The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts will herald a new era of 21st century performing arts facilities at the Clayton campus. Alexander Theatre opening in 2018 Sound Gallery and Jazz Club opening in 2019
As we fast approach the completion of the first stage of the Alexander Theatre Redevelopment, with the opening of the theatre itself slated for the first quarter of 2018, our MAPA programming is also increasing in its quality, variety and quantity. For lovers of contemporary performing arts, there is plenty to choose from, whether you are one of the many fans of the dynamic Monash Academy Orchestra, or are simply interested in the best in music, theatre and dance.
Our popular series of piano recitals Wood, Metal and Vibrating Air continues with composer Elena Kats-Chernin in duo with Tamara-Anna Cislowska, as well as local hero Hoang Pham, and our own Kenji Fujimura. MAPA is proud of its connection to our performing arts schools, which result in groundbreaking theatrical works; this season you can catch the third-year students in Death Match by Morgan Rose at the Malthouse’s Tower Theatre.
Particularly exciting for us is the first outcome of the Jeanne Pratt Musical Theatre Artists-inResidence Program, the aim of which is the creation of new works of music theatre, in which the students of the Centre for Theatre and Performance work in conjunction with the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music. This year will see the first result of this unprecedented opportunity: Jack of Two Trades by Lucy O’Brien and Andrew Strano, based on Carlo Goldoni’s classic comedy. As always, I look forward to seeing you at one of our events, and encourage you to keep informed about the exciting developments ahead. Professor Paul Grabowsky AO Executive Director
Monash Academy of Performing Arts
Speaking of the MAO, it will continue its 2017 season with conductors Natalia Raspopova and Benjamin Northey, in concerts that still include the 2017 Ed Byrne commission, a new work by rising star Lisa Illean, and the Australian premiere of the Violin Concerto written by Australian Charles Horsley – in 1849!

MAPA 2017 season 8
After Julia is a concert of eight contemporary works by Australian women composers responding to Julia Gillard’s tenure as Australian Prime Minster. Decibel Artistic Director, Cat Hope, was inspired to pursue the project after circumstances around Gillard’s prime ministership exposed gender discrimination within politics and wider Australian society, causing her to reflect on the new music sector. Whilst the concert premiered in 2014, these issues are now more pertinent than ever. The broad collection of works includes a 6-girl choir, instructions from goldfish, spoken phrases turned into musical gestures, mouth organs and more.
‘ this concert is testament to Decibel’s flexibility as an ensemble - their ability to perform such disparate styles to a high level of proficiency is indicative of their passion and willingness to engage and explore.’ – Limelight

The piano music of the romantic period is singular in the repertoire for the instrument. Few composers have quite such a strong connection to a single instrument as Liszt and Chopin have to the piano. Amongst the most notable piano composers in history, their range of concertos, etudes, sonatas and transcriptions. Their compositions are breathtaking exciting, and often virtuosic.
