SELECTED PROJECTS

1

VACATION HOUSE WITH SEMI-OUTDOOR SPACE Collaboration: Kalipso Mavromati, Maria Mikrou This is one of the first projects I have dealt with. It consists of three parts: 1. Introduction to housing. 2. Bioclimatic analysis (insulation, soundproofing, etc.). 3. Electromechanical analysis (water supply, drainage, heating, insolation, shading, etc.). The concept of transparency applied to the design of this house was the key selection so that the house would be connected with the surrounding natural landscape. As a result, the townspeople that desire to escape from city noise and concrete, will have the chance to do so. Strict geometry and straight lines were used to design the housing. The building is geometrically divided in three spaced pieces. In the center of the construction, between the buildings and the passageways, an internal courtyard is formed (associated with country life). It is worth mentioning that having that many openings in the name of transparency, it could lead to insecurity. Yet, in this way the building becomes more introvert, therefore more secure.

RECASTING ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE RESTORATION OF STABLES OF PAVLOU MELA CAMP Collaboration: Giorgos Kampalampidis, Thomas Tiliopoulos The purpose of this project is to reuse an old camp by restoring the three historical buildings that still exist there and used to be stables. The interventions should highlight both each building’s characteristics and their historical background. Main elements preserved: restoration of the existing masonry, preservation of one type of columns, restoration of the roof, preservation and use of the feeders wherever allowed.

THE GEOMETRY OF THE HEXAGON (Environmental Design) Collaboration: Thomas Tiliopoulos, Nefeli Pappa The plot of this project is meant for 2 three-membered families. The fathers are brothers and both lawyers. Therefore, three buildings are required: two for housing and one for offices. The composition of buildings and configuration of the surrounding space evolves according to the geometry of the hexagonal. From the strict cellular shape (element found in nature) we chose to produce a light and diffuse composition, focusing on the dynamics of the vacuum full.

7

The access to the plot is from the north. The offices are on an upper level than the houses for security and privacy reasons, while the buildings are arranged in such a way as to provide open views all around, being more intense in both the eastern and the western part than the upper level The hexagonal geometry applied to the windows, too, gives the impression of an interesting game in the space. These hexagonal openings create the illusion of open views thus allowing the light to flood in the space creating experiential spaces made of non-materials (light and shadow). At the same time, while the windows open, they permit both bright and sided ventilation (due to different temperature of air masses)

RIBBON PROJECT Collaboration: Nefeli Pappa, Irini Xatzialexandrou CONCEPT AND DESCRIPTION The concept of this project is the fluid and supple ribbon and it’s capability of producing viable spaces. It consists of two parts: 1. Implement of the concept in narrow front plot. 2. Implement of the concept in wide front plot.

1. A RIBBON UNFOLDING AROUND ITSELF SCENARIO It is about a couple of passionate artists that lead an intense social life full of social events and parties, as well as hosting friends.

RIBBON PROJECT 2. TWO RIBBONS ENTANGLING TO EACH OTHER AND UNFOLDING ACCORDING TO THE INCLINATION OF THE LAND SCENARIO This is the main house in a suburban area of a couple at the age of thirty. The husband is a successful painter and the wife a tai-chi teacher. The couple has no children, so the private spaces are limited to workplaces, rest and recreation. More specifically, the house includes a bedroom, living room, kitchen and a large indoor area with an unobstructed view, where the husband can work. Furthermore, a guest house was designed , with separate entrance, to maintain privacy. The large outdoor courtyard offers the wife the chance to practice and concentration. The pool in the courtyard serves both privacy and relaxation, but it can also be used to organize gatherings with friends. Inspiration on the design of the house were two ribbons mixed together creating spaces. One of these ribbons, as it extends, creates a passageway in the north-south axis, while the second, entangling with the first on the same axis, in some places stretched, creates spaces in the east-west axis. In some places of this entanglement the second ribbon is exalted, creating additional vertical openings that offer additional lighting. Large openings and multiple outputs of the building to outdoor spaces contribute to the integration of the house with its surroundings with an unimpeded view. Thus, the surrounding space is not only a decorative element in the house, but it invades from all over transforming the house into an ideal environment for the couple, not only to live their daily life but also to escape from the grey, nondescript city landscape. .

13

DESCRIPTION: The result of the exploitation of the initial idea is to create a building which externally gives the impression of two ribbons mixing together. The whole building is situated on the highest point of the plot and therefore has uninterrupted views. The reflective copper panels in a different color on each ribbon, which used to invest the outside of the metal skeleton of the house, turns it into a huge mirror that reflects the surroundings and changes colors depending on time and weather conditions. Inside the house wood and marble floors are used. Access to land is on the north side, where there is the main entrance of the residence. The first floor is divided into three levels. The first level is the guest house, which has its own entrance from the west, the second is the living room and the kitchen and the third, the working space. On the second floor, all the private areas of the couple are situated, the bedroom, the sanitary facilities and an additional space.

RESTORATION OF STREAM IN NTEPO (Landscape Architecture)

Collaboration: Maria Mikrou, Katerina Lagou CHEMICAL EQUATION

URBAN EQUATION

Chemical elements tend to create links among them with a view to obtaining firmer structure. We consider that in the city there are chemical elements (urban, natural, cultural, etc.), among which bonds are created in order to obtain firmer structure. These bonds, with the help of the design, create the tractive forces among the elements. This way, stability and equilibrium are established as all elements coexist harmonically.

SMART CAMPUS INTERVENTIONS IN AUTH CAMPUS (Urban Design) Collaboration: Esra Imam The purpose of this project is to make the AUTH campus more smart, green and open. The means that are used to accompish these goals are, on the one hand, urban interventions aiming openness and greenness and on the other hand, the creation of a smart web of apps and sensors controlled by an e-platform that collects and distributes all data.
