Girmus also doesn't understand why the two boys would ever think of shooting students they knew and sat next to in class. Laurie Girmus, a Westside High School media coordinator, was driving to her youngest son's preschool when she heard the "In my mind I'm thinking how in the world did they go from "'okay, news. that didn't work," Girmus said. "They must have had a backup plan I guess and that was the guns." "It was a very typical day, you know," Girmus said as we sat down in the library to talk about what happened on April 20, 1999. She remembers hearing about it on talk radio and seeing it on the TV that day. As she went to go pick up her son all she could feel was sadness. "I got really emotional," Girmus said. "I do recall getting upset because we had moved from Colorado and I was hoping that the event won't effect anybody that I would have known." Girmus also expresses her feelings and opinions on the matter itself. "(Kids getting guns) is what upset me the most at the time," Girmus said. "Just how did they get their hands on those guns?

On that day all she could think about was getting to hold her son again and never let him go. "I just wanted to scoop him up, hug him and say, "'you're never going to school ever again." Having the fear of someone going into one of her sons' schools' with a gun didn't stop Girmus for bringing her kids to school everyday. April 20, 1999 will forever be in our memories and in history books.

LET' S HEAR I T FOR THE LADI ES There are many talented ladies who had athetic success in the 90's, but here are two women who shined in their own ways.

Mi c hel l e Kwan Michelle Kwan, a five time world figure skating champion and two time Olympic champion, is a role model for young girls who want to go into the sport. Kwan started skating in 1984 and continues to do skate in her free time. She wanted to focus on her graduation after her wins at the Olympics, so she enrolled herself in college. Sometimes, athletes don't take the time sit and down and study to earn an education, but Michelle did. The skater graduated from University of Denver and University of Los Angeles with an diplomacy degree. She eventually became one of the most respected U.S advocates for cultural affairs and education. She even married a White House security expert and now lives in Washington D.C. Kwan wanted to make something of her life after her skating days were over, but she will never forget her favorite moment on the ice. "The most memorable and cherished memory was the ?93 Olympic Festival in San Antonio," Kwan said. "I skated in front of the biggest crowd at the Alamodome. The crowd was amazing, the moment was magical." (Golden Skate.com).

WHAT TO WEAR: TRENDS NOW

Elise Tucker Editor-in-Chief

The choker necklace was a staple in many wardrobes in the 90's. The braided thread and plastic wrapped in an effortless design is now making a comeback. Now we see celebrities and teens stocking up their closets with the necklace. The idea came from the 19th century in the UK and other European countries. Not all of them are plastic though. Some of the materials that chokers can be made out of are metal, velvet, lace and leather. The variety of the close and tight necklaces is what makes them special to the consumer. Not all chokers are exactly the same and the consumer can customize them with charms that reflect your personality. Leather jackets. Let's just say that they have brought out an edge to the person who is wearing them. Biker jackets are not just for the motorcycle gangs that stay in a tight group. They are fashionable pieces made to help keep soldiers stay warm when they were out in the field. The coat soon became a trend for angsty teens and rebels who just wanted to feel different. Then the leather jacket was just a piece of clothing. but now it has turned into something everyone must wear. Some jackets have designs such as small stones, many zippers and pockets and even an imprint of a wolf on the back. Paired with a light top and dark jeans is one way to wear the 90s trend, but don't stop there. There are many ways to wear a jacket you just need to explore the trend.

Lipsticks and glosses have evolved over the years. In the 1800s fruits such as berries were used to create a paste to cover women's and men's lips. Then they were manufactured world wide for women who wanted to look different. Now lipstick is made up of several kinds of beeswax, cocoa butter and other chemicals that give the lips a different color. In the 90s, dark lipsticks were made to fit the grunge scene. Brown and dark deep red became a huge hit for the women and it is still around today. Black and purple lipsticks were made as well, but those colors haven't made much of an impact on today's cultural. Lipstick was paired with outfits such as a flannel and black pants to a bright dress. The dark lipsticks are now a winter and fall trend and have glitter, matte or a glossy finish to help the consumer be confident. With dark shades came the famous "smoky eye" and darker blushes.

THE SLAYER I S BACK I N TOWN

Cul t TV s how i mpac t s t hi s gener at i on Elise Tucker Editor-in-Chief

Buffy the Vampire Slayer has become a must see TV show ever since it came out in 1997. The show is about a high school girl who is just trying to juggle her family life, school, boys and secretly being a vampire slayer in the town of Sunnydale. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her Scooby gang made up of witches, a psychic, her British watcher, a werewolf, some vampires and a couple of humans fight off vampires and demons or just anything bad in the town. The TV show has sparked a note on feminism and how women can fight off their own demons without being helped by "prince charming." Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy, looked at the TV culture and a lot of shows had male lead roles. Females would

still be in the shows, but they would be a side character. Whedon flipped that idea on it's backside and created the girl we know and love today. Buffy has sparked other films such Mad Max: Fury Road and Brave to show audiences that girls can do anything. I would recommend this show to everyone who loves a good action show or who just loves to treasure friendship. Buffy the Vampire Slayer started a revolution on TV and I hope that the media continues to impact us in a good way. Females should have more roles and be equal to men in the world and on TV.

MUSI C REVI EWS: NI RVANA Al l phot os f rom iTunes.

Rating: ***** Who hasn't heard of the grunge rock group who's biggest hit is "Smells Like Teen Spirit?" The band formed in 1987 and quickly became a rock group that everyone loved. The members were Kurt Cobain, the singer and guitarist and bassist Krist Novoselic. The band has had five drummers until Cobain's suicide in 1994. The band broke up shortly after his death, but their music lives on. First, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," is a hardcore rock song full of guitars and crazy drum beats. The beginning is a guitar solo, which doesn't come up in a lot of rock songs. Usually the singer starts first or the drums play, so this song has a very original melody and rhythm. Then "Come As You Are," is the song that show the words. The lyrics really come out and shine in this song and the instruments take a break for this song. Overall, Nirvana was the first grunge band to make an impact on our generation and past generations.

MUSI C REVI EWS: OASI S Brotherly rivalry was in the air once Noel Gallagher came into the alternative rock band Oasis. The band originally was Noel's brother Liam Gallagher, Paul Arthurs, Paul McGuigan, and Tony McCarroll, but the band has experienced a lot of changes to the members. In total the band had 10 members over the course of their beginning in 1991 all the way to 2009. Oasis was most famous for their song "Wonderwall." The laid back chill vibe of the song with the tambourine really placed the band on a whole new level of alternative. My only complaint is that this song is really what people think of when they think of Oasis. They have many other great songs on all of their albums, so I hope the other ones can get attention. Some honorable mentions are "Hello" the opening song on the album Morning Glory, "She's Electric" which reminds me of a country song and "Champagne Supernova" that has water sounds in the beginning which is very different from other bands. Overall the band still makes some sort of an impact on us, but we can only remember "Wonderwall."

MUSI C REVI EWS: SPI CE GI RLS Rating: *** I'm not a big fan of 90s pop music and I just found out why. The Spice Girls were a girl group back in the 90s when it was all the rage for boy and girl groups to start up. The members of this pop princess girl group cliche are "Scary Spice" (Melanie Brown), "Sporty Spice" (Melanie Chisholm), "Baby Spice" (Emma Bunton), "Ginger Spice" (Geri Halliwell) and "Posh Spice" (Victoria Beckham, nĂŠe Adams). First, "Wannabe" is the girl power anthem that will get stuck in your head the minute the girls start singing. It is a catchy song, but I won't want to listen to that everyday. All of the other songs I have heard like "2 Become 1" and "If U Can't Dance" are songs that I think should have been cut from the album. I like the Spanish speaking in "If U Can't Dance," but the beat and the rapping is not appealing to the ear at all. "2 Become 1" is filled with synths which make the song a ballad. Where's the guitar? If more instruments were added than just one track I would like this song more. Overall, the Spice Girls is your typical 90s girl group.

MUSI C REVI EWS: GOO GOO DOLLS Rating: ***** I wish I could give this group a thousand stars in the rating, but that just won't be fair. Goo Goo Dolls started in 1985 with John Rzeznik (guitarist) and George Tutuska (drums), but a year later Robby Takac joined as the bassist and the band formed in Goo Goo Dolls. They were first "the band that sounded like The Replacements," but once "A Boy Named Goo" came out they finally made something of their small band. Tutsuka was fired because of disagreements between Rzeznik and Mike Malinin joined the group in 1995. All of their songs speak a certain message to the listener. "Name" is driven by the acoustic guitar and the message behind the lyrics. "Iris" is the song that EVERYONE knows. The depressing song somehow spoke to fans the most and that's why people know and love the song. But not all of songs showed audience appeal. "Something For the Rest of Us" album seemed to be overlooked a little and I haven't heard their newest album "Magnetic" on the radio at all. True fans would know of "Truth is a Whisper," "What A Scene" and don't forget "Slave Girl." I just wish that everyone would know more songs other than "Iris."
