How to:

Lucid Dream

Method One...

Document Your Dreams

How to Lucid Dream

Remembering your dreams is the first step to controlling them. I find I have more memorable dreams more often the more I write them down. Keeping a dream journal is really fun. Don’t worry about writing down exactly what happened, just get the general vibe down.

Recalling your dreams is a skill that gets easier

the more you practice. Think of key words, objects, feelings, colors, places, people, storybeats, absolutely anything you can associate with a particular dream. I think of this collection of associations as a collage- with the goal of vividly invoking the memory of a particular dream when looked at.

1

Try as many different ways of documentation as you want!

Whatever works best may change as you get better at recalling. Pay extra attention to the things you want to see more of in your dreams.

2

For example; if your favorite dreams include flying, make sure to really emphasize that part in your documentation. If it helps to illustrate parts of your dream, do that too! Put it right there along with any writing you dodon’t worry about how clean or organized it looks. Dreams aren’t clean or organized either!!

Method Two... Be Observant

How to Lucid Dream

Observe your waking life. Keep note of things that make it easily distinguishable from a dream. This will help you easily realize when you are dreaming. I’ve read that taking a moment

4

during the day to assess the things in the room makes realization much faster. If you’ve ever heard of the “five things” method for anxiety management, I see it as similar to that.

5

One common thing you aren’t usually able to do in a dream is jump. It may sound silly, but jumping periodically while you are awake can help remind you to try jumping in your dream.

6

Dream you follows the same cognitions as real you.

If you can make a habit out of checking your reality, you’ll do the same in your dreams.

Method Three...

Focus

How to Lucid Dream

Keep your goal in mind, especially as you are falling asleep. Be aware of your body in space and pay attention to your transition into sleep. Try to fall asleep in a different position than you usually do. I find that I lucid dream much more often when I force myself to sleep a little differently.

Sometimes, your body will want to

8

change position as you are going to sleep. Try staying in the same place until you fall asleep. I’m not sure why but at the very least my dreams are always super vivid when I do this.

9
10
Sleep paralysis is a possible risk with lucid dreaming, especially when you’re falling asleep in a different placement that you are used to. I honestly don’t know how to avoid this but it only happens to me when I fall asleep on my back so avoid that I guess.

If you find yourself paralyzed in your sleep, focus on moving one body part and don’t panic. Pay attention to if there was anything unusual in your sleep that could have caused something like that. Sleep paralysis can be really scary and it’s best if it can be avoided.
