human condition and raises important social questions as to how we live with nature.

Kimber Berry Kimber Berry is a California artist, who is part of the "Flow Movement," a term coined by Art Critic (and curator) Peter Frank. Her artwork is vibrant and dynamic mixed media combining acrylics, resins and digitally altered photographs of her paintstrokes. As a native of LA, Berry loves to blur the line between what is real and what is illusion. She has received a lot of positive attention from art critics and curators on the West Coast and has been featured in solo and group shows in New York, LA, Atlanta and London. She has been part of recent exhibits at the Riverside Museum and the Huntington Beach Art Center in California. Her work is in public and private collections around the world. Berry has been featured in Hamptons Cottages & Gardens, Ocean Home, Art Ltd, Luxe Interiors +Design, Flaunt, New York Times and CBS News. Stephanie Cate Stephanie Cate is an abstract painter based out of Palm Desert, California. She spent most of her childhood in France, before relocating to Los Angeles, California at fourteen. She spent a couple of years as an apprentice for a muralist in Santa Monica, painting large scale murals for casinos in Las Vegas and private residences before she decided to pursue her own artistic path. She attended Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, receiving a BFA in painting. Being surrounded by the history and architecture of France as a child and the grand decaying beauty of former centuries left an early impression on her that still influences her work to this day. After working for over a decade in a photographic based mixed-media process, Stephanie returned to her original love of pure abstraction to delve in further and reconnect with freshness and liberation of texture, line, shape and color. Cate's work is in public and private collections including Kelly Wearstler, Renee Zellweger, Annabeth Gish, Mr. Avi Amiel (President, Art Collector International Magazine), Rasa Center for Yoga (Oregon) and Wynn Tower Suites (Las Vegas).

Rose Umerlik Rose Umerlik received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Syracuse University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, with strong influences from Stephen Zaima who impressed upon her the importance of one’s ability to self-evaluate, and the “work method.” The backbone of her studio practice is based on a strong work ethic and dedication to being present and honest with her work. Umerlik extracts the intangible emotional moments that live in our collective human psyche and interprets them abstractly through form, line and color so that they may also exist outside of ourselves. She has had thirteen solo exhibitions in New England and has been included in numerous group exhibitions across the country and internationally. Her work has been reviewed in Art New England and Artscope. She has also published two books, Intimacy of Forms and Histories. Among other awards, she has received a grant from the NH State Council on the Arts to participate in the Takt Kunstprojektraum Residency in Berlin, Germany, a fellowship for the Golden Foundation Residency Program, and the Clowes Award from the Vermont Studio Center. In 2018, she was named a VT Artist to Watch!
