US Food Insecurity Map
Thesis | Research & Site
The thesis began with the issue of food insecurity. Food insecurity is defined as a socio-economic condition where households within a census tract--an area about the size of a neighborhood--do not have reliable or consistent access to fresh, whole foods (fruits, vegetables, grains, etc.) within a 1/4 mile of where they live. Some signs of this issue may be that the people within a food insecure neighborhood have to rely on the products sold in convenience and corner stores, or a combination of low-income and sprawled development. Even having a grocery store does not keep people from being food insecure; the wage-earners in the household could have multiple jobs, which keeps them from consistent shopping, and honestly, fresh and healthy food could just be more expensive, which is its own deterrent. There are a myriad of issues that cater to food insecurity, and the two largest ones are proximity and cost.

Thesis | Architectural Design
This thesis is a vision for the new contemporary market fueled by the creation of a local network of food distribution. The project is a design investigation centered around tackling the issues of food insecurity, food distribution and food waste. The proposed food hub features a marketplace, a small urban farm, and spaces for learning and cooking. In terms of landscape, the project is designed to have farms pace that is not only productive, but also experiential. The proposed scheme will generate seasonal produce in the outdoor urban farm, supply direct-from-farm foods for the Deanwood community year-round, and for those struggling with time, food delivery services will be provided. This food hub will ultimately allow local farmers and citizens to connect in a way not consistently encouraged in today’s food system.

This design exercise called for the creation of a place centered on community-driven innovation and the communication of new ideas. The project is District Woodworks--a community wood shop, located near the intersection of U Street and 14th Street in Washington, DC. The place provides its users the training, support, and materials necessary to create, fix or alter furniture and kitchenware. For the overall design, the building contains a series of defined, yet flexible woodworking spaces that incentivize craftsmanship, conversation, and various modes of thinking. Visitors enter through the showroom, which features both the Reading & Tool Library and the Woodworks Exhibition space. The above floors are dedicated to wood shop classes and personal wood working projects.

University of Maryland Infrastructure Innovation Center Concept Study Proposal
The University of Maryland School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation, assembled a team of professionals, scholars and students to develop the IIC building concept study for a new research and innovation hub on the College Park campus for the A. James Clark School of Engineering.
13
The IIC building is envisaged as an incubator for collaborative and innovative research centers and laboratory facilities. The fundamental design concept examines ways in which collaboration, excellence and leadership can be embodied in the architecture of a new facility that brings together research centers, labs and state-of-the-art teaching facilities.
